Tried the roast duck, nice and succulent. Compares favourably with Four Seasons. Service was prompt and efficient. Will return the next time I visit London

If you've heard a little about it, people tend to compare Gold Mine and Four Seasons. This is really subjected to personal preference. Four Seasons is much more popular, but Gold Mine is picking up! When I first visited Gold Mine in 2012, the shop was fairly small with just one shoplot. Today, they have occupied the shop next to it and have expanded!

This place deserve my 5 stars

Hands down one of the best Chinese food joint I've ever tried. Ordered the roast duck & deep fried king prawn in crushed garlic goldmine style. They have this special blend of chili oil that worked well with any dish and nothing like I ever tried before.

The 4.3 rating they have now just don't do justice. Awesome food, must try!

So many people had told me about the Roast Duck at Gold Mine. I have lunch in this area every 7-10 days and end up at My default picks for Thai or Spanish food most of the time, so this time I set out determined to eat the roast duck at Gold Mine and check what the fuss was all about.

Oh my! That duck was gorgeous! The fat melting in the mouth was like a beautiful piece of pork fat - I've never tasted duck fat like that & at the same time the skin was crispy too and the meat ever so tender.

My favourite meat is pork, but the barbecued pork (also good) did not hold a candle to this roast duck!

I chose the Singapore vermicelli noodles to go with my meal. They were just what I wanted - really thin fine noodles, fried up street food style and just perfect with the fat of that perfect duck. All 3 dishes for 22£.

I've got to take the family here to try this duck. I was lucky to not have to brave a queue at 2:30pm, but the restaurant was quite full. However, I must say that standing in line would be worth it for this roast duck. Just the duck & a side of noodles or rice would be perfect.

Would advice to make booking before arriving. Long queue, full of people, tight spaces. Nevertheless, great service, good food. Would come back again.

The race is on to find the most tasty roast duck in London. Rumor has it the chefs from Four Seasons moved to Goldmine. One of the authentic Chinese Hong Kong restaurants, along Bayswater. It is popular amongst the Chinese community, specializing succulent BBQ juicy meats hanging by the shop window ready for you to be butchered on your plate.

Ordering my favourite dish of three BBQ meat, and rice, there’s the usual choice of a peking roast duck, soy chicken, crispy belly pork and BBQ pork.

It’s a simple dish with tons of meat, topped on steamed rice with a sweet sauce poured over. Peking duck beautifully done, fragrant, tender meat with a thin crisp skin. Char siu soaked up the sticky sweet savory flavours. Underneath, a bed of steamed vegetables seem like a standard thing.

So on one of the coldest days of the year so far, we decided to go to a prosperous restaurant to warm our tummies and wallets.  As you may know, Chinese people are very superstitious and place great import on good omens. Although the name of the place is Gold Mine, we did not manage to fill ourselves with the usual riches associated with the name (ie gold, money) but instead managed to gorge ourselves on more savory delights.

Great food and service!. Their duck - both Peking and crispy - is unsurpassed, and in common with Four Seasons, many visitors have ventured in from Singapore and Malaysia, where these restaurants have a great reputation. Their chilli and salt squid is to die for, the lobster noodle heavenly, and their tofu hot pots simply fantastic.

Part of what makes Gold Mine especially enjoyable is the fact that the food available reflects the heritage of many of the staff working there; yes, it is a Chinese restaurant, but in common with the staff, many of the dishes are Malaysian in origin; order the kangkong belacan - you'll find this in any Chinese restaurant in Malaysia, but certainly not in London. Tasty!

I can definitely recommend the Gold Mine for some good Chinese food if you are in the neighbourhood. If my endorsement doesn't swing it, one of our noodle soup visits was enjoyed sitting next to Sydney-based cafe owner, TV personality, and cookbook author Bill Granger and his family. It's telling that Bill preferred to eat in a cheap Chinese up the road rather than his newly opened London cafe isn't it? Unripe bananas and avocados have been served on more than one visit at his flaccid attempt to recreate the Sydney cafe scene. Oddly enough, we had planned to bake Bill's coconut bread on the afternoon of that very lunch. It turned out better than the one you could order at his new gaff. Weird, huh?

And the final verdict - This is, by far, one of the better Chinese restaurant I have ever been to in London. There were enough highlights and gems on the night to lure me back into this little joint again. But as a general tips for Chinese dining, always drag your friends along and the more the merrier. This way you get to enjoy lots more dishes in true Chinese style. And the damaged? All these for less that £20 per head including tips. Such bargain for such good food!

has the best Cantonese roast duck in London and indeed, the duck was superb. Fatty, sweet and full of flavour. Every table had the same order: duck, veg (garlic gai lan) and rice - very classic Chinese. Though remember to not order the soup noodles, weren’t nice.   Contact Info Tube: Bayswater / Queensway 102 Queensway   London W2 3RR 020 7792 8331

It was one of the nicer hot and sour soups I've had, although the ones I usually have are from takeaways so not only are they bigger in portions, but possibly not as fresh as the ones from restaurants. Gold Mine's version of the soup was OK, nothing too impressive, though I reckon if I'd had it while it was still hot (ie when it was served to me instead of just letting it sit there) it might have been nicer.

The place offers delicious Chinese cuisine. I have visited this restaurant a couple of times and have not been disappointed. The duck here is a must-have and is better than the duck served at many other popular restaurants. The fried squid rings and the ma pow tofu is also delicious. I would definitely recommend this place.

This is one of my favourite restaurants in the area. It is surrounded by many similar options, but easily beats all competition. The standard-fare dishes are extremely well-prepared and delicious, but the winners are their original creations like the Gum Sar prawns. These deep fried prawns, available both with shell on or off, are heavenly and mouth-watering.
The lunch menu usually serves freshly roasted duck, pork and char siu, but our favourite is the Malaysian brisket curry. They also occasionally serve complimentary soup to regulars.
The atmosphere is clean, simple and idealistic, but the food is the winner.

Rumour has it among the Chinese community, that the crown for the best roast duck in town has passed from Four Seasons Gold Mine. Like Four Seasons, they offer to take the duck off the bone there. The English speaking staff are attentive and welcoming. The duck is tender with a good amount of meat and one gets a plate of this to go with whatever noodle or rice based dish that tickles your fancy on that particular day. I would certainly recommend that you give Gold Mine a go if you like good roast duck.

Although it is true that a lot of people queue up at the neighbours of this place to have the roast duck, but I rather suggest coming here for the same. I have been visiting this place for several years now, and I have to admire the decor and charm of this place. It is very basic and simple, and ensures that focus is on quality food. The duck tastes amazing, as does the beef strips dish served here. The flavours are exquisite, and the roast duck is the best I have ever had anywhere in the world. It is meaty, succulent and amazing.

After my payday, I decided to treat my in-laws to dinner. They're very traditional Cantonese so they only eat at places they're used to. The locals who had come to this place wee probably the same. I had reserved the table and yet wasn't given a place despite arriving early. After a 30 minute wait, the waiter apologized and offered us complimentary soup. Unfortunately, that's the way it is.

I cannot complain about the food as it is very good and you can find a lot of traditional dishes other than the ones modified for westernised tastes. The duck is specially good. I would also recommend the chef's special, the Japanese tofu with pork and mushrooms served in a clay pot.

I visited this place with my family a couple of days back and had a really good time. The interior of the place was well decorated and pleasant. The portions are large so that's good for sharing. We ordered some spinach and curried lamb, and both the dishes tasted delicious. The soup was simple chicken and was very well prepared.
They had a limited variety of dessert and it didn't quite interest us.

The food is very good here and the owner is very friendly , he do have a personality like famous wrestler undertaker but he is very friendly.
I had Kung Pao Chicken here and it was something very unique as well as super tasty.
The other dishes that I tried were also pretty good.
The side dishes are little expensive so if you thinking of giving this place a visit then make sure that you keep a check on your side dishes.

This mostly crowded, Chinese restaurant is definitely worth a visit!
The quality of service here will not leave you disappointed and so will not the food.
We ordered the pecking duck which came with sumptuous pancakes and some special fried rice. This entire combination worked wonders for me and we were highly impressed by the balance of flavours.
The staff rushes through the service, mostly becuase of the crowded space around.
I would urge everyone to make a booking in advance, else, you will always have to be pushed around for a table.

The duck was tender and really succulent. I had a joyous time and will definitely give it a second visit!

They have quite a mind boggling array of drinks in their menu - but it is relatively easy to read, and I must say the drinks we ordered were quite exceptional. They have some really nice juices and mocktails, if you are looking for non alcoholic options. Try their salads (loved the seared tuna) or the bacon and cheese burger - quite delicious!

The reviews about this place are majorly positive and the restaurant hugely successful , in fact it is one of my most loved restaurants in the city.
The restaurant remains quite full and it is advised one books beforehand. The menu houses the most amazing range of dishes which taste incredible and the prices for the same are also quite affordable. In my opinion, the restaurant serves one of the most brilliant roast duck and it is definitely a must try.
The food was prepared with a lot of care and the flavors were simply impeccable.
The char siew though was not quite good.
I will pleasantly return to have a good time again.

This restaurant is well known for its duck, and in particular its Cantonese roasted duck. There have been stories reaching my ears about Oriental people purchasing packs of these ducks to take them home to their families. It is advisable to book a table in advance, and we went as a large group to enjoy dinner on my birthday, and although it can get cramped inside, the space is pretty cozy.

Goldmine is always buzzing with people, and for good reason. The food is authentic, mouth-watering and it always arrives on your plate hot and steaming. I recommend the Sizzling Sliced Mutton with Ginger and Spring Onion, as it is simply sumptuous.

The service is quick and efficient and the atmosphere is good. If you plan on going in a group, book a table in advance as the restaurant is popular.

Goldmine is just down the road from Bayswater Station and is well worth a visit if you enjoy authentic Oriental cuisine.

My favourite restaurant for roast duck in London. I often get annoyed at the proponents of the Four Seasons' roast duck... i don't think it comes anywhere close to Gold Mine's!

It's best to plan for your meal at Gold Mine as you'll often find a queue for tables during peak hours. My favourite dishes include the roast duck (off the bone), roast pork belly, ma po tofu (spicy tofu with minced pork), kai lan with oyster sauce, and the sizzling king prawns.

Comparable in price to most of the better Chinese restaurants in London, you'll end up paying around 15-20 pounds per head (obviously depending on how ravenous you are at the time).

This place should be on the top of anyone's list of Chinese restaurants in London, give it a shot!

At first I was disappointed that Gold Mine was a Chinese restaurant - my friend had tricked me into thinking we were going to an actual goldmine in London, but on hindsight I realise that may have been a little far-fetched.

The first thing I noticed when arriving at Gold Mine was not actually that it wasn't a goldmine (I'm not that stupid - but I got your attention for this review right?), but that it was very in-demand, particularly among the Asian community. This is a great advertisement for Chinese food, as I always know a Chinese restaurant is good when I'm one of the few non-Chinese people dining there: you know that this is the authentic cuisine and not the lemon chicken and chips that I am used to in my more provincial abode in South Wales.

After a 10 minute wait (long enough to build up the hype and your appetite, but not long enough to make you annoyed enough to yell at a random hobo on the street) we were seated on a large table that was more than adequate for our small party. We ordered some char siu pork, calimari, rice and yu choy. It was a little disappointing that they had ran out of the duck for which they are so renowned (I'm no Sherlock but that could be because it was very popular...) so that's why I've deducted half a point - otherwise I would have given this place 5!

It was possibly the best Chinese food I've had. It was even better than the Four Seasons in Chinatown! The char siu was full of flavour and I may have actually found a vegetable that I actually wanted to eat rather than the usual forcing myself to consume some green veg in order to atone for my tendency to eat a whole 220g bag of Doritos straight after (more to share? Give over...)

The service was minimalist, but efficient and the dexterity with which the waiter collected our plates at great speed made for some great after-dinner entertainment (I really need to get out more. If anyone is willing to donate a We Will Rock You ticket to my cause it'd be much appreciated...)

Pros: Charming char siu, squidilicous salted calimari and a vegetable that I actually kept going back for! AMAZING FOOD!
Cons: no duck!

The absolute mecca for roast duck in London. Make sure you come here early as it is often packed with people queuing for seats and takeaways. I frequent this establishment whenever I am in Bayswater and some of my favourite dishes are the roast duck (off-the-bone), Gold Mine special prawns (pan-fried with butter), crispy belly pork, steamed egg, and beef with aubergine. If you go with a group of friends (4-6) the bill usually comes out at 15-20pounds per head, depending on how many ducks and prawns ordered. The servers are polite, service quick, and food always cooked to a high quality. They even do takeaways for the times when you don't have enough time to queue. 5/5.

Really love the roast duck here. I usually not a duck eater hence this place is the only place where I have my duck cravings. My must go to places whenever I come to London. Their signature eggs is also another dish to die for. One of the must order dish for me. They have the signature crispy duck which tasted super delicious, a fried version of the tradition Peking ducks wrap with popiah skin and the usual condiments. The servers are attentive and always welcoming. It feels more like a family setting than a restaurant where I really enjoy the atmosphere there. Service is prompt even though they are busy. I’ll always visit here whenever I come to London.

All I can say is wow this place is amazing and is easily the best Dim Sum we have had in London, perhaps even the UK. Delicious food, not oily and the prices for central London are reasonable. Very delicious roast duck - much juicier and fattier than what you might get in Asian countries. The morning glory with sambal chili is not spicy enough for my Singaporean tastebuds, but still a crunchy and delicious vegetable. Atmosphere is as authentic as they come, bustling with activity and noise.

Food arrived super fast. Duck was amazing but the pork quite dry, the fried dumplings were average and I wouldn't recommend the 8 mini spring rolls (tasted like the frozen ones from the supermarket). Service charge is included on the receipt but they said the tip goes to the staff. In the UK the service charge= tip, so don't be confused when they ask for tip! It's already on your bill!

- Roast duck rice: duck skin could have been crispier but meat was tender and juicy, and the fats really melted in the mouth. The rice and gravy were really comforting, and definitely ask for chilli because it ties everything together. - Prawn cheong fun: the cheong fun could have been thinner but the prawns were big and this hit the spot too!

As the description says, this is a no-frills Chinese restaurant. I'm posting this after the second vegetarian fried noodles and can confirm this is exactly what I was looking for - the authentic fried noodle flavour, nothing more, nothing less. This is the taste I'm looking for whenever I feel like eating Chinese, so will be definitely coming back. Btw., full disclosure, the second time I actually wanted to try Mandarin Kitchen, but the place was packed, I'm guessing because it's closer to the tube stations. I was able to find a table at Gold Mine both times.

Gold Mine, situated near Notting Hill, offers a satisfying experience for lovers of Cantonese dim sum. I found the quality of their food to be quite good, with a variety of options that did not disappoint. This is a place where you can enjoy a meal without worrying about "stepping on a mine" – every dish we ordered was well-prepared and flavorful. In terms of service, however, it's best to keep expectations modest. While the staff is efficient, the restaurant maintains a casual and no-frills approach to service, which is fairly common in many traditional Chinese eateries. Overall, Gold Mine is a solid choice for authentic Cantonese dim sum in the area. It's a place where the food truly shines, making it worth a visit when in Notting Hill.
