Incredible food - we had 6 dishes between 2 which was plenty. Highlights were the prawn toast and chicken wings. Service was great, place was buzzing. Will definitely be back. Try the yuzu frozen margarita - so tasty!!

This place is very close to my workplace and we chose it for our team lunch!
I ordered a lunch menu with Korean fried wings and grilled salmon. Both the dishes were very tasty! The portion of food was completely filling .French toast for dessert was warm and yummy too 😋

When I visit London, "first come first" is to visit this restaurant. Always become my number one list for London's casual dining. In my opinion, their SUPERSTAR is SUKIYAKI, BEEF SHORT RIBS, KOREAN CHICKEN WINGS, PRAWN TOAST, FRENCH TOAST. That's all my all time menu in this restaurant. Treasure!

I’ve eaten out a lot this Summer. This restaurant has got to be one of the best I’ve been to in terms of flavour, food, atmosphere and staff. A complete explosion of flavours and tastes. Fresh food and a vibrant atmosphere make it one to go back for. Highly recommended!

I really liked the ramen, the broth is well made. The fried chicken was also delish. The ambience was disappointing due to acoustic and therefore we had to change our table 3 times. The staff was nice and helpful, price vs food was quite reasonable.

This place is awesome.

The food is so good that I would try everything on their menu. We took the 30 pounds menu and my favorite dishes were the wings, the aubergine and the hot stone rice. I’m getting hungry while I write.

Last but not to forget, I haven’t taste such a good matcha ice-cream since my trip in Japan.

The waiter was so nice with me. I told her I don’t like sakù but that I still wanted to find the right one for me, and she literally sat with me and let me try four different types! I still ended up not finding the right one, but at least we tried. I took the “girly” version with plum, which was very nice and fresh.

This place is definitely recommended, can’t wait to go back!

We reserved a room downstairs for a group of friends. There is a set menu of either vegetarian or non vegetarian to chose from. They serve halal chicken and I was happy to note when they were willing to swap the lamb chops (not halal) for chicken thigh to accommodate my halal needs. Also the beef rice was made without beef. The food was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes. The chicken wings were exceptional, the edamame (which we ordered separately was great), the aubergine was delicious, the corn with its flavouring was top notch. The dessert (Kinako French Toast) although highly recommended in all other blog posts was the only less appealing item. Would highly recommend their food!

Everything here was delicious, punchy, guilty pleasure food. I'd gone for the french toast for all the hype, and if it hadn't been for that I wouldn't have ordered it as I was pretty full, and the friend I was with said he'd try a bit but wasn't fussed. One bite and he changed his mind, declaring it "edible happiness" and hoovering half. I was back just for the pudding 2 weeks later. But it would do the place an injustice to say that's the only reason to go, there were plenty of things that were finger-lickingly good (iberico pork, hot stone rice to name a few). I'll definitely be back to try a few more things and revisit some favourites. I docked half a star because it's slightly pricey for the style, but it's a small gripe.

A friend of mine suggested I go to Shackfuyu to try the most instagrammed and delicious dessert in town. We got to Shackfuyu at 4pm only to realise they open at 5.30. So we wondered around for an hour, I was getting so hungry at this point. As soon as it hit 5.15 I sprinted back to the restaurant and got there exactly at 5.29pm , talk about punctual. We were the first ones in the restaurant so it was completely empty.

Bone Daddies was the winner of our London Ramen Wars. However, after helping to kick off the incredible birth of ramen restaurants in our capital city, owner and ex-Nobu chef Ross Shonhan hasn’t been resting on his laurels. He opened up Flesh and Buns before snagging a spot on Old Compton St in Soho for what was intended to be a one year pop-up. The clue is in the name of the restaurant – fuyu means winter in Japanese. However, it was such a success that it was refurbished into a permanent restaurant.

Great place in the heart of Soho!

I came here on a friday night (a while ago when it was still a pop-up) and was a bit worried, as they dont accept reservations. The place was packed, but we were kindly asked to wait at the downstairs bar and got a table after a short 10 minute wait.

The menu offers a selection of, what can be best described as Japanese style Tapas. We ordered the Aubergine, Mac and cheese, Edamame, Picanha beef, curry potatoes, and prawn toast. All dishes were served quickly and I would recommend them all! Especially the Aubergine and beef! Absolutely amazing!

Dont miss out on their french toast and green tea soft ice cream dessert, which is definitely the best pudding you will ever try!!

I will go back as soon as possible! Great service, amazing food!

I don’t know why it took me so long to finally hit up Shackfuyu, after a failed attempt to go during their pop up. I was lucky, Shackfufu had become a permanent fixture in Soho Crompton Street. The photos of their infamous Kinako French Toast has been in my face all over social media ever since their pop up. Ross Shonhan is the man behind Bone Daddies and Flesh and Buns.

A couple of weeks ago it was #InternetFriendsDay – ok yes, it’s a made up holiday but it is something that got me thinking about all the wonderful people who I’ve met via blogging, Twitter and Instagram. I’ve met so many fantastic friends who I now tweet, what’s app and actually meet up with IN REAL LIFE! I love the idea of having a special day to commemorate these people and perhaps next year we’ll all be sending each other Happy #InternetFriendsDay cards – yes I’m determined to make this a thing.

I first visited Shackfuyu (from the guy behind Bone Daddies and Flesh & Buns) back in 2015 and loved it, but it was only a pop up then. It has since undergone a refurb and the lease has been extended meaning it’s a permanent fixture on Soho’s Old Compton Street. Gone is the previous owner’s pizza oven and there’s a new bar at the front and a long narrow dining room out the back with booths to the right. I do love a good booth me. We were seated at a table for two at the very end looking out at everyone, next to the door down to the toilets, which felt a bit ‘on show’.

When I've got a hankering for comfort food, it isn’t Japanese cooking which normally springs to mind.

Sushi, sashimi and soba are just
 well
 too healthy.

However, now I’ve eaten Shackfuyu’s Japanese take on Western cooking (known as Yoshoku), I’ll be dreaming of rabbit curry doughnuts, buttermilk fried chicken with kimchee and pork cheeks with cider miso during the iciest of winter nights.

Delighted to visit during their soft launch and try their dinner menu. Thr monk fish cheeks were unfortunately over salty. However the aubergines and pork cheeks were great. The curry donuts were also an unexpected treat. The highlight for me was their dessert. It was one of my favourite desserts in London!

Hands down, this is one the most awesome dining experiences I have ever had!

Every single dish I had was an absolute taste sensation! We had the chicken wings, aubergine, sole, prawn toast (next level amazing!), hot stone rice and a few other things. All amazing!

With the vast variety of delicious options on the menu we ended up over ordering for just two people. I was quite happy we did because the food was really that amazing!

The restaurant is located in Soho and it fits in absolutely perfectly. The vibe is great, the staff are very friendly, efficient and helpful at assisting in selecting an assortment of dishes for the table.

I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. You are guaranteed to leave here feeling happy, full and yearning to return!

Working on Carnaby Street, I feel rather spoiled when it comes to food. I am surrounded by a ridiculous amount of fantastic restaurants which I can get to in a hop, skip and a jump. A couple of minutes walk and I am in the heart of Soho. Lunchtimes are made even better with a walk down Berwick Street to get a Savage Salad or a falafel wrap from Jerusalem Falafel, finished off with a brownie from Foxcroft & Ginger. And every time I think “I can’t believe how lucky I am to work round here.”

Oh my gosh, the kinako french toast with soft serve totally lives up to its hype!! The matcha ice cream is full of flavour with its bitterness which balances out the sweetness of the french toast. The toast itself was so crispy on the outside and warm & soft on the inside. Definitely one of the best desserts in London!!

Shackfuyu..

An amazing pop up Restaurant from my favourite London's ramen spot Bone Daddies.

Simple concept: a Fusion Korean-Japanese-RestoftheWorld delicious street food!
With a kinda not too crazy pricy menu, Shackfuyu gave me a very nice impression.

Classic modern design, typical of many restaurant spots in London.
Nice and simple menu. I have to say, very appetising one.
I really love Japanese cuisine and the dishes served here were really good.

I've been here 2 times already but the ones which really impressed me are:
The famous Korean fried wings(which I just adore.. spicy, tasty, crispy outside but tender inside 9.5/10)
The Aubergine, miso and bubu arare(crispy puffed rice pellets) was just amazing.. (9/10)
The Hot stone rice is nice, balanced and with a crispy texture which I really liked. Even if is more than spicy (9/10)
As well the monkfish cheeks with chili pepper and lemon mayo were deliccious (9/10).

I suggest to have this lunch with a nice chilled Asahi. Which will give you the "Aaah" in addition to all the pleasure that you've got during the meal!

Nice hit Ross Shonhan!! ;)

I’m pretty late to the Japanese food scene in London. When you’re going out with Jonathan Frost, who thinks that no amount of sushi will ever fill him up- which is the main aim of the game when taking Frostie out for dinner- you don’t get to go to a lot of Japanese restaurants. So when my colleagues planned a Friday lunch trip, I was a teency bit unreasonably excited. I’d seen so many  Instagram-perfect shots of the dishes there and worked myself up into a Shackfuyu-hysteria. I was psyched to go eat this food. My job is to get other people excited about restaurants, and I think I’d gone over the mark into worrying people with my enthusiasm. Luckily, it was all genuine, and I can now confirm with authority, totally justified.

I confess, I’m a pretty “slow” food blogger so it’s taken me a while to get to this ‘pop up’, courtesy of Bone Daddies. Shackfuyu is only meant to be a year long pop up (wait, those two phrases don’t make sense together) but I hope it stays or I’ll have to get back into Shackfuyu again sharpish!

Shackfuyu has been on my must-eat list for a very long time! It comes from the guys behind Bone Daddies and Flesh & Buns – if you haven’t seen the french toast with matcha soft serve on your Instagram feed then I don’t know where you have been hiding!. I was meeting Katy from Little Miss Katy for the first time (we’d chatted lots online and thought it was about time we met in person!) and when I suggested Shackfuyu I was very happy she was as keen to go as me!

I am really excited to share today's review with you guys! From the fabulous Bone Daddies comes a new pop up in the heart of Soho; Shackfuyu. Don't be put off by the name, this restaurant is one of the most fun and most delicious I have been to in London. If you love Japanese or Korean grub, or fancy your food with a little South American flair, then Shackfuyu is the place for you.

Where: Shackfuyu, Soho

When: Thursday night

What we ate:

Literally everything! (As recommended by Twenty Something London). Yellow tail tostadas, Korean fried wings, prawn toast, Mac and cheese, fried potatoes with curry sauce, beef picanha

Highlights:

Extremely friendly knowledgeable and helpful staff talked us through the whole menu with good understanding of what is in each dish. Our waiter also told us the chef had made additions from the market, showing strong communication between front of house and the kitchen.

The Korean fried wings (try saying that 10 times faster!) were absolutely mouthwatering! Yes they were hot and had a building heat the longer your left it, but my god they were amazing.

The beef picanha had a excellent soft texture and a caramel sweet meaty flavour, a sure sign of very good beef cooked properly.

The prawn toasts were like none I have ever eaten (in a good way!).

My highlight dish was the Mac and Cheese. I could have eaten bowl after bowl of this stuff; it is absolutely amazing. Rich and creamy, soft but with a crunchy top, cheesy and yet a touch meaty in flavour - this is a dish every Londoner needs to try.

Lowlights:

The tostadas are very small: like an appetiser rather than a starter but nonetheless very tasty.

Also the potatoes with the curry sauce were not a great dish for me. Some of the potatoes were really soggy which isn't a nice texture in the mouth.

Overall:

If you don't visit Shackfuyu during its one year pop up on Compton St you will massively regret it. The food is outstanding and at really reasonable prices too. The restaurant itself is joy to be in thanks to the chatty and uplifted atmosphere. Shackfuyu is the most fun Japanese restaurant I have ever been to and I can't wait to head back soon!

Due to a certain thing called exams, (which are not over yet btw), I feel like I’ve been living in a hole. I may have missed the fact that people have been raving about a new dessert, which has been labelled “London’s best dessert of 2015”. What?! A new dessert that’s so good, that I haven’t tried yet? What?! As soon as I heard this, I persuaded Z that I needed a revision break, and off we went to Shackfuyu to get our hands on some Kinako French toast topped with green tea ice cream.

Shackfuyu is a little Japanese pop up restaurant that will be open until February 2016. Unfortunately, Shackfuyu is not halal, so we set out to Soho just for this so called amazing dessert (which as we clarified, does not contain alcohol).

The dessert definitely was a “matcha” made in heaven 😉 This is not an ordinary dip your bread in some egg mediocre French toast. This was a sweet, buttery, perfectly squidgy, crispy edged, thick slice of goodness. Served with a swirl of green tea ice cream, it made for a lovely dessert. I feel, however, that it is overhyped on social media and I definitely wouldn’t call it the best dessert of 2015. Perhaps I expected too much and although I enjoyed it, I probably wouldn’t go all the way to Shackfuyu just for this dessert again.

It was first introduced as a Bone Daddies pop-up meaning that its not here to stay for long (12 months in fact), with the name of the restaurant deriving from 'Shack', I guess, meaning a 'Shack' and fuyu which translates to 'winter' in Japanese. (It opened during Winter of 2014.) French toast is thick, and sweet, topped with Kinako powder, accompanied with a massive soft serve of green tea. Take-out green tea ice-cream can be ordered for ÂŁ3.50, a very generous pot of serving in fact.

I would have given this a 5 and I rarely give places a 5/5 - called me a whinging old hag if you wish but Shackfuyu do such a great job with their food. There was the teeniest little glitch that let it down half a mark, which I will come onto in the next paragraph but first things first - the food, the food, the food. And THAT French toast.

I'd be lying if I said I came here for anything but the French toast. When you love dessert as much as I do and the entirely London social media collective are describing this as "London's best dessert", you feel a sense of urgency to try it out, angst that you will miss this pop up opportunity and once again with the blimming no reservations. Fortunately, they do take reservations for lunch so I sent an email asking for a reservation for 2 on a weekday. Now unfortunately, i didn't get a response for a few weeks but they were very apologetic for this when I emailed them and were kind enough not only to then book my table for 2 but also to offer a free dessert.

When I arrived at the restaurant, they seemed to have no record of my booking (not that I needed one anyway as there were lots of tables on a Monday lunchtime) but they had no issue when I had explained to them about the email booking etc.

The menu isn't huge but it was still a head scratcher trying to choose what to have, as virtually everything on there appealed and there were only two of us to eat it all. We were told to order between 2 - 3 sharing plates per person and ultimately chose the prawn toast okonomiyaki, aubergine, mac and cheese, spicy chicken wings and spicy edamame. I would have loved to have also chosen the scallop and the pear and endive salad, had I thought I could manage these.

The dishes arrived super quickly but were still hot, sizzling and virtually flawless. The spicy chicken wings have a real kick to them so if you aren't inclined towards spicy foods, this one might not be for you. If you are, however, these sweet but zingy wings are just a burst of flavour on your tongue and the chicken perfectly cooked. The aubergine was probably my favourite dish of the lot, gooey and soft with a delicious sweetish sauce and the contrast of the puffed rice giving them a nice crunch. I would happily just eat this all day. Every day. I liked the okonomiyaki prawn toast itself but the flakes served on top were just a little on the fishy side for me, but that's just a personal preference and it didn't stop me enjoying it. The only

The only dish we were less certain about was the Mac and Cheese and I note from previous reviews, that we weren't the only ones undecided about this dish. My sister positively disliked it, feeling it was too bland and under-seasoned. I  was able to decipher a mild flavour with it but overall, it was the dish I enjoyed least and the only one that I would not order again.

Of course, we saved space for dessert, this renowned dessert of desserts which is a Kinako French toast served with matcha soft scoop ice cream. The portion is absolutely enormous so unless you are really quite hungry when you order, I would suggest sharing a portion as I was totally stuffed on just half of it.

It actually lives up to expectations which is hard when something has been so hyped but the sweetness of the toast goes perfectly with the light refreshing taste of the green tea ice cream.  I hadn't realised that they take no issue with people coming in just for dessert as I probably would have done that had I known but I'm so glad for that oversight on my part, as it gave me an opportunity to try ought so many of the delicious savouries on offer instead.

Shackfuyu is the first pop-up restaurant from Bone Daddies. The menu revolves around the restaurant’s pizza oven, with dishes influenced by Japan following suit from their other joints; Bone Daddies Ramen Bar and Flesh & Buns. Unlike their permanent locations, you are unable to book at Shackfuyu which is why we arrived bang on 6pm for an early supper last Friday.

Let me tell you about the time the Foodie Superheroes finally managed to visit Bone Daddies' latest pop-up, Shackfuyu. Conveniently situated next to my favourite cocktail bar in Soho (Lab) this venture aims to highlight trendy Japanese food with a twist. As mentioned previously, our first attempt failed so we ended up feasting at Morada Brindisa Asador, but all's well that ends well and we managed to grab a table for all of us (plus a new recruit), hassle-free.

Conveniently situated next to my favourite cocktail bar in Soho (Lab) this venture aims to highlight trendy Japanese food with a twist.

Nursed a Ringo Starr (ÂŁ7.5) to set the night off. It's a pre-bottled hit of gin, sake and apple juice which was quite refreshing - exactly what one needs after a long week at work.

We started with a round of yellowtail sashimi tostado with avocado shiso (ÂŁ2.5 a piece) which I could absolutely have by the plateful. I had mine in one go and it just burst with such freshness and texture, I had to refrain from giggling like a school girl.

The hot stone rice (ÂŁ7.8) reminded me of many childhood visits in Kimpura, a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant in Manila where my parents would rejoice in my ability to enjoy rice as it was the only way I'd eat it. Shakfuyu's may not compare but it's as close as it can get. A well-balanced bowl of aromatics and texture, this is definitely a winner in my book.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the aubergine marinated in miso (ÂŁ5.8). A testament to Shackfuyu's smart play on texture, these sweet and smoky melt-in-your-mouth aubergine strips were pleasantly lifted with a sprinkle of crispy bubu arare (puffed rice). Please order this when you visit.

Opinions were divided on the mac and cheese (ÂŁ5.4). I'm partial to classic mac-n'-cheese recipes but Shackfuyu's twist of mentaiko (fish roe) and cock scratchings was quite interesting. It's not at all unpleasant but it isn't something I'd prefer to order next time around.

I thoroughly enjoyed the beef picanha (ÂŁ12.5) although the other half of our table had theirs a bit overdone. The kimchee tare butter sauce was pretty tasty, and I don't even like sauce with my beef.

One of the popular dishes on the menu is the prawn toast masquerading as okonomiyaki (ÂŁ5.2) and though I do get the appeal, it's not one of my favourites. Don't take my word for it, though. I'm really not keen on prawn toast. Even if it's topped with bonito flakes and Kewpie.

Fried potatoes (ÂŁ4.3) are always good, but heaps better with Japanese curry. Nothing like a good bowl of hearty, crispy-outside-fluffy-inside tots to liven up a meal.

Of course, we had to conclude our feast with the ubiquitous Kinako French toast (ÂŁ6) Search #Shackfuyu on Instagram and without a doubt, varied angles of this dish will highly populate your feed. The French toast is inexplicably dense yet light and full of buttery, syrupy flavour. This is the type of stodge you'd make time and make room in your belly for.

As a sweet gesture, we were given five extra pots of matcha ice cream (they had some issues with the soft serve machine and some of us had to wait for the ice cream) which was a very sweet (har har) gesture indeed. Brave the queues for this one, folks. Finding your match(a) is definitely worth the weight.

Overall Shackfuyu follows on the success of the other BoneDaddies ventures, but I honestly think they should find a permanent home sooner than later because that French toast alone is worthy of all the investments of an institution.

When I first heard about Shackfuyu, I assumed it was another ramen joint and ignored it but soon reports started coming in about the dishes served there and I realised it was more like an izakaya but with intriguing fusion style foods.

We thought of popping in one evening but found the place absolutely packed. Back up plan: return for lunch on Easter Sunday, when it’s possible to drop in at some of the hippest and most popular restaurants (provided they’re open on the day) without a reservation. And sure enough, Shackfuyu was half empty. Perfect, we’d get our opportunity to try it!

The Vibe

The latest pop-up Japanese inspired incarnation from the team behind Bone Daddies is a beauty, complete with downstairs drinking den and a rave-worthy menu to match. The cuisine here is their take on the Izakaya, (Japanese watering holes) serving up ‘drinking food’ with an ever changing menu designed to bring punters back regularly throughout their year-long tenure. Shackfuyu, which roughly translates as ‘winter shack’ can be found in the south eastern corner of Soho, in close proximity to other Social Concierge faves Bodega Negra and Quo Vadis.

There’s a no reservations policy, and as such, this is sure to be a packed spot Wednesday through Sunday. Thankfully, even if you’re arriving later on in the evening, there’s a hidden basement bar which serves cocktails, Japanese beer and loads of sake. If you’re arriving early and need to take the edge off, we’d suggest (taking the plunge) into the basement and ordering one of their frozen Yuzu margaritas, something of a signature drink across the Bone Daddies empire.

The Order

Where to start? There are so many great dishes here, you’ll find it a little difficult to not look like a bit of a glutton by ordering one of everything (as we did). It’s Insta heaven – don’t leave without at least trying a few of the following: Korean fried chicken, prawn toast, clay pot rice and *that* Kinako French toast with green tea ice cream. It’s also worth lending a wandering eye to the specials board. There you’ll spy a rotating selection of new dishes featuring recent inventions and seasonal produce. Have fun with it and use the quirky menu as a talking point. Gently graze and don’t forget to share.

The Game

This place is only going to be around for a year, which in the grand scheme of pop-ups seems like quite a long time, however you’ll want to grab yourself an intimate table towards the back or tucked away in one of the booths where low-lit tables allow you to bathe in a more flattering light. We pegged the original Bone Daddies as the perfect spot for a ’warm-up date’ and at Shackfuyu we get a very similar feeling. Go early, grab some drinks, order some food (but don’t be greedy), and have fun. You could well be setting yourselves up for a night ahead in Soho. If it all comes crashing down, you can always seek refuge across the road at Bar Termini.

The Faults

Whilst most all the dishes are delicious and novel takes on your standard Japanese, a few of the dishes aren’t as ‘date friendly’ as one might hope for and can be a little heavy going at times.

Sex Factor

4. The starting point to a rip roaring night out in Soho.

If you're even a little bit of a foodie in London, no doubt you've heard of Bone Daddies' new(ish) popup, Shackfuyu. And you've most likely seen many of these on your social media feed, if you're that way inclined.

That would be their iconic Kinako French Toast with Matcha Soft Serve, but let's back up.

Remember when our blog/instagram followers-turned-friends group went to Morada Asador, and how that was supposed to be Shackfuyu but they had a flooding emergency? Well, we vowed to try Round Two, and this time there were no plumbing issues. There were 9 of us (Honey, Emma, VA, Jesse, Tamsin, Alex, Thach & my husband E), hungry and ready to test this hotspot for ourselves.

First up, cocktails. I tried the Ringo Starr (gin, sake & apple juice - ringo in Japanese means apple, hence the name), which was my kind of drink - not too sweet, refreshing and light.

And then we ordered nearly the entire menu. Not that hard to do, as it's not huge, but very varied nonetheless. We chose:

Yellowtail Sashimi Tostada - avocado shiso
Aubergine - 4 miso - bubu arare
Prawn Toast masquerading as Okonomiyaki
Fried Potatoes - Japanese curry sauce
USDA Beef Picanha
Hot Stone Rice - goma tare - chilli - beef
Mentaiko Mac & Cheese - bacon - cock scratchings

Although I actually liked everything (there were mixed opinions about the mac & cheese around the table, but I personally enjoyed it a lot), the highlights for me were the beef (a must!), the prawn toast okonomiyaki, and the aubergine. They describe their food as current Japanese street food trends with a twist, which I think is a good way to put it - they all had a distinctive Japanese flair, but with an element of the unexpected.Every dish was unique and flavourful, and the portions weren't too bad either. We ordered 2 each of most dishes and that was enough for 9 people, just about.

Well, we did have to save plenty of room for dessert...

The Kinako French Toast is a bit of an icon now, and rightly so. They have got this so right. Kinako is a powder made out of soybeans, that is commonly used in Japan for traditional sweets and desserts. This goes perfectly well with the french toast, which is crispy on the outside, and fluffy yet moist on the inside. Spot on. As for the matcha soft serve, they actually had a little hiccup with their machine, which meant that we waited a while for our desserts to be completed. They gave us 7 free desserts and a massive cup of soft serve each (on top of the dessert!) to compensate, so we quickly forgot all about it in our sugar comas.

Honestly, this place is worth visiting for the dessert alone.

Would I recommend Shackfuyu? Absolutely. Grab a bunch of friends so you can try a bit of everything - or just go as a pair and stuff yourself silly.

The French toast at Shackfuyu seems to be taking on a life of itself. I have even seen it described as ‘iconic’ and that if you don’t have it when you’re there then you haven’t done Shackfuyu right. So of course we ordered it. And it was good. Really good. I would describe it as like bread and butter pudding but without the annoying raisin bits and condensed into one intense triangle. It is served with matcha green tea ice cream, and while this wasn’t particularly offensive, neither did I enjoy it all that much. I don’t like tea, or green tea, so obviously I’m a little biased. It was smooth and creamy but I thought it left a sort of minerally taste in my mouth I didn’t love. I’d have happily had just vanilla ice cream with it, and for this reason I can’t jump on the hype wagon for this dish.

And the rest? Some really good dishes available here, but overall the restaurant didn’t grab me. A bit like Flesh and Buns, where the food was definitely tasty, I am perhaps a little too cash strapped to fully appreciate it, as to do it right you probably need to not care about how much you’re ordering. I enjoyed what I ate but they were the epitome of small plates – far too tiny to satiate (and I had worked up quite an appetite flinging a pillow around at the International Pillow Fight in Trafalgar Square). The scallops for example sounded delicious, served with a chilli miso butter but we just couldn't justify paying £8 for one!

So I ordered two of the yellowtail sashimi tostada which came with avocado shiso instead. This was light and fresh tasting but mostly tasted of avocado.

Korean wings in a sticky and zingy sauce were messy and enjoyable and actually not a bad size for a portion.

The 'prawn toast masquerading as okonomiyaki' however was really quite tiny and disappointing - disappointing because it was a really different way to serve this that I relished eating and I wished there were more of it. I could have handled three times as much, especially once I gave Stephen a bite or two. They were a touch heavy handed on the bonito flakes for my liking but otherwise the Japanese mayo and seaweed flakes made this an improved version of prawn toast.

Stephen had the special of mussels which he wasn’t too fussed about it – he said the broth was a bit thin and bitter.

And finally (well, not finally - that was the French toast) we had some mac and cheese with roe which I avoided. Looking at it now it looks delicious and yet no memory surfaces of me savouring it so didn't make a big impression.

So, the food didn't rock my world probably because what I wanted was a proper dinner rather than a few snacks, and I couldn't afford to do that here. I would happily revisit for a light bite or two before heading out drinking however, just to line my stomach.

Wow! Unusual , comforting and surprising food! Great Korean wings ! JinJuu take note ! Aubergine dish was stunning , a smoky tangy stick mess! The prawn toast was brilliant , but too small a portion. Ended with the beef , charred , smoky and smothered in butter ...maybe a bit too much butter, but amazing tasty. Can't wait to go back! Only wish portions were a tad larger.

We are huge fans of Bone Daddies so when we heard the team had launched a new tapas-style pop-up, we were (almost) first in line to try it out.

Shackfuyu will offer a regularly changing menu of Japanese fusion small plates and cocktails for one year. In usual Bone Daddies-style, the atmosphere is a little grungy, complete with 80s-early 90s rock music.

When we arrived on a rainy Saturday night, the place was pretty quiet so we grabbed a booth and set about tasting as much of the menu as we could manage (for the record, we were very hungry and got through eight dishes between the two of us).

If you've read this blog for a while you may know how rare it is that I am unstintingly positive about anywhere - what can I say, I'm a discerning (*picky/fussy call it what you will) kinda gal. That said, one of the few places I adored without limitation last year was Flesh & Buns . I was therefore pretty excited when I heard about Flesh & Buns owner Bone Daddies opening a pop up place on Old Compton Street. The term "pop up" has a rather ambigous meaning these days. When the term first, well- popped up, it meant somewhere opening for just a few days or weeks. Then the phrase became a bit overused so when Jamie Oliver announced his "pop up" Jamie's Diner in Piccadilly Circus - still marketing itself as "for a limited time only'- eyes rolled, especially when it was uncovered that the lease was for a minimum of three years so hardly what most people consider "pop up".  In the case of 14a Old Compton Street it seems that the lease is for an initial year so its not yet a permanent fixture but also isn't going to be one of those places that by the time I've pulled my finger out and written about it you can't go because its already upped sticks and left. Due to its not-sure-if-its-permanent status its also not had a high gloss makeover so is charmingly rustic with the previous inhabitant's brick pizza oven still very much mid restaurant (and in use). Its is suited to casual dining with your mates rather than first date territory but none the poorer for it. It also gets pretty smoky in there from the oven so don't be going on to anywhere you need to smell nice. I'm still allergic to queuing so we had planned afternoon tea at Dean Street Townhouse for a lazy Sunday afternoon but when our table still wasnt ready 15 minutes after the booked time I went in search of Shackfuyu. Its one thing to queue when its 'no reservations' but quite another level of annoyance again to queue when you had bothered to book. Back to Shackfuyu... Not a single person queuing and a haven of peace

First things first – these are perhaps the worst food photos on the internet. I’m not sure what happened – it was fairly dark, I was on my third (delicious) yuzu margarita and I was rushing due to the usual time pressure when you have two hungry friends chomping at the bit whilst staring at a table of delicious delicacies
 but still, my apologies.

The scene of said photo massacre was Shackfuyu on Soho’s Old Compton Street, little sister of ramen gods Bone Daddies and bun heroes Flesh & Buns. The premise is Japanese street food, or little bits and pieces of what’s hot in Japan right now, and although it feels pretty permanent it’s touted as a pop-up.

They don’t take bookings (yawn), and I was uncharacteristically early, so was shunted downstairs into a tiny dark basement they called ‘the bar’.. aka waiting area for incomplete parties so they don’t infringe on lucrative table space. I just had time for my first yuzu delight before the others turned up, and we were taken to our table.

The menu is fairly compact, with about 15 dishes of various sizes ranging from ÂŁ2.50 to ÂŁ12.50. We ordered a couple each plus one extra which was the perfect amount, and they were all extremely good. Yuzu margaritas and cherry gimlets (served in little bottles) were the ideal complement.

Beef picanha is a cut that sits on top of the rump and is tender and tasty. Shackfuyu serves it with kimchee butter which is salty with a hint of spice and an excellent friend for the beef.

Prawn toast masquerading as okonomiyaki is a cross between the prawn toast we know and love, and a savoury Japanese pancake. It has bonito (dried fish) flakes on top which shimmer from the heat of the toast – kind of creepy but also pretty cool. It’s an unusual dish, and one that I could’ve devoured multiple times over.

The Korean wings were another highlight, spicy and tangy with a bit of crunch from sesame seeds, and the cauliflower and aubergine dishes were also great. Hot stone rice was average – tasty, just not on a par with its menu buddies.

They serve one dessert which is kinako French toast with green tea soft serve ice cream – innovative for sure, but be aware that one is enough for three! The toast is sweet, soft in the middle with a perfect crisp fried outside. The ice cream tastes to me like fake American chocolate – not sure of the reason for this, but I’m not keen on green tea anyway so maybe that’s why. But the toast is fabulous.

It was about £120 for three of us, including a few cocktails – not the cheapest but it was really lovely food. I’m not sure how long it’s there but it’s definitely worth a go.

Shackfuyu - Intriguing and Unusual Japanese Comfort food in Soho

There are two ways of avoiding the queues at ‘no reservation’ restaurant hot spots in Soho:

The first is all about timing. Either go before it opens and be one of those people standing outside a closed restaurant at 5:30 pm or go around 9:30 to 10 pm because most people in London like to have dinner around 8 pm (I've become one of them!)

The second way (and my personal favourite) is to wander around Soho and hit up all the places the people either forgot about or just don’t even know about.

So while implementing my second method, I came across Shackfuyu – brought to you by the Bone Daddies gang (also responsible for Flesh & Buns). It serves up Japanese fusion food and has a rather interesting menu.

I don’t if it's because it's pretty much brand spanking new (just a couple of weeks old) or because it's on a quieter side of Old Compton street - But it was half empty when we went – which was brilliant. We just walked right in at 7:30 pm on a Saturday evening, got a great table with fantastic service, and got to have some comfort food with most intriguing flavours I’ve had in a while.

The menu looks fantastic though I couldn't understand half of all the various Japanese ingredients in it – our server explained everything to us and pointed me to the dishes that would suit my low-spice request. My stomach has gone on a strike against anything spicy so I was bit limited when trying out the menu. (Warning: most of the stuff is spicy - practically everything has chilli in it).

Verdict:

I loved the creamy Mentaiko Mac n Cheese with a dollop of fish roe.

The silky Miso Aubergine is a totally must order dish.

Perfectly cooked Beef Picanha cooked Kimchee Butter and paired with pickled onions was a winner.

And my favourite was the okonomiyaki a.k.a. fried prawn toast drizzled with sweet mayo and teriyaki sauce and dressed with quivering slivers of seaweed flakes.

The yellow tail sashimi tostada with avocado shiso was less successful and rather insubstantial for me.

The cauliflower in orange miso ponzu were perfectly cooked though I found the orange taste paired with cauliflower a bit odd.

And the highlight was the sole dessert on the menu: the most decadent of French Toasts imaginable. A gigantic portion of Brioche bread drenched in butter and syrup served with Green Tea ice cream – you have to get this to share. I tried to finish it on my own and was a bit defeated....but not fully - I totally want to go again just to have it!

After the slurping success of Bone Daddies comes an innovative off-shoot in the form of Shackfuyu, the very embodiment of what a pop up should be. This Old Compton Street hideaway offers up classic dishes with a Japanese twist, such as miso mac 'n' cheese and the intriguing 'prawn toast masquerading as okonomiyaki' but the menu changes almost weekly. Translated from the Japanese for 'winter shack', Bone Daddies and Flesh & Buns creator Ross Shonhan brings us Shackfuyu from this winter to next but here's hoping it stays much longer than that.

Christina and I settled ourselves with a glass of wine and scanned the exciting menu, finally plumping for yellowtail sashimi tostada with avocado shisho, the Mentaiko mac and cheese with bacon and the oh so appetising 'cock scratchings' (also featured as an extra in the Bone Daddies ramen), the beef picanha with kimchee tare butter, cooked in the big stone pizza oven inherited from the site's previous owner and the prawn toast masquerading as okonomiyaki which quite alarmingly moved as if alive on the plate:

So some classic Britain and European dishes undergo an Asian makeover and quite frankly come out better for it. The experiment pays off, the ingredient combinations feel fresh and inventive. Four small plates was surprisingly enough to between two people, with a Gelupo sized hole left for London's best ice cream a short stroll away.

The self-styled rock n roll vibe permeates throughout the whole place. Leather booths, dimmed lighting and even a green tea ice cream making machine feature, with cameo roles from gorgeous crockery, Staub cast iron dishes and delicious house yuzu mayonnaise.

It's the first time in a while I've come away with a really excited spring in my step. No reservations (as you might expect) but truly worth the risk - and despite the deceptive exterior is rather cavernous so waiting times are minimal - I urge you to visit ASAP. You have until next winter... Go, go, go!

Chef and restauranteur Ross Shonhan has already made a name for himself playfully serving his mix of East-meets-West fusion food at hot spots Bone Daddies and Flesh & Buns. Add to his legacy the recently opened Shackfuyu which is already well on its way to being a triumph.

Translating literally as a "Winter Shack", it has already provided a safe haven for numerous patrons looking for comfort from the cold and will do so for the next 12 months as it settles into trendy SOHO. With a menu dominated by Japanese soul and comfort food with a contemporary twist, the meal will leave you craving for more and realising that a year may not be long enough.

On a night where I worked my way through the entire menu, I can safely say that Shackfuyu has lived up to the reputation inherited by being a Shonhan establishment - dishes were creative and delicious with some experimental flavour combinations proving to be real winners.

Highlights of the night were the USDA beef picanha with kimchee tare butter, korean fried wings and hand dived roasted scallop with chilli miso butter though the mentaiko mac and cheese with bacon & cock scratchings and prawn toast masquerading as okonomiyaki should also not be missed.

But above all, the now almost infamous kinako french toast served with matcha soft serve ice cream reigns supreme and is worth the trip to Shackfuyu alone. Saturated with delicious sweetened egg, it is seriously mind-blowing and for me, last meal worthy. Do. Not. Miss. This.

Another establishment, another triumph for the Bone Daddies brand serving wicked comfort food in trendy a relaxed environment. Worth checking out but go before 7 to guarantee a table.

After all that Tequila, it was time for some late night bites in Soho, and Clerkenwell Boy's Instagram sent us in the direction of Bone Daddies' one-year "popup" Shackfuyu on Old Compton Street.

Shackfuyu (translating to Winter Shack) has temporarily taken over the old Made In Italy site next door to Bincho, and the interiors have not changed too dramatically, with the pizza oven still in use sitting centre stage.

The menu, set to change roughly once a month I believe, is a list of small plates followed by a central meaty number, currently 200g of USDA Beef Picanha with Kimchee Tare Butter. You're going to want to eat pretty much everything, so go hungry.

Here's what I highly recommend:

- Roasted Beets, Shiso, Avocado

- Mentaiko Mac'N'Cheese, Cock Scratchings

- Beef Hot Stone Rice

And here are some more good-looking plates from CB's Instagram feed:

- Yellow Tail Sashimi Tostada, Avocado Shiso

- Prawn Toast Masquerading as Okonomiyaki

- Hand Dived Roasted Scallop with Spiced Miso Butter

- Fried Potatoes with Japanese Curry Sauce

- Kinako French Toast with Green Tea Soft Serve

The magnificent USDA Beef was unsurprisingly the star of the show, but the outstanding (and generous) portion of sticky Beef Hot Stone Rice threatened to steal it. I could happily eat those two dishes several times a week. The Mentaiko (Pollock & Cod Roe) makes for an unusual mac'n'cheese topping along with the ever-enticing "Cock Scratchings" but don't be put off - it's one tasty dish. We were unconvinced by the Green Tea ice cream, but I'm told it comes in to its own once paired with the Kinako French Toast

In general, the Shackfuyu dishes are very reasonably priced so you can get yourself a really good spread without breaking the bank, unless you start ordering Koshihikari Echigo beers at ÂŁ10.20 a pop. They've hit the ground running with a cracking opening menu, so get along quickly before it changes!

We managed to sneak in here during their 2-day soft launch and it was well worth the 45 min wait. They have a separate bar area so there was none of that waiting in the cold business as is the case with most no-reservation restaurants. They have an interesting drinks selection with a few japanese beers I hadn't seen before.

Now usually when I go out to eat, there will be a couple of dishes that I love and the others will be just mediocre but I genuinely enjoyed every dish here. They seem to have spent plenty of time to develop all the dishes properly (which is great for my belly)!

We especially enjoyed the 'prawn toast okinomiyaki', the bread was crisp, the prawns juicy and the toppings brought the dish together. Another fav is the cleverly named Mac and cheese with 'cock scratchings', really well seasoned and just the right amount of cheesiness without it being too sickly. I ordered a 'miso aubergine with bubu arare' which was so delicious and not too sweet (which can be the case sometimes with this dish). The bubu arare bit is crispy bits of puffed rice (similar to rice crispies) sprinkled on top. Even my bf who doesn't like aubergine enjoyed it.

Remember to leave room for dessert, only one option of French toast with green tea ice cream which comes from their own soft serve machine (must ask for one for Xmas). It's big enough to share between 2 but you may want to order extra ice cream.

Good food, good sake, good vibes. Friendly service. Sadly we can't have the table for long, but that's fine cos others need to be able to enjoy this establishment. We had most of the items on the Izakaya section of the menu. The pulled lamb, scallops, beef tataki were the stars. Their Shack-fuyu sake is enjoyable. Highly recommended. Make reservations!

The food was amazing, everything we had was delicious although like everyone else I’d recommend the French toast. The Service unfortunately did let the score down. It was busy but all of the servers were incredibly grumpy and when we asked for advice could barely be bothered to talk to us. It didn’t spoil our meal as it was so good but it’s a shame that I’ve seen many other reviews like this. I do understand it is busy but it’s also a central London restaurant it’s going to be busy, a smile doesn’t hurt! Anyway I would still go back because the food was worth it!

Rainy London afternoon for a late lunch. Not crowded - I love this. Our waiter was both entertaining and efficient. We both chose the express lunch. I had Korean chicken wings, salmon and the famous French toast for dessert. If you’re in a hurry, you get hot, delicious food quickly. The chicken wings were finger-licking good and so tender. The salmon was next level. The skin was crispy and there was this lovely salt which lifted the whole thing, and the aubergines were some of the best I’ve ever had. This was served with a sticky rice and washed down with a lovely white wine. Ok that French toast and matcha soft serve are worth the price of admission by themselves. 10/10 could not and would not want to fault anything and would definitely go again. *chef’s kiss*

I visited Shack fuyu as it seemed quite popular. However it didn’t meet the expectations. First of all the waiter seemed quite strict as we ordered, and he prompt us to not add another plate saying it was a lot and doing the characteristic movement of “cutđŸ‘‹đŸŒâ€ and actually remove one more. Thankfully we didn’t remove but we didn’t add the plate we were going to, and at the end it wasn’t enough for us as we haven’t eaten anything else all day and we were waiting for our dinner. I was okay but my boyfriend wasn’t, and the kitchen had already closed. Bad advice from his behalf. Despite that, the food was not something to die for, the buns were the best of all, I personally liked the tuna tacos and the prawn toast as well. The chicken sando though had a sauce that was awful and very sticky and heavy, it ruined the whole dish. The dessert was totally worth the hype. The ambience was a bit hectic and at the table we were seating we could see the full garbage bin and food on the floor. Also the waiter after stuffing his hand into the bin he proceeded with bringing us our drinks which was not nice to see nor to experience. We could also see our drinks waiting at the bar for like 10 minutes and their ice melting. Overall it was a nice restaurant but I will not visit it again, maybe only for its dessert. It surely needs many improvements.

Recommended! Must haves include their wings and French toast! Service was fast and speedy, Kudos to the staff as we were in a big group! Atmosphere was nice - it's centrally located and lots of other customers also enjoying their meal. They have a theatre menu too that we've had before - convenient if you're seeing The Cursed Child nearby!

We came here just for dessert but we will definitely be back for dinner or lunch one day. The French toast with match ice cream is sublime, I would definitely recommend coming to try it. We came again and got the prawn Sando too which was lovely and crunchy. It is a shame that the restaurant is super hot and it smells outside.

Fun atmosphere, good food and patient service. If you’re in Soho and looking for good eats try Shack-Fuyu Soho. You can share small plates or have a large plate all to yourself either way they won’t disappoint. If you have a large party be sure to call ahead it’s a small space.

Decent food in general. The edamame was surprisingly very nice - we tried the one with BBQ chilli and I would highly recommend trying it. I ordered the chicken katsu sando which was very nice (sorry forgot to take the photo) Squid and chicken wings were fine. The dessert was fine and would have preferred it without the matcha ice-cream actually. Drinks were not that great.

We recently visited Shack-Fuyu, part of the Bone Daddies group. It has a good selection of small and large plates and a fantastic selection of sakes. I’ve been here a few times and it never disappoints. The food is outstanding. They take Asian fusion to another level without compromising on quality. My favourite dish here is the Kinako French toast with matcha ice-cream, there have been several occasions where I’ve had dinner with friends nearby and insisted on going here for dessert. It gets incredibly busy, and it can sometimes be difficult to grab a server’s attention, but when you do, they’re friendly and always willing to talk you through the menu. Would highly recommend.

Outstanding food. Service was fast (though too fast at one point when my cocktail was spilled over the table and I wasn't offered another one!) and the express pre theatre menu gave us plenty of time to eat. French toast was to die for and every dish was perfect. Highly recommend.

Our waiter was truly wonderful, very attentive and made sure we were okay for the whole night. We had the Bao buns and wings to start - absolutely glorious. The food is so fresh and flavourful. We then had the rabbit curry which we weren’t that impressed with but everything was good quality. Obviously had to have the French toast which is always so tasty. Must say that the best part of this place is the small plates and the dessert.
