I very much liked the atmosphere there, the staff was super friendly and charming. What I also enjoyed was having there my favourite drink, a vodka-cranberry. So when I come back to Wimbledon and I will! I totally come back to The Crooked Billet!

If you like proper pubs, this one serves excellent beer, ales food and the service is always warm and welcoming. The landlord is always up for a chat as well. The locals are nice (I'm one) and sometimes the tourists Stumble upon this place but most can't be bothered with the walk across the common.

Really nice pub, friendly staff, good beer and the man behind the bar is from Hull. So a good Northern welcome :)

Very nice place. Excellent and varied menu. Good quality food and friendly staff. Very pleasant atmosphere. Beware of the hand dryer in the gents. It's strong enough to strip the skin from your hands.

Great food and for a change, some variety for the vegetarians as well. Ambience is alright but they have a big lawn out front with easy chairs and that makes for a perfect post-lunch siesta spot. Head here on a sunny day

This was the best pub in London, by some distance: the easy, friendly, atmosphere of a proper 'country' pub; a great selection of beer and wine; tasty, well-prepared food; chatty and efficient staff; all this, coupled with the fantastic location of Wimbledon Common, made for a winning combination. The pub closed for refurbishment in Summer 2014 and I only hope that the atmosphere which made the Crooked Billet so welcoming won't have been destroyed. It would be a great tragedy if another proper pub were turned into the sort of identikit, bland, and soulless bar that seems to infest most of the rest of London - we will see in September 2014, when the pub reopens.

November 2014: Unfortunately, the refit hasn't really improved the pub. They've managed to add a tiny bit of extra space by building into a small internal garden that existed previously, but they've also redecorated and removed much of the character that made the Billet such a friendly place to be. By opening the place up, they've removed the cosy little corners that were so welcoming. And what is it with pubs and the 'distressed' decor look at the moment? This is old England, not New England and I'm pretty sure that Young's is so far behind the curve in trying this look - something that seems to have been inflicted upon a lot of pubs over the past few years - that it'll soon be pretty old hat and not only will the Crooked Billet be less welcoming, it'll also not be as 'trendy' as they seem to have tried to make it. They've also taken down some of the old pictures - pictures of nearby locations such as Wimbledon Common in the snow - and put up a selection of artwork that has little to do with the local area and seemingly the only reason for it being there is that some interior designer thought it a good idea. The new food menu is also inferior to the old; again, while it hasn't exactly been ruined, it certainly hasn't been improved - the substitution of goats cheese for the breaded camembert - one of my menu favourites - for instance. All in all, while the Crooked Billet is still a decent pub, I'm left wondering why they felt it necessary to spend a good deal of money and forgo a couple of months' takings to achieve so very little in terms of extended space, albeit with slightly shinier loos - all that's really been achieved is the diminution of the wonderful atmosphere that once existed.

Rating reduced from a '5' to a '4'.

Location i a 5, but the food can sometimes be better. Stay a way from the hummus, think it was homemade, lacked flavour was disappointing, but great atmosphere and we visit regularly.

I would not say it’s a gastro pub. We only had snacks whilst kids had their dinner. 4.75 £ for chips and 6£ for few veg sticks with a basic houmous. I wouldn’t recommend the food there unless you just need to get fed.

Visited for the RWC final. Had a really good chicken Caesar salad which I can recommend. Other half had the fish cakes which were a teeny bit overdone (maybe personal taste), but all in all, lovely. Staff were super friendly and attentive albeit super busy. Great little nook on the corner of the common.

Lovely atmosphere in a nice old pub. Great food and drink, the staff are great, and very dog friendly. If you're lucky you can meet the pub cat! The fish finger sandwich is 🤌

Family group for Sunday lunch & was just perfect 👌 Roast beef so tender & plenty of veg, parsnip & potatoes. Service was attentive but not intrusive & just LOVE the pub cat relaxing on sofa!! 😻 Well done guys 👏

I have been happily coming here for over 30 years and frankly today you underperformed. Both roast beef and lamb were underwhelming and lacking flavour. Meringue was very hard, lacking texture and far too sweet. We ate outside and I get shabby chic but the table was rotting and chair needed repair. Toilet (a hired loo) had no light. Service remains excellent. I truly hope you are not in a terminal decline. Perhaps you are stretching your brand and management too far?

A lovely pub. Relaxing atmosphere and great food. Not an extensive menu but then again, Gordon Ramsey always says, keep it simple and good. This is what they seem to have done. The red Shiraz was absolutely fabulous. Will certainly be going back there again.

Lovely pub for Sunday lunch. Tends to get lost in the shadow of it's sister pub, the Hand in Hand - but the CB is better. Delicious food!

Good comfy pub with a log fire. Plenty of dining space and room for drinkers around the bar. Good place for a pint after a refreshing walk on the common.
