A fish and chip shop that’s been around since 1871 must being doing a lot of things right for a very long time. Rock and Sole Plaice is that shop. It’s a favourite haunt of ours each time we visit London and a must-visit eatery. They thought of their crispy battered fish and hand cut chips gets us going every time. It’s been listed by a number of people as the best in London - and it may well be just that!

I had fish and chips before and wasn't a fan, but the sausage option is surprisingly good! The portions are well served and, to make the experience even better on a sunny day, there are places to seat outside, and the waiters will make sure everything is okay with you throughout the meal.

We were told that this was the oldest fish and chips in Great Britain. Ordered a large size of cod loin and calamari for sharing; good portion, crunchy, vinegar condiment was available, friendly staff. Could be very busy, reservation might be needed especially if you come in a group. Overall, a good experience in tasting a typical British meal.

Like many others families in the UK, I was brought up on a traditional Friday night diet of fish and chips, brought home from the local chippy by my dad after he finished work for the week. The rustle of paper and smell of vinegar seemed to herald the start of the weekend. Sadly this tradition has become lost over the years as my tastes have become more discerning and the average chippy more disappointing. So it was with some trepidation that I accepted an invitation to celebrate National Fish and Chips Day at the renowned Rock & Sole Plaice.

Rock & Sole Plaice is another fabulous restaurant I came across in my last London visit.
This place is ideal, if you are looking for proper fish & chips. Very classic British food item. I had ordered for haddock & cod with chips. Portions were huge and those chunky chips were delicious. Also ordered a side dish of mushy peas. Fish was fresh and batter was nice & crispy.
They have outside seating too, so one can relish fried fish with pint of beer, if weather is good.

Overall had good experience. Thank you team Rock & Sole for such fabulous food.

One of the first places where I had Fish and chips during My travels to London...I still love it, even if now is much more expensive ( for a fish and chips place). I had lovely prawns, juicy and crunchy, good chips, fresh tartar sauce, ...Recommended if you are in Covent Garden!

An apt recommendation!!
------------------------------------------------
Coming to the London for the first time, I had certain things on my To-Do list - walking on the Tower Bridge, watching change of guards, walking along Thames and of course having an authentic Fish'n'Chips. And when I asked for recommendations from my colleagues, Rock & Sole Plaice was the first recommendation which I got, and that too from a colleague whom I knew had a fine taste.
And as expected the recommendation was bang on. I loved the fish and chips served. The Haddock was soft and the crust was golden and perfectly done. While I tried Fish'n'Chips at a number of places gradually - only Golden Hind @ Marylebone proved to be a match.
My recommendation: Draw a small box against the name of this restaurant in your list of To-Dos for the next time you are in London.

Sunny Saturday meant a trip to London and amidst all modern restaurants we picked the old F & C joint - one of the oldest in London for lunch. I was here back in '12 and was craving for the same flaky fish and I was not dissappointed.
We ordered batterd haddock. The fish was fresh, flaky and succulent - the crust hard and cracky and nicely supported by tartar sauce with touch of dill.
All and all a pleasant experience.

A pleasant little place.  I first visited this more than 10 years ago and things haven't really changed.  The chips are still delightfully chunky, the fish moist and happy inside and the sharing tables good for a conversation or two with a stranger.  A pricey for fish and chips but what can you expect a stone's throw away from Covent Garden.

I was looking for authenticity and I found it. I had the regular cod and chips with a side of mushy peas and you should've seen my plate after; devoured it. The menu's simple, with no frills. Order a regular, it'll be enough I promise. Also, sit outside if the weather's good. Highly recommend this if you want to go to a pretty place, sit down and enjoy some good fish and chips!

Didn't know what to aspect when we visited The Rock & Sole Plaice in London, but we soon found out why they call it the best fish and chips shop in town. Freaky fresh cod, beautiful white meat inside. And even freshly cut chips. We recommend this plaice place to everyone, even if you're normally not so keen at fish. As I am...

Nice little chippie. The greatest asset is the nice feel of the area and the outdoor dining on a warm day. Supposedly this was London's third fish and chip shop. I would recommend on the basis of the experience for someone visiting and wants to try fish and chips. Otherwise Masters Superfish is better IMO.

During my stay in London, the must have on my list was Fish & Chips. Not Mrs. Paul's or the Gorton Fisherman fish sticks of my childhood. Proper Fish & Chips. Obviously there are many options around town, but we wanted something good and of course cheap. With a little help from my concierge, I found the perfect spot. The Rock & Sole Plaice. The Rock & Sole Plaice is located on Endell Street in Covent Gardens. Just a quick walk from my hotel and right off the main shopping drag - High Street. Gleaming with anticipation, this short walk seemed like an eternity. Are we there yet? Are we there yet? I see a corner store front with huge windows and a small line out front. This must be the place. I peak in and see happy diners feasting, but no available seats. Darn, it's tiny. I'll never get a seat. Before I know it, a waiter sees me and waives me in. "We have more tables downstairs." Aaaahhhhh!!!! Downstairs is full of tourists with an empty table waiting for me. JACKPOT. Now I warn you, thi

We & our love for fish n chips has got us from Mumbai to London's most popular & oldest fish n chips makers! Unarguably the most amazing fish n chips we've ever tried.

Prepared by their 140 year old traditional recipe, this was a complete delight on our palate. We ordered a large British cod which was fresh & perfectly crisp served along with traditional thick fries & tartar sauce dip. You wouldn't find this flavor anywhere in Mumbai. The Rock & Sole Plaice got a heavenly end to our fish n chips craving! MUST TRY!

Ambience: They offer a 2 floor cozy inside seating but we chose the Al fresco picnic benches outdoor seating on the street which was just perfect on a chilly winter afternoon.

Price: £18 for large & £15 for regular fish n chips.

I never thought I will ever say that I like fish and chips until I tried this place. Such an authentic place with many selections of fish.
The fish is super fresh and it's not difficult to spot that as the taste here is just divine. For everything to be perfect you just need the fish to be accompanied by some chunky chips which again were really nice and came in a good portion.
The prices go up to £18 I think, so definitely much more expensive than the local fish and chips but I think it's worth it considering that was the only time when I enjoyed fish and chips in my life.

Rock & Sole is a classic fish n chips place in the heart of covent garden. It's got the biggest variety of battered fish I've ever seen and all the ones I've tried have been very decent.

Having said that, the food's not incredible especially considering the price (about 15 pounds without drinks). The mushy peas are the standard ones you would get in any low-end pub and the chips have nothing to write home about. Also, there's no sign of where the fish comes from (being a student in Sustainability, I'd quite like to know if I'm depleting fish resources or not).

Inside you eat on metal chairs and stools. Downstairs is decorated to look like the inside of a boat which is pretty cool. Outside a few wooden tables and benches await you but only for those rare summer days in London.

Overall, worth going once if you've never had fish n chips and are doing some shopping in the area.

I love this place for Fish and Chips. I prefer it to the renowned Seashell, not because the food is vastly better, but the atmosphere is more relaxed and as a fish and chips shop should be. In the summer there are tables out on the street where you can sit to enjoy your battered fish. The portions are rather substantial, which is no problem for me, but know your limits and order accordingly.

If you're craving fish and chips this is a good bet. It's pretty famous now and tends to be on part of the tourist trail but if you go during a weekday you can avoid all that. The portions are fairly epic so better to under order and then go back if you're still hungry. The fish can sometimes be a bit oily but don't let you put it off - just ask the staff nicely and they'll make it how you want.

I had the best fish and chips in London at this place! The crispy batter and tender fish were absolutely delicious. The portion size was generous, and the service was top-notch. If you're in London and craving some classic British fare, this is the place to go. Highly recommended!

I was craving fish and chips while in London. A local friend recommended this place and it did not disappoint. The batter they used for the fish was so good with the right amount of crunch. The cod was also flaky and moist. I also tried the sticky toffee pudding and it was soft and good enough. I would come back to this place. It's usually busy because of the location.

After doing some research the Rock and Sole was identified as a good spot for traditional style British fish and chips. We did order both a cod and Haddock option. Both were decent and very similar tasting. The cod did have a thick layer of skin inside the batter that I would have passed on. If going be clear if you want tap water vs bottles water. The assumption if you ask for flat that you want bottled. Staff were friendly. The tartar sauce that was served with the fish was good.

A Londoner friend recommended this place, about 5 minutes walk from Covent Garden market. The fish and chips was really good, service was prompt and courteous and the food price was reasonable. We came around 3.00pm and there were only a few tables available so I think at peak hours, you probably have to wait a bit to get a table as the restaurant seems to be quite popular. As usual, avoid the busy hours.

Great food, reasonable price and portion. Staff are really friendly and nice. Very busy restaurant, people come and go both dining in and take away. Definitely coming back again to try other dishes.

It was a nice place, friendly customer service, there is a service charge. It was good fish, could have been less dry, good batter, chips were very traditionally British which were good, just not personally a favourite. Really liked the calamari. Tartare was amazing. Did find it just a touch on the more pricey side. I'd go back if I couldn't find anywhere else or needed a reliable fish n chips, probably take away.

Solid fish & chips place. Massive pieces of fish. I had the Haddock. The batter was really light and not too greasy. The chips were maybe too traditional for our liking.

The go-to fish and chips spot that you’ll want to take your friends to. Menu offers a large selection of fish, with the cod and skate dish being my personal favourites. I wasn’t too impressed with the chips, given this is a fish and chips spot, but the calamari made up for that. Service was friendly. The outdoor seating was comfortable, although I wouldn’t say it had an “atmosphere”.

It claims to be the oldest fish and chips joint. Well the cod fish was great and so were the prawns.Service is good with the staff being polite and helpful.Well the atmosphere is not very relevant as bulk of the people order fish and chips ...mostly cod and are pretty focused on eating it and enjoying it. Prior reservation is recommended as otherwise you could end up waiting for half hour or more.Must visit specially if you happen to be around Covent Garden.

The fish and chips are 1 piece of fish, but huge! You could easily share one appetizer and 1 fish n chips for 2 people. I personally don’t like the chips be they are very thick cut and not crispy. We loved the Camembert which is basically fried cheese but served with a super yummy jam.

This place is quite busy, but the food is good. They have a few fishes that you don't see often on the menu at any other fish and chips place (like skate, rock, etc.). They offer 2 sizes: Regular and Large with the approximated weight of the fish written down, plus it comes with chips (of course🙄). The prices are a bit higher than the usual places, but the portion and quality are high, and let's not forget it's in the centre of London, what do you expect? The prices for fish n' chips are approximately £20-£24. Still, i recommend going at least once!

Very delicious!! The fish is very juicy, batter is not too thick, tasted fresh and nice! Chips is crispy outside and soft inside, my favorite type. A big bowl of salad only cost £6. High value. Highly recommended for fish & chips.
