As we settled at the last available indoor table, perusing the menu in search of a suitably fulfilling lunch and trying to forget we were both soaked to the bone, the sun decided to make an appearance, and more customers started to sit outside, enjoying a privileged view on Golborne Road’s comings and goings. Golborne Deli is the kind of place I’d have appreciated in my hometown, back in the days when weekend pleasures were as simple as sitting down with a friend,

I've always asserted that food, like life should be simple and honest. I'm certainly not comfortable around poncy food in general and all that goes with fine dining - extortion springs to mind mostly.

Anyway, when you come across a charming little eatery that appears to have everything that makes a place worth visiting, it makes for a very happy Polak indeed.

Such is The Golborne Deli, with its smallish but delicious sounding menu and for the area, a lot cheaper than its surrounding competitors. I rather like the small touches that indicate thought and care. Each table has a litre bottle of water, quality oil and vinegar, sea salt, chili oil and even a bottle of agave.

The brochette beckoned to me instantly. Toasted sourdough, bresaola, slivers of mozzarella, a dusting of pesto and some rocket, served with a substantial side salad and fresh lemon.

Lovely, simple, pretty as a picture and generous in size. My pal Zi had the lasagna, again, served with a side salad, and here I have to loudly applaud the perfection which this dish was cooked. Gorgeous meat, beautifully cooked pasta, just the right amount of bechamel clinging to it all, a truly enjoyable mouthful.

What does one need to produce this type of simple yet spot on grub? Care, attention to detail, presentation and flare actually.

A nice, unhurried atmosphere pervaded the deli and the staff were smiles and professionalism alike. A couple of drinks and the food came in at just under twenty quid. What an excellent find.

Golborne Deli is the kind of place I’d have appreciated in my hometown, back in the days when weekend pleasures were as simple as sitting down with a friend, having a coffee and a slice of cake, and enjoying endless catch-ups that stretched into the early evening. The other customers, comfortably sat at their tables with big mugs and small groups of friends, seemed perfectly attuned with my impression. Catchy pop music, played at a borderline acceptable volume, created the perfect soundtrack for a merry get-together, perhaps slightly less suitable to any customers in search of a quiet spot to spend a hard-earned stint of alone time.

Casting a glance around, I noticed the tell-tale signs of Christmas preparations. Shelves were lined with boxes of authentic Italian festive desserts, sporting the logos of brands that elicited a stream of childhood memories: stubborn struggles to remove all candied fruit from my slice of panettone, smears of icing sugar and pandoro crumbs on my kid’s face, rowdy family gatherings, utterly delectable flavours. More Italian products were on display, such as the evergreen Amaretti (of the large, soft kind, infinitely more gratifying than the small and crunchy), and cans of Italian-sourced sparkling drinks you won’t find at your local supermarket.

The menu included both hearty Mediterranean choices, such as paella and lasagne, and British breakfast dishes and sandwiches, all priced within London’s lunchtime standards. I chose a warming beef soup accompanied by wholegrain bread, while my partner had a toasted sandwich with ham and melted cheese; both of us were pleased with our picks.

As we savoured our late lunch, people started to come in for coffee and tea. I saw many generous slices of cake being delivered to other tables, together with steamy, oversized hot drinks. That, and the friendly, laid-back atmosphere, convinced me that Golborne Deli deserves a second visit at breakfast time. Truth be told, I’ve already attempted to go back on a Saturday morning, but there wasn’t a vacant seat in sight. I’m not surprised, and will most definitely try again.

Great neighborhood breakfast spot. Nice tables outside. Walk up and grab a spot. Have a variety of sandwiches, eggs, and toasts. Few pastries and quiches as well. Really great matcha latte - strong and not watery.

More like a wine place than a breakfast place. There is seating space outside but on a cold and windy day its no fun. This place is quite popular in the area. Breakfast plate was very small (smallest I have seen in my breakfast experience in London) and quite expensive for its worth. Coffee was fine but served in a plain white disposable cup which was a turn off. I am sure I wont go back again but no harm in exploring on a warm and sunny day.

Nicest place on Golborne road. Food was tasty and good portion and wine drank nicely. They have a diverse menu for breakfast and light lunch, and an extensive wine list. A good selection of soft drinks and cocktails are available too. The downside is it can be/get really busy and, under pressure, staff may not be friendly.

Top notch wine and deli. I spent a sublime rainy afternoon with a glass of wine cheese plant. Service was impeccable.

Really cute little cafe, deli and wine shop. This place gets quite busy on weekends. The food is delicious. But the ciabattas and the bagels are prepared fresh in their little kitchen. They also sell fruit and vegetables on one side of the shop and alcohol (wine and beers) on the shop next door. Super friendly staff. Highly recommended if you came for a nice break in between market stalls shopping on portobello road.

Excellent, simple breakfast deli food. I got the avocado toast with feta — normally I don’t like feta but this was so delicious! Reasonable prices too especially for London. I came her with a friend who is a regular, and it seems to be popular with locals, which is always a good sign :) There is indoor seating in the wine bar, which is cozy and smells great, and the deli itself has a cool retro look

Went here for breakfast and it was so nice! Such a lovely little place! Unique dishes on the menu if you ask me also a variety of veggie/vegan options to choose from which is always good. Dishes were well presented too.

It's our final day in London.....back to beautiful Devon later. But not before we take a stroll along a peaceful and majestic Regent's canal and turn left to Portobello Market. But first...some breakfast. This bistro and deli was just perfect. Two houses gelled into a wine store and a kitchen with fruit and veg and a takeaway come cafe. No room inside to sit but they've erected a heated eating area under cover on the side of the road. Not the smartest....... but very cosy inside and gives you the feeling of being on a Paris or Rome side street especially seeing it was a glorious morning even if it was only 12 °!! And wow, the food was perfect. Disappointing to have coffee in a plastic cup but it didn't really spoil the ambiance. The scrambled eggs were a glorious golden orangey yellow. The girls serving were not great nor the traditional London pathetic toilet situation wherever you go....great experience though....we will be back !!

Best place on Golborne Road. A lot of different food options and drinks. Staff is amazing, friendly and always smiling. The place is nice and cozy. Really crowded on the weekend but worth waiting for a table. After a nice meal you can walk down Portobello Road and enjoy the famous Portobello Market.

I’m a winemaker - I don’t export, but I do professionally Judge wine, and these guys really know what a good wine is. I’d trust them to pick me a wine every time, which says a lot as I never do that.
