Here’s a confession: I never cooked a roast, and find the thought quite daunting. It seems to be second nature for many of my British friends and colleagues; they tell me recipes are simple to follow, tease me for being silly, argue I should try. Maybe so; then again, some people claim making macarons is easy, too. To safeguard enjoyment, and avoid having a meltdown at the sight and smell of smoke coming out of my oven, I thought I’d better eat my first-ever Sunday Roast at the pub. Which one, though, and why?

Great food and very patient about late start. Last Saturday we thought that we should take in-laws to the Crooked Well, they live in Earls Court so a bit of a treck to Camberwell, traffic being what it is. They arrived late having parked close by and started walking in the wrong direction.
Point is they were 45min late. Staff at the restaurant took it in their stride and we played our part by having desert and coffee in the main seating area.

As to the food it was extremely good, well prepared and presented and even though the place was full, the courses arrived in a timely fashion.

A great addition to Camberwell.

Good pub grub in Camberwell. We wandered over to The Crooked Well a couple of Sundays ago as part of our old pal Esther's birthday celebrations and we had a very fine lunchtime feast indeed.

We had heard many good things about this latest addition to the ever growing Camberwell food offering and as we strolled down Grove Lane towards the pub the signs were auspicious; every outside table was full of happy punters chowing down on some very good looking food.

Entering The Crooked Well you have a nice chilled area on the left which is good for lounging, snacking and reading the papers with a more formal dining area on the right. I have visited this venue in many of its various formats over the past decade and the current owners have finally done the building proud, with a lovely relaxed but stylish interior combined with comfy furnishings.

After a quick drink at the bar, not a great deal of choice if cask ale is your thing but my Doom Bar had been well looked after and was the right temperature, we were shown to our handsome looking table for five. The menu is shortish and nicely balanced with a few classics and a couple of interesting dishes designed for sharing. The very stylish ladies at the table next to us were having the roast chicken which came as a dish for two; it looked divine with an aroma to match. Fortunately, before we got too carried away our very charming waiter informed us that the chicken was now finished for the day. No matter as there was plenty of good stuff left on offer.

I shared the rabbit and bacon pie with B which we matched up with a side order of greens and a few chips for good measure. Oh my lord it was a very, very tasty pie - succulent well flavoured meat, a rich gravy and a crispy puff pastry hat on top. This was a pie to savour and despite it being a big old portion we devoured every last mouthful with glee. Tory Boy had the roast beef which looked like it had been cooked to perfection and he declared himself well pleased with his selection. Esther and Carmen both had the fish and chips which also seemed to hit the spot.

The dessert menu looked so good that it was difficult to resist. Esther raved about the bitter chocolate tart which came with some lovely ripe figs and a scoop of vanilla ice cream while Carmen demolished a crème brûlée with shortbread at the other end of the table. I teamed up with Tory Boy for an assault on the cheese board; there was a great selection to choose from at £2 per cheese and I was very happy to spot the wonderful Plaisir au Chablis which made for a great end to the meal.

The wine list at The Crooked Well is well put together with plenty to choose from around the £20 mark. I like the idea that all of the wines are available as a small flask - gives you the opportunity to match up a few selections with your food without breaking the bank or ruining your liver.

Before we left I had a quick peak at the upstairs room which looked like it had lots of potential and would make a fine spot for a party or a private supper club. We are already looking forward to a return visit.

We were spoiled for choice with the menu, there were seven dishes to choose from for each course, and on top of that there were one special and two sharing main dishes, not to mention the homemade ice cream and selection of cheeses! The restaurant also does a ‘Cocktail of the Day’ from the bar, the one I had was bursting with fresh blackberries.

I’m trying to resist being too effusive, but it’s just really rather good here. Service is attentive and well-informed but laid back, warm bread is offered more than once, and the chips are bloody excellent.

My fish was gorgeous. Very delicate flavour with a nice crunch from the fried leeks and a kick from the capers and anchovies, which nearly overpowered but I enjoyed nonetheless.

I've talked before about the difficulty of the Restaurant of Death. That sad spot repeatedly filled with restaurateur after restaurateur desperately trying to work with a location that no one ever seems to go to. The Crooked Well is definitely in one of these, or rather has been. In recent incarnations it's been a Parisian cafe, a local pub and a trendy cocktail bar, and that's just the last two years.

Another week, another interesting new opening in Camberwell. I seem to have been spending a lot of my time around these parts lately, although admittedly most of that is down to the marvellous Silk Road and my insatiable desire for their home-style cabbage. If you've not made the effort to visit this unassuming little Xinjiangese and haven't yet sampled a healthy handful of cumin-spiced lamb kebabs or a big steaming bowl of belt chicken noodles or yes, that silky, stocky hand-torn cabbage, then you have a real treat in store. It's the kind of restaurant every spice-loving Londoner wants as their local, and I love it. But this post isn't about Silk Road, and the Crooked Well isn't an uncompromisingly authentic specialist in unpronounceable regional Chinese cuisine or a gritty East-African canteen with no cutlery , it's a strangely familiar, brand new and very smart gastropub. And if you've come to this area of town looking for interesting ethnic budget eats (and I can't think of any oth

The Crooked Well is posh Camberwell, located near Camberwell Grove. It's a really nice pub, good service and quite smart around the edges. If you're like me and you prefer something a bit scruffier, you'll probably find the Crooked Well too polished. Lovely benches outside to enjoy a drink in the sun and good cocktails too!

Of the many good independent pubs still thriving in Camberwell, the Well is among my favorite. Great selection of food, welcoming environment (LGBTQ+ friendly too) and good pints. I especially like coming here for Sunday brunch (and i ask my beef well done).

One of the standout qualities of this service was their excellent communication. They kept me well-informed every step of the way, ensuring I was always in the loop. Their transparency and willingness to address any questions or concerns I had made me feel valued and appreciated as a customer. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Summary: Big recommendation if you are tired of the standard pub food (often overpriced) but want to have the pub vibe and a pint! Lovely pub on a side street in Camberwell. It feels like a neighbourhood pub and is less busy than the few others in Camberwell. Also, I found the people a bit more "mature" (less student vibe, more parents with friends and babies). And now the best thing about it - the food is absolutely fantastic! They currently have a Nepalese menu with quite a few sharing platters. We tried out three different ones and were blown away by taste, quality and creativity. We had the chicken croquettes on mango, the lamb meatballs and the watermelon with whipped cream — all three were super delicious. We will come back and try out more dishes, esp. the desserts. All sounded fantastic!

A simple little street corner pub with a distinct kitchen restaurant feel to it. Just popped in for a drink, cold lagery and excellent on a hot day. Very pleasant staff and the place feels welcoming. A couple of cask ales are available for those that like. The kegs are not mainstream but mine at least, very tasty. An enjoyable pint!

Lovely place to both eat and drink. Went for new years eve. Nice ambience, not too loud. Staff friendly. The food was top quality, the chorizo scotch egg was delicious. Would definitely come back and eat here again.

We booked a private room for our wedding reception. We left the decorations with them a few hours before the booking and when we came back it looked amazing! The staff was so nice, we put our own music, feasted their DELICOUS vegetarian and vegan buffet and played charades with our family. Thank you everything!

Nice big pub. Inside is all stripped wood. Excellent, friendly service from bar crew. Good range of beers on offer. Food was from short, set price menu. I thought it very good, if a little expensive. Recommended.

Absolutely love this beautiful venue, such a lovely setting offering an impressive menu with tempting dishes and an amazing Sunday roast. The venue has a charming upstairs space, perfect for special occasions such as weddings and parties. They are soon to host popular Hartbeeps baby and toddler classes there also, which offer enormous interactive fun for parents and little ones, which will be a nice local treat. Love The Crooked Well, love Hartbeeps Camberwell( if I book quickly enough) so it's the best of both worlds for me!
