Cant ever have enough of this. The best Indian food I had in entire London. Having Indian food after full 15 days was just so pleasurable. Moreover the staff made me feel like home. The quality of food was amazing and what attracted me the most was the fact that there were equally large number of foreigners eating at the place as Indians.

We went here for a late lunch, we ate the Pav Bhaji & Masala Papad. Both were absolutely delicious and the Masala Papad was loaded with vegetables! For drinks, we had Masala Coke and Chaas. Both were superb, too.
This place has great ambience, comforting and delicious food and very polite and quick staff. I would definitely recommend this place specially because it has a great location and isn't too far from the Main Street!

All masala zone are so similar, its hard to tell the difference which one you have been to. We reserved a table for 5 on friday night and that was a good decision as the place was full. The service was fast and food was good. Their daal makhni is one of the best in london. Would come again.

One of the high rated Indian restaurants In London with top décor and ambience.

However, it does not do justice to it's name 'Masala' and the curries are usually blend just like majority Indian restaurants in London. Grand Thali is a real good option for a complete varied dinner- though a sweet and more breads (at least 2 rotis) should be provided with Thali. Also, I see people complaining about quantity of food. But I guess all fine dines provide a small quantity of dishes like samosa chat where focus is on visually appealing stuff so you can't blame them.

Not many options as a vegetarian but they get right the ones they serve. Fast and friendly service.

I've been ordering from Masala Zone for months and the food is always delicious. This time I asked for Fresh Lentil of the day and they had Yellow Lentils. If they have yellow lentils when YOU are eating there, don't think twice about ordering it. Also, the Chettinad Pepper Chicken is a little spicy, but awesome with coca cola. Can't wait to eat here again soon.

Looks quite fancy from inside. Ordered Masala Chai which was quite spicy than usual. Rotis were typical Indian. Reminds me of Delhi Rotis. Butter Chicken & Dal Makhani were so yummy. Gol gappe were alright. One cannot find the typical Indian Gol Gappa Paani here in London.

After a long and busy week I went out for authentic Indian meal. This place is proper Indian. I ordered the veg Thali and got an option for undhiyu as main dish. It was one of the most authentic undhiyu I ever had outside of home. You don't get this kind of quality even in India. Loved it. The thali portions are adequate and I only ordered a couple of rotis as extra. Will repeat.

I've been to the MZ at Covent Garden but it was my first at the Soho one. To begin with, the ambiance is nicer as compared to the Covent Garden one & it seems more spacious as well.

The food was excellent and the service is very quick - even on a weekend. The servers were prompt and friendly, the food was fabulous and once again, the ambiance is great!

I would have preferred a little more in terms of the variety on the menu - such as fish curry, chicken curry apart from butter chicken, lamb biryani, etc. Nevertheless, I would highly recommend this place. Especially, if you're taking a non-Indian for an Indian experience.

You can also try the much heard about - Amrut single malt here!

We ordered Goan prawns, sev puri, lamb shank and Alleppey Prawn curry.

Costs around 80 for two, including drink each.

Okay so we had to wait a while to get seated here but it was so worth it! The service is brilliant and the food was prompt. The chicken skewers from the starters section were like amazing 😍 However, lamb curry was a tiny bowl with like 5 cubes of meat and still ridiculously expensive👎 Overall, a wicked dining experience. I have been in this industry for quite a while now but One thing which i have never seen in any of the restaurants anywhere in the world is that MASALA ZONE has a totally separate kitchen for both veg n non veg.

Hats off to the owners.

Is it me or is Indian food becoming less available on the London dining scene? I can recall so many Indian restaurants in London, especially in Soho just a few years back but now they’re almost gone. Instead new breeds are opening their doors, leaving the “British Curry House” behind and replacing it with more traditional cooking. I’m sort of glad of the quality change but I do miss the old haunts. One restaurant which has been here for all that time however and thriving is Masala Zone in Soho. The brand opened on Soho’s Marshall Street site back in 2001 and after becoming incredibly popular is now a well recognised brand across London with a total of 7 sites. These guys know Indian food and how to cook it.

Masala zone is a moderately priced value for money Indian eatery in the heart of London. Located in soho (9, Marshall Street) and near the Marble Arch.... The food however surpasses expectations.... Try the array of thalis on the menu. We tried the Thaki with Mutton Rogan Josh... Slightly exuberantly spiced with cinnamon, cardamon and clove and Alleppy Prawn curry.... Coconut curry spiced delicately with Red Chilli and Tamarind.... Awesome.... And the chicken egg curry with streamed rice is worth a try. The thalis also come with fragrant basmati rice, two veggies ( potato spinach and mushroom corn... The latter is finger licking good), yellow dal and papadams and three chutneys..... The coriander, mint and Tamarind chutney blew our tongue and mind away!!!
Trivia for all William Blake fans.... The man was born next door to Masala zone Soho.... So bask in London culture as your palate is transported to Sudh Desi Cuisine!!!!

Great Indian Restaurant in Soho. I went two days ago with 2 Indian friends, following a few recommendations.

We were not disappointed.

We had a selection of street food - Bhel, Dahi Puri, and Pao Bhaji. Between us we had a Thali, mixed grill, and a fish curry. Finished off with Kulfi and Gulab Jamun.

My friends commented that this was the best Indian food they had had outside India. The street food had a stylish presentation, which the waiter said was new. The flavours were tangy and intense. Main courses were equally good, particularly the Thali – bowls of different dishes giving great variety. I loved the Kulfi. The Gulab Jamun though very sweet, had a good juicy texture.

The art painted on the wall was refreshingly different. Service was relaxed and friendly.

The bill came to £85 between the three of us, which included a bottle of wine, which was good value for the quality

Delicious Thali. I dined with two friends (26 October 2011) at Masala Zone in Soho. We had early dinner reservations (6pm), as we flew in that morning from the USA and Canada. The place is quite lively and filled up quickly. The acoustics was pretty bad, but we still had a very nice time together.

My friend Lee selected Masala Zone for its Thali, which we all ordered. Thali is a medley of different dishes served on large platters. I selected the butter chicken for my meat course (you can choose chicken, lamb, shrimp, etc), which came with curry vegetables, lentils, raita, chapatis (whole wheat bread), and rice, all for about £11.50. Everything was scrumptious and the chicken tender!

While this is a chain restaurant, I thought the food was well prepared (the flavors of each dish blended well), and reasonably priced, especially in expensive London. I would definitely return here the next time I'm in London. I'll have to search out for a similar type of place where I live.

Masala Zone is the budget arm of the fine Masala World (Chutney Mary) restaurant group. Branded as 'London's leading casual dining indian restaurants' dishes are inexpensive yet quality isn't compromised. In most branches you can see your food being prepared from fresh ingredients in an open plan kitchen, right in front of you. Thalis are a speciality and a favourite of mine - a silver tray containing small portions of several dishes such as popadom and chutney, a main curry dish of your choice, two side vegetable dishes, rice and dal (lentils) - for about £8.00. A grand thali also includes chapati, salad and raita for about £10.00. Curried noodle bowls are also excellent - spicy, soup-like dishes - the only downside is if you're on a lunch hour break, they seem to go on forever and can take a long time to get through! Keep an eye on the website too - even though the menu is good value anyway, there are regular promotions and discounts. Restau

a small cosy Masala Zone branch with good customer service. It was two of us for dinner and we were just looking for something light. We ordered the gol guppas (spicy puff pastries filled with chilli and tamrinds water) - a North Indian speciality. We also ordered the Grand Thali which included a starter, pickles, poppadoms, yoghurt, two vegetables , lentils and rice. Diners have the option of choosing one dish (We chose the mildy spiced Butter Chicken). Our order also consisted of two drinks - Kingfisher beer and a Mango & Passionfruit mojito. However, I was personally not too happy with the Mojito and requested to send it back(they offered me to chose another drink but i further refused and they kindly took this off the bill). Overall a great deal for £21 which included everything mentioned above and excellent customer service!

Ok I admit i am indian and love indian food lol. and this chain.  Celebrated birthday with friends and family. Incredible service. Would recommend for lunch and dinner or a celebration. The food is so tasty but healthy and you come away full but feeling good. A very wide choice, particularly of vegetarian. It was very crowded with a long queue but we had booked and the staff were very attentive nevertheless. Lovely atmosphere. Been twice since then. Yum!

We both went for the grand thali option - a large platter with a choice of curry, two veg dishes, poppadum, roti, chutneys, a small salad and a dhal. I had a very tasty chicken curry (the name has slipped my mind sorry!), but my partner's lamb vindaloo was amazing - spicy, but not so much that you can't taste the actual flavours. Very tender, very meaty. Our bill came to around £32, including drinks - which for Soho, is a great deal.

Will definitely be coming back.

The word ”authethtic” has never felt so apt as when I use it to describe the offerings from Masala Zone. I am a frequent visitor to this place and it all started with my very first visit 2 years ago. New to London, needless to say terribly homesick , my husband decided to treat me to some delicious Indian cuisine. He couldn’t have chosen a better place.

The instant I walked it , I was greeted by a beautiful idol of the elephant headed Lord Ganesha and a massive urn decorated with floating flowers. The walls an earthy brown with delicate warli paintings all over.A welcome sight and instantly made me feel at home:)

I love Indian street foods,so gorging on CHAATS was in order.A masala Coke is lovely with the chaats and I can rarely stop at one masala coke. We went A’ la carte and got some spicy dal (lentil curry) and plain rice to go with it,closest in comparison to, my favourite comfort food which is varan bhaath- meaning simple yellow moong dal with ghee and steaming boiled rice!
The starters that I love the most at Masala Zone:

Sev Puri- thats small fired crunchy puris topped with mashed potato mix spiced with finely chopped tomatoes, sev which is the fine yellow crisp gram vermicelli, green mango bits and a tangy tamrind chutney with some finely chopped coriander sprinkled all over.
Bhajiya in Hindi – thin slices of onion coated with gram flour mixed with spices and deep fried served with green chutney and tangy tamarind chutney.

Ragda Pattice is fried potato patty served with a gravy made from dried white peas cooked in a thick garvy and spiced with many different flavours topped off with various chutneys and sev. Dahi Puri is made by stuffing the puffed puris with a mix of mashed potatoes, sprouts, chutneys, sev and adding dollops of flavoured curd over it.Great for those who want to try a chaat dish and still avoid anything too spicy as the curd soothes your palate.

Last month we had a lot of friends and family visit us from India and U.S.A, all craving to have ”authentic” Indian food. All the edible looking snaps I have taken with my new Samsung Galaxy sIII are taken over several dinners.

Highly recommended are the tasty and varied ”Regular thalis” (mixed platter with a lentils, vegetable preparation of the day, another mix vegetable, some fried papad, rotis or rice as you choose,a sweet mango chutney, a green chutney and the main curry dish that you choose from the veg or non veg menu)which are quite filling and satisfy any cravings one has of either sea food, lamb, chicken or just good old plain veggie fare.

Masala Zone (MZ) exists in at least eight locations in London going by the data posted on Zomato. I have definitely gone to three – this one, then the one atop Selfridges and the one at Covent Garden with its décor that uses colorful Rajasthani puppets.

MZ is a chain of restaurants created, and (hopefully still) run at least in part, by the queen of Indian cuisine, Camellia Panjabi – the culinary legend who introduced regional Indian cooking to the UK in a decisive manner through her pioneering restaurants and in a sense, introduced Chinese & Thai cuisine to India given her long association with the Taj Group of Luxury Hotels there. I think she runs her UK restaurants with sister Namita and bro-in-law Ranjit Mathrani – at least I hope she still does;-)

What I mostly drop in to have at MZ is their THALI, especially on days I miss food from back home badly. They have two kinds – a GRAND one and a REGULAR one. The first is a bigger deal with more items while the latter is what is referred to in India as an “Executive Lunch” meant as great working lunch, more quickly imbibed than the grand one which presumes a more leisurely meal break!

Now, for the uninitiated, THALI literally means a plate – it connotes the multiple-course Indian meal that is served in one-go on a thali. So, typically a thali will contain salad, starters, main course dishes (veg and non-veg), Indian breads/rice, curd item, pickles, lentils and rounded-off with a sweet.

The REGULAR THALI of MZ contains one PAPPADUM (half-moons of a roasted, disc-like nacho-esque wafer) & CHUTNEY, 2 VEGETARIAN DISHES (these change daily), 1 DAL or lentil to be had with either rice or 2 CHAPATIS (unleavened Indian bread).

Their GRAND THALI has all the goodness of the Regular Thali plus KACHUMBER (an Indian salad of onion, cucumber & tomatoes, sometimes also raddish with a squeeze of lime), an hors d'oeuvre or CANAPÉ, RAITA (whisked yogurt with cucumbers, tomato), one wholewheat CHAPATTI and RICE (enough serving for one).

There are 5 variants in the thali depending on whether you have opted for regular or grand and what your choice of the main course dish was from Vegetarian, Fish, Prawn, Chicken or Lamb with prices ranging from £9.90 for a Regular Veg Thali to £13.20 for a Grand Lamb one!! I have mostly ordered only the chicken or lamb one and it has always been very satisfying!

The other items from their menu that usually get combined with my thali order is their selection of Indian street food items called CHAAT which is sweet & savory. They offer 5 basic fail-safe varieties from BHALLA PAPDI (£4.35) to GOL GUPPA (£4.65). I have to usually remind myself to be restrained in their consumption or else I would not be able to do justice to the thali – the chaat items are inherently very addictive, so it’s a tough call!

Especially if I am sharing the meal, I make sure I also smuggle in a side order from their Drinks menu – MANGO LASSI being a favourite – it is basically a smoothie or thick shake with yogurt that has been combined with mango puree. Very filling – almost a meal in itself!! MJ serves 4 variants and my other favourite is the SAFFRON one. All are priced at £2.10.

Sometimes one has also ordered the other main course dishes with Indian breads or BIRYANI (they serve two kinds – Vegetable and Chicken, served with a bowl of dal), depending on the fancy that strikes me that day. Their CHICKEN RIZZALA, LAMB NIHARI and ROGAN JOSH are also recommended – they’re all under £8.50.

The service has always been very warm and efficient. The crew members are very friendly and tend to remember the preferences of regular patrons.

This particular outlet is beautiful, spread out and with a décor that is vibrant in its Indian feel! I simply love the use of warli paintings done on the walls, warli being a tribal painting style from a state in Western India called Maharashtra (in which the city of Mumbai is located; as also Pune where I live). Warli basically employs stick-figures with great skill in conveying images from a pastoral life – it is usually dual-toned, one flat background colour (typically terracotta red) upon which the figures are drawn using primarily white. In this Soho outlet, they have done a contemporary design using the same style to great effect! I love the themes they have chosen for each of their restaurants in fact.

I sure am going to drop in at MZ whenever I am next in town – hope you do too.

I love restaurants that offer an Indian Thali, though don't often go to Indian chains. But Masala Zone is an exception I'd return to. The Thali is by far the best (and best value) way to experience Indian cuisine, with curried vegetables, rice, poppadoms and a main curry on the plate all for around £12. It's easy to customise your Thali here, but despite the huge choice every dish came out perfectly cooked, as ordered and fresh. The best curry I have had out of the Midlands/North probably!

Best 'Indian Thali' in London...yet.

I love variety in my food, so I often order Thali - an Indian meal which includes range of curries and accompaniments (see attached pic). I have had many Thalis in different restaurants in London, but this one at Masala Zone stands out for its authentic Indian taste and balanced spices. Oh the fiery 'Paneer Chilly' - spicy to bring tears in your eyes, but balanced enough to eat and savor. I thoroughly enjoyed my food.

Although, Masala Zone's thali had relatively lesser number of items, but each of them were full of taste and flavors. Service I found bit slow - took us 15 mins to pay the bill, but staff was very courteous. It was packed on Sunday night, but didn't experience any noise or chatter.

So, I came out pretty happy and satisfied. And, now looking for excuse to visit them again...soon.

Established in 2001 in Soho by Namita Panjabi, Camellia his sister and her husband Ranjit Mathrani (restaurateurs behind Chutney Mary and Veeraswamy) Masala Zone serves small Indian dishes in beautiful dining rooms in warm tones and modern decorations, all with different, whether of movie posters of the thirties, puppets of Rajasthan, or tribal frescoes theme. It has now seven Masala Zone in London, and they are all nice places to enjoy very simple dishes like chicken tikka masala, the puris and other bhajis. But above all you can eat thalis, these plates originating in Gujarat where there are lots of little bowls filled with good things, like dal, dishes of potatoes or spinach, curried meat or fish.

Food was the star!! Hearty portion, fresh and tasty. On the other hand, must stress the service is a letdown. I found the staff looking a bit scruffy, a couple of them touching their hair, scratching beard, and serving our drinks, didn't know the basic crumb down procedure and served courses without clearing dirty cutlery or clearing the crumbs. The atmosphere is good. Quite Reasonable for the location.

I ate here with a few other people and we got a bunch of small plates to share as starters, and one large plate each(which we also shared) as the main course. The food was amazing, really some of the best Indian food that I have had. The Goan Fried Prawns were one standout, as while not being traditional Goan food they were absolutely fantastic. If you are looking for some good Indian food in London, any of Masala Zones would be a great choice!

Not to be judged by the cover! We only ate vegetarian food, but it was well spiced, tasty and authentic. The staff were super friendly, not too much, but informative and helpful. We enjoyed our whole dining experience. The sharing platter was filling and so good.

Great atmosphere and service! Suitable for bigger groups. Quite liked the food too, but the 'mild' spicy was a bit too spicy for me.

Great Indian restaurant with varieties from different Indian regions like Gujarat, Kerala and Punjab! Taste is really good and the overall restaurant atmosphere is pleasant! We took several choices to share and all were tasty!

Good enough Indian restaurant in Soho. Don’t have too high expectations though. The only issue I have is that payment for optional service charge was taken without my consent. Also it appears a bit expensive for what it is.

Really nice food!! Quite rich flavours :) Staff very friendly and quick service. The only downfall, was that it was extremely hot. No air-con or fresh air coming in.
