One of my favourite restauarants in the Angel/Islington area, if not for its delicious Indian cuisine, then for its intimate, sleek interior and consistently friendly staff.
I'm always skeptical of trying new Indian restaurants (once I find one that I love, I tend to stick to it!) but I've been going to Zaffrani for years now - so much so that I was once made to order something other than my beloved dum ka murgh (a deliciously tender chicken curry in a tomato-based sauce) and peshwari naan by the all-too familiar staff! (Btw, when his recommendation arrived, I admitted that I didn't like it as much and it disappeared before my eyes, only to be replaced 10 minutes later with dum ka murgh ... I've never felt more spoiled, other than the time Banh Mi Bay re-opened for me when I drunkenly knocked on their just-closed doors).
It's definitely a place where you can take friends and family - a terrific atmosphere for sharing a bottle of wine and a selection of delicious curries and starters.
Not to be missed, if you're nearby and a great option for collapsing into after a day of shopping on Upper Street.
Zaffrani is tucked away on Cross Street just off the main Islington high streets, Upper Street and Essex Road. It has a clean, modern interior with sleek black leather chairs and white hanging light fixtures. It's a relatively small restaurant and tables are packed quite closely together, making for an intimate dining experience.
I have come here a few times with my mother and brother and we love to share the vegetarian Bazaar Ki Bajias, a delicious selection of Bajis, onion and lentil fritters, samosas and a selection of dips. Although it is intended for two, servings are quite generous and is definitely adequate for a party of three or four.
I am quite a wimp when it comes to spicy food so usually opt for the Saag Gosht. It is a relatively mild lamb curry with chilli, mustard and spinach. I always find the lamb to be extremely tender and very flavoursome, and have never been disappointed by this dish. My mother often orders the Laal Maas, another lamb dish, but with more of a fiery bite. It's delicious but recommended for the more adventurous diners due to it's hot flavour. Although these are our firm favourites I have always been happy with my choice if I order something different. Zaffrani never fails to deliver on a chilled out and flavourful dining experience.
If you’re looking for a more intimate night out, this North Indian restaurant between Essex Road and Upper Street could be one of the better places to go.
The vegetarian food is one of the better ranges I’ve tasted, and if you’re a cheese lover then you should definitely try their ‘Paneer Makani’ dish. My meal usually comes to around £20 including drinks, but it’s worth the price if you ask me.
One of the few flaws I had with the restaurant though was that the staff were often trying to rush us to order and finish our food, so it was sometimes hard to relax.
Went for dinner with my wife. Loved it. Great service, delicious food, lovely atmosphere. There’s outdoor seating and staff is really friendly. Will go back soon
A hidden gem just off of the main Upper Street in London. We stayed at an Airbnb just 2 doors down from this place, and at 4:00PM when the kitchen really starts to get busy, awesome smells wafted onto our terrace and into our cottage. Although the decor is minimalistic, the service and food is awesome. A must try!
The best Indian food we ever tried!!! All owners and staff were so warm and welcoming. We were so happy that this was our first stop. Thank you Mr. T and Mr. Jack!
So glad I finally ate here!

Great price for the quality and quantity. £60 for two people.
Popped into Zaffrani with a friend with no booking and it was a great experience. The staff are lovely and helpful in their recommendations. Service is efficient and the food is delicious; pleasant experience overall, thanks guys x
The place is quite nice for proper Indian place. Nun is nice, others I have are OK, chicken tandoori can be more soft and more spice. Spicy rice is OK.
Feeling regretful that we didn’t try Zaffrani earlier!
It is the best Indian food in Angel or even Islington. The food are very delicious and the service is impeccable. Friendly and proud of their dishes. Uncle Jack is very nice!
Wonderful experience will definitely come again soon!
One of the hidden gems near Angel Station and I regret not coming here earlier despite living nearby. Excellent food, friendly staffs and overall astounding experience. Recommend anyone who’s nearby and also worth a visit if you’re not!
A lovely restaurant, comfortably laid out inside and positioned well, slightly away from the busy main road, in a quiet side street. The atmosphere was relaxed and the main chef made a real effort to come out of the kitchen and talk with guests. Both courses I had were very good indeed and different to what is usually on offer in every other Indian restaurant. I can particularly recommend the plate of mixed bhajis. Of course, the familiar favourites were also available on the menu. Prices were very reasonable - I would definitely come back again.
I went here with my friends and we all loved it. We had a spectacular evening. The service was 10/10 and the food was amazing. We got given recommendations of dishes from a waiter who’s name I forgot and we all loved our food uncle Jack was also great he made sure we were well looked after. The atmosphere is so relaxing and had good vibes. I’ll definitely be back.
Extremely good service with excellent food! The dishes where very clean with very little grease. Loved it....
Absolute best Indian food of my life! Don’t hesitate—come here! We’re visiting from the US, and there is nothing like this across the pond. I cannot recommend highly enough! The food and staff are unmatched!
This place is awesome! Jack the owner is so lovely and the food is amazing. Can’t wait to come back. Best kept secret in angel.
Amazing food, and genuinely engaged staff. Staff were great with my children (10 and 12) and made sure they has a good a meal as my wife and I. Lovely quiet environment just off the beaten track in an otherwise very busy but exciting area. We will be back!
Amazing experience, really good food try the Mango Lassi to drink
Impressive food and invaluable insights from Masterchef Jack made the dining experience unforgettable at Highly recommended!
Amazing. Whole package food and service. Very nice people, very accommodating and helpful. Delicious and positively non standard food!
Absolutely delicious food. The menu is a break from the norm, with a range of new and interesting dishes as well as some classics too. So tasty, and a good range of vegetarian as well as meat dishes. The waiters were very polite, efficient and friendly and the restaurant itself had a great atmosphere. This was our first visit but we are looking forward to returning soon!
Really kind, helpful staff who went above and beyond to provide vegan dishes. Best Indian restaurant in Islington.
Amazing Indian food! Great service by Jack :) definitely worth it!
