Oh, this is my new spot! I went here for a mate's birthday lunch, it was the right choice. They got a great lunch deal and the food was absolutely delicious. Great portion size and good service.
My Dutch hubby was craving Indonesian food. Its an ex Dutch colony so having an Indonesian is akin to getting a curry in the UK. The pan SE Asian menu at Banana Tree is actually a good way to enjoy Indonesian. You can combine heavy Indonesian/Malaysian dishes which tend to use a lot of coconut and peanuts with lighter fare from Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia.
Our first starter was chicken satay. Not the best I've had, but decent. Not cooked over charcoal, but charred and nicely spiced. It didn't need the satay sauce which I found too sweet. The satay sauce was made properly with crushed peanuts instead of peanut butter. I preferred the satay sauce when mixed with the homemade sambal. Don't miss asking for extra hot sauce here. The sambal is amazing. I liked the way that the satay was served in the traditional fashion with chunks of cucumber as well ketupat, the Malaysian cubes of compressed sticky rice.
Our second starter was the char grilled aubergine with caramel sauce. Beautiful dish of slightly oily aubergine, with blackened flesh. Sauce was not the Vietnamese caramel and fish sauce I was expecting, but based on Indonesian ketjap (a sweet sticky soy variant). Beautifully balanced with the addition of deep fried shallot and fresh coriander and basil which added texture and green notes.
For mains I was a little disappointed by beef rendang. Not meltingly soft. Will try chicken rendang next time. The aubergine and tamarind curry was great though. Tangy, and flavourful, if a little oily.
Banana tree has been one of the first places where I used taste card. The food here is really very different and delicious. The use of taste card made it very economical . The service is good. The presentation is very well. Its a nice place to sit and relax with friends.
Has a great selection of vegetarian options with a dedicated veg menu, was great as I was with two vegetarians :) everything we had was delicious and the place had a nice relaxing ambience! If you like a bit of spice they have a range of spicy dishes and sauces to heat things up!
Just amazing. Contrary to most reviews here.. my experience was lovely..
I ate here last month with a friend and we both loved it
I revisited with my boyfriend a couple of weeks ago and received the same great service
the girl was genuinely friendly !! The Food was Delicious!!! Well priced!
Overall it was a brilliant experience and Will definitely recommend and go back...Keep up the good work guys!!!
Had an excellent curry here, full of flavour and superb presentation. Staff were really friendly and very good value for money. Would highly recommend.
Great food and fast. Since moving to the UK, I have been searching for somewhere that makes a really good laksa. The food here comes in at the top by a long shot so far. the food came out really quickly, was fresh and tasted great. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere made the experience.
Great lunchtime venue. Nice. Completely good for a quick lunch. We liked what we got and thought it was good value.
Surprisingly spicy treat. Doesn't look like much, but the food was quick, tasty and (for the location) very cheap.
Every dish is almost perfect! Around £10 per meal but you can find dishes with as low as £6. Highly recommended!
Banana Tree in Upper Street has a nice buzzy vibe to it, a mixture of out-of-office workers, solo diners and groups of friends. The thai-style menu has veggie options aplenty with noodles, curries and soup options.
A great oriental restaurant to go for if you want good food and you want it quick! It has a similar feel to the Wagamama restaurants. I liked the open kitchen which formed part of the dining area and this restaurant had friendly staff.
I was initially a bit skeptical about Banana Tree because it serves such a wide mix of cuisines; however, I ended up being really pleasantly surprised by the meal I had. Their dishes are really unique and I really liked the combinations they managed to create while still maintaining the key components of the different cuisines. I definitely recommend trying the beef jerky with crackers appetizer and the crispy chicken with mango and sweet lime sauce which were both really unique and delicious.
The restaurant has a cool vibe, it has an urban look but while still remaining unpretentious. The service is really great, the waiters are friendly and attentive and they're helpful if you're trying to pick a dish or find what appetizer goes well with it. I thought the prices were really reasonable especially given that we ate really well and the portions were quite large. Although this restaurant serves great food, I feel like they've managed to maintain a casual neighborhood restaurant feel, which I really appreciate.
Out of all the different ethnic Asian cuisines located in this area, Banana Tree stands out. Perhaps it's because of the eclectic mixture of Indonesian and Indian cuisine combined together to create a varying mixture of sweet, salty and spicy food which tantalise your taste buds long after the portions have disappeared. It may not be the most posh restaurant in town but Banana Tree is an experience in itself. Try the pad thai and duck or the fish in sweet mango sauce and top it off with one of their delectable desserts; this writer's preference being the banana fritters.
I loved this restaurant! The portions of every dish were huge and super tasty. For starters we shared a portion of the street style crispy dough which came with a gorgeous satay sauce and was delicious. It set our expectations high for our mains and I wasn’t disappointed
I had the king prawn Pho which was delicious with a good amount of spice, which I added to myself using the well-stocked sauce selection in the middle of every table. My friend had the seafood curry which was equally delicious with plenty of prawns and fish, and another had a plate of wok fried noodles. The best part of every meal was the portion size. Although neatly presented on black bowls, don’t be deceived; the dishes are never ending and given how delicious they are you won’t stop until you find the bottom!
The place is also listed on taste card so price wise was a steal for me. Would definitely return here as I was mightily impressed with the flavour of all the dishes.
Want to be a bit more adventurous but don’t want your stomach to suffer? Banana Tree may be the one to go to, as it offers a wide range of mild Indochinese food. The spring rolls are a perfect example and great for sharing (and make sure to keep any sauce left over for your main meal).
It’s a great place not only for mild-food lovers, but for vegetarians and pescetarians too, as we get our own menu. The meal I usually order is the Chilli, Ginger and Basil Stir Fry, but for a milder option I’d recommend the Pak Choy, Tofu & Braised Shitake Mushrooms.
The best time to go is of an evening; when the decorative lights go on, the place looks truly beautiful.
A nice varied menu - Indonesian/Malaysian/Thai/Singaporean etc. all under one roof, with some highlights from the various cuisines. Friendly service, pleasant ambience. We had a show to catch and they were very accomodating, dinner for two in 45 mins, and under 45 pounds - with a fairly standard cocktail included. We ordered small dishes - the chicken moneybags were terribly dry, the chicken satay was average and a little overcooked, the kajang sauce was very unauthentic and really sweet, but so delicious, the som tam salad was pleasant. I really liked the prawn Malaysian laksa, though it could have done with more fire. Dessert - pandan coconut pancakes with icecream was pleasant enough. In retrospect, this meal was never going to blow me away, but it was good enough.
Went here for a Saturday night dinner with the family. As it was a Saturday night we felt it important to go somewhere we could book a table (not one of the trendy queuing restaurants) and sadly we were informed they only book tables for 6 or more (there were 5 of us). Fortunately for us they waived this and allowed us to book which was nice of them. To be honest though even if they didn't I would've just called up again and booked a table for 6..... however this was good customer service.
I have to hold my hands up as I was quite late (30 mins) for the table we had booked but fortunately the rest of my family did get there on time. My family weren't too miffed when I got there so I assume the staff were doing something right :)
After my apologies we were able to order and this was done very quickly without problems.
We ordered a variety of dishes:
Starters - Chicken Satay (nice but could've been more substantial due to the price)/ Thai tamarind and garlic wings (small wings but excellent sauce)/ Chicken and Shitake Moneybags (quite poor, tasted like mince in pastry with limited flavour).
Mains - Beef rendang (didn't live up to the hype it's given on the menu)/ Roasted duck breast with Pei Pa hoisin sauce (the overall favourite dish of the family) / Pad Thai (difficult to get wrong but I have had better) / 'Ying Yang' Laksa with Prawns (this in my opinion was the best dish by a country mile!) - we also ordered 2 rices to go along with this (however for us one would've been plenty, as we had quite a few noodle dishes.)
We also had numerous drinks to accompany the meal - the 'Dirty Thai Guy' got those who dared to a good level of merry and I would definitely recommend the Spiced Malay 'Pull' tea (I ordered it cold) however it is very sweet, so may not be to everyone's taste.
Overall it was a good meal, however I was expecting better. The food all generally had the feel and taste of that which you would get from a 'chain', acceptable and unoffensive, which is disappointing although obviously not unexpected. However I would definitely return for the Laksa as I thought this to be a step-above.
The service was very good, with a perfect level of attentiveness without seeming like they were watching our every move. The food was all very prompt (which I unfortunately can't say for myself on this occasion...) so there were no problems there. Additionally the lead waiter was nice and charismatic and even played a little prank on my sister ( I always have time for that!) Service charge is added to the bill at 10% however this is definitely deserved and even if it was more there wouldn't be a problem.
I would return to this restaurant but the only dish I would personally reorder is the Laksa, as I would really like to see what some of the other dishes have to offer.
The place is cozy, food is various and accurately prepared. We will surely come back again!
Banana tree is a chain restaurant serving up oriental food. I have eaten here several times mostly with friends visiting from outside town. Always had a good a experience and everyone's liked the place.
Personally I think the signature dish here has to be the beef reddang. It is slightly spicy and I would recommend asking the chef to make it even more so with a helping of fresh green chilli on top. Served with just plain rice - this curry really is to die for!
Two of us ate here last week and had a very enjoyable meal - I had Chicken and Shitake Money bags and my husband loved his Tamarind Spicy Aubergine and Noodles with Bean Sprouts & Dark Soy. Our friends had the mild chicken curry (Ayam Kunyit Chicken Curry). The banana fritters were fab the warm fondant chocolate cake was very nice.
Came to this place on Sunday 29th October 2023 with my friend and his family who are regular customers here along with his brothers family from America.
Loved the food, I would recommend the Banana Tree Spiced Noodles. The service from Kareem was absolutely outstanding.
If you are in the Angel Islington area then I would highly recommend that you dine out at Banana Tree.
Beautifully decorated restaurant, helpful staff (thank you Nathalia ☺️)and quick service.
We ordered Pad Thai and Crispy fish - both dishes were excellent! They also do a 2 for 1 cocktail or mocktails.👌
I had a lovely time at Banana tree, Angel. I went with friends and kids. They couldn’t swap out the fish in the red curry for chicken but eventually I had the chicken green curry. It was a soul warming experience. There were lots of choices for the kids too. Shreeya who served us was particularly nice. I would definitely recommend.
This is the second time I had travelled from Turkey Street Enfield to Banana Tree Islington to have the delicious Thai Food .I was received with smiling face by Karim who very well remembered that I had visited with my children & grand children earlier to celebrate my wife’s birthday.
After occupying a place for 2 of us a young smart girl Shreeya came to take our orders and the hot food was served very quickly . We eat Laksa and Pad Thai which was very tasty The restaurant was full being Saturday night ,the atmosphere was very beautiful and food very very tasty & the service by Shreeya was incomparable. We left the restaurant with a memorable dinner and will visit again & recommend every one to visit this restaurant if you want to try healthy , tasty Thai Food .
Always great service and amazing food. Thank you to our waiter for the evening Shan. I lovely chap.
Came here for the first time on the recommendation of a friend and not only was the service great, but the food was outstanding! Most definitely worth a visit you won’t be disappointed! Thanks for the amazingly food and service Robert!
For starters we had satay chicken, butterfly prawns. Mains we ordered Beef Rendang and Red Thai Curry. Food was really good as usual and our server for the evening Karim was absolutely amazing, made sure our food was free from allergen (as I have an allergy) and took good care of us.
We had a great experience at Banana Tree Islington. The food was delicious, it tasted fresh and so well presented. My favourite was the Laksa soup for starter. There are so many vegan options and variety of vegan alternatives (vegan pieces, tofu and another one I don't remember). Prices are OK, I would expect a little less. Also 2 for 1 cocktails.
First time visiting Banana Tree Islington for lunch.
I had the beef rendang and a side of chicken dumplings. Both were amazing. The beef rendang got spicier the deeper I got into it but there was plenty of beef which was very welcoming.
Loved the chicken dumplings I could of eaten a hundred.
Service was excellent and there was a lunch rush on too with deliveries and walk ins but our table of 12 was well handled.
Thank you
Served by the smiley and polite Doris. Our food came within good time and everything looked as yummy as it was delicious. I used to be a regular here when I was studying closer. The decor has had a revamp and the place is great for a catch up with friends, business outing or a date :)
This restaurant is a good pan asian food. The food taste real nice, I really like how well cook the beef is. Thank you for your service Rob😊
For starters, I had the fritters and chicken satay. The fritters or amazing crunchy on the outside soft on the inside full of flavour, my favourite dish I had that evening. The chicken satay evidenced being marinated for a good period of time. It came with a peanut sauce which complimented it very well. The beef rendang was full of flavour and went well with the jasmine rice. However, the laksa was not as exciting as I was expecting it to be, maybe because I was comparing it to another restaurant. I personally did not feel satisfied. The soup part had flavour of coconut and chilies but for the noodles they didn’t carry any other flavour with them, so were bland.
I understand why they have two for one for mock tails as they are quite basic and nothing special.
Food was really lovely. Ordered the tamarind aubergine dish and my friend ordered the tai green curry. Both were delicious. Service was great. We were served by Erik who swiftly showed us to our seats. He was very friendly and helpful especially as my friend has some allergens. Overall experience was great. Would highly recommend a visit.
We ordered several starters to share and they were all delicious (dumplings, gyozas, sweet corn fritters and edamame beans). Cocktails were 2x1 and the Long Island was fantastic.
Our waiter, Natalya, helped us deciding on which plates to choose and was very kind and helpful.
Delicious food, and speedy service which indicates the food is fresh. Friendly staff and good drinks.
