Excellent fish and chips! The site was so well decorated. Congrats
A quite busy place (but with a very lovely atmosphere, great decorations and a really nice staff) serving the best Fish&Chips (even packed in a newspaper!) in London. You’ll love it! ♥️

If you want to taste authentic fish and chips , then poppies is your destination. Small place, always full, the smell is nice, portions are big and the taste great. And at the end some candies. Highly recommended
Some say it’s the best fish and chips in london. It was good but the battered sausage was much better would recommend that instead.
Portion sizes are big so shareee
It was a great coincidence for us that the restourant was managed by the people where we are coming from :) we tried fried haddock and cod fish, it was quite big and filling. Even it was fried, it wasnt that heavy and oily. They served green pea - not remember exact name- together with fish. Suggest u to try
Interiors and decorations is very good .decor is excellent I love there sea food platter . ambiance is very good staff service is good
One of the best place for fast food in brick lane london
Love the decor! Strong vintage feel and unpretentious. Food wise: liking the hot seafood platter a lot (esp whitebait and scampi) as for the fish, to me they’re okay but not as tasty as those other two.
Really love this place. The food was very good, the staff was very helpful.
Order a fish and chips and came really quickly.
Love the decorationand the music.
Good relation price/quality.
Definitly a place to come back.
The prices here in zomato are not the real ones, everything is 1/2 £ more expensive that the prices that are showed here.
Good environment, really nice decor! The food comes really fast and it's really good! Normally, I'm not a fan of Fish&Chips, but I really digged this one!
In a nutshell amazing fish and chips (apparently the best in UK ) loved the home made tartar sauce.
We were introduced to this place on a food walking tour and the only dish we had was the fish and chips ! It was simply amazing and everybody in the group loved it! I personally felt the tartar sauce added an extra zing to the experience.
The staff was friendly and quick. I would definitely recommend this place !
Visited with a group of friends for a work lunch. The place was pretty empty, but service still took ages. Most people ordered cod and chips. I ordered two saveloys and chips, which for some reason confused the waiter as it only had one saveloy and chips on the electronic ordering system. Over complicating the process I think.
The food, when it finally arrived, was very good. Chips were excellent and the fish I was told, was also good. Saveloys were good too, but for some reason came with gravy. Gravy's not really a London tradition with chips, or saveloys for that matter, so that was weird. They also cut up the gherkins and pickled eggs. Again, just weird. They put a little jar of ketchup on your plate rather than the traditional bottle or squeezy plastic tomato. This is a neat trick to give you less chips. And not enough ketchup.
The prices are pretty steep. People say 'London prices', but it's only fish and chips, not Masterchef. I like how in Soho they took away all the traditional cafes and chip shops, replaced them with hipster versions of the same thing, and then charge three times the price for the privilege. Very clever.
Fish and chips was one of the original fast foods. Poppies have turned it into a marathon rather than a sprint. It tastes good though, so I give 5 stars for the food, but marks knocked off for the speed of service and price.
Fresh cod and SUPERR DUPERRR BIG 👌👌👌 i just ordered the regular one.. can not imagine how big is tge large one 😄
Crispy and tender juicy inside..
Best fish n chip in London
For sure the best fish and chips in town. Tried before the one in Camden Town and the same quality was served. Codfish is fried but well dried not having the greasing taste. Keep it that way!
Soft and moist fish with crispy batter on the outside while it's not overly greasy. I don't think the fish itself has any seasoning as it was quite bland but the texture was great. I don't mind adding a bit of salt to the fish myself. The tartar sauce is a must! We later on found out there is also a Poppies at the Spitalfields market on the weekend with much cheaper price. Of course it's a food court style. Highly recommend this place for fish and chips in London.
Be a Goan and Fish being my weakness and my stay in London started here Really good fish and chips with good portions in a great retro cafe setting. Excellent service and good value. All washed down with a nice cup of tea.
I happened to stumble upon this small outlet of poppies .. you have two option either dine in or just take away your fish and chips .. which I did .. this place is famous for this typical British food ..
I had the cod fish and chips .. though the quantity looks small it is quite filling .. the fish was very soft and we'll cooked, seasoned .. chip to my surprise were not soggy at all .. all in all if you want to have British food this doesn't get more Brit than this .. worth trying ..
Legacy and a touch of British culture; our food tour squeezed in both at our stopover at Poppies. The tour company’s pretty thoughtful, my aversion to seafood was easily managed with a substitution to a vege pasty and they take care with any dietary requirements too. Rumour has it that the fish was good so I’ll take the group’s word for it. I enjoyed my half-a-pastie, a nice mix of veges and a buttery, rich crust. There’s a good-sized crowds of chips but they wasn’t my favourite – the potato tasted a bit drier to the ones I really dig (literally) back home. I come from a potato town, so I’ve always grown with great quality ones and in great abundance. One other very British icon -mushy peas- came along to mixed reactions of the table. It’s weird but inoffensive to me.
Highly recommend this spot for fish and chips in London! Even the mushy peas were delicious! I absolutely loved the vintage colourful decoration and the waitresses' outfits. The fish and chips to-go are traditionally wrapped in a newspaper just like the old days, but did you know that they're marked with edible ink!? Tradition with a twist ;)

Very very good... fishes and chips are so delicious. And the atmosphere is amazing. You have to try this restaurant. And Turks waiters are supppeeeerrr!!!!
Such a nice place to have fish and chips! The food is tasty and the place has a cool decor and nice atmosphere! The waiters are incredibly professional and helpful. Highly recommended!
Recommended by a friend and was not disappointed at all .Went for traditional fish and chips and quality and taste was perfect .Really enjoyed and would recommend Poppies Fish and Chips without any hesitation .
Supposed to be reviewing Poppies in Old Compton Street, but didn't find it there. They said that Poppies wont let you down with their Traditional Fish & Chips. So I decided to give it a try. I ordered Haddock Regular.
Turned out that the fish is good. I like the texture. Not too soft but not too hard as well. I add a little salt cause felt that the batter was too plain.
The interior is very cute. British Rockers would love it here I guess.
Fish & Chips – the glorious signature of English fast food that everyone all over the world knows. It pretty much represents a lot about the UK and of course carries a lot of tradition and history with it. Poppies is a traditional fish-and-chip shop that’s known to deliver a traditional and high quality fish & chips around London. I visited their branch located by Spitalfields. This particular branch is decorated in a very 1950s-retro diner style. Even the staffs were all dressed up in a diner uniform. The restaurant offers both eat-in and takeaway service – you can either pick a diner experience or a traditional fish & chips takeaway experience where your meal is wrapped with a copy of historic newspaper and then placed into a newspaper printed box.
The day and age of decent fish and chips being found in every neighbourhood is well and truly over. Sadly good quality fish and chips has become a rarity. This time round I was in Spitalfields for some good old fashioned fish and chips from Poppies of Spitalfields and Camden. Poppies cod and chips ain't cheap at
Hi eaters. Let me start by saying that for a portuguese guys it's really weird to eat fresh cod fish, we are used eat salty cod fish. But the english fish & ships delecasy us quite nice. And poppies is a great place to try it. They will fill your place with food and you must try the mashed peas. Its amazing, even who don't like peas will like it (true story). Hope you like to eat here as much as I did. Keep on biting.
Great fish and chips, nice ambience, better option to go to rather than the Camden branch.
Try the haddock and chips. Delicious comfort food especially on a cold day.
Good fast and friendly service. I enjoyed the meal but being from Aus we usually crumb our fish I prefer but the batter was good and fish was fresh so was good to eat. The chips were decent nothing to rave about though. Overall good experience but nothing above average.
Excellent fish (cod haddock) and chips. The batter of the fish was the best part - crispy, thin and not oily. The fish was fresh and firm. Also had the jellied eels which was very interesting and the homemade mushy peas was a little bland but fresh. The serving size was big. I'm glad that they won the Best Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant in the UK in 2014, because they deserved the title.
The second you walk into Poppies, you are happy and excited to be there. The friendly and patient staff is very cheerful and accommodating. As someone who has never had Fish N Chips, I found that I had arrived at the ultimate place. Dining with a London native, I was told that these were in fact the best Fish and chips he had ever encountered in his 32 years living and growing up in London. I couldn't agree more. The presentation, atmosphere, and taste of the food was mouth-watering and left me wanting more. (Even though I was already stuffed from the large portion). As someone who adores french fries, these are on my top 5 best fries list to date!
Sono stato per 2 volte in periodi differenti e posso confermare l'alta qualità delle pietanze servite.
Se andate a Londra vi consiglio di mangiare qua.
Poppies has twice delivered me the best fish & chips of my life. They have loads of unique fish options, the fish pieces are huge (I did choose large but still) and the batter is beautifully crisp and grease-free. The chips portion is ridiculously generous and they are the perfect chippy chips! Super fluffy with a slight taste of groundnut oil but, again, not greasy. There will always be a queue at peak times but it moves very quickly. Only reason I've given it a 4 instead of a 5 is that I really don't like the interior; for me it's definitely just a great take-away vs restaurant. You can read my full review on my blog :)
Hi I am Dwane. I like this, strong fishy smell takes me back to good old day.
Place has character. The place has a lively atmosphere with a cleanly executed 50s theme. Whether you dine-in or take away, you are sure to enjoy the crispy fish and hot piping chips. However, I feel the real gem that is hidden underneath the fish and chips craze is their sticky toffee pudding. The place is all about preserving past traditions so why not play along and order a traditional dessert too?
The best fish and chips I've ever had. Great service and fantastic decor. Loved it
Faux 1950s decor. Casual but attentive staff. Great fish and chips. It's also licensed, serving a couple of interesting beers. In an area of bland choices -since the tragic sterilisation of spitalfields- Poppies stands out as a great choice
Having lived in East London for well over a year and heard only truly excellent things about Poppies , fish and chips became the menu for the evening rather quickly. Poppies is pretty famous in our end of London town, as one of the oldest and most popular chippies in London (the reviews speak for themselves – take a look at tripadvisor ), so it’s fair to say we were pretty excited to finally be checking out their grub for ourselves.
Word on the street is Poppies serve the best hot chips around so we snacked up with chip butties and ate them on the sidewalk. These were proper fat, crispy chips. I know double carbs sounds all kinds of wrong but it’s just so dang good.
Standing in complete contrast is Poppies Fish and Chips over by Spitalfields. Bright, airy, clean, and disconcertingly stylish too with an American diner theme it invited that question. Was it style over substance or a perfect marriage of the two? An evening visit to the nearby Whitechapel Gallery provided the opportunity to discover the answer.
It’s no surprise then that there’s a queue out the door and along Hanbury Street this Friday lunch time, as people want to get their #FishFryday fix at this 1940s East End style restaurant (seems more like American diner theme now) complete with juke box.
Poppies serves delicious fish and chips in a city full of restaurants serving excellent fish and chips....
The menu is pretty much similar to most of the fish and chips kind of restaurants that I have visited...
I ordered a huge piece of cod with chips and ended with the sticky toffee pudding with strawberry ice cream.... the batter on the fish was light and crisp, the fish fresh and tender. The pudding was soft, the sauce and ice cream perfect. Just what you would expect from a restaurant serving fish and chips.
Im giving this restaurant a rating of 5 because the food and service were both excellent even though you can get these dishes in many other restaurants. Sometimes getting the simple things right is the most difficult to do..Poppies is not that different, but they get the food and service right....that's important.
A visit here took my mind to movie scenes from the 70's /80's that had waitresses in diners wearing polka dotted calf length frocks fitted by a bow at the back, and in-your-face (in a good way) bright makeup, the juke box playing some good ol music in the background.. :D Went here on a Saturday night so the place was packed to capacity and we had to wait a couple of minutes for a table. Poppies was recommended to us as the go-to place for the British classic - Fish n chips. They have a choice of cod or haddock as the fish to be used in your order (same price for either). We decided on the haddock for our regular sized order of fish n chips. Great portion size... could not finish fish or chips! It was really good too. Must go here if you want to sample authentic Fish n chips...the way it was meant to be. We also ordered a fish cake as a small side order but I wasn't too impressed with that.. it was much too bland for my liking. However, there were many seemingly regular folks who we saw order it. In here was the first time I drank a cream soda and boy oh boy did I love it! Perfect with my fish n chips. Nice cozy place for some comfort food over some good old music.
Classic fish and chips in a neo-retro restaurant. Traditional newspaper style wrapping, waitresses in 50s dress and decor to match. Serving traditional chip shop food ranging from jellied eels to pickled gherkins.
If one thing is true about Poppies it's that they make a damn fine piece of fried fresh cod.
The chips are thick cut yet crunchy, battered sausage again nice and crispy. You will have your food in a matter of minutes, I try not to dine in, take a hike down brick lane and burn some of the calories that Poppies are kindly donating to you.
Finding great Fish & Chips in London you would think is easy... Since returning to the capital six months ago it's been a challange. Frozen watery fish, anaemic chips and all very inconsistent.
Thank goodness we found Poppies, the queue out the door was a good sign; then smiling helpfully faces as you go into the very well presented American Diner style restraurant.
Light and crispy batter surrounds thick white flakey cod, it's absolutely brilliant; crispy hot chips that actually taste like potatoes!
If you want proper fish and chips, this is the place to go, we'll be back soon!
Next stop - a chip pie. Poppies is very new to the area and was not there a year ago but it was doing a roaring trade to those who thought it may have been here for centuries. Yes, chips and battered savs are an important part of East London's history but this place had no soul. The guys inside wore the right uniforms but so do the people working in themed restaurants. We should have stopped somewhere where the owner shouts at you to either order or 'get out' - his words not mine. More on that in my review of Broadway Market.
Dressed up like in a theme park
But get chips we did. They were good but nothing spectacular as most chips tend to be. And FYI travellers - there is a difference between hot chips (known as chips) and bags of chips (crisps). A great way to start a chat in a pub.
Fish and Chips as it should be.
A great bastion of British cuisine served exactly as you would expect and hope.
Come to Poppies and get the full range of fish, and get it in a delightful little joint with a classic retro 50's vibe. Run by Pops Newland since time began, a character who has been serving this type of fare all his life. (If he hasn't, it certainly tastes like he has).
The perfect combo or crunchy batter and tender fish. The chips are crispy but fluffy, I mean, does it get any better than that for British food?
The beauty of Poppies is not just in the food and the experience, but also in the sustainability of the fish.
Does this place have it all?
It has become hard nowadays to find a good fish and chips shop, one which doesn't serve disgusting kebabs along with it. However, if ever you pass by Spitalfields, just off Liverpool Street, there is still hope for you thanks to the black white Poppies fish bar. Now the food actually served by Poppies i would not say is exceptional beyond the norm. The fish is tasty, the chunky chips are classically delicious and the portions more than reasonable. Overall, this is a very good fish and chips. The main quality of this restaurant is that is appears to always be quite clean. The staff, unlike many other fishies, make an effort to keep the restaurant clean and shiny at all times. This breaks the traditional view that i fish and chips has to be a "dirty" meal.
Negatives here are perhaps the queues which can get quite long and the price which, for many, is too high.
Enjoy!
ps: Don't forget to put Salt and Vinegar on your fish and chips. really enhances the whole experience!
Ever since I got to try out their fish & chips in their Camden Town branch years back, Poppies had since become my favourite go to restaurant for fish and chips. I visited this branch in Aug 2022 for the very first time and it didn't disappoint. The food here is just as good and the interior design is full of character. The waiters were very friendly and even showed me the entire ground floor area as well as the basement, giving me more photo taking opportunity which I truly appreciate. It was a very pleasant experience where me n my partner were able to immerse ourselves in another world of delicious authentic English fish & chips as well as surrounded by all the charming little objects on display. Can't wait to go back again the next time I'm in London.
Good fish & chips, very yummy sticky toffee pudding, old school deli feel.
We tried their jellied eel, seafood platter, Haddock & chips. All seafood is fresh and nicely fried, with thick chunky chips. Ended the meal with a pudding each, which we enjoyed.
Recommended.
We arrived at Poppie’s around 4pm on a Sunday afternoon and the kitchen was open: great. They served us the classical Haddock fish & chips. The fish was tender and fresh, crispy on the outside. The chips were just bad but had a good tartar sauce.
Nice little restaurant that has lots of fish items on the menu. It is a USA 1950s like diner and music. The food was good but a tad higher than what we’ve been paying in other places for similar food and drinks.
Great Fish and Chips! Great atmosphere! Service was great!
I ordered the large Cod with fries my wife got the haddock.
I read a few reviews saying not enough tartar sauce and the servers aren't very attentive so I combatted it by ordering extra tartar and 2 drinks and had a wonderful meal.
Three tartar was perfect for 2 large orders of fish and chips.
We wanted to share with each other but enjoyed the meal so much we didnt end up sharing!
You must order the sticky toffee putting 10/10 was perfect. I would have licked the plate clean if the restaurant wasn't so full.
We had to wait for two other couples ahead of us due to the amount of turnover they have. Good food expect to have to wait. Probably why the servers can't aren't as attentive as some of the other restaurants.
The price was higher forsure but still worth is.
If I were to go back I'd probably just order what I knew was good fish and chips and sticky toffee putting!
Mushy peas and steak pie were good but as expected nothing to write home about.
Another nice and cosy place for Fish and Chips. Had Cod and chips, which met expectations but the price has gone up a bit. Service is prompt and excellent. Wished there’s more tartar sauce. Would return again.
Good greeting staff and generous portions.
Poppies feels like an institution of a fish and chips restaurant that is loved by locals. I was able to get a table without wait and my food arrived in 5 minutes. It was nice to see and the condiments and spices and sauces already on the table. The fish was very big and the batter was very crispy and the fish was very soft. The chips were thick and crunchy but soft on the inside. The food stayed hot for a good amount of time. A very good fish and chips.
Ordered the infamous jellied eels and a cod and chips. The difference between the haddock and cod is as described by the staff: the former is more flavourful. The large fish and chips is also much more economical to share.
As for the jellied eels, if I'm honest, they may be worth trying but in general may not be worth 10 quid to most. They are chunks that are bone-in and very tender. But they are served cold and the combination of the taste may not suit many.
All in all, worth a visit, but you are certainly paying a premium for the styling of the venue.
Great fish and chips in a great atmosphere. My husband ordered large cod and I had the large haddock. Soooo good. I have only ever had baaaad mushy peas (in canada) and was delighted to try them here- definitely fresh and hearty- we also ordered a Steak Pie and it reminded me of my grandmothers cooking- so good. The real winner was the sticky toffee pudding. It was a great experience overall and I would love to come back.

Went to this place for brunch on a Saturday. I tried the fried cod fish and chips. The food was really good. The place good a really ambience and atmosphere. The service was okay and food was served on time. The resturent is located at very popular area and finding parking can be difficult depend on the day.
Visited London after 20 plus years and one of the things I wanted to have was a typical British fish and chips. I was warned of the dearth of what was the norm while I was a resident in London. And they were right. I found ne corner corner chippie but but sort of a harrowing experience. Ultimately on one of my last days came upon Poppies. And the wait was rewarded. Plaice and the chips were just like I remembered.worthwhile.
We stopped at Poppies for a quick lunch of fish & chips and were not disappointed. Service was fast and the food very good for the price and better than that served by some fancier places; the atmosphere is what you would expect, not fancy or romantic, but very convenient.
That's the place! Looks like a combo of classic american diner and British place at the same time. Stylish staff, nice old-school design and good food. I have chosen a fish from the first line and that was a good choice. Thank you for inspiration and nice fish 'n cheeps.
The restaurant is nice and the service is relatively fast. The fish and chips were delicious. We ordered the traditional fried fish and also the fish cakes. There was also additional salt, pepper and ketchup on the table.
Really cool dining experience for an authentic English fish and chips!
The calamari was good too.
Slightly pricey compared to the usual but the ambiance and location make up for it.
Service was friendly and quick!
Toilets could have been cleaner.
Would recommend if you’re in the area.
Simply loved the deco of the restaurant! Felt like being brought back to the 70-80s era 🤩. The fish is extremely fresh, crispy on the outside and yet tender in the inside. 😍
This is place is an institution in Spitalfields.
Fish and chips met our expectations. Good service. Classic fish and chips + mashed peas
Me and my family (3 person) ordered the calamari and chips for snack/brunch, and it was more than expected!! The taste was decent and price was affordable. Didn’t try the fish, but seems like the store is well-known for the fish&chips. It is also cheaper if you take-out than eating in. Overall, liked the experience at Poppies!!
