Went to this vegetarian restaurant on a friends recommendation. Very good ambience with positive vibes!

Had a starter of beetroot, ricotta and dill and the mains of the green dragon salad, which was both healthy and tasty. Also tried teh Thai green curry which was well presented, but didn't enjoy the taste much. Had a pear dessert, which was beautifully presented, but nothing extraordinary in taste.

Overall, a delight for the eyes.

Had the gyoza and the couscous fritters, very well cooked, quantity could have been a bit more. Cosy and beautiful, great for a relaxed night in a nice environment.

This was part a great UK experience specially in my quest for vegetarian restaurant. We order salad and two main dishes and desserts. I loved the food taste and presentation. Staff could be more attentive though but maybe because they have lots of guests, the staff takes little time. A must try place.

It's always lovely to find a vegetarian restaurant that doesn't have fake meats on this menu. Food was ok... A little disappointing. Food looked fantastic but was a little bland. The beetroot tart was mainly onion and didn't taste very beetroot-y. The dragon salad was very heavy on the carrot and light on the tofu, and the triangles were a little bland. The staff were lovely though, and the drinks were great

I had been to this restaurant nearly 5 months ago and really enjoyed their menu. I had mushroom risotto which was too delicious and very different from the risotto at most eateries. After many months I went to this place and the menu had changed for the spring season, although I missed having their classic risotto I tried the Tortilla and creme brûlée. It was really worth trying, stuffed with beetroot and sweet potatoes and mash of avocado beneath the wraps. I recommend everyone to try this restaurant. Vegetarian folks and foodies with enjoy it.

I'm not one who usually opts for the veggie item on a menu so was a tad sceptical of a restaurant that only serves vegetarian food. But I was very pleasantly surprised here. The food was delicious and so well presented. The absence of meat did not really come to mind. Had the trio of starters, the standout of which was the halloumi. The potato cakes were great and the beetroot tart was huge and delicious with a crisp base, sweet caramelised onions and beetroot. Service was on the slow side, but friendly. Recommend a visit if you want to try something different.

we started with a couple of fresh pineapple and grapefruit juices while we pored over the extensive menu, and a couple of bottles of 'fancy water' (sparkling) to keep us hydrated (and fancy). eventually i decided on the mustard seed potato cakes, while bex went for the three onion tart. jeal, because the tart sounded freaken delicious, but whatever. it would probably have killed me, ha.

when the dishes came out, the first thing we noted was how incredibly colourful and well presented they both were, especially considering that neither of them cost more than £6. the potato cake was filled with baby corn, courgette, carrot and green peas and then pan fried to crispy perfection. the tamarind sauce and mint and corriander chutney were dashed around the plate rather than slopped into side dishes, which definitely added the the overall look of the dish. the taste was nothing short of delicious. potato is like my number one, and sweet corn a close second. mash those babies together and fry them up and we're on to a winner, kids.

rebekah's tart was tarty, by all accounts. it was essentially leeks and shallots baked with creme fraiche inside a cheese pastry (yum), topped with caramelised red onions (stop) and finished with a herb oil glaze. she didn't offer me any because "she's such a good friend" and was looking out for my well being, but i could smell the red onions from across the table, and they smelled like heaven.

between courses we supped on fizzy elderflower cocktails and mused about how the mains could possibly be any more delicious than the starters, and then, there they were. this time around i'd opted for the one dish i'd never heard of before - the butternut rotolo (£13), while bex was advised to go for the aubergine schintzel (£14) when deciding between it and the tortillas by the waiter, whose justification was "you can get tortillas anywhere, but you can only get our schnitzel here". good sell, guy. both dishes, again, were impeccably presented. mine was overflowing with crispy carrot (or.. butternut maybe) gratings, while bex's came out in a sea of cream sauce.

the rotolo - roasted butternut, goats cheese, and basil in a baked thyme-infused rolled potato and served with a tomato and caper salsa, and lemon butter sauce was ~sensational. as if the combination of flavours and textures wasn't enough, the best part was digging in to the strange potato dish, trying to work out exactly how and what it was. and with potato for both starter and mains, there was no way i was walking out of that restaurant anything other than full. so more fool me for ordering a side of polenta chips for the table ~just in case~ because, no. those poor, discarded chips.

you want to know about rebekah's schnitzel? well, i didn't ask. but if it helps you to work it out for yourself at all, her applewood smoked cheddar, pesto and plum tomato-layered main that came swimming in a creamy pool of dauphinoise, fried kale and a horseradish cream sauce was devoured in half the time it took me to examine the contents of my rotolo and try to decipher each of the ingredients. i think it's safe to say that means it was yum.

as the waiter took those poor, cold chips away from us with what was left of my dish, and rebekah's completely devoured with not-a-single-drop-of-cream-left-on-the-plate plate, he asked "so i guess there won't be any desserts?" and we cackled high and mighty in his face until he brought them to us. interested to find out what and how exactly a vegan cheesecake (£6) can be a vegan cheesecake, i ordered that, while bex went for the plum jam creme brulee (£5) because: creme brulee.

when the cheesecake came out, it ~looked like a cheesecake, but that's about where the similarities ended. the texture was all wrong, and the taste was... curious at best, and i was slightly disappointed i had ordered it. up until that point, my vegetarian adventure was nothing but a taste sensation, but this dessert left me with nothing but a nutty, dusty flavour in my mouth. rebekah had a try and agreed with my "nutty and dry" comments, and we spent ages trying to figure out what would be in a vegan cheesecake. certainly not cheese, this we knew. from the walnut decoration we concluded that it was mostly nut based, and she was sure she could taste coconut. i couldn't taste a lot - thanks to sickness of the face, and all i was getting was nuts. we asked the waiter when he came by, who confirmed our nutty suspicions, citing cashews as the culprit for the texture and taste, as well as prunes and coconut oil to flavour it. he asked if i liked it. my reply? "it's not a cheesecake". truth.

the creme brulee on the other hand, was delicious. it was perfectly creamy and vanilla scented, and the plum jam - although it looked suspiciously like ketchup, was sweet and fruity. hers was a winner, there's no doubting that. all in all though, both meals were incredibly filling, full of flavour (even the dustiest of ones), and texturally interesting. the presentation of ~everything was not what i would expect from such an affordable restaurant, and the restaurant itself? although heaving with diners as clearly a much sought-after place for both vegetarians, vegans and those-who-do-not-identify-with-a-particular-diet alike, and potentially a tad understaffed for a thursday night, once a waiter was found, you certainly had their full attention.

with each three-course meal coming in at around £25, i'd say that's pretty excellent value, considering we rolled out of that place two and a half hours after we sat down, full to the brim with nothing but ~vegetables...wouldn't you? if you're ever stuck for affordable vegetarian food in either islington or hammersmith, i can totally vouch for the gate.

I had a perfectly pleasant lunch here. My sweet potato and pomegranate salad was nice, but I would have preferred a little more kick to the dressing (I'm aware you can't please everyone but I always like to review honestly). My friend Jane had the rotolo, which was beautifully presented and she enjoyed the flavours. To drink I had a Sauvignon blanc which was below par, tasted more like a Riesling. Coffee after the meal was excellent, gorgeous rich roast.

Bread basket.  A fairly standard offering.  The bread was decent but not outstanding.  Although the olive infused bread was quite tasty. Courgette flower filled with sweet potato, goats cheese, pine nuts and basil, coated in crisp batter, served with puy lentil salad and a garlic & lemon aioli.  We managed to trick someone else by photo that these were deep fried chicken pieces.  Actually, they tasted a lot better than that.  Flashed fried carefully, they contained minimal oil to coat the lovely flowers which went deliciously with the healthy nuts and goats cheese.

I’m on a mission to find the best vegetarian food in London.

The Gate offers an international menu of vegetarian dishes where everyone should find something they like (yes, yes, even the carnivorous!).

Bit of a hit-or-miss in terms of dishes, but if you're not sure what to get, just go for the Aubergine Schnitzel, you won't regret it!

The restaurant itself was much bigger than I’d expected but from the time we got there (7.45pm) to the time we left (around 10pm), it was almost full. The decor is modern and minimalistic with lots of black and white furnishings and industrial lampshades and there is a small cocktail bar that I must be sure to sample next time. My only slight criticisms would be that the tables are a little too close together and it was quite noisy in a busy cafeteria kind of way. Fine for dinner with friends but I wouldn’t want to go there on a date. But when they serve such amazing food, it’s a small price to pay.

The Gate restaurant was highly recommended to me as the “best” vegetarian restaurant in London before I moved to London.  So, I had to check it out!  I loved the airy, casual “feel” of The Gate in Islington and the range of vegetarian options there.  Some dishes can be made vegan upon request, some are naturally gluten-free and can be made / served gluten-free as well.  The wine list offers a number of wines by the glass, carafe and bottle that are labeled vegan, organic, bio-dynamic etc.  Chefs / Owners Adrian and Michael Daniel have created a number of dishes that draw upon their Indo-Iraqi and Jewish background and with French and Italian influences as well. The courgette flower was the best dish that we ate that night!  The stuffing of feta and mint with pine nuts and the lemon aioli brought a ce

The Gate is a vegetarian restaurant (with a lot of vegan dishes) and a menu that changes seasonally. Being July, our visit is for the summer menu. My sister Amy and I went on a Monday night and shortly after we arrived every table was occupied. Looks like we had come to the right place!

The menu is a little eclectic with predominantly Mediterranean but also French and Asian influences coming through. It made me a little unsure of what to order, but that could have just been my indecision.... My starter of  potato chat  (£6) was a level above the other two dishes I had on the night and was an early contender for one of the best things I'm likely to eat in 2015. The dish looked a picture (top left) and was a perfectly balanced blend of crispy spinach leaves and soft potatoes that were subtly spiced and have a lovely little sour tang from a tamarind dressing.

Sometimes, we take it for granted when we live close to our friends! The regular meet ups, popping over to each other’s houses and going for that cup of tea. But when they move away to a different area, then it makes us realise how much we miss those casual get togethers. After a couple of months of not seeing my close friend, we thought that it’s best to put a date in the diary and go out for lunch. The vegetarian restaurant, The Gate, was chosen! The Gate is on the same location that used to be Med Kitchen, before it closed down. The dining area felt spacious and there seemed to be a lounge area on the upper level with comfy sofas. Just like with Med Kitchen, the open kitchen area makes up part of the restaurant. The Gate does exquisite vegetarian and vegan food and also has a lot of gluten free options. All the dishes are so different. We were spoilt for choice with the menu. The Plantain Fritters first took our fancy but then after speaking to the staff, we changed our mind. The on

If you are looking for vegetarian food which is not Indian but equally awesome (but lot different in taste) you must visit this place. It is so so good that you will get 'best food you ever had' thought for sure with every bite. Staff is very friendly. They replaced a dish for us because it had eggs and we ordered it by overlooking it.
In last, a must try place if you are in London.

Located in the lovely Angel, this vegetarian restaurant is truly heavenly!

I have eaten in far too many bland and uninspired vegetarian restaurants. The Gate, however, opens its doors and invites you into a whole a new world of vegetarian cuisine!

The atmosphere is vibrant and warm, soft light, the delicate hum of intimate conversation, and the mellow aroma of a million delicious flavours swirling around you.

We started with the courgette appetizer, which may have been my favourite part of the meal! The crispy coating, warm sweet potato filling, and wonderfully flavourful dip on the sides was superb. There was one little blip on their part, though. My friend had specifically asked for gluten free, and they brought out the wrong one! Fortunately, they caught the mistake early on and brought out a brand new gluten free one for her, so in the end we each got one for ourselves.

for my second course, I had the Butternut Rottolo. I am a sucker for anything with goat cheese, and this was superb! The flavours mingled together beautifully, despite the kale on top (I hate kale . . . if it's your thing, you'll love this dish even more!) If you are opting for vegetarian because you want something light and dainty, I wouldn't say this is for you. I could barely finish the meal, despite how much my tastebuds wanted to!

Service could have been a bit better. It was great that they corrected their mistake with a new appetizer, but my friend could seriously have been affected by the non-gluten free version as she has quite a severe wheat allergy. The service was also quite slow and a tad unatttentive.

Nevertheless, a great meal! I will be back for another delicious meal!

Took a vegetarian friend who was visiting from overseas after reading about this place a few times before. The variety of choices was great, I felt like I could have ordered nearly everything on the menu and I would have been satisfied. What we did end up ordering did not disappoint, the service was excellent and I really enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant. I will make sure I go back with a cousin of mine who is a vegan just to try more on the menu!

A few years ago, when I was a vegetarian, I visited The Gate’s original Hammersmith based restaurant for a birthday dinner. I had a lovely meal and remember thinking the food was exciting and reminded me of Greens, my favourite vegetarian restaurant in Manchester.

So when I was invited to review The Gate’s new Islington restaurant, I couldn’t wait to try it out.

We visited on a Tuesday evening and the restaurant was full. We were seated at a table for two in the window and given the small - just 5 starters and 5 mains - but interesting menu to peruse.

We ordered a Ginger Spritzer (£2.50) and a Carrot, Ginger, Beetroot & Celery Juice (£3.50) and some Olives (£3) to start and the Spritzer was particularly delicious, tasting like a fiery ginger beer but much healthier with soda water.

To start, I decided on the Halloumi Kibi (£6.25) which was char-grilled Halloumi in a tikka marinade, served on a skewer with red onions, peppers and courgettes with chickpea salsa and a pepper coulis. It came presented wonderfully with plenty of salsa and coulis to dip the spiced meaty Halloumi into.

My friend ordered the Carciofini to begin (£8.50) which was a baby artichoke filled with goats cheese, butternut and basil served with a puy lentil salsa and garlic aioli. The goats cheese was perfectly creamy and worked really well with the earthy lentil salsa.

After much deliberation after seeing lots of fabulous plates of food come out of the kitchen, for main course I chose the Asparagus Rotolo (£14.50) and my friend opted for the Cous-Cous Crusted Aubergine (£13.75). The Asparagus Rotolo was one of the nicest vegetarian main courses I’ve ever had - char-grilled asparagus, courgettes and red peppers with herb ricotta and goat’s cheese rolled in a thyme-infused potato served with salad and sauce vierge. Firstly, the asparagus was the thickest and tastiest asparagus I’d eaten in a long time and secondly, the flavours just worked so well together and the whole meal just melted in my mouth.

The Cous-cous Crusted Aubergine - char-grilled aubergine filled with cream cheese, shallot, almond, pickled lemon, chilli and coriander coated with chermoula Cous-Cous and served with a chickpea & Beetroot salsa and red & green schoog - was presented well and came full of flavour with a good texture between the soft aubergine and crisp Cous-Cous coating.

We were both too full for dessert so finished the meal with an espresso (£1.50) and Cappucino (£2), which was a satisfying end to a delicious meal.

I loved The Gate and the meal was perhaps even nicer than my first visit to the original Hammersmith restaurant a few years ago. The food is inventive, delicious and presented beautifully and while some might think it is perhaps pricey for a meal without meat, it really isn’t when you get as good sized and tasty portions as The Gate serves. I will definitely be back.

Here is another great posh vego place along the same lines as Vanilla Black and Mildred's..
The menu is an absolute delight with a really wide range of ingredients used (you're not just eating goats cheese and mushroom) and the amazing accompaniments to each fish - think innovative salads, pickles, sauces and coulis that blend into a fab dish.
I had one of the best halloumi skewers I've tasted as the saltiness of the cheese was perfectly complimented with a chickpea, salad and coulis side.
The Cous Cous Aubergine (top dish) and the asparagus in potato were great too.
As always, I was too stuffed to try dessert but had a spoon of the chocolate marquise with oranges from a friend and it was delish!
The only thing that I would give a miss is the Thai food on the menu given that you can get authentic Thai only a block down the road!
This place is a keeper and will certainly figure in my regular restaurants portfolio!

The food is amazing, I went to the gate Restaurant for the first time in 1999 and had the Aubergine Schnitzel , but they have improved it since. It reminded me of my mums cooking, but a vegan version of it! The lemon sauce was so tasty and rich. My wife had the katsu curry (incredibly subtle taste) and I had the beetroot and mascarpone mousse, with a slightly bitter/sweet taste). The quantity of food was just right and the price reasonable given the top notch quality. The wine was not of a great quality though given the £26 price tag.

A decent meal of goods flavours but with slow service, despite the empty dining room, it was a little disappointing. Not necessarily going to set the world alight, but a reliable option, especially after a night at Sadlers Wells.

I loved it. What a wonderful place. Everything in the place - menus - is vegan. Mostly gluten free, but anything that is, is well published on the e menu and staff can advise. Since nuts are used for some dishes, it's not nut free but again well marked and the staff knows. Anything that looks like meat or fish isn't - it's 100% vegan. But it looks real and tastes like the real deal. Best of all, or maybe next best from the quality and content is the price. Most reasonable for what you get anywhere these days, and the portions are huge. The staff was wonderful and friendly, and the building is an oldie but lovingly and tastefully restored. This place would be special anyway, but it's vegan menu make it unique. Highly recommended.

We had lunch here for 8 people. Lovely presented food and very tasty. Nice staff and great Veggie food.. didn't have enough time to try the desserts but they looked delicious! There were only two staff that did waitering and greeting and one bar staff who did drinks. The restaurant was full of customer's at lunch time and so there was some delays with ordering drinks and food. They need more staff during peek times.

The service was very friendly and professional and the food was really tasty, too. There are only two things that, in my opinion, could be improved: it was very noisy (not sure about a solution here), and there used to be filtered water with cucumber, instead of tap. Maybe some light background music would have been nice.

It's so refreshing to visit a plant-based restaurant that isn't heavily dependant on meat-replicas or soya/tofu dishes, with choices that actually show how much delicious fun you can have with vegetables! Was the perfect place to go for my birthday and they even decorated my dessert cake with a Happy Birthday message and candle. I'm already planning when to go again next.
