The Anchor and hope is a very nice place for dinner. The shrimp I chose was delicious. Cooked just as needed with a great smell. The staff is welcoming and very helpful. Recommended when in London đź‘Ť
We popped in for a quick drink before a visit to the Tate Modern and dinner at another restaurant- when we arrived at the other restaurant we decided none of the mains looked particularly good so quickly paid the bill for our drinks and nibbles then made a bee-line back to the Anchor and Hope.Â
It was already busy earlier in the evening and was still turning over a roaring trade when we returned around 830ish. We settled in with a drink before being seated about 20 minutes later- not a bad wait all things considered and the staff were very good about letting us know when the table would be ready.Â
We ordered the lamb's neck with dauphinois, vegetables, and salad for two, pluse a carafe of the house red. The portion is huge- there's a lot of meat on those necks, the potatoes are ridiculously rich and well the salad was just unnecessary. This was perhaps not the best move for 2 people who had downed a couple of drinks and nibbles already... our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs on this occasion so we perhaps didn't enjoy it as much as we should have.
But we will be back because there were a lot of things on the menu that appealed and it's got a wonderfully buzzy atmosphere!
Very different and interesting, but a bit expensive and rushed experience. Had an interesting scallops with lentils and bacon dish, partner had the beef provencale. Shared the flourless choc cake which was delicious and had beer/pimms each. Bill came to ÂŁ50 for two on a Thursday night. It might have been just us, we were going to theatre so had about 50min to eat, but the place was very full and we felt a little rushed to order...though food arrived in literally minutes. Very friendly staff, I thought the place itself wasn't anything special, interesting that they only have 2(!) two-people tables, rest of us are on tables with other people, which I'm fine with. Has outdoor seating and bar area, 10min walk from Waterloo, near The Old and Young VIc. Might go back another time to try something different. Also, note they don't take bookings except Sunday I think.
My favourite place to eat in London. This is definitely the place to go to if you are in search of delicious gastro pub food. It is a fantastic venue for long lunches with a group of friends and is perfect in both summer and winter. The chefs really know what they're doing and the food is always fresh and seasonal, but I must add, it is not your stereotypical pub grub. When I land at Heathrow next, The Anchor & Hope will be at the top of my 'must do' list. Overall, a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and amazing food.
Food: 8.5 / 10
Service: 7 / 10
Ambience: 7 / 10
What gastropubs are meant to be - fresh, innovative food, cracking beer (& good wine list to boot) and attentive, knowledgeable service. A gem. Deserves the great reviews it's had elsewhere.
Rillettes and Stew. Had the rabbit rillettes and the Lamb's neck stew with scalloped potatoes. Cost us an arm and a leg, but it warmed us up, and made us insanely happy on a very dreary and cold November night.
Arrive early, good lunch. Luckily we arrived early for lunch and easily got a table, the place filled up very quickly. Really enjoyed the lunch, very nicely done. Although my clothes smelled like a deep fryer after leaving, not sure what that's about (??) hopefully just a one-off, because I enjoyed the place and would like to go back.
Relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Good food. But aim for an early dinner as waiting for a table can be a bore.
Manages too be both vibrant and charming. Despite the fact that they don't take reservations for dinner, so you either turn up early or settle in for a 2 hour wait for your table, I think this is one of the very best gastro pubs in town. The floor manager has the most amazing memory! although the same can not be said for all the waiters!
A London favourite. If you were rude enough to put a gun to my head and say "you're only allowed to go to one restaurant for the rest of your life" then this would probably be it. Informal, well cooked food served by lively, knowledgeable staff. OK, it's a bit cramped, ok the table might wobble, but maybe I like a bit of rough in a bustling atmosphere over clean, well-defined lines and white tableclothes in an atmosphere where you can hear a pin drop.
Must-haves? Beetroot, horseradish and watercress salad to start, lamb shoulder for 5-ish with life-shortening pommes dauphinoises and the praline ice-cream. And waddle out. They also do a mean cassoulet. One or two staples remain throughout but other things on the menu are seasonal - see leg of kid and courgettes with mint, for example.
Get there for 6pm and get your name down. If you feel as though you have to book to eat, pop over 32 Great Queen Street for similar fayre.

Anchor and Hope's cooking is definitely better than your average pub and price wise is also very reasonable. Located right next to a tube station, it's no wonder why it's so popular to both the locals and tourists.
We recently had a wonderful lunch with lovely friends at our favourite gastro pub in London. We caught up at the Anchor and Hope - a terrific pub in Waterloo which serves fantastic seasonal food with a bit of a twist. Definitely not your usual pub grub, this place is always packed and Sundays are generally the only day you can book, otherwise getting there early is essential if you want a table. We had a lovely long lunch with our dear friends - there is something so re-energising about catching up with the people you love, sharing a meal, a drink and endless laughs. I loved it and I love this pub too! The lovely London weather gave me a great excuse to try out my new trench coat. This is me in my DKNY striped top, Burberry trench, French Sole suede flats, Mulberry Bag and my favourite jeans in the world - Lee. This is me channelling Picasso with a striped top. One fabulous pub - The Anchor and Hope - Waterloo.
The tables in the Restaurant section are for sharing. We found the service was a bit hit and miss but the food certainly hit the mark, with its rustic style and good quality ingredients. My earlier experiences were before the recent change of Chef, however with the kind of reputation the Anchor & Hope has I would expect it to continue to deliver top class gastropub fare.
Living relatively close and spending a lot of time around South East London, I've made a fair few visits to and given many more recommendations of the Anchor and Hope.
So after seeing Six Degrees of Separation at The Old Vic (which I thought as brilliant) we trundled along The Cut to the Anchor & Hope pub for a late dinner. I have wanted to try this place out for ages and had always been slightly put off by the no booki
There are few destination Gastro pubs in Britain. Some of us are lucky enough to have some near our homes. Apart from The Eagle on Farringdon Road where on some days you can get a beautifully cooked "Onglet" with a red wine and shallott reduction , I woul
I started with the potted shrimp, served sans pot on a plate with melted butter.
I know it may seem unAmerican and possibly anti-food to say this, but I've never been one for Thanksgiving. This partially has to do with my dislike of roast turkey, but there's more to it than that - I don't like being told when I should be appreciative
Since I lived in the neighbourhood, I had to try every single pub, bar and restaurant. Usually I do not go to pubs that often but I gave the Archor & Hope Pub a try.
It was quite hectic when we went as the whole place was full and there were barely any seats available to seat both outside and inside. We were waiting for a while for a table but eventually got one.Â
I ordered a potted shrimp with a melted butter, something I had never tried before. It happened to be quite good. We also had a few drinks, but what I also liked about the pub was the great selection of beers and spirits it offered.Â
The menu is delicious and although you have to wait for a bit, all the staff are quite helpful and it is worth visiting the Anchor & Hope Gastro Pub!
The Anchor & Hope is a fantastic restaurant and pub near Waterloo station. The menu offers a great range of exciting dishes, which have always exceeded my expectation on the many visits I've made here. The dining area is large enough to accommodate a largeish party and the feel is upmarket yet relaxed with a mish-mash of furniture and fittings.
The bar serves a range of good beer, good wine and spirits and the staff are friendly and attentive. Service is a little slow as this is a popular and fairly large venue, but its well worth the wait.
How many times have I been here and still come back? Too many. On a street littered with eateries this one trumps them all. Always new and exciting ales on tap and an ever changing menu. You really get a great feeling that these chefs know what they are doing and are true pioneers in their field. This puts all other pub/restaurants to shame.
We chanced it for a lunch here with our little baby - the anchor and hope made us feel like real adults again! We had grouse lasagna and a big pork chop, simple greens and good bread and butter with a glass of wine. You could tell the food was made with love - delicious, saucy, comforting on a cool autumn day, no pretensions but still elevated and elegant. Our daughter slept long enough for us to eat uninterrupted and she loved meeting the kind chefs too! Thanks so much for a perfect lunch ❤️
The food we had on the day was a slightly salty. Nevertheless was not bad. I expected a little bit more preparation on the parma ham and melon starter though.
Warm, efficient welcome. Great service, splendidly yummy food. We ate light but soooo much to like on the menu I’ll just have to come back and try it!

Very good gastropub on The Cut not far from Southwark tube station. Three cask beers on handpump when I last visited. A few tables outside some of them covered.
On the latest visit, I was popping in for a quick pint before seeing a play at the Young Vic which is a few yards away. But the pub is primarily noted for its food offering.
Love it here. Such great value and fantastic cooking. Perfect for a Saturday lunch. Friendly and not over zealous staff. Great to have a few bottles and leave feeling stuffed and happy. A star!
Wonderful staff. Great food. Especially the desserts we tried 5 and they were all excellent. Would love to go back to try more mains.
Very welcoming and knowledgeable waiter put us at ease all evening. Not sure his name sorry.

Great evening to celebrate a birthday ! They’re dog friendly and the staff are super patient .. you wouldn’t think so but they do a mean negroni !! Good wine list and great cocktails they def know their drinks ! Food wise it’s question of getting what you want quickly because it does go ! Not super extensive on the vegetarian front but what they have is mighty good and generous !! They’re happy to bring all in one go especially as we all wanted to try reach others dishes ! So very amenable!! All in all I definitely recommend for an evening out .. shame they didn’t do a little birthday treat but I guess it would have been de trop .?
Nice place, best to book ahead probably, only one table suitable for a group of three not already booked when I got there at 5pm on Wednesday. Food was tasty, good quality, nice selection of interesting food. Service was good overall, if a bit 'gruff'. We shared the seven hour lamb neck, simple & tasty
You may think this is a pub, but it doesn't have the typical pub optionsand you will be impressed with the food, amazing wine list and great service. It is conveniently located under 10 minutes walk from Waterloo Station.
This is the perfect place to meet people that live around London and enjoy amazing food. I highly recommend the lamb neck.
And all the desserts were great as well.
Haven’t been since before lockdown, but the food is as good as I remember with the added bonus of now being able to make reservations.
Special mention for the Dover sole
Delicious food, lovely staff who seem genuinely passionate about what they do, and a unique old-timey atmosphere. Love that they never have music on!
This restaurant has the best service I have ever encountered! Went last night for dinner and the two gentlemen looking after us went above and beyond to talk us through the menu and make it a brilliant evening. The food was also amazing.
Just hands down the best “revisited” Sunday Roast you’ll try. The beef is always spot on. Their gratin dauphinois. The lamb was just beyond this world! I will continue going back. Thank you.
I am very impressed with this pub restaurant. A real buzz and nice vibe about the place. Food was great with some unusual choices available if you are feeling adventurous. Good beer selection. Waitress was helpful. Very convenient for Waterloo Station if you are willing to walk 10 minutes.
Wonderful little dinner visit to a reasonable priced gastropub in Waterloo.
Starters (so good I ate it and forgot to photograph- 1) French beans 2) San Marino(?) tomato on bread), mains and dessert were delicious - especially the rhum sorbet.
The cocktails were delicious too!
The staff were friendly, very helpful and attentive. Provided info and suggestions on food and drinks when requested.
Definitely worth another visit!
The pub looks lovely and the table is comfortable.
The food taste good but not exceptional. The do have some yummy & unusal puddings.
Lovely area and service is great.
Had a lovely anniversary meal here. Service was exceptional, food delicious, expensive but top quality wines. Not cheap but actually worth it.
