I guess I must have gotten a 50% discount - platter for two costs only £12.95 instead of£25.90! I think they were having some promotion back then. Chilli Cheese Fries. It is really godly for meat lovers - unfortunately I couldn't handle the amount of meat!! I should have just gotten the ribs instead of platter as it was really too much for just the both of us. Ribs were perfectly grilled and I love those burnt bits and it drops off from the bone!

Nice chilled out place, quick service and decent cocktails, but just a tad overpriced for the overall experience.

Bodean’s is a BBQ smokehouse specialising in American style BBQ of quality meats. The founder hailed from Kansas city Missouri and wanted to bring the best of his favourite cooking to London. BrewDog is a Scottish brewing company started by 2 young guys who wanted better beer and felt they could do a better job than the major breweries. Both companies have gone from strength to strength, with Bodean’s now operating 8 Smokehouses across London, and Brewdog managing to get a good foothold in the large retail supermarkets.

Bodeans was among my favourite restaurants when I was still based in London. Their friendly and fast service had not changed over the years. I introduced one of my friends to this place. I was surprised she has not been here before.

The place usually gets packed and reserving a table have to be done weeks in advanced. I've queued up here for more than an hour in the past. This time we came early to be sure we get a table at the restaurant downstairs.

To make ordering easy, we went for Bodeans platter. The platter included grilled chicken, spare ribs, baby back ribs, pulled pork, bbq burnt ends, two servings of chips and coleslaw. We requested corn on the cob instead of coleslaw and added extra onion rings.

Bodeans was able to maintain the standards of its dishes. The chicken was grilled to perfection, moist and oozing with sweet bbq flavours. Both spare ribs and baby back were also done well. Both were easy to remove from the bone and juicy. The pulled pork was nicely prepared as well - soft and tender. The burnt ends was ok. This is my all time favourite in this restaurant but this time I felt a little disappointed. It wasn't as tender as I had it in the past. It was a tad too hard. Perhaps it was a little overdone. It was still good but not the highlight I was expecting it to be. When having this much meat, the sides are equally important. The chips were good - crisp but chewy inside. It had a hint of flavour unique to Bodeans which I couldn't describe. The onion rings were lovely. It was lightly battered which allowed the sweetness of the onion to come through. The corn was very nice. It was soft, juicy and lightly sweet. Having these in between portions of the meat allowed us not to get tired of the meat taste. It was a wonderful meal.

Just like old times, I really enjoyed dining at Bodeans. The place kept its quality, level of service and reasonable pricing. I don't think you can easily find this much value for your money, especially in Central London.

My uncle and I were going around Covent Garden looking for some delicious food and found this awesome place. We walked in and the staff asked us politely if we had a reservation, unfortunately we didn't because we were out roaming in London, but fortunately it was only 12noon and they had spare tables around and they were able to assign us one.

We were carefully looking through the menu and finally ordered the Bodean's Platter which is good for 2 people. It had spare ribs, baby back ribs, chicken thighs, pulled pork, and burnt ends. It came with coleslaw and fries, but I ordered for the sweet potato fries. They had bottles of bbq sauce and hot sauce on the table ready to be used on your awesome bbq dish.

Ugh. I just loved what we ate last week. Hope to come back some time soon!

the meat is great here!! I love this place!! prices are really fair and staff is not just qualified but also polite and funny! ;) only downside would be the is almost impossible book a table and queuing something can be hassle.

I have heard many a tale of the establishment that is Bodean’s. People have raved about the meat, and I’ve read reviews of the meat, plus it kept popping up on my Twitter feed because of the… yep, the meat. Now, I am vegetarian for one month a year and egg curry is probably my favourite dish ever. But I am a carnivore at heart, so when a work lunch was scheduled to take place at Bodean’s BBQ, I salivated at the mere thought.

Still in a meat coma after making the mistake of going in hungry. You don't need a start AND a main course for lunch. Not if you want to be productive in the afternoon.

Went with the Buffalo wings with Diablo sauce to start. That could have been enough. Hearty portion. Good amount of heat. Crispy wings.

Pulled pork sandwich with chips which is a bargain at £7.90. Nice white bloomer bread. Pulled pork was really well done. I can't remember the chips. Best bit was gherkins on the side. As I don't want them near my meat.

Excellent value with a beer for under £20. I could have been easily under £15 if I hadn't been such a fatty

Came here for my brother's birthday and there were 11 of us. I was sharing the boss hog platter with a friend and the platter was hugh, a proper meat feast and literally polished it all off in no time. This is as American BBQ as it get in London and everyone were very satisfied. At the time of writing I have been back a few times, always busy and it never disappoints me.

Already been here twice with my boyfriend, we love it and every time we are in town we end up having dinner here.
The first time we sat upstairs and the last time we sat downstairs.
We love it, the service is great and the food is amazing.
A little expensive but it's worth it for the amount of food and the location!

Went there on Saturday evening and was put on the waiting list and was told it would take 45 mins but only took 10 mins to get a table. First thing I noticed is how small the place is and if there's 3 of you then one of the guys will be sitting opposite someone else which isn't nice and if you order more than a burger say a platter then you struggle for space on the table.
Ordered the 16oz burger with all the trimmings - good burger and got it will sweet potato fries with is a fav of mine and again very nice. Good sauce selection and liked the hot BBQ sauce which became addictive.
Also shared the big hoss platter between 3 people and it had a nice selection of pulled pork, baby back ribs, normal ribs, burned ends, chicken thighs, fries and coleslaw. The chicken thighs were a little bland and normal ribs were very fatty. Also got onion rings as a side which a little ordinary.
Big drinks selection from cocktails to good selections of beers.
One thing to point out is the service which was excellent, very friendly and very helpful in choosing our meals.
Overall, nice quick bite which a good selection of American style BBQ, platter is very expensive at £40 which I would recommend getting a few sides but the place is very small and very tight, specially when you're eating a big feast.

After a bad experience at Tower Hill Bodeans, which involved cold food and a waitress dropping a knife into my leg and laughing, I received a voucher and decided to use it at Soho.

To save waiting 20 minutes, we decided to sit upstairs in the Bodeans deli bar.
It was by far, a more enjoyable and pleasant evening. There was one minor hiccup with the wrong food being served but it was resolved quickly.

We ordered a pulled pork sandwich, which was a bit dry but tasty. My partner had the pulled pork and burnt ends, which needed a lot of sauce as the pork was a bit dry.
The sweet potato fries were really good. The crispy coasting encased a soft middle but it's best to eat them whilst hot.
The cornbread muffins (one portion has 2) were quite big and came with a little tub of butter. The flavour was good but I found them a little dry also.

The portions overall were big and I ended up having to take some of my meal home!

Busy but nice.. I like the atmosphere of the place but I have to be in the mood for it. It's casual, you can just rock up in whatever and eat with pals. Great food (one of a kind pulled pork! Nothing matches it, seriously.) and great drinks. Always busy whenever I've been, so again have to be in the mood.

Only OK. The place was rammed with an hour wait for the downstairs restaurant and a 30 minute wait for the upstairs shared seating. We sat upstairs. High points: the BBQ beans, the slaw and the fries. The pulled pork was also nice and juicy. The ribs and chicken wings were rather dry, the ribs in particular being quite hard work. If you've ever been to Florida the 4Rivers does it way better and way, way cheaper.

Bodeans - forget pitt cue & co. After disaster trying to get bbq at Pitt cue, last Saturday, we returned to Bodeans, the old faithful. Got a massive amount of food from the take away fridge - took home and enjoyed thoroughly. Great service from Herbert. Thanks!

As for eating in the bar area, it was easy and made a great start to our evening.

Guilty Pleasures - Bodeans BBQ. Don't get my wrong, I love fine dining (see Maze review if you need any proof), but there comes a time when the call of smokey hickory or chipotle sauce just gets too strong to resist. At those moments, unless I have a handy return ticket to New Orleans in my possession, I head to a branch of Bodeans.

Bodeans BBQ offers delights that were first introduced to me as an 11 year old girl on a family holiday / tour of the US. I don't think I've ever lost the joy of sitting in a booth rather than at a table, eating with my hands, or wiping a rib-inflicted smile of sauce that reaches my ears off my face with a lemon-scented cloth.

I now drink beer with my ribs rather than gallons of coke, but not much else has changed.

A few years back in New York I then discovered pulled pork. On that occasion the mountain of meat put in front of me was terrifying, but the taste was godly. Bodeans do an range excellent combos which indulges my, and many a diner's, indecision - you can have chicken, ribs and pork all on one plate. Alternatively, if you're on a mid-week budget, take advantage of the 'Pig Out for a Tenner' package - 1/2 a chicken, a full rack of baby back ribs, or a rack of beef ribs (all served with masses of chips and coleslaw) and a soft drink, glass of wine or beer, for err, a tenner.

Only one comment, maybe avoid the beef ribs. They are indeed huge and meaty, but not nearly as tender as the baby back ribs.

There's not much more I can wax lyrical about here. It's a simple, if a little guilty, pleasure. But if you like bbq sauce, give it a go.

Food: 8/10 (for what it is!)
Value for Money: 9/10
Service: 7.5/10

Would I go again? Oh yes

A hyper Americanised style BBQ diner, Bodeans should be the destination for any rampant carnivore. A hectic hubub of meaty activity, the food is simple – barbecued meats – ribs, pulled pork, burnt ends, chicken wings and whatever else. Sides are predictable and necessary to relieve the protein overload – chips, coleslaw, creamed corn, onion rings… it is basically a song to the rampant obesity issues of America.

How was it? Erm, let's just say I probably won't order it again. I'm sure it's famous for a reason, and maybe this version wasn't the best I could have had, but to me, this was dry, stringy (which is understandable considering it's pulled) and had the tendency of getting stuck in my teeth quite a lot.

Not as good as it used to be but still great for quashing that meat-fest that you find yourself needing after intense sleep deprivation or simply because it’s Friday lunchtime and that’s a good enough excuse to literally pig out. The combos are immense and are guaranteed to have you asleep by mid-afternoon. I stick with the ligher (well, relatively speaking) hot deli sandwiches like the Soho Special of pulled pork and burnt ends that comes with fries and coleslaw. Nothing better than opening that in the office and seeing everyone turn and drool.

I hate shopping. I really do, especially when it involves shopping for clothes. I hate having to buy new clothes, especially when the clothes I want are way out of my price range. Damn those Italian shoes. Then again, wasn't that why credit cards were invented? I need energy to go shopping. The thing I love is once you hit Stoke Newington High Street and then onto Kingsland Road, is the amount of small bakeries that sell salt beef. It's glorious. Bodean's BBQ in Soho, is legendary amongst South Africans, Zimbabweans and Kiwi's, when you first arrive in the UK and are craving some good meat!  As such, one evening a huge table of us went to try this American-style restaurant and were not disappointed! Bodean's is one of my favorite BBQ places in London, maybe because everytime I come back from work I walk by and the smell of BBQ pork tempts me.
However some of the staff are really rude and there's always too many people, the waiting time might be too long.
Instead of the classic restaurant downstairs try out the ground floor with the "self service" BBQ.

Bodean should not be dismissed easily as a just a franchise in hope of exploiting the jewel that is American grill cuisine. It is tasty, plentiful, generous and most importantly, honest. Compared to other casual diner that serves grilled food ie Nandos, Bodean I reckon is more down to earth but with a hint of modernity that is suitably classy within Soho. 

We were seated quickly despite being quite busy that night. Bodean Soho has tight seating arrangements but don't make you feel too uncomfortable. The service was fast and friendly. Best of all was the various types of grilled meat to choose from that span from buffalo chicken wings, burgers, spare ribs and all the way to a Turkey BLT. We had a Boss hog platter with a couple of slides. All the meat was cooked nicely with plenty of flavour. The pulled pork and burnt ends especially stood out with the smokey flavour and easily meat that pulled off from the bone. I was a bit disappointed with the ribs because they were a bit smaller than imagined and didnt really had enough heat nor flavour one would expect from a rib place. Also i thought baby rib were a bit colder than should be. The sides of coleslaw, chips and corn bread were amazing. 

Bodean is a must try especially for social and family outings. The food is honest and doesn't pretend to be anything else.

Stumbled across this place on a rainy Sunday expecting it to be quiet... It was packed! We were given the option of the diner or the main restaurant and we went for the diner option. This has a more limited menu, but all the that you would want. The food is southern BBQ American ribs,burgers,chicken,chips and milkshakes. One downside is you do have to order at the counter, but it's hardly difficult and we are all used to doing it at Nandos!

The staff were friendly and efficient. Food came very quickly considering how busy, and they call out your receipt number and you put your hand up to claim your food.

I had the pulled pork burger with chips and chocolate milkshake and my bf had the ribs,chicken and pulled pork combo with chips and salad and strawberry milkshake.
Mine was yummy, the pulled pork was very meaty maybe a bit too meaty for me but good and the chips having this really great seasoning that makes them stand out from other chips. Best I've had in a while. My bf ate all of his and was really impressed and ate everything.

For me the hilight was the milkshake,I often don't like to have that with a meal as it doesn't wash food down but this one was AMAZING! Every taste was just as good as the first and even though we were stuffed when we left we still were tempted by a second lol.

Would definitely recommend and am tempted to try the restaurant next time!

Great diner food, ribs, burgers, pulled pork and fries were great. The milkshakes were especially amazing. The chips have a really nice seasoning. Only downside it's very busy and be prepared to sit very close to other diners.

We visited this Restaurant on a Saturday night with a mindset that we would have to wait for at least 1.5 hours. But Luckily our table was ready within 30 minutes. We had the sharing platter with burnt ends of pulled pork along with the side order which was reasonable priced. The meal was lovely.

This is a must go for the all the people who love barbeque dishes. The food is delicious and cooked with an edge. dishes are slightly burnt on the edges, giving it a unique touch. We ordered a platter and it was delighting and satiating. The overall atmosphere was really enjoyable!

The steak that I received was extremely tender, flavourful and very juicy. The sauce and other side dishes did not disappoint either and compliment the main dish. Everyone enjoyed their meal thoroughly and was satisfied by the end of it. The wines were also in complete harmony with the dishes. Highly recommended for at least one visit.

I had come to this place once before on a business meeting, and I had liked my experience so I decided to revisit. This visit did not disappoint me either. We came here on a full weekend night, but we were quickly given a table on the lower level. We settled on ordering the Boss Hog platter and the grilled chicken served with chips were as much enjoyed by us as by our three-year old son.

This is a nice little restaurant in town and is usually quite crowded so I had to wait for quite some time before I got a table. The food was amazing, the ribs were the best I've ever had. The portions are huge too, and too much for one person really. Lovely place, would be back soon.

To begin with, the restaurant is always busy and wait for a table is expected. The good thing is, wait will definitely be worth it. We ordered Ribs, which were incredible, by far the most delicious ribs i have had anywhere. On another upside, the portion sizes are generously HUGE!

If you are a meat lover, then this is the place for you to be at. The pulled pork ribs are amazing, delicious and perfect, as are their buffalo wings. All the meat is genuine, succulent and flavoursome, and the sauces that come along with the meat only serve to elevate its taste.

This is the second time I am reviewing this place and I loved it yet again! The food here is very sumptuous and tastes great! The Portions are very generous and full of amazing taste, absolutely delightful! The ambiance here is absolutely terrific and amazing. The staff is quick, efficient and very attentive. We took a take away from this restaurant a couple of days before, and our order hardly took 10 minutes to get ready. We were really impressed by the quickness of their staff and headed home to enjoy our meal. We had some BBQ chicken which was amazing, and all the other dishes were prepared brilliantly.

It is a really good place to take your friends to for a really small yet fast meal. It is your typical relaxed and casual American style restaurant. This place specializes in barbecue meat especially pork. So if you are a vegetarian ordering Caesar salad or a vegetable sandwich, this is not a good place for you. The menu gives you an extensive selection for barbecue items. I would definitely recommend this place to every non-vegetarian living in this city!

This place serves delectable American cuisine. The food is extremely delicious and appetizing and the portions are massive. The Buffalo wings are a must-have here. The shakes are also incredibly creamy and delicious. This place will surely suffice your hunger. In all, a great experience. Would definitely recommend it and will surely be back.

The place is all for our carnivorous fellows. From a Pig shaped doorknob it is a clear giveaway who they are inclined to serve. The place has two sections, a formal restaurant area downstairs and a casual decor bar upstairs. We grabbed a drink and ran through the takeaway menu which has a lot to offer.

The place has a unique cooking technique which makes it all the more enticing and unique for an experience. They cook their food on low flame and with slow smoke supply. The approach allows all the flavors to rise and bring about a supreme dish. This place and delicacies they offer is a treat!

The restaurant is a treat for people who love their meat and their sports. It is during big tournaments that you shall find it very difficult to be seated here. The meat is good, not great. The service is decent. Come here when you have a lot of time on your hand.

This place is very popular and there fore the place is always jam packed, this means that getting a seat here is difficult. The ambiance here is pretty great and relaxed but has a tendency to escalate if you are in the mood for it.
The menu has the most amazing selection of drinks and food.I definitely recommend trying the best ever pulled pork! Love it!

I decided to visit this place recently. I had great expectations and it didn't disappoint me either. Its quite good for a meat-loving person. They also provide food in large quantities. I must also mention that this place offers deliciously succulent meat. I had a good time there. Definitely worth a visit.

The quantity they provide is so good and at this price that you start wondering that how is this even possible.
There is a game night and at that time you really would love to get a seat downstairs , It is perfect.

The place offers delectable barbecue dishes and it is probably one of the best barbecue places in town. The ribs and the pulled pork are a must-try here. The Clam Chowder is next to perfect and one of the best I've ever had. The staff is not that hospitable and that aspect of service could be improved.

I happen to be of British nationality and wanted to get a taste of an authentic British dinner. This was the best option that I could have chosen. The food was an absolute delight and the staff was very pleasant. They made sure that we had the best time ever. I am so impressed with this place that I will definitely be returning here with more people.

Last year my friend told me about this place. Since that day I have been going to this place whenever I'm in town.
If you are thinking about the ambience , they will provide you the best one.
If you are thinking about the service , you won't have any regret after coming out.
If you are thinking about the quality of food then try their chicken wings with blue cheese dip , they are the best.
Overall this place is marvelous and everyone should try it and I assure you this is going to be your favourite spot.

I have been to this restaurant a number of times. It offers very good food at fairly reasonable prices. If you go in a group of two or three, then I would recommend you people to try their Boss Hog Platter. The staff is good and the service is also up to the mark. Definitely worth a visit.

Really good value for money, this small chain of family friendly American style BBQ restaurants knows its meat!

Always busy, Bodean's is a wonderfully informal deli/ restaurant with an exquisite selection of slow-cooked meat. More often than not, there is a long wait for the restaurant (sometimes up to an hour and a half), but you can amuse yourself in the deli/ bar area where the food choice is somewhat more limited, but no less tasty. 

It's hard to comment on the service because I've never made it into the restaurant and you order the food yourself in the bar, but when the staff bring over your steaming plate of pulled pork, sausages, and ribs, they do so with a smile.

Overall, Bodean's are really great at what they do and are worth a tour.

I never ever had that much meat in my life as I had here.
We had a table booked for a birthday party for 10-12 people and we were supposed to order from the set menu but we eventually mange to negotiate with the super friendly waitress and we ordered whatever we wanted from the menu. Hence, me and my greedy friend decided to go for the Boss hog platter for 2 which included some spare ribs, burnt ends, pulled pork, 2 sausages and chicken thighs. I know, it sounds like it's enough for a whole army. To be honest I had less then half and I thought I'll explode. The remaining food I asked to have it take away from which I had a nice dinner with my boyfriend the next day.
Meat lovers that's the place for you and I highly recommend it.

Don't order a large unless  you mean it.  Pigging out is brought to another level when you have a pulled pork sandwich here. 

It's a real meat feast. Great for their barbecued meat and BBQ sauce. Their sharing platter for 2 can feed 4 normal appetites (especially with a few sides).

Tip: Register for one of their Q cards to get a different deal 7 days a week - they've got some pretty good ones, from a free drink to money off your entire bill .

Really good American Food!

I was excited by the range of ribs and burgers, and was slightly conflicted as to what I wanted.  In the end I went for the babyback ribs with bbq sauce and was not disappointed.  The meal was appropriately sized and delicious.  And the price range is more than appropriate. 

The location is good and there is plenty of room inside.  I will come right back the next time I crave some ribs!!

I dropped by Bodean's a couple of weeks back, having heard nothing but AMAZING reviews from friends i was pretty excited (and famished!)

My partner and I entered without a booking and got sat down in the main diner area. Good surroundings if you're with a group of friends and just dropping by for a quick bite. Must admit, despite a good atmosphere it didn't work for us. Perching on stools with less than 1ft of area to enjoy food felt a bit cramped!

Going over to book for the downstairs area was a better decision! having waited not at all long (it's great that Bodean's have adopted the digital queue btw!) we went downstairs into a BBQ steak house plucked straight from the Texan plains! Amazing atmosphere and genuine decor rather than a cliche' of the south!

We enjoyed a behemoth platter to share and it was some of the most amazing southern BBQ i've ever had (i know, quite  a claim!) Not greasy, succulent with lots of cuts and meat choice... and SUPER tasty!

Be patient enough to go downstairs to the restaurant and if you're ok with slightly snug surroundings, you won't be disappointed with Bodean's cornucopia of amazing southern fair!

Went to Bodean's last night. The place is a carnivore's delight. The portions served here are huge and the meat is succulent. However, we were tad disappointed with our starter - Carolina Prawns as it didn't live up to our expectation. For the main course, we ordered a plate of Chicken Buffalo Burger and a combo of 1/2 chicken, pulled pork and grilled smoked sausages. The burger was exquisite and so was our combo. The portion served as part of combo was massive and it was rather difficult for a single person to finish off. Their mocktails are good, though I found Hawaiian Punch to be a little sweeter than usual. 
All in all a good place to dine despite the waiting time (it took us almost 45 minutes to get in despite reaching there at 18:45)

Having previously received positive feedback from friends about Bodeans, I was eager to give this renowned restaurant a try.

I went to the Soho branch with one of my close friends, late on a Wednesday evening. It was quite busy for a week day and not knowing we had to pre book we had an hour wait for a table to dine downstairs. This wait was eased by the friendly staff and the happy hour cocktails. We ordered a few Caiprihina's (my favourite cocktail at the moment lol) and got the night started with a strong kick.

When we eventually got into the restaurant, we ordered half a slab of spare ribs which were accompanied by coleslaw and fries. The menu and scenery is very Americanised, setting the scene of a downtown diner. The seating is quite close knit, where i could almost hear the conversations of those beside us. The meal in itself arrived swiftly and I was very much satisfied with the amount of food I received for the price I paid. It was very good value for money and I would definitely pay Bodeans a visit again. Only thing i would recommend is a pre booking of a table if you are weary of waiting times but you are definitely in for a good meal that is value for money!

A proper bad boy, smoky, meaty delight of a meal. Go for a full hog platter so you can sample everything they have to offer. The burnt ends and ribs are particularly scrummy. Share between 2 and you'll still have enough left for a doggy bag to take home, once the meat sweats get too much to bear.
My one bug bear, which I refuse to accept as normal despite having lived in London for 3 years, is how ridiculously hard it is to get a table. At least they operate a call back system but going on a weeknight to be told it'll be 2 - 3 hour wait destroys my soul a little and occasionally sees us reverting to Byron for a quick fix.
Nevertheless when you do get in, its worth it do just a question of how strong your patience & willpower is.

Holy moly.. How have I been in London nearly a year and not heard about this place?!
I went here last night with a couple of girls and sat outside. Ordered a bottle of wine and the pulled pork and burnt ends and was over the moon when a TRAY of fries,
coleslaw, brisket and pulled pork came my way. The pork was not fatty at all and so tender, as was the brisket. Chips were perfect and the coleslaw was creamy and crunchy - I'm seriously considering going back tonight.
Absolutely unbelievable BBQ sauce too.. Gutted I didn't take a picture as my first thought was to just shove it in my mouth haha.
Surprisingly didn't have to wait either as we chose to sit outside under the heaters .. Waitress thought we were mad but it was actually very warm!

This place is always packed but I understand why I love the ribs yumyyy. Staff is very friendly. I prefer eating downstairs but sometimes there is a bit of a queue as you can't reserve in advance. Oh and portions are huge so make sure you are hungry ;) Really good quality food, good value for money you get a large portion for what you pay. I haven't yet ordered one wrong meal there and thats statement . My fav dishes are the Ribs and the Chicken Wings just writing about it makes me feel like going back there mouthwatering food

New Year, new me. New Year, same clichés. I’ve joined a gym. There’s another one. Yesterday, I had my first date with the ‘sit down and pull the handle things’ machine, the ‘lie on me and lift your legs up device’ and a rather splendid swimming pool with a bouncy floor. My membership includes discounted booze and food so I’m all set for a winter of exercise, my way.

What I am trying to say, inarticulately, is that the week commencing 6th January 2014 was the swan song to a 2013 of quantum foodage, but at least if I manage a few sessions and work on the gins guns, I can continue to get out and about London, and beyond, to eat vicariously. In the words of Dragonette, “Cause this city can’t live without me”

It also seems that in the last couple of years, London cannot live without Burger & Lobster, a fad which, through my preoccupation with other places, has passed me by, though what is not to like about those two words? So one night last week, as my swan song continued to permeate a grey and thoroughly depressing version of the city I love, we decided to get on the fad and go.

They were all shut.

Ah, OK, plan B. Sarah, more known to me for her Northernness than ability to sniff out a good place to eat, astounded me with the suggestion to head to Bodean’s, just as we were about to call it quits in a sinister part of Soho, as the rain fell again.

Bodean’s has a lot in common with Burger & Lobster. They’re both what I would call hipster mini-chains (though Bodean’s uses the term ‘diner deli’), a chain restaurant for people who would either a) wear a checked shirt or b) not mind queuing a bit for relatively unassuming but decent food. Both operate five restaurants in London; Bodean’s fifth is coming soon, to Balham. Both their websites annoy me- Burger & Lobster’s is one of those unnavigable art house craphouses that exists simply to tell people that there might be restaurants out and about that possibly serve burger and/or lobster, but why don’t you turn up, queue and find out for yourself? Bodean’s website looks like it was constructed by a five year old, on one of those old GeoCities platforms I remember from when I was marvelling at the internet on the school computers. In 1997.

Anyway, who am I to judge websites? And if I vetoed restaurants based on their web design, I wouldn’t need to join a gym as I’d never go out. I spared Sarah all this randomness and we headed in to the Bodean’s on Poland Street in Soho. It’s laid out ‘deli up, dinner down’, and we headed through the open-planned upper level and down to the restaurant. It was full - putting the ‘queue’ in BBQ - but having been quoted a wait time of twenty minutes and registered on a cool app/text/net thing that alerts you when your table is free, and what number you are in line, we headed off to a Starbucks next door to wait. Soon the app thing binged ‘1’ (1st in line) and back we went! Ah, technology for the sake of technology.

The restaurant is what you might expect a barbecue restaurant to look like. And smell like. They had me at the first whiff of pig. It’s all tight tables, mustard in yellow squeezy things, ketchup red ones and two barbecue sauces in browns ones, one hot, one apple. You’re sat on brown, looking at brown, with a few Olde Worlde trinkets and plates on the walls, like a diet TGI Fridays (not my favourite place at the moment after an awkward evening at the Wembley one a while back).

Unlike the menu at Burger & Lobster, the food offering here is massive. We were only dropping in really, and stayed way from an equally large and well-appointed cocktail menu, though I made the (in hindsight) catastrophic mistake of ordering a double-chocolate milkshake. The menu is brilliant because you have to search damn hard to find anything veggie or healthy. The best I found was a veggie quesadilla or a non-chicken Caesar Salad. Everything else is fresh from the ‘oak burning smoke pit’ - for all we know that’s a burning bin with a grid over it, out back - but it’s a sheet of paper killing me softly with burgers, dogs, brisket, pulled pork and ribs, dangerous repetition of the words ‘BBQ’, ‘jerk’, ‘smoked’, ‘grilled’ and the phrase “served with fries”.

Predictably, the wealth of choice and rumbly tummies got the better of us and we went for a sharing ‘pig platter’. When it arrived, with fires and coleslaw, we knew we were beaten before we even started. The plate was heaped with with the most tender brisket, sliceable beef and pork ribs, grilled chicken that actually wanted to vacate the bone, sausages, all lying on a cushion of pulled pork. It was exactly what it should be, dirty, voluminous and damn tasty, because face it, NO ONE apart from Nick Clegg could stuff up barbecue. But there was so much.

We grazed, caught up and dug deeper into the pile of meat, both of us admitting defeat as we started to see the first glimpses of china peeking out from the gradually cooling flecks of pulled pork and the most perfectly sharp coleslaw. We were offered a doggy bag by the waitress, who was seemingly familiar with people whose eyes were bigger than their stomachs wasting good grilled grub in here… but we’re polite and said no. And would you believe it, we had to skip dessert.

Much like Wayne Rooney’s fling with Jennifer Thompson, eating at Bodean’s is a quick and cheap affair. The meal is swooshed along by friendly but no-nonsense staff (we were scolded by the hostess when we arrived, as we were fifteen minutes late for our booking “You know, I was about to give your table away…”). And suddenly, it was over, and we were back out on the street.

We’d barely spent twenty-five quid each, and no-one can argue with that. Poland Street on a rainy Monday night was empty, with a capital E, and it felt strangely similar to the basement of Bodean’s. Sure, the place did great food and tidy little milkshakes, but there seemed no fuss, no excitement, no soul - and let’s face it, barbecue is as close as you can get to Soul Food, without it being Soul Food.

Nevertheless, it was good - and I didn't think of Burger & Lobster once. I’d go back - but with a party (no offense Sarah!) - Bodean’s is definitely a place to share en masse, where you and your buddies can sit and share, laugh and libate and join together in good honest food, and fight each other over the last morsel of rib or whatever. Oh, scratch the last one, because here, the food will always conquer. And my gym will save the day.

I went to the restaurant with a friend on a Sunday evening.
The place was busy but they sat as straight away. The service was very good and the staff very friendly.
We sat upstairs which was the sports bar part of the restaurant, so it was kind of noisy, but not a problem. Downstairs is more restaurant like.
You had to go up to order and they gave you a number which they would shout out when your food was ready and bring it over to you. Service was very quick - 10-15mins.
I had the half slab spare ribs. They were delicious; had a few sauces on the table that went with it perfectly. The only problem was the ribs were really fatty, which I personally don't like at all. That stopped the restaurant getting a higher rating.
The chips and coleslaw were really good.
The portion size was really good.
When we arrived they said the wait would be 45mins, but then turned around 2mins later to say a table was ready.
I would definitely go back again.

I heard so many good things about Bodean's, and so I was rather disappointed by my experience. The school dinner service style was strange but it works, the waiting staff were ambivalent and the pulled pork really did not live up to y expectations! I think I heard too many good things about it and I was expecting something a little more mindblowing!

There are plenty of first-come-first-serve places in Soho, and the queues that form are telling. Even in the rain, lengthy queues will form outside Bone Daddies ramen bar, whilst at Bodeans the weather very much defines the amount of people willing to wait. Put it down to the atmosphere though, and not the food.

Bodeans know their food, and put other American BBQ joints to shame. The Soho Special - a bun overflowing with pulled pork and burnt ends - is a lunchtime winner, but my all-time favourite meal here was a happy pre-theatre feast of their hearty gumbo side and the incredible Jacob's Ladder ribs. The drinks are as all-American as the food. The beers are popular, but the soft drinks are wonderful. The ginger beers are a go-to for the complete experience.

Upstairs is bright and cheerful, and the service can be incredibly fast. It's not rare to spot a celebrity chowing down on a pile of meat by one of the windows. Downstairs is a different story - dim and a little dingy, with a table service that varies much more than the upstairs team's. It isn't necessarily a bad experience, and the food can benefit from the more relaxed pacing, but it isn't worth the 45 minute waits that sometimes occur. Note also that the upstairs and downstairs teams are awful at communicating between one another, and you'll be lucky if they give you matching estimations of waiting times. If upstairs tells you there is a wait below, always head down and check for yourself.

Is my favourite american dinner place in London, it's an amazing place, where you can eat the best pulled pork in London.
I would definitely recommend the upstairs space because is more cozy and even if it self service feel yourself free to eat with you hands and leave forks and knives on the table!
Although once one of the waiters has been really rude with us, but i'm sure that it was just an occasion.

If you're prepared to loosen your belt a notch or two after a meal out, Bodean's is the place to go. Walk into this all-American rib joint and you'll see large plasma screens surrounding you screening basketball and other sports, people crowded on to various tables looking on, there's a real buzz about the place. The downstairs is average, request a table on the ground floor for a better atmosphere. Get a selection of different dishes to share to maximise your eating experience - the chicken wings and coleslaw were fantastic, the ribs were somewhat lacking, the selection of American beers was excellent. Definitely worth a visit.

Bodeans is a BBQ place that used to be one of my favourite places to go as a carnivore. Now there are better places to go for this type of thing, like Pitt Cue Co, not too far away.
It's split up between 2 levels the dining area downstairs, and more of a diner upstairs. Last time I went there the ribs were not that succulent and very dry with the BBQ sauce just being quite chemically. They do quite a lot of covers and I think the quality suffers in this respect, too much quantity over quality. A shame as I've had some enjoyable meals here with friends in the past. Sharing a Bodean's platter is a great experience to see that mountain of food come out.
Nowadays I'll stick to pitt cue where the quality is much better.

Bodeans is necessarily an American BBQ place and boy are their portions American style! The branch in Soho has two levels, the upper level has benches and an open kitchen much like what you would find in the US and the lower level is more of proper dining with some booth style seating. One look at the menu and you'll be spoiled for choice. They have everything from BBQ meat to burgers to hot dogs and even burnt ends. If you're at a BBQ joint then might as well go for BBQ right? Yes! We ordered ½ BBQ chicken along with Jamaican Jerk Breast grilled chicken. The BBQ chicken comes with slaw and fries(thick cut fries) and the grilled chicken came with fragrant rice and roasted veggies. We also ordered Onion rings since it is the much appreciated starter in all diners everywhere. Firstly, the portions were huge. We couldn't finish what was on our plate and the poor onion rings just sat still. However i must add that the rings were a bit soggy to begin with and not really the crunchy rings one would like. The BBQ chicken had an amazing crusty burnt BBQ-ish taste while the meat inside was tender and white. The grilled chicken came in strips and was quite nice once you dipped it in mayonnaise and had it with rice. I was disappointed with the veggies since they seemed a bit overcooked and lacked flavour. The fries had chilli salt sprinkled over them which made them a good bite. All in all, if you are hungry for some meat- Bodeans is the place! But was it value for money? Not so much.

The food was better than NYC bbq food places. The burnt ends were absolutely amazing. There was not 1 piece of fat on any of the meat that we had. The atmosphere was fantastic. The music was on but not too loud , so you couldn't have a conversation and not be heard. The staff were all amazing. checking to see if we needed anything but not to often so we could enjoy our food. We will definitely be visiting again.

Only giving 4 for the atmosphere due to the air conditioning downstairs being freezing, right above us and making the food chilly. A good chain BBQ smokehouse restaurant in Soho. As with most properties in this area they are small and often have a downstairs seating area. The food was great, expertly cooked and had the best seasoning and smoked flavour to all of the meats.

The restaurant's close station service was ok although I would have preferred my drink to come quicker as I was very dehydrated as I explained to the waiter also I would have preferred starters separately as everything came together which was quite daunting and had to put kitchen roll and sauce on floor next to us also there was no Aircon as broke above this though they has amazing food such as brisket beef cooked to perfection but you have to order 72hours before hot dogs loaded or not burger beef or chicken loaded or not steak wow wings delicious Mac and cheese corn on cob salads

Had a really fun time here, was pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon but we got a table for two straight away. I went for a platter of burnt ends, pulled pork and texas sausage. Plus a side of cornbread. The sauces were delicious. The service wasn't all that friendly but it was efficient. The food is the main event, delicious and not pricey. Great stuff.

It’s been a very long time since I had a Bodean’s (they catered my wedding over a decade ago…) and it was cute being back in the Soho branch. Service was fast and friendly. Portions were generous. Lots of vegan and veggie options too. The cornbread and amaretto sours were the stand-outs for me.

I had the pulled pork burger, burnt ends, and brisket. They were all very good. I would recommend the Soho special sandwhich which is a blend of pulled pork and burnt ends. The staff were amazingly kind and lovely 10/10 service.

Great food, sauces and all reasonably priced. The meat was perfectly cooked, tender and tasty. The waiters took a while to take our order, then it took 40mins for the food to arrive, but they made up for this by taking 30% off our bill and gave us two free beers. Happy days!

Bodean’s still remains one of my favourite places to eat in London. I’ve been coming to Bodean’s for over 15 years. The vibe and standards haven’t changed. It’s the first time I’ve taken my boys. The staff were friendly and was joking around with my youngest, he order is apple juice and said it was “nice and fresh”… that’s his judgement face, checking if it’s to his standards. Always love the food at Bodeans. The shrimp and hot wings were great! We were really looking forward to the Truffle Mac n Cheese however it was sadly a let down. Needed more flavour and had little or no salt.

The food and the service never disappoint! I always eat there when in London! Though it is a shame that the Clapham branch has shut down. What happened?! Bodeans should open outside London, like Manchester we need you here! Also need precooked spare ribs packs to take away and it needs to be back on the menu on the same level as the baby back ribs!!!! Can't wait to come back 😋

Not really sure what to expect. Sometimes meat, especially beef products can be tough if not prepared correctly. Needn't have worried, everything on the Pit Boss Platter was superb. Loved the brisket. Key lime pie and ice cream to finish. Marvelous stuff!

Was good to come back after so many years. I have never tried their Bodean’s blue cheese salad , it was quite nice to be honest. Very attentive staff, very welcoming, they manage to arrange a table for 5 in no time . I highly recommend them if you are in the area, they have a good selection of food and drinks both alcohol and non alcohol. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians too .

Don't be fooled by the appearance of this establishment. Might look unimpressive, but food and staff make up for it. Lovely very friendly server. Service fast and portions on the "can't eat any more" side. Well worth a visit

The menu may have been slimmed a bit but the portions certainly haven’t - still the same delicious ribs and burnt ends as before. Great for a cheeky dinner in Soho. Honestly you can share a rack of ribs easily here and still be full up after. They do deals on pitchers of lager, and show sports on the TVs. It’s a welcoming atmosphere and right in the middle of the liveliest area of London.

Booked a table online- restaurant is in a great location walking distance from theatres and tube. We put in the notes we were off to the theatre. We had a lovely welcome. We ordered the platter for two and a Mac n cheese. It was really tasty and the platter had a good selection of everything they do but the ribs were amazing.. Good for families with smaller portions hot dogs hamburgers etc. we were eating early and it soon filled up and got busy so I would recommend booking a table. Staff were friendly we were well looked after and toilets clean. Great find online really enjoyed our meal even though we were beaten by the platter couldn’t finish it all! When up in London again will definitely look these guys up.
