Reviews Thali Restaurant

South Kensington isn’t somewhere that immediately springs to mind for good Indian food.  In fact, when I lived down the road, in West Brompton, I despaired of finding a good Indian restaurant and instead used to visit Taiwan Village to indulge in hot, spicy Taiwanese dishes.  If only I’d found Thali, I might never have left.  Actually, that’s simply not true – but finding a local Indian must be high on the list of desirables for anyone looking for a new home.

Curry taken up a notch. Loads of great things to try in this cracking North Indian restaurant. Started with some dece starters: lamb chops w/ a really good mint sauce, surprisingly tasty crispy spinach salad, chicken biriyani w/ an amazing (mild) mustard sauce, scallops & samosas good too.

Our mains were usual suspects Chicken Tikka & Lamb Rogan J, but done very well.

Service good, house bottle of red good. Price the premium you'd expect for the quality/area but not through the roof.

Overall a good shout

Surely the samosa has to be the best food invention ever? There should even be a national samosa day – one which I’m happy to endorse. They’re crispy, golden, come in my guises and are absolutely jam-packed with flavour in only a few tiny bits. Often they’re accompanied by a good tamarind sauce or coriander chutney too – taking the samosa experience up just another notch. Getting our samosa fix on, we found ourselves visiting a South Kensington institution, Thali Restaurant on the bustling Old Brompton Road.

We had a party of four for dinner at Thali and we're able to walk in at 9:00 on a Friday night, so was concerned that it might not be as good as the reviews; that was quickly proved wrong. The wines are reasonably priced, although a small selection.

We skipped the appetizers, except for papadams, and went straight for the main course. The table had Lamb Rogan Josh, Chicken Tikka Makhani, and Tandoori Chicken. The lamb was excellent, spicy but not hot, Tandoori Chicken was nice but a bit dry so the mint sauce was required. Chicken Tikka Makhani was perfect nice and creamy, mild in spice but very flavorful.

Sides of Sag Paneer, Lemon Rice, and Pulao Rice. Sag Paneer was different than most I've had, it was pured and not as creamy, but nice chucks of Paneer.

I'd recommend the Lamb over the other mains. Definitely go again! Only downside was the dining room was too warm.

One of my favourite indian restuarants. The varied and interesting dishes is refreshing allowing you to experiment dishes you wouldnt normally, whilst endeavouring in the traditional known delicious dishes so you have a lovely meal no matter what. The bar has upmarket drinks with a choice of smoothly blended cocktails that very nice.

Not too expensive. Great older and nicely dressed crowd. I love this place and go there every so often knowing great food and service is offered.

Thali gets its name from a traditional way of serving food in India - a complete meal in several little dishes all together on a thali (which is a platter, to the non-Hindi speakers amongst us). At Thali you feel you are getting authentic – but lavish – North Indian cuisine. As well you should. Dila Ram, the head chef, was trained at Taj, the leading luxury hotel group in India.   Complete meal or not, we went for starters after the obligatory poppadoms and chutneys. The tandoori-baked cauliflower kept its crunch, the green lentil patties were perfectly spiced and the pakora were crispy and flavourful.  But the real highlight was the palak chaat. Now I like cooked spinach, but it is an innately soggy thing. Not here. I don’t know how they work their magic, but the result is light as air, and crisp as, well, a crisp. You could eat it all day, smothered in yogurt and tamarind. But we didn’t. We had the thali main event to attend to. A silver platter ar

I was craving something spicy so we thought we'd try this place. The spicy prawns with Goan masala were really good and actually were the highlight of my meal as nothing else was quite spicy enough. We ordered veg samosas, shish kebab, 2 veg dishes and a prawn biriani and a Peshawari nan. Nice flavours, very rich and I would imagine extremely high in calories!

The restaurant itself has tasteful decor with candlelight and fresh flowers, however I'd recommend some background music as could hear peoples conversations across the room.

The owner is always here to help you when ordering.
The curries were all good. No complains. Breads were fine too.
The service was professional and cordial yet still welcoming.
Overall  a lovely cozy restaurant with good food and attentive service.

Great food and great service! Family run business that offers a personal service. We had the lamb and prawn starters which were beautifully cooked. Chicken curry was excellent as well. We’ll be back!

White tablecloth, scrape the crumbs off the table kind of place, but not stuffy. You can still dress casually. Our waitress provided excellent service, and the food was very solid. We ordered a fish sampler for two (which was an appetizer platter), palak chat, dal makhani, and naan. It was a perfect amount of food for two. The tandoori salmon that was part of the platter was surprisingly delicious.

Delicious food. Very popular, hence the 45 minute wait for main courses. But then, well worth the wait!

The starters were out of this world, we had samosas, prawns and scallops. the main courses weren't bad. I'd been told about the venison curry which seemed not to be on the menu, so was a bit gutted about that. Service very good.

Absolutely fantastic food & service. It is our fourth time going and we have now tried a huge amount of the menu. I would highly recommend a Thali itself. The team are lovely, welcoming with a keen attention to detail! I do think the price is spot on for the quality of the food. This is by far the best Indian Restaurant in South Kensington, Chelsea if not London. Looking forward to going back soon.

We had take way this evening, really delicious and much better than average Indian restaurants in London. We hesitated a little as only 4 stars on Google, that would have been a mistake!!! The dishes were top notch and portions generous.

A great Indian with novel and wonderful food. I have just eaten here having seen it for years. I don't do many reviews but this deserves it as the staff are really friendly and the food is super tasty. I had the lamb with beetroot and will rush back for more asap. Who could possibly give this a negative review? Unless they are friends of a nearby competitor??
