intimate dining space and a delicate, quail egg truffle raviolo begs to be eaten in one swift bite. At Schwa in Chicago, chef Michael Carlson keeps it casual and treats guests like family, no matter how exclusive and artistically outstanding the food and restaurant may seem. Lovely restaurant (and bar downstairs). Food was all very delicious but I felt it was overpriced for tapas. Generally when eating out you’re in a couple, or an even group so I don’t understand why restaurants persist on tapas portions for 3, meaning we had to order 2 of everything. The courgette flowers were £5.25 each which was daylight robbery.

Really innovative tapas with amazing flavours. Went there for lunch. Didn’t feel badly priced for the excellent experience and atmosphere.
Been to Ember Yard a number of times since their grand opening earlier in the year, and as they've found their footing the quality of the food has gone up. Getting a table in the evening is always a bit of a challenge, but there's more space to breathe during lunch times, and service doesn't feel quite so rushed then.

Go if you like a bit of smoke to your meal, as most dishes have some element of charcoal grilling involved. All the tapas dishes are worth a try, including the grilled flat bread as well as the goat cheese stuffed courgette flowers, and for seafood lovers the octopus is especially good. Leave some room also for dessert!

The restaurant is super cozy ! And the waitresses are super kind !
But we can't deny the fact that the owner of the restaurant is super stingy !
Every guest had to order 3 platers and 1 appetizer and we're still hungry ! ( the food is super delicious tho)
Paid 50£ per guest , which is really huge for the poor quantities that we received :)

Went here for dinner last night with a good friend. This was among the restaurants on my list for this London visit. I've read good reviews about this place which encouraged me to try it.

My friend booked a table for us a week earlier to be on the safe side. It was a smart move because the place was packed when we were there. It showed how popular this outlet is. It is of decent size for an outlet in Soho. The interiors were tastefully done. The use of natural elements like dark wood brought warmth to the place while the low lighting and the overall design gave it a touch of sophistication. This created a relaxed yet lively vibe.

Service was excellent - from the warm greetings to order taking and serving food to bill payment. The staffs were cordial and attentive. The one who served us explained the concept really well and recommended getting 2-3 items per person. There was no pressure to quickly place order. We took our time deciding in between trading personal stories. Each time we needed something, it was very easy to call the staffs' attention. Ember Yard deserved a high mark for service speed and quality.

The food portions are in tapas style so we decided to each get three dishes and share. My friend ordered courgette flower stuffed with goat's cheese, grilled octopus with some greens and chargrilled iberico presa while I went for smoked haddock croquetas, squid ink paella and chargrilled iberico pork ribs.

I did not try the courgette flower but my friend said it had nice tang-sweet combination from the goat's cheese and honey drizzle. The croquetas were perfect. I loved the light crunch from the outer shell and the soft, moist inside. The taste of smoked haddock came out beautifully from the dish. The grilled octopus was soft and tasty and complemented well by the mint purée. The paella was delicious. I love paella negra so it was not a surprise that I ordered this. Ember Yard's version ranked highly on my list. The iberico presa was another beautifully prepared dish - tender, moist and flavourful. The accompanying dip enhanced the flavour of the meat. Lastly, the iberico pork ribs was the highlight of the meal. The meat was so soft that it falls off the bone. It was so juicy that it fills your mouth with sweet, bbq flavour. It was so delicious that you will wish you had two portions. The purée and sage on the same plate were equally nice. It was a genius pairing.

The reviews were right. This is indeed a place that everyone should try. Warm ambiance, superb service and impressive dishes; Ember Yard has it all.

Beautiful place with beautiful food. I used to go all the time to the original one, Salt Yard, on Goodge Street and was a little concerned that with all of the additions to the chain that the quality could have dropped, but every bite was delicious. The same small Italian/Spanish inspired tapa dishes bursting with flavour and lots of textures that compliment each other and staff who know the menu. The courgette flowers had a thicker batter and a touch more honey than I had remembered from the original but were still tasty.

The ambience is amazing, as well as the friendly service.
Great experience. Prices in good relation with the quality and location.
Nice place to revisit next time in London.

So, Ember Yard was never even on my radar. I will be honest and say that I had never heard of it before. You may sigh in disgust, but contrary to popular belief, us bloggers don’t know everything. We tend to go by what is in the vicinity of where we are at the time and also the recommendations from our friends. This was one of those Saturdays when we were out and about and needed somewhere to eat. My friend suggested Ember Yard in Soho. Of course I jumped on google to see what the ku was, but it was always my intention to say a big yes as this particular friend knows good food.

So, Ember Yard was never even on my radar. I will be honest and say that I had never heard of it before. You may sigh in digust, but contrary to popular belief, us bloggers don't know everything.

We trekked from Covent Garden to Soho. En route we booked online to ensure a table. Luckily we were any early sitting, so we got a table. I was really intrigued, I am a sucker for the new. Even google could not prepare me for this experience.

So, to break it down, its kind of like an Italian and Spanish tapas experience. Its totes about sharing and they have a great jamon and queso selection (sorry I don't know the Italian equivalent). Anyway, its bordering on formal. It is obviously filled with a grown up and more discerning diner. The price reflects that with it being more than average. Put it this way, a packet of pimento padron can be purchased for a couple of quid a Brindisa at London Bridge. Here, you pay £5.50 for half a packet. What I will say is that because they were in season you did get the odd spicy one which is always a good thing, so they are forgiven.

So the pimento padron was part of the experience and we also opted for chargrilled Iberico pork ribs with quince glaze, summer squash and sage. There was also some chargrilled Beef flat iron with spiced aubergine, borlotti beans and smoked yoghurt. Of course, I love me some mushrooms, so there was wood roasted portobello mushrooms with chilli, garlic and manchego cheese. Lush.

Ember Yard has a fantastic menu. It is advised to order carerfully as each dish can compliment eachother perfectly, or just be a mish mash of nonsense. Listen to the service team and their suggestions. For us, we knew what we wanted. Pranvera had been here before and I see myself as a wee Italian/Spanish foodie connoisseur having frequented such establishments locally and in their natural habitat.

If you are around Soho for the theatre or some other special occasion, I highly recommend a visit to Ember Yard. Obvs if you got the dollars to be spending for adhoc visits, then again, do it! I thoroughly enjoyed it and was pleasantly surprised by this new spot. Thank you Miss PranDiva.

Ordered a tonne of small plates to share and had no complaints whatsoever. Highlights were all the chargrilled meats. Each one was perfectly seared and cooked just perfect. The Iberico pork ribs were falling off the bone and had a sweet and sour sticky coating. I loved the portobello mushrooms that came with the grilled chicken thigh, they were soaked with flavour. The croquettes were really good and they were enhanced by the brown crab aioli and we almost licked the platter clean. The chargrilled octopus was tremendously tender and not overcooked.

The hostess is really good here and she suggested some good wines for us. Love this place! Good vibe, good service, good food.

Ember Yard is part of Salt Yard Group, and the idea behind Ember Yard is that everything is cooked with charcoal.  The menu is made up of small plates; it’s tapas but with a delightful twist, fusing both Spanish and Italian cuisine. It’s a perfect spot for large groups – the set menu makes every oh-so-simple.  No debate about which to try, plus it makes splitting the bill nice and easy.

The Basque country in northern Spain has a tradition of BBQ meat and this is where Ember Yard draws most of its inspiration from. Mixed with dishes from around Spain and Italy; it's not very a British restaurant, but a very London one. Start with a platter of cheeses and ham, perhaps some olives, move onto a couple of tapas, perhaps Smoked Bream Carpaccio or Quince Glazed Ibérico Pork Ribs, follow up with Gloucester Old Spot Pork Belly cooked over Applewood and Oak charcoal, and wash it all down with a Spanish red or perhaps a cocktail.

A bit pricey but such amazing flavours. We absolutely loved it. MUST try their octopus - oh so tender and delicious. Also loved their pork slider (not sure if it was special of the day or not) but it was so beautiful - the brioche bun was heavenly, the pork such intense flavour, and it was all brought together perfectly by aromatic truffle mayo. SO GOOD!

No surprise this restaurant has got good reviews from its customers. I presumed it was an Italian restaurant initially but once I checked in I found out that it's Spanish. Gladly it was my first time in a Spanish restaurant.
The ambience was good and the staff welcomed me with a warm, gentle smile and allocated me a table in a minute. The only difficulty for me was pronouncing or remembering the name of the dishes. I tried different beers, pork starter which has been curated for 5 years, marinated fish, potatoes, cheese buns and the pork rib. I loved everything and I'm sure I would visit the restaurant again.

Having visited Opera Tavern which was really enjoyable we decided to go and try Ember Yard. I enjoy tapas because you can order many dishes to share, having said that it seems like we always over order when we have tapas and the staff step in and suggest we stop.

The restaurant is conveniently located in Soho. We didn't book a table in advance because it was a last minute decision to visit here.

The menu has a range of options from vegetables to meat and fish. I think we almost ordered the whole menu! Everything sounded so tempting.

We ordered several dishes from the meat section, and of course this included the signature grilled iberico presa with whipped jamon butter. The meat was cooked to medium rare, although I did find the edges of some pieces slightly tough and dry. The creamy butter with cured ham worked really well, the saltiness in the ham wasn't overpowering.

Josper roasted corn fed chicken leg with morcilla, ajo blanco and smoked almond was a very cute little dish. A baby sized chicken leg with almond and black pudding. At first we were trying to guess what the "black pieces" were, and asked the staff. I'm not a huge fan of black pudding, but surprisingly I really liked it. The chicken was well cooked, very soft and and the skin was crispy.

Smoked and grilled beef onglet with shallots cooked in embers and pickled bonemarrow. The beef was cooked perfectly to medium rare and very juicy, but we thought it was slightly under seasoned.

From the bar snacks menu we chose the salt marsh lamb pincho with peas and buttermilk. The skewer of lamb wasn't very tender, and I found the buttermilk bland, I would have preferred a slightly thicker and richer sauce to go with it.

Moving onto the fish options, we wanted to order the chargrilled cuttlefish but this wasn't available. Instead we ordered the steamed and chargrilled octopus with pepperonata and mojo verde alioli. I think this is one of my favourite dishes because the octopus was really soft and tender. It was served on a bed of super sweet red peppers.

We also ordered two other fish dishes, the smoked and grilled Cornish mackerel with fennel escabeche and saffron alioli, and the other was smoked and grilled salmon with crispy kale and horseradish velouté. Both dishes were cooked nicely and the fish wasn't dry at all.

Vegetables we went for the chargrilled baby gem lettuce and asparagus with peas, broad beans and lemon. I really enjoyed this it was light and refreshing and tangy! Definitely a great dish for the summer. Making sure we fulfil our five a day we also ordered the chargrilled cauliflower with yogurt and cumin dressing and sumac. Never thought of pairing cauliflower with yogurt, it worked well.

After sharing nine dishes we still had room for dessert, I would argue it's a different stomach. We shared the burnt honey semifreddo with honeycomb and caramelised clementines. The semifreddo was fluffy, soft and velvety. The highlight for me was the honeycomb which was crunchy and had a very strong honey taste which worked well with the tangy clementines.

Overall it was a very enjoyable meal. Lots of healthy options to choose from and it's great for those who like to share and try a little bit of everything. Price range is a little expensive for some of the dishes as the portion sizes are small, but the quality of the food is good.

Adorable setting in Soho with the best burger in town. Service was attentive and knowledgeable Have been looking forward to trying Ember Yard  since the opening but had to cancel due to travel a couple of times. Georgia who works with me got me very excited during our train ride yesterday telling me her “must eats”. I was also excited because we had an amazing meal at their sister restaurant Dehesa ( http://www.dehesa.co.uk/ ) a couple of months ago. The place is casual and buzzy. Very cute. The service was also great. Our waiter (who works in the summers as a private boat skipper) knew the menu inside out and was passionate about it. And we drilled him with questions and he answered each and every one in detail. What we ate: Smoked Chorizo skewer with saffron alioli:  from the bar menu. Very tasty chorizo, well grilled with creamy alioli. Enough said. Grilled ibérico pork with whipped jamón butter:  both Michael from the Gym and my friend G from work told me this was amazing. Ember Yard, Salt Yard Group’s fourth London venture, is centred around Italian and Spanish tapas and grilled dishes in particular. Located on the north end of Berwick St, it’s a fairly cosy yet airy affair defined by smooth dark woods, shiny glass, and friendly smiling staff. We made it in for the soft open (and the 50% off food deal) but normally prices range from £5-9 for starters and £8-12 for mains with the sharing plates being considerably more. Keep in mind this is tapas-style so you’ll need to budget for 2-3 dishes per person which lessens the value for money proposition a bit.

Ember Yard is a new restaurant from the Salt Yard Group who also run popular small plate inspired eateries Salt Yard, Dehesa and Opera Tavern in London.  The latest venture is just off Oxford Street on Berwick Street and occupies a large space with a downstairs bar. The inspiration for Ember Yard is taken from Spanish and Italian methods of cooking over charcoal. This is reflected by the majority of the dishes on the menu which are cooked on a custom built charcoal fired grill. I visited alone during the first week of its soft launch and was seated at the chefs counter which provided me first hand insight into the busy workings of the kitchen.  The kitchen was very busy serving up plate after plate of fine looking dishes, this aided me in my selection as I could see the dishes as they left the pass before ordering!  The service was smoothly overseen and controlled by Ben Tish, Chef director of the Salt Yard Group, impressive given that it was only the third night since opening.  We fir

I have a confession. My blog has a big fat Salt Yard gap in it. No, I have never been to Salt Yard, Dehesa, or, most shockingly, Opera Tavern. I thought that I had a Salt Yard jinx and I was fully expecting this visit to be derailed by some sort of crisis, but clearly the Salt Yard hex has been lifted and I will shortly be making my way to Opera Tavern, for their legendary Iberico pork burger. I expect that the ember reference is something to do with the fact that there is a charcoal grill and that it is the main event. Eight out of ten of the fish/meat dishes on the menu had the word chargrilled in them. And I know of no other place where they tell you what type of wood they are using in their grill. This week, we will mostly be using Hazel and Silver Birch. And single species charcoal and wood. Next, they will be telling me from which forest it was gathered....

Ember Yard differentiates itself from the three other members of the Salt Yard Group by specialising in grilled food cooked over charcoal. The wood for the charcoal is varied to match the seasonality of the food being served so, for example in late summer they were using Sweet Chestnut and Plum. Of course that necessitated ordering a number of dishes from the grill. In the interests of research of course.

Dinner With Jo

Hollywood’s favourite pirate Johnny Depp once said, “I pretty much try to stay in a constant state of confusion just because of the expression it leaves on my face.” If that is the case then he should dine every night at Ember Yard, the fourth restaurant to be born from the Salt Yard group, for confused is very much how I felt after eating there on Sunday night.

Most dishes were so lovely that I felt a genuine pang of sadness when they were nearing their end, whilst the odd few were almost offensive.

The absolute winners were grilled flatbread with honey, thyme and smoked butter, spicy chicken wings with romesco, courgette flowers stuffed with goats cheese and drizzled with honey, and smoked chicken liver pate on crostini with pickled mushrooms. Concern over carb intake flew out the window more quickly than a teenage girl flocks to Johnny Depp once I got a whiff of the sweet thyme flatbread; cutlery was far too much of a barrier between me and the chicken when it came to the spicy wings; hitting the goats cheese inside the courgette flower was akin to opening a budget secret santa present to find a diamond encrusted Cartier watch, and the chicken liver pate on crostini was perfect: satisfying, rich, salty and crunchy.

I took real offence to the smoked bream carpaccio, in fact I don’t want to discuss it for fear of feeling a bit sick. It smelt and tasted too fishy and didn’t taste right smoked.

The next dishes were pretty good and saved the day; lamb burger with aubergine, smoked ricotta gnocchi gratin with roasted squash, and grilled salmon with kale and horseradish veloute.

Dessert was another winner; apple pannacotta with vanilla biscuit and dark chocolate sorbet. It was an excellent portion size (nobody wants to be squeezed through the door upon exiting and have to be rolled home) and it sparked a unanimous “ahh that’s so good” from the table.

As is probably the way with many tapas restaurants, some dishes you win, some you lose. If you’re happy taking such chances then Ember Yard is for you. £40 per head (with wine), an aesthetically pleasing wine cellar to look at, and very friendly and efficient service.

I had heard mixed reviews about Ember Yard from a friend - though I am unclear as to why.I thought the service was solid if not spectacular (though when asked if a dish was good the waitress did reply with blunt honesty that she thought there were much better things on the menu and advised me to try those - which was refreshing). The food was absolutely knock out: the Iberico Presa was sumptuous and the Iberico chips with chorizo ketchup were the stuff that dreams are made of.  There wasn't a weak dish on the menu in my opinion and I feel like we tried most of it (though not any mains). The wine list had a good mix on offer, though would have liked some descriptions on the menu as I am no connoisseur.  And the ambience even on a Sunday evening was lively without being overbearing. All in all it was fairly priced for the quality and a great opportunity to share lots of things with friends without the dishes being too fiddly.  I will certainly return.

Ember Yard..

First thing I have to say is that I love Tapas..
And I've been living in San Sebastian for a while so I'm pretty picky with them.. ;)

Beautiful location and design of the place.
Simple and neat as every tapas place has to be.

First thing you should do when you sit down is to choose a good bottle of red wine..
Why red? Cause checking out the menu a good red wine will pair with most of the plates on the menu and will make you enjoy them more!

The prices are not too cheap I have to say. But you know, I got there to try the best so I got all the best things on the menu as always.

Highlights of the night were the:
- Grilled Ibérico Presa with Whipped Jamón Butter
- Spiced Lamb Burger with Piquillo, Aubergine and Garrotxa
- Steamed and Chargrilled Octopus with Pepperonata and Mojo Verde Alioli
- Pork Belly (Quite Expensive but very good)

What's so different from a "Barrafina" or a "Jose"?
Well, it's mostly about the strong flavour of the dishes.
At Ember Yard most of the plates are very tasty and powerful.

So as well you get full very easily.

At Barrafina I could eat just for hours without getting full.. Is not a lack at all, is just a different way how to see tapas!
At Jose I just eat up drinking more wine than tapas but well that's why is so interesting to try different places! So you can choose for the one that suits you in the best of the ways!

So summarising..
I've ended up spending around 50£ at Ember Yard.. But I've enjoyed the food, the drinks and the atmosphere!

I will probably go back!

Although the decor was nothing special, the aromatic smells and very friendly staff made Ember Yard one of the most warm-fuzzy restraunt I have ever been to. The restraunt is neatly spaced and gets very busy during lunch times which is when we visited.

Firstly the food there is superb but with a few flaws imo. The proportion sizes are relatively small so if you're hungry, Ember Yard probably wont be the best value restraunt for a feed. The dishes that stood out included the sea trout, buttersquash with goat's curd and courgette flower. Even though the courgette flower is only 1 proportion at 4.5 pounds each (which is ludicrous!) it had one of the best texture that was fluffy crispy outside and firm in the inside, with running honey covering it. The iberico presca was alright but lacked flavour whilst the lamb was similarly average. I didnt get to try any of the tapas but apparently they are very tasty.

Overall I would recommend peeps travelling around Soho to give Ember Yard a try. Its nice and cozy, and the food comes in small proportions. It probably lacks a bit of finesse in terms of flavour but all the dishes we tried had very good balance.

A dear friend of mine described the food here as the best she'd ever eaten and I have to admit, the tapas was absolutely incredible.

I'm salivating all over my computer so I'll keep it as brief as possible: besides the wonderful food, the cocktails are very, very good but with a price tag to match.

The portions are generous. they have a bar downstairs that is very attractive and pleasant looking. The interiors have been done stylishly and i recommend the restaurant.

The food here is amazing or i must say sensational.
They prepare food over wood and coal and that is amazing. I had Chivory which was accompanied by sweet sauce which was made by pomegranate and according to me it was the best dish ever.
The menu that these guys will be giving is going to be tapas style so you are going to love it.
The service was good but it was little messy because there was a lot of people there.

The new sister restaurant from the Salt Yard group. Completely different menu from Salt Yard, and the food was amazing! In particular the Grilled Mahon with Honey and Baked Plum, which would be any scoffer’s heaven.

If you have been to Salt Yard, and enjoyed I would definitely recommend this place, and can imagine soon enough it will get just as busy.

The service was great, but it was quiet. I'd be keen to see if the standard of service is just as high, when busy.

This is a beautiful restaurant in the heart of soho, glowing out of the dark evening light like a golden glob of amber. Sumptuous light radiates from within and fills you with warmth like a hot cup of cider. The restaurant itself smells faintly of applewood, their burning material of choice this autumn season, and a flavour that features in your chargrilled and smokey tapas.

We were both amazed and relieved to hear they could seat us in the crowded restaurant that evening, as we arrived on a weekend without a reservation. The whole of the first floor was stuffed to the gills with happy, smiling diners, but fortunately there was room for us at the bar downstairs. One waitress took our coats as another took us to our seats. Yet another guided us through the drink list and the length of our culinary journey for the next two hours. The waitress was sweet and extremely well-informed on all that we would be drinking and eating. When we asked about the gin and tonic, she even offered to let us try a free glass of their homemade citrusy tonic (which was amazing even without the gin!)

The food was truly special, and we ordered up an array of meat and vegetarian tapas. The ribs were outstanding, tender, sweet and smokey without being chewy or too fatty. The parsnip fries were another highlight, served with cheese and honey. I think my favourite dish, however, was the chargrilled squash with goat cheese! The goat cheese was wonderfully peppered! I wasn't overly fond of the tomato and smoked almond salad (my friend's choice, not mine . . . she really enjoyed it, though.) The beef with chargrilled corn was wonderfully seasoned, though the meat could have stood to be a bit rarer for my taste. All of these courses went beautifully with the red wine we sipped at the recommendation of our wonderful server.

Overall, this was a fantastic dining experience: perfectly timed and a true pleasure to all of the senses! I can't wait to return for a cocktail night! Oh, and to try the burrata on aubergine!

I seriously love Ember Yard. My friends and I may have found our favourite group dinner spot in Soho. The Autumn menu is promising, but the strength of their menu definitely relies on the staple favourites. definitely in Service was great as usual, and our bill came out at a reasonable figure despite the multiple orders of delicious fare.

You MUST get the octopus with peperonata & mojo verde aioli, the Iberico presa, the burrata and the parsnip chips.

A slightly less common approach to tapas including Italian influences which is really refreshing. The food is fantastic and it was definitely one of the best meals out I have ever had in London. Definitely have to go back here soon.

Amazing. Even the lighting was just right. We ordered a large variety of dishes to share. From the squid to the mini burger, ribs to the lamb, everything was cooked just right. I had a lovely glass of wine with my meal as well as sparkling water. The waitresses were very attentive and professional. I would most definitely come here again, what a gem!

With clues in the name, there’s a focus on cooking over charcoal and wood with all their chargrilling and roasting. There was a wonderful light char to many of the beautiful dishes we tried (the perfect level of smokiness, never over-blackened or acrid). We ordered a lot, but one of my favourite was the chargrilled Iberico Presa (£8.75) with whipped salty Jamon butter (obviously more pig needed), blushing inside of the kind you can with this kind of pork, and very tender.

Other chargrilled dishes included the Salt Marsh Lamb with a slick of roasted aubergine and salsa verde (£6.50), and the octopus with perronata and a herby alioli (£8.75). The cod (£7.25) was smoked before its grilling, on top of braised cannellini beans, samphire, but maybe I missed the clams reading the menu now.

One of Salt Yard’s signatures is the courgette flowers stuffed with goats cheese and drizzled with honey (£7.95) – they are exactly the same here, which is perfect. From the other vegetable dishes, we had the parsnip buttermilk chips sprinkled with lots of manchego (£5.75) and the very cheesy gratin with lots of the smoked ricotta and Idiazabal cream on top of the root vegetables.

We tried some of the bar snacks too – some of the tiniest olives I’ve seen (£3), along with skewers of crispy brick-red chorizo (£2.50 each), perfect with the grilled flatbread (£3.25). This bread came with honey, thyme and smoked butter – an unusual and utterly delicious combination.

Chorizo really is one of the best Spanish exports, and they have even managed to turn some into ketchup here. It comes in a little pot alongside the chips (£4.50), which have to taste great if they are cooked in Iberico pork fat (probably even better than a beef dripping or goose fat chip). Just when we thought the stream of plates and slates had stopped, a couple of the little Basque burgers came (£6.25 each), with more of the Idiazabal cheese and the chorizo ketchup.

There’s a lot of photos for all the little plates. I’m always trying to shoot a little surreptitiously not to draw attention. But I needn’t have worried, as AA Gill sailed past at one point. I’m sure the terror he might strike was enough to distract from me and my trusty Canon.

Why Waste Annual Leave?

It was 3rd time lucky for me at this restaurant after two previous last minute attempts to book had left us with the dreaded response of "unfortunately we're fully booked at that time". Once had been a weeknight but at peak time and once had been a Saturday night at 6pm. This time, we were sensible enough to book ahead in good time and at 6pm when most are still hard at work. Was it worth the wait? Most definitely. This is some of the very best tapas-style food to be found in London. You don't need to be a Sherlock to spot some favourite ingredients from a mile off - goat's curd, honey, Iberico ham feature heavily on this innovative and creative menu.

We were tempted into ordering a couple of bar snacks and went for olives with goat's curd, orange and pistachios, which were delicious - I'm normally ambivalent about olives but this unusual combination of flavours worked really well together. We also ordered some Padron peppers - green peppers dipped in some salt. These were moreish and we finished the plate easily but if I had to skip substitute just one dish from my evening, it would probably be this - they were nice enough but perhaps less exciting than many other featured dishes.

We were advised to select between 2 - 3 tapas dishes per person if we were eating tapas and tonight, we went for a vegetarian-heavy selection. Their special of the night which was a butternut squash (beautifully charred at the edges) with goat's curd and sweet grapes, buttermilk parsnip chips with honey and manchego ease (we had died and gone to chip heaven) and the courgette flower. Courgette flowers are made on an individual basis so you order the number you want - these are essentially battered lightly, filled with goat's cheese and dipped in honey - absolutely divine! Who knew courgette and honey go so well together - mental note to self to take this key message home with me.

A little bit of meat and fish had to be thrown in for good measure plus what is tapas without pork? We went for Iberico presa with whipped Jamon butter. The pork was so perfectly tender and the butter was whipped as light as air with a very mild taste to complement the pork. We also had cuttlefish with roast pumpkin, in which I found the pumpkin spiced perfectly but found the cuttlefish a little bit on the chewy side....but....it was the first time I've tried cuttlefish so have nothing to compare it to and for all I know, this may be its normal texture.

Desserts were difficult to choose from - I went for the date and quince cake with muscovado ice cream, which was great. The ice cream is rich in flavour and creamy but I would suggest tasting the cake first as its subtle flavours may get lost in your mouth if you go heavy on the ice cream first.

Service was lovely if quite quick - we had been told about the 2 hour turnaround but even with an attempt to push things, we were in and out in 90 minutes. I perhaps would have wanted that extra half an hour and a little bit more pacing in between the dishes but now I'm really nit-picking. I'll definitely be back her to try all the things we just weren't able to squeeze in today.

There’s something so brilliant about tapas in winter in London, and I think that it has has something to do with it constantly raining in the city, and the subsequent juxtaposition of summery food, jumpy little servers and free-flowing booze of every kind. You see, tapas is not difficult to do well – at least in my perception.

Having said that, there’s tapas and there’s Tapas. La Tasca, though respectable and decent as a chain, is the former, whereas the latter is stealthily championed by a quietly brilliant few haunts, my personal favourite being Meson don Felipe, down at Waterloo. It’s not well written up by the folks who use Tripadvisor, but down forget that this website’s content is largely delivered by the bitter, clueless, those who think that sarcasm is the highest form of wit or ‘global travellers’ that write comments like “it’s not the same as in Spain”. No, it wouldn’t be, would it. Navarro’s, on Charlotte Street, is well-regarded too.

Anyway, there are a few more places to choose from if you’d wish a tapas restaurant to stand out (it’s great date food by the way) and a few of these restaurants are owned by the hoity-toity Salt Yard group, of Salt Yard (duh), Opera Tavern and Dehesa and fame (I was first alerted to the existence of Opera Tavern when I heard rumours of a pork burger with gooey Idiazabal cheese stirring up chaos from the gastronomically knowledgable all over town). Tapas is big business; a real money spinner if you studied a menu engineering module at uni like me, so coupled with London’s favourite mantra of ‘simple things done so well you’ll sell a kidney to have it’, Salt Yard would have done well to expand, and they did. Enter, if you will, Ember Yard, on Berwick Street in Soho. It’s practically on Oxford Street but don’t let that fool you.

Coming from someone who preaches ‘Authenticity’ for a living, I like my tapas restaurants to be proper divey – maybe because subconsciously it’s in keeping with Spain’s robust economy – but if you’re after chipped walls, Estrella everywhere and bright yellow and red washed walls, then you better keep on walking. Ember Yard, with tables and tapas bars spread over the basement and ground floors, is muted, classy and a far cry from customary chaos and wonderful disorder. You’re through the door and thrown into a den of deep woods, dark lighting, classy paintings, lanky wine glasses (I’m a massive glass freak now) and perfect service. I say that because tapas servers tend to be as crazy and colourful as the restaurant and just as open to interpretation; you’ll love their bounciness and rapid fire table touches or hate the inevitable frequency of smashes and the accompanying cheers as plates and glasses go flying. At Ember Yard, it’s like the waitresses (didn’t see a bloke all night) have been drinking gin all night. I’m just assuming that gin affects everyone like it does me, making one laid back, attentive, timely and respectful, obviously. Not 'way raw'.

I felt like getting a bit laid back, attentive, timely and respectful too so hit the cocktails. The list is concise – a few classics and a few originals, alas, light on the gin. We were both lusting after wine so one round was enough. A Cosmopolitan was well-constructed and thoughtful, however I was bowled over with the Ember & Ash, a mixologist’s equivalent to dark satin sheets and an aura of the mysterious – in layman’s terms – raisin rum, Pedro Ximénez and bourbon smoke. It’s served in a glass with a bespoke lid (glass whore time again) and I could lose myself in not just the taste, but by simply huffing whiskey. The wine list is well-ordered and just the right size (big enough to surprise, small enough to order from), but we found that a Tuscan Sangiovese was perfect for the plethora of food we had coming our way.

And what of the food! This is tapas – primary of the Spanish variety but expect a few Italian flavours to be thrown around too – crafted to perfection with a startlingly clinical attention to detail and exquisite presentation. No bowls of chorizo in red sauce here.

Ibérico pork rib and celeriac purée was as downtrodden as the tapas came, compelling you to put down the cutlery, get your lips out and gnaw away. They were sticky, blackened, and mahoosive. The lamb once again won me over; melty and smokey, served with aubergine. I hate to admit it but I may actually like lamb, after fifteen years of hurt. Chargrilled Cornish mackerel was served with a cuddly and hearty stew-like pool of mussel Escabeche, piquillo and sea purslane, and contrasted to our second fish choice of bream carpaccio with blood orange, almost like ceviche in it’s lightness and touchy presentation.

Salt Yard Group are somewhat known for their courgette flowers stuffed with goats cheese, so it would have been rude not to have a couple. There were the first dish to arrive and I could have nailed them all night. Me. And veg. You heard it here first. There was so much on the menu we had to ignore (part due to appetite part due to price – it’s not the cheapest tapas as you may expect) but everything looked orderable (?), even the aforementioned burgers – present on the menu here as well – were not quite enticing enough to make our distinguished shortlist.

Don’t you dare stop reading and think the story ends with great tapas. A plate of Spanish cheese (the waitress offered to bring it after the rest of the food – a touch I couldn’t not gush about) was generous to say the least – a couple of boards full of rosemary Manchego, Garrotxa, Torta de Barros and Treviso Blue. And quince. Grin! And then desserts, a bitter chocolate ganache with salted caramel ice cream which was just a little bit short of richness (suprising as everything is loaded with the most perfect tastes and textures), completely overshadowed by the unbelievable Caprini cheesecake, basking in the lavish richness of Amaretti and a delicious sharpness of orange. Not quite a JW Steakhouse cheesecake-beater, but the closest I have found in London.

We settled up and made to leave. The waitress cocked us and was over with our coats without missing a beat. For a restaurant with such a surprising and welcome attention to detail (pigs head beer taps, anyone?), I was somehow left wanting and was not sure at first why. It was the best food I have had in a while.

It hit me as I walked out of the restaurant, past the murmuring, sophisticated tables and discrete staff. Ember Yard is missing something meaningless but crucial – a certain emanation of ‘who gives a damn’ kind of chaos that lends itself so well to tapas. In this case, I think we’re missing the greasy tables, hastily wiped with blue roll and the vibe of an egregious guitar player banging out flamenco-riffed covers of Billy Jean. And the more I think of tapas in general, the inherent simplicity of the food – whether a plate costs five or ten quid, whether you are at La Tasca or Dehesa – that this atmosphere is what I was yearning for. Tumbling out of a still-packed restaurant (it was now gone ten on a Sunday night) into a rainy and, it has to be said, grotty street on Soho soon corrected any personal imbalance and incertitude of what is right or wrong. And seconds later, as my coat began to get sodden and my shoe started to leak, I came full circle realised that Ember Yard is special, incomparable, and worth a return where everything about it will earn my renewed surprise.

Food Over London

Combine great tapas of Spanish and Italian influence, insistence on great produce, throw in the latest trend du jour of smoking, add little seasoning, and you get Ember Yard, the latest opening from the dependable Salt Group.
Since last year, Opera Tavern, has been one of my favourite eateries and places to take new people to London. It is one of the few places that does the superlative Ibérico pork meat rather than just the jamon, and sits nicely in the pricey but not extortionate value range. Ember Yard is another step up from this adding another layer, a smokey one at that, to an already successful formula.
The upstairs is great, lively atmosphere, open kitchen with chefs shouting orders, long tables, waitresses darting around with slate served tapas. Downstairs is a bit more relaxed with a jamon carving bar, when I went service was a little slower down here, so if you are less time conscious you can simply enjoy the ambiance and make your way through the incredible cocktail list. Negroni with smoked campari & ice or the Ember & Ash - 'raisin infused rum, PX with bourbon smoke! According to 'Clerkenwell Boy', whose more than well acquainted with a negroni, it's 'dangerously drinkable - perfectly balanced by the subtle smoked ice, blow torched orange, and use of Antica formula...#LineThemUp'
The menu is a similar format to the other Salt Yard group restuarant, few snacks and cheese/hams on the front and Fish, Meat, and Veg dishes on the back. Now I've been back quite a few times, there is only a few things left on the menu yet to try, the majority.
From the 'Bar snacks' the anchovies are worth going for. Cold smoked, and to be eaten bones & all, a completely different flavour profile to what you would expect, brilliant, although it does divide opinion some on our table really didn't take to them at all. Such a shame, more for me, the joy of tapas and not being fussy! The chipirones (basically baby squid), are easily missed, I had to Google what this was, but are really moreish. Gordal olives with goats curd, orange and pistachio are a great and fresh combination, if only there was more. As for the ibérico pork fat chips I shouldn't need to say more except IBERICO PORK FAT CHIPS. These weren't allowed to settle on the table until almost inhaled by the table.
Large sharing plates is a fab idea, the eyes draw and immediately boggle on reading 'hot smoked old spot pork belly with basque cider, and smoked apple' completely overshadowing the 'Bistecca Fiorentina' (T-Bone steak). 'We are having that, no question'. Even for 3 of us there was a lot to go round, a large portion smothered in an incredible cider glaze. Old Spot is one of the fatty breeds, this was incredibly rich and juicy, those that think they can take down this beast on their own may have eyes bigger than their belly.
Onto the fish section. If I was an octopus I would be offended to be put in the 'Fish' part, they are very smart creatures, but so be it, they are also delicious. Prawns are dumb, I doubt they really care where they are, mislabelled or not.
The cuttlefish with pumpkin and n'duja is a standout dish, such punchy flavours. The smoked sea bream carpaccio with bergamot and bottarga was disappointing I was looking forwarded to this, slightly too much bergamot was overpowering, and by the time I came back after another dish it was a hostile takeover, completely overwhelming everything. The octopus however was perfectly cooked and tender paired with pepperonata and mojo verde aioli.
Don't think it will come as much of a suprise when I say if you were to only have one dish at Ember Yard it should be the Ibérico presa with the jamon butter. The butter so good I had to get a little pot of it to myself, those who know me know how much I love the yellow stuff (which is actually good for you). The presa is a flavoursome cut, cooked medium rare, something only really do with iberico due to it's breeding. With a nice char on the outside, it's a pork version of a good steak, like flat iron, it being from the shoulder region.
The iberico ribs are really tender and succulent, but the quinze glaze is slightly too sweet for my tastes, and the meat isn't as flavoursome as the presa. The basque beef slider is a beautiful few mouthfuls, not reaching the heights of the opera tavern foie gras and iberico one though!
Perfect for a group get together, a true test of a relationship 'sharing food', or a quick lunch. It's very easy to work your way through the menu, and thankfully their use of smoking isn't just jumping on a bandwagon but really brings certain dishes up to a different level.
Unashamedly, I'm very much a meat and fish person, except for kale, it's trendy didn't ya know, someone ordered the root veg roasted gratin, with smoked ricotta and Idiazabal cream. This is a really good, and a very rich dish, the smoked ricotta particularly stands out. The courgette flowers are hard to shake off from a Salt Yard menu, and remain so here. Read my attempt at making them from the recipe book HERE

Still got room for dessert? I went for the tiramisu and lemon ice cream, nice but nothing spectacular. I hear their donuts and quinze jam though are really good...Something to go back for

Fun place to go. Food was great. All the tapas tasted very good. However like other reviewers complained, it took reeeeeeally long time to get very simple drink orders. Ate here last night. Sat at the counter with my girlfriend. It was amazing to watch the chefs at work. We had the salmon tartar, prawns, chorizo, Ragu, stuffed courgette flower. Followed by the cheesecake and churros. Highly recommend this place. Amazing food, cooked in front of you. Great cocktails - espresso martini specifically and nice wines available in carafe. For me there was a bit too much salt on the courgette flower. But I am really searching to find a negative!!

At 35, I have only just discovered the joy that is grilled peaches with heirloom tomatoes and balsamic vinegar...what have I been missing?! This little restaurant is tucked down a little road off one of London's main thoroughfares and it is a find! Modern tapas style eating set in a chilled urban restaurant, with a vast range of clientele; from date night couples to small groups of friends, from mid-week work drinks to small family catch-ups, there was a real mix of people that made it feel inclusive and inviting. Top tip: for for a large plate and a few small plates, not skipping the vegetarian options. Definitely returning 🤌🏻

Best Tapas I’ve Had Outside of Barcelona Throughly enjoyed food here. Two of us had 6 tapas dishes between us which we just about finished. Prices were reasonable for such good standard of food and service was good (although it was lunchtime and was empty). Chorizo dish was highlight, along with the bean salad. And great selection of gin and tonics (with a twist). Highly recommend, and will go back.
