Cute and romantic place with excellent wine and service. The only criticism is they turn up the music too loud and you land up having to shout at your company.

Absolutely love the wine and food here! Great Date place but also great to catch up with friends!

In the summer you can sit outside which is lovely but I love the indoor cave style.

It might not sound like a rocking Saturday night, but last weekend I had a girls' night out at a public loo in Clapham. The loo in particular is called WC and it's actually a trendy new wine bar. WC in Clapham (which stands for Wine and Charcuterie and not water closet)  is one of many London public toilet turned bar. This one also has outdoor space, enclosed by one of those American style white picket fences. This would've been a fantastic al fresco terrace if it hadn't been for the fact that you're actually sitting on a traffic island, surrounded by busy Clapham traffic and flanked by a bus stop.

The Vibe

It’s taken two years to turn the derelict Victorian toilets under Clapham Common tube station into a wine bar.

The tongue in cheek WC sign now reads as Wine & Charcuterie, a small outdoor seating area on street level with an intimate bar serving a small but satisfying menu, underground.

It was a balmy summer evening on our visit but we descended into the bar to bag ourselves a cosy spot for the night. Leaving the junction of scurrying commuters upstairs you quickly forget you’re in Clapham as you’re welcomed into the dark, candlelit bustle of the bar with all it’s Victorian charm and restored quirks beneath.

WC has a speakeasy feel, without the naff doorman and hidden entrance.

The Order

The menu couldn’t be more suited for a first date. Forget the painful page flicking through a menu, you can glance at the choice of cheese and charcuterie boards, order, and be back to your ‘getting to know each other’ conversation within minutes. There’s a short list of great wines (that change monthly) and the waiting staff are more than happy to chat these through with you. The locally sourced charcuterie is top notch, vegetarians are catered for in the all veggie mezze board.

The Game

We walked in without a reservation and were seated straight away. Staff are super friendly and it’s table service, which means more one-on-one time with your date.

Order a bottle of wine, a couple of bar snacks and a cheese and charcuterie board. This will feel like a dinner date but with the relaxed attitude of a bar date, allowing you to politely call it a night whenever you fancy.

If you need a sweet note to end your meal (no desserts here) or want an excuse to head into the city, hop in a cab to a on-trend dessert bar for a sugar rush.

The Faults

The wine is a little pricey – you’ll be spending a little more than a penny in this WC.

Sex Factor

High. Oh, and they serve oysters at the weekends, wink wink, nudge nudge.

I was out and about again, this time for the launch of WC Wine & Charcuterie. You've guessed it, it's a wine and charcuterie bar inside a refurbished 100 year old public toilet, right next to Clapham Common tube station. I like to think that they went through a few options in the pub first before deciding what to specialise in - "Wedding Cakes? Walkers Crisps? Wychwood Cider? Wensleydale Cheese? I've got it, WINE AND CHARCUTERIE"

WC follows The Attendant and Bermondsey Arts Club down the London bog route, though planning apparently started a few years ago and just took a long time to sort out. It was worth the wait as they have totally transformed the space into a beautiful, cosy wine bar, extending old cubicle walls & doors to create booths, and using old wine crates in a variety of ways. There is also a rather pleasant garden up at street level, enclosed by white picket fences

They apparently unearthed a number of gems when they were refurbishing, including some rather raunchy letters that are on show for all to see in the men's bathroom (which uses original urinals). You can also find some entertaining old school graffiti scratched in to the wooden booths if you explore closely with a light on your phone.

I guess I should talk about Wine & Charcuterie now? Well, the thing is, I'm no wine expert, and we were drinking bubbles when we went, but I have no doubt that they have a very strong wine list. More my scene is the Brixton beer on tap.

As for food, you have several options.

Small plates including - Chadwick’s Black pudding Scotch egg & pickles £4, Iberico Leg w/ gherkins - £8, and a special - Foie gras parfait for 2 with Pedro Ximinez jelly, cornichons bread - £10.

Charcuterie board at £15 - Coppa, Hungarian paprika & chilli, WC Ham hock terrine, Wild Boar Salami, Bresaola, Smoked duck breast (£2 supplement)

Cheese board at £15 - Brie de Meaux (cow, France), Cantal, (cow, France), Drunken Burt, (cow, Cheshire), Golden Cross, (goat, Sussex), Fourme d’Ambert, (cow, France)

Superior Cheese & Charcuterie at £25 - Smoked duck breast, Jesus De Lyon, Truffle Salami, Pork Rillette, Brie De Meaux with wild honey, Fourme d’Ambert, Piccalilli, Mixed Olives, Sourdough & oils

There's also a mezze platter, a ploughman's board, oysters and salads - plenty to keep you happy.

All in all, we were very impressed, though a return visit is required to fully explore the food and drink. WC is not a gimmicky bar in a toilet It's an atmospheric, classy wine bar, perfect for dates, or pre dinner / cinema drinks, and a great addition to Clapham Common.

Came in here last Thursday with my family and I was astounded by how good both the food and service was. The atmosphere was just right, the music on point. Everything seemed under control and our food and drinks came out nice and quick. A good selection of wine is available, and the cocktails (especially the Mexican Butterfly) were very tasty. In terms of food, the baked camembert is a must! They serve it drizzled in honey and with a stick of rosemary on top - showing fractionally just how much care they put in to the venue. Definitely recommend coming here! Special thanks to the tattooed girl for her excellent customer service

Just been here this evening, really nice. Warm welcoming and nice staff, great selection of drinks and food. It was an ideal place to start and it's right next to Clapham Common underground station, so it's an ideal location and easy to access too. It's very cosy, ideal for going on a date, visiting with a loved one, or catching up with a friend. Solid A**** LDT x

Visited afterwork with my sister in law and had a couple of nibbles alongside some lovely drinks. This small and inviting space is intimate and cosy. It really has a lovely vibe and is certainly one you’d need to book in advance due to the limited number of seats available. We had a lovely time and will most certainly be returning.

Intimate atmosphere, best suited for dates atmosphere & food-wise. We had a few servers but our first was Yash, who was lovely and personable. To get here you need to walk down stairs and space (unless you get a booth) might be a bit cramped with a walking support.

We went for some cocktails, wine and a cheese board. Great selection of cheese and the team were great at recommending wine for us to try based on our tastes. Only downside is that it gets a little warm down in the restaurant and it wasn't even that hot outside so can only imagine it gets warmer in the summer months! Despite that everything was great.

One of my favourite places in London. A true hidden gem right next to the tube station. The wines on offer are all great and the food is absolutely amazing. My go to, to take out-of-towners for a brilliant time.

Lovely hidden gem in Clapham. Went with friends but it's definitely more of a date spot. Service started slow and they had run out of several drink options. But, picked up later in the evening. Also, not many alcohol-free options.

This is one of those places you don’t want to review because you don’t want other people knowing what a gem of a place you’ve found. Thanks for looking after us so well - I wish I did have an “in” on those red sambas.

Lovely special authentic place with amazing wines and food. A very cool experience with great history to the building. The staff are always so friendly and professional. It’s often busy at weekends, so worth booking so you’re not disappointed. We’ve always had a great time coming to the WC bar and will continue to support our local 😊

Great place, fantastic vibe and thoughtful menu. I definitely recommend for a laid back date night. The theme also adds to the charm, they’ve definitely put an unused WC to good use!!!!
