Forever one to get just a little anxious when there’s food to be had and queues to be avoided, I found myself at Gordon’s Wine Bar, clutching my glass filled to the brim with ‘Fat Bastard’ pinot noir, irritably shaking my leg while The European slowly and delicately sipped her Pinot Grigio. It was half-past eleven in the morning, and we had both booked a little mid-week vacation day off. Exploring London whilst most of the city is at work or school is heavenly – space to walk, room on the Tube and a seat in Gordons (well, that might be simply because we elected to ‘start early’).

The latter is perhaps the greatest benefit to exploring off-peak; the potential to be able to walk into restaurants which are both popular and operate a no-booking policy. I firmly believe that there’s a special place in hell for the people who operate such establishments, but I do get their logic – if you’re popular enough to fill tables four times a night, a booking system will allow tables to go unused while you wait for people to arrive. When there’s money to be had… pourquoi?

BAO is one such restaurant. Their famed Taiwanese steamed buns were first sold in London’s Netil Market in 2012 by siblings Shing Tat and Wai Ting Chung, and Erchen Chang (BAO BAR is now what that stall is called). BAO’s first actual, restaurant opened in Soho – on Lexington Street – in 2015, and there are now a few more, in Fitzrovia (this one takes bookings, can you believe it!), Borough (karaoke in lieu of bookings), and Xu, a teahouse and restaurant in Soho (bookings AND Mahjong!). BAO is lauded across the city for the quality of its food, but also for arguably less agreeable accolades such as a recent mention in TimeOut’s recent ‘London’s best no-booking restaurants’ listing. On the way into town, we had decided to eat at BAO Soho – it opened at noon and I wanted to be there then, to guarantee a seat – and to my earlier point, we were still drinking wine at Gordon’s at quarter to the hour, and it was a half-hour walk to the restaurant… most likely longer as The European would be Magpie-staring at every jewellery shop we would pass.

If you head onto BAO’s website, the cover image is an overhead sketch of the Soho restaurant, in the evening. In the picture, a dimly-lit Lexington Street, complete with some drunken revellers outside the John Snow pub next door, gives way to the golden lights of BAO, and the bright ‘munching man’ sign in the window. There are patrons inside, eating and drinking merrily, and smiling waiters all around. The picture speaks a lot of truth, apart from one thing – in the sketch there are empty tables.

By some stroke of luck, by the time we arrived, at around half twelve, we bagged pretty much the last table in the house, in the window, by that munching man sign (you have the choice of some standard tables at the back, some stools around the bar and two cute window seats which allow you to stare out at Soho living its best life. Part of me kind of wanted to be at the bar, at the heart of the action, but the restaurant isn’t a particularly glitzy place to be – white walls, plain wooden counter tops, slightly uncomfortable seating and little décor – so we sure didn’t get a bad deal. The greeter was also our waiter – a non-stop Smile Machine, who was probably dealing with the front section and the door for a reason, as moments after we arrived his grinny “HIIII! Table for one/two?” script changed to a no less cheerful “HIIII we currently don’t have any tables but if you leave me your name and number?...”

In-between telling hungry salarypersons and tourists to go away and come back in an hour, the Smile Machine took our order (you check off what you want to eat with a pencil, and hand the paper menu back to the server). It didn’t take us long to choose as the menu is tiny, with food chucked out of the kitchen at breakneck speeds. Within ten minutes of sitting down, we were tucking into BAO’s classic pork buns, their fried chicken buns (a larger version of the one we had at the scam which was Bundance, but a full quid cheaper – mental note, ever go to a burger festival ever again), a lamb shoulder bun to share, Taiwanese fried chicken, sweet potato chips and guinea fowl Chi Shiang rice.

This is soul-comforting, feel-good food at its best. The fried chicken bun was as good as ever – crispy, pull-apart chicken with hint of kimchi, hugged by that very unusual steamed-style burger bun (the sad thing was that the separate dish of Taiwanese fried chicken was exactly the same, without the bun, so we didn’t really need to order that, but hey, a problem I was happy to deal with). The classic pork steamed buns are kind of what made BAO famous in the first place, and whereas The European had tried them before, I had not, and they blew me away. The shredded pork, smothered in crumbly seasoning, melts in the mouth. We chowed them down in appreciative silence. The lamb bun – a gamble, as we don’t much care for lamb – was also really good. Again, the meat was shredded, taking away a lot of the stringy texture I despise so much about lamb. It was coated with a tangy, smooth mint sauce which, as the remnants of it dripped onto the plate, was good enough to be mopped up clean with the rest of the bun. The sweet potato chips (note these are fries, not potato chips) and the rice were surplus to requirements, as we were now already full, but the rice in particular was astounding – full of rich, fatty guinea fowl and bound together with egg yolk. As The European said, “I love how if I’m full, but find some other food tasty enough, I always find room for it”.

All this joy was washed down with BAO’s own ‘Lonely Moon Beer’; a fantastic session-style golden beer that’s light and easy to drink. You’re never feeling not looked after, and the hemmed-in seating (in our case, close proximity to the door and a good view of the ever-growing queue outside) means that you’re also never feeling not part of the action. The Smile Machine even had time to talk us through the type of rice that we ate, and where to buy it nearby (in case you’re interested, a Korean supermarket called ‘oseyo’ on Charing Cross Road).

So yes, we left BAO very happy indeed, an hour after we entered (we felt bad at the end, sitting and not eating, looking at all the hungry, miserable souls waiting outside). We also left £sixty lighter, which – considering BAO’s menu is full of small, cheap eats – is a little pricey, but then again, as I said, we ordered too much. So there was only one thing for it: to head back outside to the calmness of mid-week London, and find some frozen yogurt and a beer for dessert.

BAO is at the northern end of Lexington Street, next to the John Snow pub. Nearest station is Oxford Circus.

• Comfort factor: 6/10

• Returnability factor: 9/10

• Taste factor: 9/10

• Screaming kid factor: 7/10

Just fantastic!!

Great little space. Quite small Interrior but accommodates a fair number of people. Once you manage to get a seat, you are in for a treat.

The selection seems small but every dish is perfectly prepared. The diversity in the tastes is exceptional. A full selection of drinks rounds off the experience.

You shouldn’t miss it!

A little pricey for the portion size but still worth the hype it’s been getting. Grab a friend and order every bun on the menu so you can try a little of everything is probably my best advice. I’d also recommend this for lunch rather than dinner since the restaurant is quite small and the amount of food you get isn’t huge. Drinks wise the yakult float is deliciously refreshing. Tried their several dishes also. Its on slightly expensive side.

We had the lunch set and a classic bun. For the lunch set, we had Taiwanese fried chicken (fairly authentic), pork belly bun and rice with chicken. Food was good but portions, especially the bun was small, a bit too small to my liking. Shared benches inside and lovely sense of community. Sauces delish, bao buns light but great texture, fried chicken was a highlight. The classic was the best.

If you get here around 5pm there’s not a queue, but from 6ish you queue over the road by the litttle bao stop sign. Worth the wait. They do more than just bao, but I would definitely recommend both the fried chicken and the pork belly bao. To top the meal off the deep fried bao with Horlicks ice cream absolutely hits the spot!

Daikon Bao was unfortunately the only option available for me being a vegetarian. But to my surprise it tasty way better than anything I had in this cusuine. I couldn't help myself other than order 3 of them. They were really soft and delicious.
I liked them so much that I visited this place multiple times knowing I only have 1 option again and again! 😍

I called this place snack place because they have small space and serve small portion. Taste good. The Bao is soft. Like the confit pork bun. The classic bun is a bit sweet. Love the guinea fowl chi w/ rice. Peanut milk drink is recommended. Service is good very helpful with the menu. The minus is not too authentic taste of Taiwanese food.

I liked the food, but overall I think it was a bit pricey for what we eat. First time in such restaurant we asked the waitress for suggestions... I liked the aged beef, the confit pork and fried chicken bao's. The Guinea fowl chi shiang rice was OK, but I didn't really enjoyed the classic bao.

Overall was ok, but not the best baos I've had. Usually they are undercooked all the way through, but these one's were dry in the middle. I think the price is a bit off, 2 for £6 would be much better than 1 for £5. The house salad had too much vinegar, but brownie points for using kale / cavolo nero. The inside of the bao was the best part _ loved the pork belly with all the relishes!

As soon as you get to the door you will notice a big queue outside: yes, Bao is always packed inside (and outside). But, I swear: the waiting time is completely worthwhile. The food is amazing, very tasty (and some of the dishes a bit spicy as well). You get served quickly but in a nice manner and you don’t pay that much, what makes me think of Bao as a cheap (but full of quality) eat. I would recommend it to have a quick dinner with someone special.

Honestly one of the best meals I’ve taken anyone for, every bite of the green monster Bao (we kept reordering them since they’re so tiny but delicious) was sinfully good to say the least. The sweet potatoes with plum pickle sauce, eryngii mushroom with century egg (do a rice bowl as a side order, goes well with a dish) and the milk foam tea are must haves. Try their warm Oolong and green teas as well.

This restaurant deserves their rating (although I was skeptical at first) and their fried Horlicks ice cream is to die for! Excellent recommendations by our server Jun, we’re definitely coming back for more Taiwanese street food!

Great little restaurant in Soho, we had to queue up outside for about 20 mins before we could be seated, but it was well worth the wait. The walls are clad with warm wooden panels, as is the furniture. Minimalist, functional design which maximises use of a small space.

We had the Sake, Scallops, Guinea fowl rice and the Classic and Confit pork bao. The Scallops were cooked to perfection, seared outside and tender inside. It came with a dusting of fine seaweed which was so delicious, I couldn't get enough of it. I also loved the baos which were soft and fluffy with a tasty filling of pork. The sake was fairly strong and we loved it.

Service was fairly prompt with cheerful, friendly staff. This place really lives up to it's hype and is a place one must definitely visit when in London!

We went to this place because it was listed in the Top 10 restaurants to visit in London and it did not disappoint! We did have to wait in line to get in but we went around 7pm. It took about 30 minutes which wasn't too bad and once we got inside the service was very quick and the food was delicious! The bao buns were soft and fluffy and the fillings were divine! The chefs have picked out some great flavour combinations! We tried the confit pork, braised pork and braised lamb and they were all fantastic!

Let's put it this way. It's a interesting Soho finger food joint with good food. Very small place so expect to queue up for 10-15 minutes all week. Easily approachable on Lexington road and the staff is friendly and helpful. We tried the classic ( pork), lamb and chicken bao with rump steak slices in soya and Taiwanese fried chicken. Drinks are pretty wacky and I took the Kopitee. Downside - food is small in proportion but not on price. Expect to pay fine dine eatery rates but food is fresh and delicious.

The food is definitely good (I have to say that I have had better bao in other spots in London - I'm a big fan) but they have ramped up their prices having received such sterling reviews since opening. £5 for one very small bao is steep. I don't eat large portions and I wasn't hugely hungry when I went but I still had to order £20 worth of food to feel satisfied. Enjoyable but I wouldn't say that the value for money makes it a 'must visit'.

After a few attempts I finally managed to try out the so renowned Bao. We waited for about half an hour (previous times I stopped by there were queues of way over an hour) and I was very anxious to finally try out these Taiwanese delicacies . The waiter was friendly and recommended us 2 baos per person and a few of the other dishes. That's what we've done, and we managed to try one of each (I only missed the tofu bao). They were all very tasty. The combination of textures and flavours is definitely exceptional, and makes me understand all the hype. The house salad and the aubergine are great sides! Service is really fast, so you end up spending way more time in the queue than enjoying your meal... but only you can decide whether the wait is worth it! For me it definitely was this time, but I'll need to get the courage to go through it again next time I think of eating a bao.

This is a must try restaurant for all.

Right from the start you are offered an experience, as you will probably have to go through a queue (tip: arrive 15 mins before opening)

When you enter you find yourself in this charming almost japanese type space, compact and efficient.

Their menu and style of ordering is unique like in a traditional chinese dim sum eatery.

Best dish was their special: BEEF BRISKET ON RICE. It was absoloutely amazing and is a must try, they should keep it permanently on the menu.
Order the FRIED CHICKEN, the PORK CONFIT BAO. Finish off with HORLICKS BAO.

For drinks get the MILK FOAM TEA (its a unique take on the traditional iced tea)

Overall you will love it. Highly reccommended.

The place is always crowded. We waited a good 45 minutes before getting in.

Maybe because I don't consider baos as real meal but I think the baos are too overhyped. I've had a lot better baos in the past without having to queue for a long time.

We did love the original bao but the rest were just OK.

I am such a fan of Bao that I’ve been twice in one week. After discovering it’s delectable Chinese-fusion styled treats I couldn’t keep away. On one occasion it was lunch, and the other dinner, and both times didn’t have much of a wait at all. The store is a small one at that and there’s a queue. Thankfully, the food flies straight out of the kitchen so the tables clear away in good time. I’m close to having sampled most of the menu and there is no misstep. The baos (£4-5) are freshly steamed, full of tantalising flavour combos. It’s got some authentic notes but not too much that it scares you off eating. The guinea fowl chi shiang rice (£5.75) was quite a tasty little bowl and peanut milk (£1.50) is not to be missed. Of all the baos, my favourite is the classic (£4) with pork and peanut powder.

We had to wait a little bit for a table but it was well worth it! Just 5-10 minutes outside and we were treated to incredible Baos. I'd highly recommend the fried chicken bao, it was brilliant. The Lamb as well the Pork Shoulder were fantastic too.

Space is super cramped and we were seated at the counter next to the tills, so the waitresses kept bumping into me, which wasn't amazing, but they were all really sweet about it so it wasn't a deal breaker really. The food more than made up for the occasional mild discomfort

Was worth it to wait around 30mins for a table, they have 6 types of Boas. Most looked delicious, I've ordered the fried chicken, lamb shoulder and fried Horlicks ice cream boa for dessert, definitely the chicken was my favorite and it was crunchy and full with flavors, the lamb was delicious too but too spicy to taste anything other then the spiciness. The ice cream boa tasted good but tooo long to come unlike the others all boas were kind of smaller then what I've had usually. Service was quite fast and they seemed to be friendly and there always to help with ordering.

London has the quality and diversity of food like no other. Well, maybe New York too. Next up on the list of niche restaurants is steamed buns from Bao. BAO = Bun. This is how they describe themselves. "We make all our Baos in house, using milk, wheat flour and a roux. We steam our Baos so they are soft, pillowy and cloud-like."

BAO is the Taiwanese street food restaurant in London. No reservation. You always have to queue for at least 30 minutes. All their buns are delicious, the starters too. One inconvenient is that portions are really small, so you end up by ordering the menu twice. Sometimes even more!!!
It's not a cheap restaurant, so you can easily pass the 50£ per person! If you live in London, you have to try it!

All I gotta say is Bao Wow, it ain't about the size but what you can do with it... And boy does Bao know how to use its space wisely.

With seating for just around thirty diners at a time it's not uncommon to see a queue outside the restaurant, even at odd hours like 4-5PM.

Definite must haves are the lamb shoulder Bao and the pork confit Bao. They also have a fried chicken Bao, but I think you're better off getting the fried Taiwanese chicken as a starter as there's a lot more quantity and you'll want more and more of it as its a great accompaniment to the Taiwanese beer or the cocktails they serve. The other starter that you absolutely must have is the trotter nuggets - they are truly amazing!

The one dish I didn't think much of was the aged beef cap - didn't do anything for me.

After that first performance I understand why customers are ever willing to queue up to eat at Bao.

I finally had the opportunity... and the stamina... to stand in the queue and give Bao a try! I have been to the Netil Market location and it leaves you wanting more. So I was excited when, late on a Saturday night, my husband and I along with another couple grabbed beers at an off license around the corner and braved the hour long standing catch up. This place is worth every minutes of the wait! My husband and I shared the following: scallop - yum; trotter nuggets  - delicious; classic bao - so yum; confit pork bao - everything bao inspires to be; fried chicken bao - my only hang up was this bao seemed a bit dry; lamb shoulder bao - so much flavour.. ties for 1st place with the confit pork! I was devastated at the end of the meal to find out they had run out of the ice cream! Just means I have a great excuse to return another time!

The bao are incredible, and even where they've branched out the quality is high. I've been a couple of times and nothing has been a dud order. Even though it's always packed the service is friendly and you don't feel like you're being shoved out the door. Small plates always add up on the bill, but Bao hasn't hugely inflated prices from its street food setup so you can still have an amazing meal without breaking the bank. If you're prepared to queue.

Seriously good food!!! Been wanting to eat here for a while and finally took a short trip to Soho. A small intimate place which was rammed and although it was so full waiting time was less than ten minutes.

The staff were so friendly, polite and accommodating! I ordered the beef stew, chicken starter, lamb bao, fried chicken bao and fried hotlinks ice cream. The chicken starter came and was delicious, so many flavours which were so well meshed it started this meal off with a bang for me. Whilst I was hoofing the succulent chicken down the beef stew came and was so good it washed the palette making my taste buds ready for the bao.

The lamb bao came first and wow, like a fiesta on y taste buds!!!!! So good I stopped talking mid conversation and just consumed it in utter silence. I'm a firm believer that lamb has to be done right or not at all and with that I hands down believe that bao has it right right right! Spices, soft bao and beautiful lamb filled in between. My favourite out of the whole meal. Soon after the chicken bao came and it too was delicious but I felt all chickened out after the starter.

Finally, the fried hotlinks ice cream, a real must for me. If you're expecting a super sweet ice cream this is not for you. It's not too sweet and tastes exactly like hotlinks, divineeeee!!! Everything was washed down with a peach and verbena drink, so refreshing, it's perfect for a hot summer's day.

I will definitely return, no doubt about that!!!!

Completely full on a Tuesday night and we queued up for around 15 minutes before we got a table.

What we ordered:

Fried chicken bao: loved the bun and the flavours.
Scallops: just one piece and wouldn't order this again. Not great.
Taiwanese chicken with ketchup: just regular fried chicken with ketchup over it. Wouldn't order it again.
Horlicks ice cream bao: loved this. Soft bun and amazing ice cream
Taiwanese whiskey: delicious. Must try
Peanut milk: tasted like snickers chocolate and I could have finished a whole bottle of this. SOO GOOD!!!

Would go back for the sweet stuff for sure. Cute place but could do with more of a variety. Excellent service.

We went there around 3pm and the line was shorter than we expected.

We had the lamb shoulder bao, classic bao, confit pork bao, aubergine with crunchy crisps, pig blood cake, lamb bacon and guinea fowl rice. The buns were so soft and the fillings were delicious! Classic Bao was my favourite. I also recommend the guinea fowl chi shiang rice and aubergine. Lamb bacon and lamb shoulder bao were too spicy for both of us. I recommend to order at least 3-4 dishes because the portions are small.

Overall, we had a nice experience. Definitely worth the wait.

In reality, I'm not a big fan of Taiwanese Cuisine. When I've seen the queue in front of the Bao I've just said OK, good! Let's go see the other places! However, one day my friend has insisted that I should try those foods and I've tried. So? It is definitely well worth waiting. If you are a flavor hunter like me, you'd better stop for lunch.

I'm forever walking past Bao with no time to queue and telling myself I must come back soon.  2 years later I made it!!  Luckily only had to queue for a fraction of the time anticipated so forced to down our drinks we strategically purchased from the pub next door sharpish.

I've had buns from a few places now and they never seem to disappoint.  Bao's however do stand out from the crowd.  So soft with a selection of tasty fillings.  It was late on so we didn't really have the appetite to try too many as we wanted to sample a couple of sides too.  The classic bun you can't go wrong, the sweet potato fries were surprisingly good as was the peanut milk!  Miso satisfied.

A bao is a Taiwanese steamed bun made with milk and filled with all sorts of lovely things. Bao the restaurant started life as a stall in Netil Market where these little buns proved wildly popular. The team then opened their first restaurant in Soho in 2015 (a second one is about to open in Fitzrovia). It’s very much a no-frills sort of place, resembling a wood panelled cloakroom with some tables and a counter. The menu is deceptively simple – some baos, some other small plates, some side dishes. However, the food itself is intriguing. Pigs blood cake, erynjii mushroom with century egg, guinea fowl chi shiang rice. If this is indicative of Taiwanese cuisine then it has certainly got my attention.

As a traveler, I've always took pride in the fact that I could go anywhere and do anything on my own. All I needed before was a map, a hungry tummy, a good sense of direction, and an equally good sense of smell and I was all set. Food was how I got around town and with the number of really good nook and cranny places abounding all over the world, a gastronomic adventure seemed likely. When I got to London after relocating here for work, I figured I'd do the same. And when I checked food blogs, ratings, and all other lists, I noticed one place kept popping up on the Top 10 of almost everything I saw: Bao.

Situated in the Soho area, Bao is a foodie's dream made reality. Small, cozy interior that allows for lines to be situated outside? Check. Lines of hungry customers braving the cold for hours just to sample their delectable fare? Check. A no-nonsense approach to food presentation and just hitting you in the face with a punch of mouth-watering flavors in out of this world appearances? Check. (It helped that I was only able to go here when the weather was getting a bit warmer already; standing out in the freezing temperatures during winter is unimaginable, though totally worth it.)

First thing I saw was the line, obviously. It was still a bit nippy but by no means chilly so I was able to stand outside in the great London weather. The line was a bit shorter than I expected; most reviews suggested to avoid the dinner rush so I arrived around 2pm, an hour before they closed for the afternoon service. And, seeing as I had done my visit by my lonesome, it was quite easy for me to get a table. 10 minutes and I was able to sit in my spot near the kitchen and I prepared myself for their flavors. Here were my orders:

1) Iced Tea - classic chinese tea with a layer of foam on top. Quite reminiscent of the oolong/jasmine teas with foam of Happy Lemon, this was quite the light and refreshing drink. This came way first so I had to ease myself into drinking it for fear that I may not have anything to wash down food if any of them had weird and unappealing flavors. (Thankfully, none of them did and I was really happy I didn't need to resort to this.)

2) Aubergine with Wonton Crisps - this small platter came next. At first glance, seeing mushed up aubergines/eggplants looked quite unassuming but the sprinkle of herbs on top really gave it a warm, fresh look to it. The crisps accompanying them was lightly salted, just enough to give it flavor should you want to indulge on it alone but not too salty to overpower the delectable aubergines. It was quite the spice-filled dish and it did not disappoint in the slightest. It was light, airy, and unnaturally creamy that you wouldn't actually think it was made of aubergines! A triumph of ingenuity, this dish could be snuck under the nose of vegetable-phobe and he would completely devour this dish and be none-the-wiser.

3) Classic Pork Bao - You wouldn't think I wouldn't order their piece de resistance now would you? The Classic Pork Bao, the one that put Bao right on the foodie map, was absolutely insane. Light and fluffy, the buns were a remarkable vehicle to bring the delectable meat into your mouth. It was not too light that it would break apart too soon as you bit into it but it was tough enough to hold the sauce of the pork inside without being turned into mush. The pork, marinated and cooked in an unearthly sauce that must have been sent from above, was so tender and delicate, it must have been cooked in a pressure cooker. I don't know how but it was just so damn good. Seriously. I took one bite and was in heaven. The peanuts and the fresh herbs on top give it a distinct crunch PER BITE. Just pure heaven in a soft bun.

4) Daikon Bao - being the veggie lover that I am, I figured I would try their vegetarian-friendly bun. A thin slice of a fresh daikon radish draped over a friend daikon radish cake. It may be a vegetarian lovers bun but, as with the aubergine dish served earlier, it doesn't even taste remotely radish-y at all! It was dressed with a semi-sweet-spicy glaze that made every bite so magical. For a person who grew up not liking the stinky smell of pickled radish (and eventually liking them so much), it was a triumph in cooking. I could hazard a guess and say I like the Classic Pork and Daikon Radish Baos on almost the same level. Sacrilegious? I think not.

5) Pig Blood Cake - yes, PIG BLOOD. How on earth can I eat such a thing, you say? I am a Filipino and I have been exposed to what we call as "Betamax," a grilled cube of pork/chicken blood that is dipped in spicy vinegar so a Pig Blood Cake is nothing new to me. What amazed me was that it actually tasted more meaty than I gave it credit for. There was not a hint of the weird texture I was used to eating Filipino street foods but rather it was a velvety, albeit crispy bite that swirled in my mouth. The yellow yolk provided a silky and salty contrast to it that did not overpower the already supposedly overpowering taste of pig blood. For the adventurous tongue, it doesn't get any more exotic than this but truly, a dish that is a triumph onto itself.

I unfortunately had so much to eat that I stopped short of ordering their desserts. But, as with all great restos I've been to, this place deserves seconds, thirds, fourths, and so on and I am and will always be looking forward to my palate being blown away AGAIN.

Sincerely,

Your Neighborhood Hungry FatSpiderMan

The 45 minute wait was well worth it, my friend and I had timed it well and managed to be some of the last diners during the lunch service. Having heard so many good things about Bao, we decided to give it a go and ordered a variety of dishes to get stuck into.
Having been recommended the lamb Bao by a friend we ordered that along with the classic Bao, the fried chicken, trotter nuggets, aubergine with wonton crisps and the scallop with yellow bean and garlic.

I was pleasantly surprised by the trotter nuggets which were flavoursome and succulent, the fried chicken was another personal favourite. I wasn't as keen on the aubergine however everything else we tried I'd definitely order again! The classic Bao was delicious, from the pillowy soft cloud like bun, the peanut powder adding a nutty finish and the braised pork was cooked to perfection.

Certainly worth the wait, I'll undoubtedly be back to try some other treats from the small but perfectly formed menu!

There is always. A line. For this restaurant. ALWAYS. I tried bringing a group of friends here once, but we quickly left after realizing that this place would not sit all 8 of us within 20 minutes. I literally came here after eating lunch at a nearby restaurant, because I figured that being alone would help me surpass the queue. It did, but only marginally. I still had to wait outside for a bit.

So, is the wait worth it? The short answer -- yes. I never realized how creative you could be with bao, and if it wasn't for the lines I would come back frequently just to try all the offers. One bao is pretty small though, so they recommend you have two or three for a proper meal. Not a good value, therefore, if you're a heavy eater. My sincerest apologies. For everyone else, though, the line is definitely worth it. Plus, there's a Pret a Manger right across (you actually line up in front of it), so you can ask a friend to hold your spot while you get a quick bite to eat if you really, really, really can't wait.

We were a group of 6, including 4 kids! Yup. We also had a buggy and a suitcase, yet we were welcomed with a smile all the way (knowing that the place is tiny) The gentleman on the bar was amazing and very attentive to our needs. He was very busy, but made time to interact with the children. As for the food, the classic bao, peanut milk and the tea with milk froth are not to be missed.

Wonderful flavour. The ‘bao’, soft smooth little buns, are filled with a range of delicious meats, spices and flavour. We were here in the month of February, on a beautiful afternoon. Order as many as you can eat! Turnip tops with a super dressing and Aubergine with crunchy crisps, sweet deep fried potatoes, and all good. The best 'little taste 'was a scallop with a garlicky spiced dressing. Friendly staff! They were all smiley helpful and efficient, but too many in such a tiny space. We ordered pretty much the whole menu to try everything. Wasn't a fan of the blood cake or century egg but that's just my taste. Absolutely loved the Aubergine with wonton crisps, spicy and delicious, all the Boas were gorgeous, you should order one of each to try them all. Will definitely be back.

Now, it's quite well known that if you want to come to Bao, you have to be ready to queue. Don't be fooled by the first photo which features an empty doorway, they make people queue across the road. Knowing this, my companion and I decided we were going to arrive at 5:15pm (the restaurant opens at 5:30) in order to avoid the dinner rush hour. Even so, there was already a queue outside.

After 2 failed attempts at getting a place at Bao I was starting to doubt that I would ever eat here but alas the 3rd time is a charm, even though it did involve a 2h wait standing in a queue outside which did not contribute to a pleasant experience (but may also have influenced how good the food tasted as we were all seriously starving by the time we sat down).
We decided to have 3 baos each - I had the classic, the fried chicken and the lamb, of which the classic was by far my favourite. Not only the bun was very soft and pillow like but the filling was super tasty in a sweet and savoury kind of a way, not at all pig-y tasting (if you know what I mean) which is why I usually don't like pork dishes. We also had some dishes to share - the trotter nuggets (surprisingly amazing), the mushrooms (very well seasoned, tasted very meaty in an excellent way), the beef (good, but did not blow me away especially for the price/quantity) and the fried sweet potato (deliciously sweet and crispy, recommend!). If I ever manage to go back I'll definitely have more of that classic bao as well as the mushrooms and I would like to try the guinea fowl rice which was unfortunately sold out when we went.

Bao built up quite a formidable reputation for their steamed buns at local markets before the Gymkhana restaurant backers put them into their bricks and mortar location in Soho. Six months on, there’s still a long line waiting outside the restaurant for the chance to sample the menu of small plates. Yes, even in the open in mid winter. My tip is to arrive 15 minutes before opening time to beat this queue.

I, or rather we, knew there was definitely going to be a queue. So the plan was to set   the maximum waiting time and discuss coming up with a contingency plan. In the first 45 minutes we did not move at all. Then just as we debated whether to leave or not, the queue moved and we edged forward a teeny weeny bit. It was both encouraging and frustrating at the same time. Do we leave now or should we stay on? So, as you might gather, BAO does not take reservations.

BAO has only 30 seats – all very cosy. Even the tables and chairs are mini size but were luckily, quite comfortable; a few stools around the bar, a couple by the window (one which we frantically prayed we never seated at because you are only a glass window away from the queuers. Hence, eye level when seating is the bum level of the queuer. But we were a company of trio so we were safe, phew!) and a few tables closer to the kitchen.

The menu? BAOs were the star of the show but there are plenty of side dishes for nibbles; with the exception my fried chicken; it is a strictly no sharing dish for me. We ordered almost the whole menu except for the soup, scallop, pickles and the fried chicken bun. The dishes are small portions and were served as and when they were ready. There are quite a number of tea, beer and cider choices. No wine. Few non-alcoholic (I find) interesting beverages are foam teas and peanut milk.

I love BAO in everyway. The entrepreneurs themselves are laudable. Growing from a humble beginning in the street food scene until a permanent location in Soho with queues that every restaurant craves for, they are a trio that still are as down to earth as any soil. When we left, an hour and a half later, there was still a queue.

Ever since I discovered Fatty Boa's in Bangalore I have loved the Boa. This place doesn't have the ambiance and certainly street queuing in the cold is not the same as sitting at a roof top bar sipping cocktails in the tropical heat but the food totally matches the tastiness of an authentic Boa. What started as a small food truck has now become hugely popular little bao restaurant in London's super competitive Soho restaurant scene. And for good reason. Little Twainese steamed bao buns served with tasty ingredients and in a cosy friendly modern little restaurant. But it doesn't stop with the bao, the sides and starters are worth coming for alone; mushy aubergine with wonton crips (delicious) or aged rump cap with aged white soy (meat heaven). These are worth coming for alone. But the secret is well and truly out, the queue starts before the doors open and on a Saturday night it won't stop all night. Drinks include beer, wine, sake and they also take their Oolong tea pretty seriously. Best bet is try for lunch getting there a few minutes before 12.

So, here I am writing up Soho's newbie and ever-so-popular 'Bao' after a 40 minute, nervous, 'will it be good enough for my dining companion after all this?!' wait in the dismal, December rain almost a month ago...

Finally we made it through the door and were perched at the bar which, in my view are the best seats due to looking at the bar staff busying themselves and not a wall or, back out onto the street teasing the queue of people you managed to get in front of...

The menu is simple. Operating a tick box system which you can easily go over board on ordering and booze is again, kept simple. Very few wines, a couple of beers, cider and Sake... easy! A white and a beer for us then and we got on with ticking away most of the menu...

Scallop, yellow bean and garlic arrived first and was utterly incredible, sat in a puddle of garlicky yummyness and perfectly cooked. Thus meaning, I swiftly ordered more and sat waiting in anticipation until the new batch arrived. Along with these came sweet potato chips which a pickle ketchup which neither of us were too fussed about.

Taiwanese fried chicken... definitely get this over the Bao version. Crispy, spicy, delicious!

Then arrived our first Bao bun The 'Classic'. Braised pork, Peanut powder, fermented greens and coriander. One bite and try to resist the immediate 'oh, my, god' that comes from within... it's so, so good!

Confit pork Bao, pork sauce, hot sauce and dried shallots. Just as good but, the above wins by a whisker.

We shared all of our dishes and the next one was pretty tricky to give up half of. Lamb shoulder Bao which has had numerous high praises from foodies. Incredibly juicy and smothered in a coriander sauce with a good amount of chilli kick. I defy anyone not to love it...

Calvolo nero, salted egg is surprisingly moreish and irresistible.

Pig's blood cake, egg yolk... not for the squeamish but, if you love black pudding this dish is for you. Rich, meaty and made even more so by the soy cured, oh so oozy egg yolk you mix into it.

Our bill came to £78 for the two of us and we left completely and utterly full...So, join the ever growing, ever groaning queue it's most definitely worth the wait.

We had their classic bao braised pork, fresh coriander, peanut powder, fermented greens. As its names suggests, its the classic bao to have. All the flavour was in the braised pork, everything else was to compliment the pork rather than enhance it
We also had lamb shoulder bao. The cumin strong lamb, deeply intense coriander sauce, creamy garlic mayo, sharp and spicy chilli – four bold flavours that came together so well, we were speechless.
One not to miss is their fried horlick ice cream bao. The bao is deep fried then sliced in two, sandwiched in between is a scoop of Horlicks ice cream.
We paid over £20 for these dishes and we couldn't get enough. We love it and would definitely come back again Yummy Jubbly !

It is a Monday lunchtime and a tedious morning has my brain looking for a food-based displacement activity. There is nothing calling to me within a mile of my office and I am not in the mood for polite conversation. I remember that I have not yet been to Bao and I am almost too ashamed to admit this. In the world of people who go out to eat a lot, it’s like saying you have never watched Star Wars. Which I confess I haven’t. And whilst we are in confessional mode, I found out there was a game called Connect Four when I was in my forties and I’ve never watched Mary Poppins. So kill me.

Am I a bad person if I say Bao didn’t impress me?

The food is good, but it isn’t worth the wait.
After reading the reviews on Zomato I gathered that I would have to arrive early (before they open) to avoid queuing for 45mins – 1 hour (their average wait time on a Saturday evening). So I arrived at 5:10pm to find a HUGE queue. Thankfully we made it in as the first batch of customers after they opened for dinner service. (5:30pm).

The menu consists of small bites so you have to order quite a few to satisfy your appetite. We ordered:

- Scallop, Yellow Bean Garlic – heavenly deliciousness
- Guinea Fowl Chi Shiang Rice – the most filling dish they have
- Classic Bao – my favourite! The crush peanuts give the dish an extra oomph!
- Fried Chicken Bao – good but wayyy too small to be worth £5
- Lamb Shoulder Bao – seemed like an Asian dish with Mexican influence. I’m not sure how traditional this is.

Will I be back for seconds? Maybe for the Classic Bao and scallop dish if there isn’t a queue!

The bun (bao) is super fluffy, soft and doesn't stick to your teeth. I tried the classic and confit bao, fried chicken, sweet potato fries, cavolo nero with salted egg and the Guinea fowl rice. For the bao, I prefer the confit pork with fried onion as it has more crunch and fat from the pork. The rice is also very tasty and more filling than the other dishes. One thing I wouldn't order again is the tiny tea, it's too small!

We went at about 12.30pm, and were lucky to immediately get seats for 2. The place doesn't have too many seats, so if your timing is not right, you could end up queuing for a bit. People who came after us were queuing outside for about 20-30 mins.

Nonetheless, with the quality of food, I wouldn't mind queuing the next time I am here. We ordered the following:

1. Sweet potato chips: sour plum sauce coating the fries was nice - didn't make the fries soggy. Had good balance.
2. Scallop: one scallop per order - fresh and not overcooked
3. Mushrooms
4. Classic Bao
5. Confit Bao
6. Guinea Fowl rice
7. Fried Horlicks ice-cream

The Baos were definitely the best and a must have. But in fact all other dishes were equally good. Loved the rice as well.

We were only two but the portion size was small enough that we were able to try all the above which was great (bearing in mind we are not big eaters).

I know what your thinking. Yet another review tripping over itself to shower accolades over the Soho sensation that is Bao – the Taiwanese bun restaurant that has taken London by storm. Well, last Saturday I finally had the chance to go try it for myself, and somewhere between the hour-long queue to get in and being rushed out to make room for the next guests, I somehow lost my enthusiasm.

A tiny Taiwanese no bookings place in Soho. Arm yourself with patience (and a beer or two) and wait in line the hour or so it takes to be seated, because it's worth it!

You'll be given a menu and asked to write how many of each item you'd like. Dishes are quite small, so roughly 5 per person including dessert is about right.

Everything in the bao section of the menu looked amazing but we settled on the lamb, the pork and the fried chicken (all pictured). The buns were light and ridiculously fluffy and are by far the best thing on the menu, although all the food is excellent.

Also pictured are the pig trotter nuggets, pig blood cake (i.e. black pudding), aged beef rump cap w/ aged white soy sauce and the fried ice cream dessert. Wash everything down with some sake and you're good to go!

Bao is a really enjoyable, fun experience. Going as a two was great because we both got a solid amount of each bao to enjoy the flavours.
My boyfriends favourite was the classic and mine the duck.
The fried chicken was delicious: perfectly cooked and perfect amount of spice!
I loved the seaweed. it's really yummy if you're into vinegar which I definitely am.
Some things I wasn't too impressed with were the mushrooms and the scallop. They were okay but I think for that price I was expecting a bit more.
I think a few of the baos could do with a bit more sauce but all in all the food was delicious!
The waiting staff are really helpful and smiley and the all round atmosphere is great. I'd recommend coming here on a date or with a friend for a fun night!
We will be back to try the remainder of the menu!!!

This little restaurant serves up little dishes with amazing tastes.

It is conveniently located in Soho and has such a great vibe to it.

Only seating about 30 people, expect to find yourself lined up on the opposite side of the street waiting for your to get stuck into the taste sensations that await you inside.

The dining experience is quite exciting as you place your order for all the different dishes that you want and they are served to you as and when they are ready in the kitchen. As you finish off the one dish, you can immediately look forward to the next item which will emerge from the kitchen.

Relatively expensive for the portion sizes but worth it for the big taste and great atmosphere.

Staff are friendly-ish and service is good.

Highly recommended.

Love it! This reminds me of having dim sum as each of the dishes are relatively small and easy to share. The buns are delicious. I like how the options on the menu are limited so there are less options to choose from. Food is served quickly too.

Only one bad thing, since the restaurant is so small we need to wait for at least 20 minutes before settling down. But the service is good overall and the price is reasonable. A big thumbs uppp!

If you are going please be aware it is very popular, so you may be queuing 45 minutes for a table, but the food is totally worth it. The John Snow pub is next door to get drinks whilst you wait anyway. We had about 9 dishes between 2 of us, all were great. The meal cost us about £38 with service. The waitresses were also very good and friendly. I will definitely be going back again!

My first time at BAO was about 8 months ago, I was introduced to it by a long term friend of mine. I remember it was raining cats and dogs and the queue outside was massive. Now, Italians are not very keen when it comes to a queue. It’s just not part our culture. We want it right here, right now.

But the fact that my friend was taking me to a place where she went for dinner the night before was saying it all and thank god I trusted her. Never has queuing been so worth it in my life.

This little gem, the size of my bedroom, dominates unrivaled the scene in Lexington Street, SoHo.

People passing by approach you while you are queuing on the other side of the street hesitant and with curiosity asking “Excuse me, what are you queuing for?”.

This other time at BAO I was luckier as my friends and I gained the pole position in the queue. I was kindly asked what I wanted to drink and 2 minutes later I was served a nice chilled Taiwanese beer to make the wait a bit merrier.

The one page menu comes as a tick list, which has to be filled in with your choices and quantities and then handed to the waiting staff. Food comes shortly after.

The menu includes a list of 9 Xiao Chin which are small bites and a list of 6 BAO’s which are this pillow soft steamed buns, Taiwanese style.

Prices per courses are between £3 and £6 (yes, I did not mistype) which makes you want to just tick off everything (oh you can do that for roughly £70!)

People, treat your taste buds all the way and do not dare to skip the Scallops with yellow bean garlic sauce - TERRIFIC - as well as the Guinea Fowl Chi Shiang Rice - OUTSTANDING.

The BAO’s are purely what dreams are made of: the Classic with braised pork, the Fried Chicken and the Lamb Bao are my top 3 and I swear they will make you feel emotional and in heaven.

Finish off with a delicious Fried Horlicks Ice cream BAO, crunchy and creamy to the right point.

For those who are charitable, 25p from every classic BAO sold goes to Action Against Hunger.

Oh BAO, you made me love you.

New street food restaurant in London? Give me a few minutes and I’ll be there! To London foodies, Bao is probably nothing new. Known for their Taiwanese steamed buns at Netil Market, Bao has opened a casual restaurant for quick eats with an extended menu in Soho. Though, count in some food-market-style standing, because the queue is long!

I think I went on a Monday evening. After queuing for about 40min, we were seated at the counter of this living-room sized restaurant and choose the dishes from the tick-list menu.

Besides the six bao, they also offer nine xiao chi (small eats) that are probably new to most of us non-Taiwanese folks (e.g. pig blood cake or trotter nuggets). Luckily the prices are quite affordable (£6 for the priciest one) and the dishes fairly small, so order a mix to share! We kicked off our dinner with some refreshing Taiwanese Foam Tea which was the perfect base for what was to come, light in flavour with the foam creamy and slightly sweet. The Classic Bao was my favourite. It was filled with deliciously savoury-sweet braised pork which was balanced out by the refreshing taste of fermented greens and coriander. Though, it was the addition of peanut powder that won me over. We also tried the Crumbed Daikon Bao (only veggie option) and the Lamb Bao. Both were just as tasty, though, hot sauce and soy pickled chilli were a little too spicy for my chilli-weakness. Nonetheless, the chunky daikon covered in light crispy batter was delightfully fluffy and had a hint of sweetness, while the lamb shreds were perfectly tender.

Since we were all adventurous foodies, of course, we tried the Pig Blood Cake. It was a savoury delight topped with a gorgeously soy-aged egg yolk (and actually not scary when you know blood sausage or haggis). The most expensive dish on the menu is the 40 Day Rump Cap (£6). You get served six incredibly tender, yet chewy slices of steak (due to the fatty bits) packed with flavour. Definitely delicious, but maybe not unique enough for me to order again. The Aubergine with Wonton Crisps were a great mix of softness and crunchiness in combination, it’s sweet and tangy dish that’s great for those who love that kick of chilli (me excluded). We ended the dinner with some Fried Horlicks Ice Cream Bao. A bit of a challenge when eating, but when squeezing the two fried buns together, you are (less-messy) treat! Crispy sweetness outside and refreshing creaminess inside. Yummy!

So what do I take home from my dinner? I love peanut powder with braised pork, I can’t eat chilli and I have a thing for tea with foam (ordered two!). I get why everyone’s been raving about Bao and it’s definitely a place worth trying out for their well-crafted and unique menu. However, I wouldn’t call it a “must-visit” as those reasonable prices add up at the end. I would totally go there regularly to have the Classic Bao, but considering the waiting times, it’s hardly a place you can visit without having patience.

Bao, well what can I say!! My friend took me here on Saturday night and it was amazing!
When we arrived there was a queue but it moved quickly and the waiter gave us a menu to look at while we waited. We didn't have to wait long until we got seated inside.
We ordered the traditional Bao, fried chicken and lamb Bao. I also ordered a peach verbena drink.
The traditional Bao came out really quickly and was delicious. The meat was really tender and the Bao soft and pillowy. It came with peanuts crushed over the top which added another tasty dimension.
The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
The lamb Bao came out last and the flavours were just so unexpected! The lamb was really tender and the Bao was also really soft and pillowy. The flavour was a really good fusion between Asian and South American as it was a little bit spicy.
For desert we wanted to order the sweet Bao with ice cream. But unfortunately it sold out, they did have an alternative dessert but it didn't appeal to us. We were pretty disappointed, but it actually worked out for the best because we got to have an amazing dessert- read my next post for details!

I came across Bao a few years ago at a street food festival and fell in love with their food. Their baos were better than I remembered and I thought they were already pretty special. I have to say my favourite one was the classic (I only tried two). The tender and juicy pork inside the super soft bao, topped with the sweet and nutty peanut...was just amazing! My friend recommended I try the rump cap...just WOW! It's a must try if you visit. Tender, flavourful, sweet, tangy...party in my mouth! I can't wait to visit again! The only not so great thing about my experience was having to wait in a line for table...but this is only minor when the food is just so delicious.

Who can resist grilled scallop on their shell? I wasn’t too happy that it was 3.50 gbp for a tiny scallops though, I expected it to be more generous. Although it was enjoyable, the scallops was slightly too salty with too much soy sauce. I loved the seaweed flakes on top though, making it very Japanese too. Don’t try to gulp down the sauces though like I did, it is a little spicy, and might just shock you.

Nice enough food for an ungodly price. Enjoyed the Lamb and Chicken Baos and a side of Sweet Potato Chips, ordered less than recommended however this spot doesn't live up to the hype or price point. The service was fantastic, and the line outside managed very well... but just doesn't have that wow factor I was looking for.

I knew the Taiwanese steamed bun restaurant was the current ‘go to’ place in London and I’d heard all about the queues. But I wasn’t able to get to Soho until 30 minutes before they closed at 10pm. The queue seemed to be moving fairly quickly so I was pretty optimistic. Until about 15 minutes later when the same lab coat wearing waitress came to tell us, just us, that the kitchen closed in 10 minutes and we were unlikely to get inside in time. It turned out to be a wise decision as we eventually got in with 4 minutes to spare.

The finger lickin’ ‘Taiwanese Fried Chicken’ was beautiful crispy on the outside, superb juicy chicken inside, there was hints of ginger as well as that distinctive umani taste you get with Asian food. Topped with savoury and very spicy hot sauce.

And then the dish that gives the restaurant its name.
Bao are soft, pillowy steamed buns filled with all sorts of delightful ingredients.
I first fell in love with them from Yum Bun at Street Feast last year and have had them at every opportunity since.
The ‘Classic BAO’ is stuffed with tender shredded pork and topped with fermented greens and peanut powder. The meat is rich and delicious while the greens and peanut powder add depth and texture, the combination of everything together in the soft fluffy bun is a joy.

It’s all about those buns, well more specifically it’s all about the Baos. We first found this Bao London, via instagram and we did a little research on this place and my goodness, do they have an interesting back story.

In our opinion Bao was delicious and we’d visit again. We loved how the baos’ were light and soft. Freshly made and baked every morning, makes for a busy Bao. While there, we tried the majority of the menu, but we wished we had got to try the two starters – the scallop and the aubergine wonton crisp! They looked delicious and we will be back for them!

In terms of our favourite dishes here is a small snippet of what we loved.

Classic Bao:
Braised pork, mixed with fermented greens topped with coriander and crushed peanuts.

Lamb Bao:
Our second favourite, the lamb, was melt in the mouth yummy. But what was the best about this bao was the coriander sauce combined with the Soy pickled chilli.

Fried Chicken Bao:
Unlike the others this looks like a mini burger. Soy milk marinated chicken, with Sichuan Mayo and Golden Kimchi.

two with only a chopstick at hand. The pork bun was filled with juicy, strings of pulled pork, mixed with a sticky sauce and some shallots. The chicken bun looked little bit different from the standard white fluffy boas. Filled with fried chicken, this bao is a sesame bun had a brownish colour, which seemed slightly less appealing at first, but we soon changed our minds about that after our first bite. The tender chicken chunks were lying in a bed of sichuan mayo and were topped with tangy kimchi, which was a heavenly combo.

This little spot in Soho serving small Taiwanese dishes has caught the attention of the entire London food scene. It has gotten to the point where pictures of Bao's dishes are almost unavoidable on food blogs or on Instagram. I can't tell whether this is as a result of an increasingly socially-intertwined world or whether Bao has one hell of a marketing manager! I am drawn towards the latter claim; it seems that Bao sets themselves apart with a strong brand presence by way of their logo, merchandised goods and strong social-network presence. I admire the ability that Bao has harnessed to create a persistent hype but I really just wonder is whether the flavours of their dishes can stand for themselves.

Bao..

I went there cause of many friends who were saying me: "Go there!! They make the best steamed buns of London!!"

Well.. I love the simplicity and deliciousness of steamed buns, so I went to try it.

A part from the long queue(20 minutes waiting), the place was small, simple and minimalist.
Simple but attractive menu. To tick with the pencil and give it to the waitress(Ping Pong style..)
I was so attracted by the dishes that I've ticked all of them during the night!!

Between all the dishes what I really enjoyed?
The Scallop with yellow bean garlic (tender, perfect cooking, luxurious laste 8/10)
The 40 day Rump Cap (dressed with a nice and interesting Soy dressing 9/10)
The Confit Pork Bun (just tender, nice and rich of flavour.. how it has to be 9/10)

They even offered me a beautiful Sake! Which made the night even better!

Summarising.. I came back already to Bao to even have just a fast Bun as a sneak!
Beautiful quality and Taiwanese Simplicity. And I will go back soon!! ;)

After the much anticipated wait, Bao has finally opened their Soho restaurant!Like their streetfood stalls, they still serve their pillowy soft cloudy steamed buns but with a wider variety of fillings, and the addition of a range of Taiwanese small dishes. I managed to pop in for lunch on their second day since opening, after scrolling through my Instagram feed the night before which was bombarded with endless drool-worthy photos.I ordered the peanut milk, which came served with ice in a small glass - it was really tasty and refreshing, and I could have easily downed a couple more glasses.

Bao Soho has had lines down the street (and across the road in more recent weeks) ever since it moved its East London street food popup to a permanent Soho location in April. The place is tiny and doesn’t take bookings which half explains the lines and of course the natural question that arises from this is “does the food warrant the wait?” If you don’t want to read any more of this review then the short answer is yes but let’s be honest, you want to know more.

Of the all the British habits that I’ve picked up over the many years living in London, the most useful has to be the willingness and patience developed to wait in a queue. My endless quest for the best eats in town has found me standing in line on good many an occasion, from breakfast (for Bilbo Granger’s ricotta hotcakes, and boy were they worth it) to even for a street salad. So I suppose that it was inevitable that I would succumb to the hype surrounding Bao. The Taiwanese street stall (originating in Netil Market) recently set down permanent roots in Soho’s Lexington Street, with Time Out correctly predicting a Momofuku-style buzz and queues.

Strategically arriving well ahead of when the tiny eatery officially opens for lunch at noon, ensured that I was able to grab a spot at the very front of the very quirky Bao Stop; an (orderly) queue soon forming thereafter.

Our appetites were sufficiently whet while we were waiting, as we glanced through the short and simple menu organised around xiao chi (small dishes); bao (signature steamed milk buns) and sides. The look and feel once inside is quite simple too, with a no-fuss minimalist decor.

Whenever I see a restaurant tag themselves as "street food" I chuckle a little, simply because there's a running joke about how street food can't ever be authentic sans the "stalls, sticks, smart prices, and 'secret ingredients' (you wouldn't want to know)". However, there are a few good street food restaurants in town and quite frankly, I do like the idea of "eating dirty on a clean plate".

This was my second attempt at trying to score a table at the hugely popular Bao. Very rarely has a restaurant opened to universal praise and never ending queues so I had to go and see what the fuss was all about. Luckily on an atypical Friday evening there were only a few tables queuing before us, so repressing the impatient foodie in me we waited outside on a damp July evening.

Very crowded place with long queue. Finally managed to get in at 3 pm on a Monday.

The food is effectively a Bun with meat inside. Presentation is quite cute and is quite tasty. Concept wise it is something different so glad to see that it has gained the recognition for being different. We had the fried chicken Bao and classic Bao which are both delicious. They both have their own marination which gives them a distinct taste. The scallop is highly recommended and is genius. Dessert I can't remember what we ordered (ie less impressed). But a satisfying meal all in all

It is only suitable for a quick meal though so will I queue an hour for an 30 min meal? Sadly I just decline but well worth a try when the fad dies down...

I have been here twice and absolutely loved it. Except for the queuing part and how small it is (don't try going with a group larger than 3 as you will never get a table, the ideal is a party of two) everything is great! Bun wise I would recommend the confit pork one and and definitely also worth trying the beef and the scallops!

I’ll get the obvious out of the way first. Yes, it was excellent. Yes, all of the stellar reviews from the like of AA Gill and Giles Coren are deserved. Yes, they’ve already outgrown their tiny space on Lexington Street. Is it worth the queue? Well…. Bao, only recently opened but already written about to the extent that this post is definitely ‘late’, does Taiwanese ‘xiao chi’, or small eats, as well as its eponymous fluffy pillows of delight. Its graduation from street food trader to brick and mortar site has been a smooth one – the operation is slickly run with very efficient handling of the queue (more on which later).

We ordered virtually the whole menu, a ‘reasonable’ amount according to the waitress – we called her bluff and added more as we went. Highlights of the small eats were the pigs blood cake and the trotter nuggets – the latter were gloriously fatty inside and perfectly crisp on the outside. Also worth ordering was the aubergine dish – a nice counterbalance to all the rich, meaty goodness. The much discussed aged beef rump cap was also a must, the quality of the beef evident hence the dainty portion for £6. Less necessary was the mushroom dish: it was still good, though, it’s just all relative isn’t it.

I though I was going to enjoy the small bites more than the baos. How wrong I was. We had 8 between 3 and all were impressive: the classic and confit pork ones had similar flavour profiles but were texturally different due to crispy shallots (yes please) on the latter. The lamb was slow cooked to a melt in the mouth quality – always a winner. However it was the fried chicken bao that was the real game changer. I have no clue what the unique looking bun is made of, but the fried chicken inside was ridiculous. Get multiple and get it on its own as a small bite as well – they’re well worth with the spicy sauce.

Was it worth the queue of 1 hour from about 6.30pm? That’s for you to decide – personally, given the ridiculous number of excellent restaurants within a 5 minute walking distance, I would say maybe not. That’s not to say the food wasn’t excellent, though. Maybe just take turns, or make sure whoever you go with is bloody good company.

Keeping it short, Bao London has settled for solid ground after starting as a pop up over at Netil Market (for around a year). Queues at Netil Market can be seen time and time again in the media, rapidly becoming one of the best, if not, the best Gua Bao’s in London. The Confit Pork Bao was my favourite for the night, with shaved shallot, pork belly braised really well, soft and tender, complementing the steamed buns very well.

2015 is proving to be a hot year for Asian cuisine in the capital, already we have seen a host of new openings including Engawa (Kobe beef imported from Japan), Bo Drake and Jin Juu modern Korean inspired dishes), On The Bab (adding a Covent Garden site to its popular Old Street based Korean restaurant), Duck and Rice (a Chinese gastropub by Alan Yau), amongst others. The most exciting for us however is Bao, serving up sumptuous Taiwanese street food whom we have followed religiously in their street stall guise at various locations over the last few years including Kerb, Netil Market and Feast.

Since its opening in April 2015, Bao has been the talk of the London dining scene. Whether it be papers or lifestyle mags, you seemingly can not turn a page without being hit with another rave review of their Soho venture. Social media is even more intense with almost daily reminders of the greatness of their iconic baos and the genius of the side dishes (I am guilty myself). All this has cumulated in a wave of sustained popularity as people clamour to get a much coveted table in their intimate dining room, some waiting for up to an hour come rain or shine. If that scares you, you're not alone; I shared the same trepidations; but having been, I can comfortably say it is well worth the wait.

It all starts with the "small" dishes designed to whet your appetite as dishes such as the pig blood cake with runny egg yolk, guinea fowl chi shiang rice, turnip tops with salted egg and aged beef rump cap with aged white soy sauce send your tastebuds into a tailspin. Flavours have impact and though won't make a meal, does everything to enhance it. The key dish though is the scallops with yellow bean garlic which is incredible - don't forget to drink the sauce.

But this is just all foreplay for what we all come for; they are called Bao for a very good reason. Here is where indecision hell really kicks in as every single item looks good enough to get two of. The temptation to order them all is almost too hard to ignore but today, I settled on the lamb shoulder bao and a fried chicken bao with a twist, ordering it in a FRIED bao. Pure indulgence. Both were, as expected, beautiful with mind-blowing flavour combinations - the lamb with garlic mayo, coriander sauce and soy marinated jalapeño was wow and the chicken with Sichuan chilli oil infused mayo with kimchi was equally incredible.

But all that said and done, it is the dessert of Horlicks ice cream in a fried bao that is really becoming the icon of Bao. It is perfect in its simplicity and provides a satisfying end to a spectacular meal. A must for any visit.

There is a reason that even now Bao remains so popular. - it is that good! For those scared off by the wait, just bite the bullet and go because there won't be a better time. You won't be disappointed.

I finally made it!!

I hate queuing. London has a thing for queues and everyone's okay with it. Why?? Why do I have to wait 2 hours to get food!? Yes, I can throw a hissy fit when it comes to queues.

But here I was queuing up for Bao. The newest craze to hit London. Those delicious steaming buns of goodness that you can't get enough of. We waited for an hour to get into this modest, clean cut, modern and expertly designed establishment. Was the food worth the wait? ABSOLUTELY!

My favourite was the fried chicken Bao but my friends had the fried version of the classic Bao ( yes! You can do that too!) and they were speechless. This is one place you should definitely save time and space in your tummy!

I had 4 baos and quite a few sides so we were all KO'd. A word of caution: the sizes aren't as big as they look in the photo so you may find yourself ordering seconds or even thirds...?

I hope the craze for this place dies down soon and people stop queuing just so I can go in whenever I want and have it ALL TO MYSELF! Yes, I'm being completely selfish and I don't care 😝

If you hate queueing then don't go around peak lunch or dinner times. Try 3pm or 9pm as you will get in much quicker! Ogle at these photos and drool....

Imagine it's a Monday evening, you've actually had a great day at work (social media would you please stop fuelling the Monday dread). The sun has decided to shine and it's time to take a trip to Soho in search of an adventure. What do you stumble across? Bao. Lucky for you, this might just be the tastiest place in town right now, and you haven't really stumbled across it, you've made a bloody great beeline!

Now, I must make a teeny little confession. I knew I was going to love it before I'd even left the office. Many of my favourite writers, bloggers, pals etc have camped (queued) outside since it opened a couple of weeks ago to be first in line for the fluffy wonders inside and (quite rightfully) were unable to contain their excitement. Bao, the Taiwanese triumph has found itself a permanent location, tucked into a shop on Lexington St in Soho. Having previously held spots as a street food vendor at Netil Market and Kerb, they know their buns are brill and so do many others (the demand is still going strong, so expect queues). This also might have something to do with the miniature space, but I am a big promoter of 'the best things come in small packages' - being a mini thing myself, it's very important that we have excellent PR!

For those of you who haven't tried out the gua bao or hirata bun (also found at Flesh & Buns, Beer & Buns and Yum Bun - see a theme here?), Bao is next in line to rock the boat, and that it definitely does. I would choose these pillowy mouthfuls of wonder over a burger (or actually most things) any day!

Hold your horses, there's more. On our little trip, we decided against ordering everything (perfect excuse to return time and time again), and strayed off the beaten track, away from the bao and towards the Trotter Nuggets (£4) .. mouthfuls of stringy, melt in the mouth meaty goodness.

Back on the (soon to be) well trodden path, we turned our attention to the bao's. The Fried Chicken Bao (£5) with soy milk marinated chicken, Sichuan mayo and golden kimchi was my winner, just superb.

I have another confession to make. This was our second dinner. Talk about indulgent, but we were on an adventure! After a brief stop-off at Shakafuyu to fill half our stomachs .. yes, I shall definitely need to return for absolutely everything else on the menu there, we made it over to Bao to complete the route (this should explain our miniature selection and speedy route to dessert).

And off it was to the Fried Horlicks Ice Cream Bao (£4). Wow. This is a messy affair and don't hang around letting it melt. Although exactly the same dough is used, the frying and condensed milk adds a sweetness which transforms the savoury bun into something not unlike a doughnut filled with the creamy, Horlicks (don't be put off, this is a great alternative to vanilla) ice cream.

As usual, the dining equipment caught my eye, just look at these delightful pouring devices (otherwise known as jugs), containing Ancient Mountain Sake (£6) (you can't really come here and neglect it). Also on offer is Oolong tea which shall also be on my list for the inevitable return.

It is wonderfully refreshing to find an interior so simply effective with its total lack of distressed brick work, distracting antiques and exposed piping, (shock horror, I might have jumped on the anti-exposed band wagon I've been resisting for so long). Bao eludes a sense of calm, where the staff don slick white jackets and the entire room feels moulded from a soft wooden box. Even within the buzzing atmosphere, you can breathe a sigh of relief.

After the much anticipated wait, Bao has finally opened their Soho restaurant!
Like their streetfood stalls, they still serve their pillowy soft cloudy steamed buns but with a wider variety of fillings, and the addition of a range of Taiwanese small dishes.
I managed to pop in for lunch on their second day since opening, after scrolling through my Instagram feed the night before which was bombarded with endless drool-worthy photos.

I ordered the peanut milk, which came served with ice in a small glass - it was really tasty and refreshing, and I could have easily downed a couple more glasses.

Their menu is divided into three categories: 'Xiao Chi' ("small eats"), Bao, and Sides.
The scallop was fresh with fragrant flavours from the yellow bean garlic. I find soup dishes very comforting, and I would highly recommend the beef soup, which seems to be a favourite amongst many who have tried it. The aubergine was really soft and smooth, and it was fun to eat it with the crispy pieces of wonton skin.

Their pig blood cake which many had raved about was actually really tasty. After watching multiple videos and 'before and after' shots of that gooey egg yolk, I finally tried it for myself. It had a pleasant texture, and it was really moreish - another favourite from the menu!
The trotter nuggets had a light and crisp golden coating with deliciously tender meat inside - so good that I had the whole dish to myself.
The guinea fowl chi shiang rice was topped with a bright yellow egg yolk which was great to eat mixed together with the rice.

We ordered three different savoury baos - lamb shoulder, confit pork and the fried chicken. I have only ever had their classic bao from their market stall, so it was nice to try a few more variations, all of which I enjoyed. It was hard to choose, but my favourite amongst the three was probably the confit pork bao.

And of course I couldn't pass out on dessert which was the Fried Horlicks Ice Cream. It was interesting to see Horlicks being used which was more of a childhood drink for me. It is however not the easiest thing to eat without getting your fingers smothered in melted ice cream...
At the end we washed it all down with some foam cold-pressed tea which was really refreshing.

The food has definitely lived up to the hype and it is of no surprise that there have been queues of people outside.
I will be back for more...

I made my way over to Bao about 30 minutes after it opened - beat the crowds and all that; stay ahead of the game. No such luck. I joined the back of the (admittedly fast moving) queue, got me some water from Pret, and stared longingly at Clerkenwell Boy's food both through the window and on his Instagram feed.

The foodie world was out in force, and Instagram was overrun by Baos and Blood Cakes for the rest of the day. One of London's finest food writers Ed Smith (Rocket & Squash) was also one of the first through the door, and he put up another of his reliably witty and informative posts the next day, rendering this irrelevant.

I'll soldier on. Bao built up a loyal following whilst trading at Kerb, Netil Market and the like, and their tiny Soho site is surely the first of many. Like Yum Bun and Beer & Buns, they focus on gua bao - super squishy steamed buns of joy filled with all manner of delights. Take along a pair of googly eyes and you'll soon have something resembling Pacman stuffing his face.

But that's not all. It seems they had a few Taiwanese tricks up their sleeve that they were saving for a permanent site. I'm talking Trotter Nuggets (£4), Scallops with Yellow Bean & Garlic Sauce (a little small for £3.50), and the room-dividing Century Egg with Eryngii Mushroom (£4).

The two non-bao dishes you absolutely must get are the 40 Day Aged Rump Cap with Aged White Soy Sauce (£6) and the much-photographed Pig Blood Cake (£3.50) - see #eggporn collage below. How we managed to share these two without trading blows, I'll never know.

Of course, you need to get some gua bao down you too. The Classic (Braised Pork, Peanut Powder, Fermented Greens, Coriander) is already an essential Soho snack at £3.75. Be sure also to get the stunning Fried Chicken Bao, presented in burger form in a soft Sesame Bao, with Soy Milk Marinated Chicken, Sichuan Mayo and Golden Kimchi. Confit Pork, Lamb Bao and veggie Crumbed Daikon Bao are ready on the subs bench.

Don't leave without ordering the Fried Horlicks Ice Cream Bao (Horlicks Ice Cream, Condensed Milk, Fried Bao) for £4, and eat it AS SOON AS IT ARRIVES. By the time I'd done my offensive blogger photography, we had a sticky, gooey mess on our hands. Delicious but disastrous.

So the food is incredible. What about the drinks? I went for some BaoZhong Foam Tea which I didn't agree with at all. I would instead opt for the 10 year Aged Coal Baked Oolong which sounds magnificent. Elsewhere, three types of Sake, Cider and Beer should be enough to see you through since Bao dining is a speedy affair.

How Bao? Go Now.

BAO's street-to-shop story is commendable; the restaurant itself may look like a modern-day yum cha house but its very essence is still rooted in its humble beginnings. It's cheap, cheery and rather delicious in a no non-sense way and I hope it stays the same for a very long time.

Really enjoyed the classic bao. The buns were really pillowy and I want to lie in a bed made of it. The pork filling was melt in your mouth and the sauce was exactly how I'd hoped it would be: a nice balance of sweet and savoury reminiscent of my favourite asado siopao from Taiwanese yum cha houses in Hong Kong and in Philippines. The fried bao with Horlicks ice cream is yummy, too.

Best sides: Taiwanese fried chicken and house salad. Skip the rump cap.

So Bao finally opened in Soho! I first tried Bao when I visited Netil Market a couple of months ago and walked past thinking what's that queue for? A queue is definitely a good sign! I joined the queue and ordered my first classic pork bun and Taiwanese fried chicken. Ever since then I had fallen in love with their soft fluffy buns.

We arrived there around 6pm on opening day, luckily we didn't have to wait for long to be seated, the staff were really friendly and gave us an order slip whilst we queued so we could take a look, which helped to speed up the ordering process when we got our table. I think it's a very efficient way to place an order, simply put a number beside the dishes and you're done!

We were seated after 10-15 minutes, along the bar table in a cosy corner. There are hooks under the table and around the restaurant for you to hang your belongings. We filled in our order slip and handed it to the staff, and the side dishes arrived in under 10 minutes. Just as we finished off the sides, the baos arrived! Service is fairly quick, and staff were very helpful in recommending what dishes to order.

For sides we ordered the scallops with yellow bean garlic, 40 day aged rump cap and Taiwanese fried chicken. The scallops were cooked just right and the rump cap was tasty too! My favourite is the fried chicken, it was crispy and goes well with the hot sauce.

We ordered the classic pork bun with peanuts and the lamb shoulder. The buns were very fluffy, the pork and lamb was super soft. The two went so well together. I could have eaten two buns but I resisted in order to save room for the fried Horlicks ice cream! I usually drink Horlicks but never thought about having it as an ice cream flavour! You get a nice hint of the flavour coming through. We had no problem finishing off this dessert.

We also ordered a glass of peanut milk, it had a fairly strong peanut taste and not too sweet.

If you want soft fluffy buns, this is the place to go to.

Taiwanese tapas! This is what food made by Taiwanese hipsters is like! Creative takes on Taiwanese 小吃 (small eats) by people who actually care about Taiwanese food deep in their souls. The menu is hilarious. They have Taiwan Beer which is nostalgic to me. Come here for drinks and some snacks in good company. Sit at the bar! Don’t come here looking to make a meal of it (in my opinion). Treat it more like sampling night market food. It’s not extremely comfortable in the restaurant, but neither is sitting on little plastic stools in the back alleys of Taipei (and I’ll do that any time!) It not about comfort, it’s about the food!

The highlight for me was the peanut milk. It is so refreshing. The baos are very good and the fried chicken. The mushrooms were too salty. Small space but we were seated quickly without a reservation, so that was great!

The BAO that started it all - I remember the queue snaking around the corner just to get in just a few years back, which is luckily no longer the case - but do book in advance. While the food is still excellent, I can’t help but feel that success has dimmed this chain’s light. Everything we had was delicious, especially the pickles, bao buns, and aubergine dip; also, the sauce next to the nuggets was out of this world - I’d have a whole plate of it if it was an option. The drinks were nice - we had the yakult float and peanut milk; I’d recommend the latter for dessert as it’s quite sweet. So why the lost star? First, portion size - the dishes are tiny and entirely unsuitable for sharing. Even the “larger” ones, like the Guinea fowl bowl, had barely any fowl and provided maybe five bites between the two of us. Very little value for money. Secondly, the service - some of the starters came so late we’d already finished our mains, and the waiters never came to check in on us. It took about 20 minutes before we were even approached. And lastly, our seats were low, uncomfortable, and in the way of the staff. So while BAO continues to offer top-notch Taiwanese in the capital, I’m afraid the customer is no longer at the heart of what they do. I’m glad they’re doing well, but the experience was alienating - and I’ve been to several BAO locations so can sadly say it’s this way across the board. Here’s hoping they remember why they started the place - to give people yummy food and introduce their culture to the world.

I’ve been to the Borough Bao, and always wanted to go to the original. It’s exactly how I hoped it would be. Small and a great atmosphere. This Bao has a much quicker service time than Borough, we were able to sit down straight away, we were asked within a couple of minutes what we would like. And the food came quickly. Loved it, obviously the food was great, I’ve not had a disappointment with their food. Thanks :)

Decided to try this restaurant with a friend and I have to say it was extremely good! ✨ Staff were friendly and explained things and I tried bao buns and scallops for the first time! We got 3 of the smalls dishes to share between us (scallops, trotter nuggets and mushrooms) and then I got the duck special bao and the fried chicken bao with the duck being my favourite 🙌🏻 It’s a little on the expensive side but all of the food despite being small, was delicious!

One of the best spots for solo dining in Soho if you want a quick bite before heading out later. The Pig Blood cake and the Horlicks ice cream BAO were particularly good.

Overall rating: 5 As a tourist coming from NYC, these are the best bao buns I’ve ever had in my life. On my last day, I saw another location near borough market & was so happy to see it again after being denied the infamous chocolate covered strawberries 🥹 $10 USD for ONE bao bun is absolutelllyyy insane. But 1 millionth percent worth it. I will admit, I was struggling a bit with liking London. But boy, oh boy, I would come back here in a heartbeat. Bao will always have a special place in my heart. Highly recommend!

The baos were lovely and tasted authentic. They had a wide range on the menu. The waitress was also friendly and helpful. Only issue being that the tables and seats at the back are incredibly cramped and people cannot get through. I had to sit almost back to back with customers behind me.

On a wet afternoon, I walked into this Taiwanese-inspired Xiaochi House. They super friendly arranged for me to take a seat by the window, and next to the lonely man sign. This small corner gives me enough personal space to enjoy my own food. I watched the hustle and bustle of people in Soho, here, I was able to take a break from the moiling and enjoy the pleasant moment... Soon the Xiaochi was served one by one, so exquisite and artistic, like a performer on stage. The small counter is their stage. In this performance, there are a total of 7 performers. I'm both a diner and an audience. The scallop completely absorbs the soup without fishiness, fat and juicy with a rich taste. I tried to use the soft milky Bao bun to dip the rest of the gravy that instantly sucked up, rolling a little bit of seaweed powder on the edge of the shell plate, which was another tasty flavor. The crispy skin and tender meat of Guinea Fowl are closely connected, and the rice mixed with the egg yolk, just a mouthful, which impelled dopamine suddenly released, and the euphoria value soars. The Pig Blood Cake is chewy and bouncy, and its curtain call brings a full stop to this lunch. Perhaps some diners will pay great attention to tracing the origin of food. Whether the food is authentic seems one of the important criteria. But in any case, the most authentic thing can hardly be separated from that place and the people there. So in my view, in the melting pot of London, it is not so important whether the food is authentic or not, what matters is the heart and sincerity it contains, and the creativity!

I loved the ambiance of the spot. The vibe is very simple, minimalistic, but packed with a lot a spirit which is also a characteristic of their bao. Imagine my shock when something so simple could pack that much flavor. Definitely worth the value and I highly recommend it.
