Very good place with a very good ambience, optimal hygienic conditions and fresh food items and drinks . The prices are reasonable, the service is prompt and punctual and the staff is highly professional and friendly.
This place is more about the experience and th ambience , the peace, the interiors, I enjoyed my late afternoon coffee here with a book, the underground cafe, is truly and experience to have, if you ever visit the national art gallery, you should definitely check this place out.
I love this place, the structure is amazing, you eat in a Real crypt ( deads are not here anymore under your feet) . Food is fresh, nice soups, sandwiches, salads and some hot main courses. Nice fair prices, clean toilets nearby.
Talk about a mismatched yet an oh-so-amazing structure! The ambience surely added taste to our grub here at the Crypt. While the soup and the mains were delicious, the apple crumble was the most memorable. Definitely going back!

I would "die" to get a chance to eat in the crypts! haha Of course, I was excited at the same time intrigued to dine at this place. It is located in the stunning 18th century crypt of St Martin-in-the-Fields right in Trafalgar Square next to The National Gallery. At 8.30am, we were the first and. only customers there at that time except for that one restaurant
nspite if all the coffee shops around Trafalgar Square, I think that the best coffee is served here in the crypt. Freshly made and bursting with flavour.
The setting itself merits a visit. In the crypts below St Martin in the Fields church. So you are seated below a series of beautiful and old stone archways that hold up the entire building.
It's a cafeteria style cafe, but quality and variety of food is much better than you would tend to expect from most cafeterias.
They serve a variety of hot meals through the day, with a lot of lovely little touches. Which other cafeteria offers you a jug of hot custard with your apple crumble?
Lots if vegetarian options too and they are open till around 8, so you can even pop in for an early dinner.
Trust me, this is not coffee shop fare, but good hearty cooking and given that winter is almost here, it's nice to get out of the cold.
When I started researching restaurants in London for our trip, I was overwhelmed. I tried to limit my focus to the areas closest to our hotel and I tried to find reasonably priced places to dine. Dining out in London can get very expensive and we didn't want to be spending $150+ every meal. We also knew that we'd be so busy sight-seeing that we would not want to be bound to a reservation time at a "fancier" dinner. One of the places I found was Cafe in the Crypt at St. Martin in the Fields. It's cafeteria style dining in a crypt.
I am fascinated with this place, it is so unique. You would NEVER find anything like this in America. It is a cafe located underneath a church that has tombstones in the cafe floor. In America it is rude to step on tombstones, but here it is normal. I find that strange, but fascinating too at the same time. The food is set up cafeteria style but I assure you it does not taste like cafeteria food. The food here is pretty good! I suggest coming here for a unique dining experience. I'm going to come back the next time I'm in London.
I've traveled and eaten all over the world and not eaten at a place as unique as this. The floor is made of Headstones and the walls lined with crypts. This place is a TRIP! The food is mediocre but the atmosphere is without question worth a trip!
Creepiest Cafe. This is by far one of the coolest (and creepiest!) places to grab a quick bite to eat. Although the food is served "cafeteria-style", it is your average cafe fare, but combined with the graves and tombs buried within the walls and beneath your feet make for an interesting stop to literally "dine with the dead".
The best thing about Cafe in the Crypt is the architecture and ambiance. Second is food. Third is staff that at times appeared to be confused. After passing through the cafeteria-like line with trays...
A lovely Saturday afternoon visiting the National Gallery with my friend involved introducing her toddler to the wonderful painting of Whistlejacket. This huge oil on canvas painting of the young horse by George Stubbs is one of my favourites and always seems to impress me, no matter how many times I see it! Following on from George Stubbs’ painting, we ventured onto see the beautiful Water-Lily Pond and other paintings by Monet. A visit to the National Gallery would not be complete if Monet’s paintings were not seen! We were lucky on this occasion as the National Gallery had two new acquisitions, Water Lillies, Setting Sun and The Japanese Bridge. Monet’s Impressionist paintings of his garden in Giverny are really special! After our fun art filled afternoon, it was time to rest and go for a cup of tea. My friend suggested the nearby Cafe in the Crypt in St Martin-in-the-Fields. The cafe is below the church and can be accessed by the cylindrical pavilion entrance, just round the corner
Such a different sort of a cafe, transported me to a different era. I was looking for something light and the soup of the day was a perfect match for my cold self on chilly afternoon. The place was really busy when I went in, and to be honest I couldn't see a single empty spot. The staff were pretty friendly and helped me share a table with a 70+ old lady who was super sweet to me :)
I'm definitely going go try the other items on their menu and am sure it will be good and sumptuous.
Just one small suggestion would be to carry some cash along just incase you want to order just a tea or a soup, as their machines don't accept card for orders under £5
An 18th century brick-vault above tombs but ultimately still just a cafeteria. It's a remarkable place to visit for the sake of having experienced the architecture and history but not much else. Drop by for a coffee if you're in the area to visit the national gallery or a show.
Oh the surroundings! As you can see from the pictures, sipping tea (or whatever you fancy) in this place is a little bit of what makes London special. Tea or coffee with scones & 2 cakes is £5.95. I have found it impossible to eat all that so if you buy an extra tea (pot) or coffee, you have a luxurious afternoon tea in amazing surroundings for about £4 each. The traditional English breakfast is £7.50 and contains eggs, Cumberland sausage, black pudding, back bacon, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, two slices of toast & tea or coffee. Again, sharing is a solid option. There’s also the standard yogurt, fruit, cereals and pastries an the items in the English breakfast are sold separately too. There’s baguettes & sandwiches for £3.95, with fillings like chicken & smoked bacon, smoked salmon & ricotta, grilled eggplant & zucchini, etc, and soups and salads. There’s a soup & sandwich combo for £6.50 and soup & sandwich for £6.75. The pre-theatre dinner from 5-7 weeknights & 12-4 Sundays is £15 for entrée, dessert & a glass of wine. Wednesdays are Jazz night and include an Indian curry with beer or wine for £11.25. In all, a fantastic place to sit for a while, enjoy the surroundings & be well-nourished.
Nothing like a traditional afternoon tea in the crypt of the church, before visiting the National Gallery, located next door. Several options are available to accompany your tea: scone, jam and vanilla butter, and if you push the vice, you can also accompany it all with a slice of chocolate / caramel cake. We enjoyed everything wisely, almost forgetting that is above ancient tombs!
We had a pre-concert dinner at the Crypt and had a most enjoyable experience. The cafeteria-style food is not Michelin-level, but honest. The atmosphere is unique and set the mood for a wonderful concert that followed. I would definitely do it again.
Café in the Crypt is a unique dining experience located in the crypt of St Martin-in-the-Fields church, which is situated in Trafalgar Square. The café offers a variety of traditional British dishes, as well as a selection of cakes, pastries, and hot drinks.
The visitor enjoys the unique, positive atmosphere, decor, and food.
Crypt provides a unique and atmospheric setting for a restaurant, prices are generally considered reasonable given the central location. In addition, the staff so friendly and attentive with their service.
Overall, Cafe in the Crypt is definitely worth a visit if you're looking for something a little different in London's bustling Trafalgar Square area.
The name accurately describes what this place is, but it isn't as creepy as it first sounds. Although there are some memorial stones on the floor and on the walls, there are no tombs.
The food is a bit pricy for what it is, but the service is fast - useful if you are going to a matinee at one of the many nearby theatres.
Lovely hidden place but feels a bit like a school canteen with trays left on tables. Also the lift didn’t work when I went and it looked like it hadn’t worked in a while.
Found this gem of a place on Coronation Day. Traveled from Australia for the special day and could not get into Trafalgar Square. A security guy sent us in to the Crypt and watched the ceremony with a large crowd of happy people. Was a fabulous day, with great food and we even managed to toast the King with a nice Sav Blanc. I think when I left England in 1972 you wouldn’t have been able to have a glass of wine in the Crypt. Thank you for a fabulous day 😀
Just a nice place for a light meal and some good music. The design is really nice and real conversation starter. Just love the live music. I don’t know what other to say than its a must for me to visit when in London as its just such a warm and therapeutic place to sit, think, chat, and have lunch. God bless to all and enjoy.
In October 2023, two cans of Coke £6.00 😳. We would have had some cake, that looked delicious, however it wasn’t covered by cloches so I couldn’t eat it. Hot food, again was uncovered.
On the plus side, the venue is lovely inside (clean and huge!). Ticketed events, advertised on posters, are very reasonably priced!
The coffee was good and the crypt was cool. I went around lunch and they said they did cream tea online but when I was there they didn’t have it.
Great stop in the Crypt Café for a quick brunch lunch in a hurry. The choices at the counter were a little overwhelming given we were past ‘hangry’ so being indecisive; we went with crumble custard & coffee: a winning combination. Plenty of choice if you are able to make it!
The crumble was delicious & plentiful, the custard was smooth, sweet & hot & the coffee (flat white) was flat & white!
The staff are friendly at the counters although given the location under St Martins; it can be worth leaving one of your party to find a table if you intend to sit in during busy times as it is often difficult to find somewhere whilst balancing your tray.
There is a lift that will take you down into the crypt from street level but it can be deathly slow, so descending the steps gracefully may be preferable.
I needed a quick bite to eat while attending the anti ULEZ protest. It is a lovely location to get away from the maddening crowds and have a little peace and quiet. Food is excellent and fairly priced, service was good and I was able to sit and enjoy my grub. Oh I asked for a tuna bap, but got a tuna wrap. It was still very good.
