If you'd like to experience a real feel of a real pub atmosphere and forget (for a bit) that we're in the XXI century you cannot miss Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese! We are straight away pulled into the atmosphere and confortable nooks on the several levels of this fantastic space. The food is really confort food and of course the drinks do not disappoint at all!
You can spend long hours here enjoying with your friends or completing your college/ office work. This place makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. It's reasonable as well as spacious.
You will also find some parents along with their children enjoying their food here.
Do not miss on the yummy and hot food here.
Incredible atmosphere, almost like a time capsule from the far past (the pub was rebuilt there in 1667), with good beer, drinks and tasteful food. I specially liked the old wine cellar turned food court with the casks of amontillado and all. Fantastic.
Great historical pub, with all sorts of nooks and crannies! Friendly service and great atmosphere. Unfortunately toilets are disgusting, filthy.
My friends rated the food well
History is the main appeal of this pub, it is a tourist hot spot so it gets busy. The decor is what you would expect of an old English pub and the ale is good. It is as advertised
This place has very old history dated from the 17th century were it was rebuilt after the great London fire. One of the tiny rooms really looks like you are in a movie of a London pub 2 or 3 centuries ago with the mixed smell of the fireplace and the alcohol. Apart from that the food isn't great. My hamburguer was probably the worst I've ever had in a pub including the chips. But well it's definitely worth a visit for drinks with friends.
Loved the old old building and the ancient ambience. The mushrooms were a treat and so was the chocolate orange mousse. Great energy. Lovely ecpetience
One of the oldest pub in London, but full of regulars, not just tourists. The rooms are dim like you wait from an historic place, but this does not stop you from read and choose tasty food from their menu...my trio of sausages was very good, and so the chicken my partner had. Good choice of beers. Highly Recommended!
Beautiful pub, one of the oldest in London and I think also one of the nicer I've ever seen. Many rooms divided in more levels. Had a lovely lunch, with a fisherman's pie and an apple crumble with icecream.
Visited last month (april'2015) on our travels to london....This is as authentic as it gets...the place is several hundred years old....its in a quiet lane and inside its dark and dingy as you keep going down a couple of levels to reach the bar counter....the whos and who of historical london were regulars here...you can see pictures hanging on the dilapidated walls....
Absolutely nothing fancy but the feel of a vintage english pub inside out..
We had beer and fish&chips.....splendid...
The lady at the bar was very forthcoming too...
As tourists, this is exactly what we wanted to experience....!!! OLDE IS GOLDE :D
It was ok. The pub itself was really cool, but the pub food was juts ok. Drinks were good. Standard Pub with cool history but the food isn't incredible
What a Find. Sat where Dickins sat, however his talent did not rub off on me.
After attempting to find the Tube, I came upon the Cheese. I loved it for its history. The beer wqas great, supplemented by rather ordinary pub food. But what more do you want?
Great old pub. One of the best Historic pubs in London. Definitely worth a visit! They stock Sam Smiths also.
Samuel Smiths Sold Here!. If they sell Sam Smiths Beer, I'm a happy man. The finest pint in the world and its stupidly cheap.
Great.
...dark, gloomy, but somehow in spite its lack of lighting, fun. It rambles upwards and downwards, with a carpeted room with a hearth and cushy chairs at the top, and a stone cellar with rough wood furniture in the bottom.
You can also choose to have a sit here, where one could imagine living in another century. A genuine, authentic address, you must discover. Just for the design and atmosphere, it is worth stopping for at least a beer
Recommended to us by a former resident of London, England, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Pub is a real English pub, dripping in history and chock full of charm. And I really stress "real" English pub, this place is smack dab in the middle of Fleet Street, a bustling political hub and also home of the British Press from the 16th century all the way to the 1980s. Where else have you heard of Fleet Street? It's also the setting for many famous novels and movies, Sweeney Todd being one of them, and of course Charles Dickens has used Fleet Street as a setting for his books, most famously A Tale of Two Cities . We visited Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Pub after a visit to the Tate Modern ; it was only a short 20 minute walk from the museum. There's nothing quite like walking through the streets of London, every corner is steeped in history, the intricate and weathered architecture
It is one of the oldest pubs around here and I seriously came here with a curiosity to see how the old pubs of the city are doing. The place was dark and full of drinkers. There were pints and pints and pints all over. The main seating area was the loudest and that was the most fun place to be in.
This is one of the oldest place in London where you can surely enjoy your booze. This place is more like a complex than being a pub. The basement area is the best as it is neatest.
Their are pictures that how this place used to look back then so you sure can see the change.
The food is very good here , delicious and authentic too.
The place has an attractive and quirky flooring and a charming ambience. Ordered Fish and chips which were authentic, crisp and delicious, filling too! Beer was served well. The music in the background is subtle enough to let you have a good conversation. The place is definitely worth a visit!
I just had to visit this place since it's one of the oldest pubs in London. And as one of my friends told me, I loved each and every thing about this pub. The place is situated close by to my office and is very well decorated. This place has 3 bars and they serve incredible draught beers. We ordered some fish and chips which were exceptional and the prices were quite reasonable.
I recommend this place to everyone and would be visiting this place again really soon.
Some of my friends suggested me to visit this place a couple of months back, and I'm so glad that they did. It was a total English experience and I'm always going to be a big fan of the good old fish and chips. The English grub and the English beer tasted amazing. Would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good English dining experience,
Whether you are a tourist or a local wanting to enjoy with friends while all of you sip onto your favourite pint, this place will always be an enjoyable experience.
The place is old and rumoured to have had Dickens visit it earlier. Tucked away in a small alley, this place is surely a hidden treasure!
Do visit this [place for its delicious fish and chips. Truly blissful!
This pub is one of the oldest in the city, and I was delighted by my experience here.
The place can be difficult to locate as it is tucked into one side of an alley, and is easy to miss. It is built with three levels, and the stairs are tricky to descend. We found seats on the second level, and were charmed by the appearance of the setting. The ambiance was beautiful, dark and candle-lit, but lively at the same time, and feels historic in setting. The food and drinks are served at lowermost level, which was jam-packed unfortunately, but it is my favourite place. We ordered the fish and chips, which were absolutely perfect, and the best of my trip. I highly recommend a visit.
This is a great pub on the Fleet Street. The place offers good booze, is well kept and charges reasonable prices barring a a few specialties (be sure to check the price list). In general most drought, house wines and basic spirits are very cheap considering the location in central London. The pub has an old school vibe to it. I might say it is like a seventeenth century warren of a cellar with real character.
The restaurant is very nicely done with carpets and wall hangings and with a parrot in a cage in the middle of the restaurant. They have a well accomplished staff that goes out of their way to make the evening special. the food is delicious with snacks to die for. The prices are also reasonable.
This place is quite unique with its various rooms. It is an absolute must, to see all the rooms and soak in their beauty. We did not eat anything here, however went to experience it all. It was a lot of fun to sit in the nooks thinking about those who sat there before!
The personality and the vibe of this pub is as best as it can get, in fact it is one of the most interesting ones around. The interiors are not very spacious and little small but that is probably why it is the most amazing pub in the city! I mean who else has a large hole in the ground with various levels as a seating arrangement!
On top of all this unique decor, the place serves one of the best quality food ever.Must visit!
This place has low beams so you better watch your head while going in there, but this is the thing which makes this place worth visiting. It is nearest pub to my office, and I go there often.
The food is good and its quite easy on the pocket as well.
I would suggest this place for a quick pint or two and some good music.
When i visited here this place was pretty busy. The manager still managed to get a table for us which was pretty far from the atmosphere of this place. The bartenders were friendly and they were pretty efficient too.
The food was also very good , I had cottage pie and my partner had steak and ale pie which was very delicious , according to me and my partner.
This is somewhat a historical place and it is really fun eating in a place like this sometimes.
This little pub is literally a hidden gem. It is open till late hours and its location is perfect. The prices of drinks at this pub take you by surprise but it is all worth it. It is known for it master work of steel, art and wooden panels, this place is decent for an evening with friends.
This pub was recommended to us by a resident of this city only and i am glad that i went there. It had a very lively and vibrant atmosphere filled with good and classy crowd. The cocktails were innovative and great. Its a good place to go and enjoy a drink and two with a large group of friends.
If you are looking for a quick drink then this cellar can be considered as an option. It is a dark and gloomy place and you would not want to visit this place with a group of friends. There is no lighting and the furniture is worn out. You could even consider it a miss.
Went here for the history of the place and enjoyed myself. The beer was nice, served chilled, just as I like it. The food was average, but it didn't bother me because of the great historical relevance of the place o me. would love to go back sometime.
A rustic, another century concept to this place, it is interiorized in a way to give one feeling of being in another time. The place cannot be missed, the enticing atmosphere deserves a visit at least once. Stop by for food which is authentic and delicious or stop by for a beer!
The pub has been here for many years and has recently been rebuilt and renovated. The legacy and word of mouth is it has been a regular of the very famous Charles Dickens! To begin with, the menu has lot to offer classic fish, steak, chips, pies and lasagne dishes! Their beer is supplied by Samuel Smith Brewery! The place is enticing and enjoyable!
This is a amazing place to have couple of pints and enjoy wit your friends.
If you are planning on visiting here you must try swift wheat beer it is going to be a great experience for you. This place is really very special for me because I met a girl here who is the best thing that ever happened in my life.
Cheers guys :)
Visited here on a cold evening and was pleasantly surprised. The place is has a film set kinda look and that is great. It was quit in there too, despite all the noise on the street. Nice place to come and enjoy a quiet meal in cozy surroundings.
One of London's oldest pubs, you definitely get a sense of the history when you walk past the portrait filled walls and the medieval seating arrangements that have been host to some of the greatest writers in British history.
The setting is narrow and it can be hard to find a seat, but Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is one for the bucket list, providing you with an enormously unique experience and a chance to travel back in time.
I didn't had any food, just beer. This feels like a travel back in time, after all it's one of the oldest pubs in London! Multiple little rooms inside it's hard to find a space to sit, but still it's worth the visit.
I wanted to go to this pub so badly since I first heard of it. This place boasts an impressive medieval heritage- something you definitely get a vibe of when you pop in for a pint! The ambience did not disappoint, with stairs you had to limbo down, beams and ancient title deeds adorning the ceiling and walls. This place just oozed history, and is a happy 3 minute stroll from the office (hurrah!) Apart from the prime location and epic interior the other ++ was the cider & ales. I personally love a good Sam Smith's pub, having frequented my local many times over the years back in Yorkshire. If you haven't had the delight of a Sam Smith's ale, which a surprising amount haven't! You simply must give it a go, and what better venue for your merry-making than this? Okay given it's not the brewery pub in Sam Smith's local Tadcaster, but it packs a punch! The combined efforts of the lovely bar staff, building itself and excellent ales make it a rather wonderful place to be!
Ok so after a hard day at office i had visited this place. I came to know about this place from one of colleague and glad he told me about this place.
The entry to this is place is real narrow and you might miss it completely if dont pay much attention.
The place is the oldest pub in london (Rebuilt in 1666 after the great fire of london). this place has essentially 2 floors and one mezzanine floor. The decor is absolutely incredible, very old pictures, the sitting is very medieval.
Coming to food we ordered fries and one chicken dish and of course beer. you might not get mobile network if you sit at the bottom.
The ambiance is very medieval, it's more like a dungeon.
just go there and experience the place.
Interesting layout, with many small rooms. There are bars on various levels.
The fish pie and chips were good and they have a wide range of beers.
The Cheshire Cheese is ancient. It's been around for over four hundred years, and you can tell (in a good way) with floor to ceiling wood panelling and austere portraits lining the walls, and a wonderful coal fireplace. A great atmosphere but the food is hit and miss, sometimes fine and sometimes a little off. It has an amazing literary history, with a whole series of famous writers having bought their beer there, so you'll be in good company as you sip on your pint.
Fantastic historic pub with so many areas to sit and enjoy a beer. Haven’t had a meal here (£17 for a burger is a bit steep for me) but as a proper old pub experience, this is highly recommended.
Stopped in for a drink and to see what this place was all about. It is very cool, and the history of this place is fascinating. We met a man that popped in for a pint ( I named him Jerry) who told us about Cheshire Cheese history and how the sitting area was once an alleyway. And how it started out as a small room and has just slowly took over bits of the alleyways and such. Restrooms are down a couple of levels, where there is dining and another bar. Wish we had a bit more time to explore. The cider was delicious as well.
Great spot for a pint. Cool building with multiple levels and lots of seating. Beers are good, didn’t get to try any food/snacks. Atmosphere is awesome!
I had been wanting to go to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese for a while to participate in the history of the place. It was so cool to think through how many people had sat in the pub, enjoyed a pint, fish and chips, and great conversation with good friends. The experience did not disappoint and the food and drinks were both tasty.
Excellent, very old pub. Lovely, dimly lit space, lots of different rooms. Not crowded on a rainy Sunday evening. All Samuel Smith beer.
Fish and chips are one of my favorites in London. Samuel Smith Lager is quite tasty too.
Great historic pub. Lots of history and photos. Pub is a Samuel Smith, if you like that beer.
Spooky, slightly smelly, but undeniably medieval, this pub was absolutely incredible if you want authentically old London 1700’s style pub. I do know it’s on London oldest pub tours, and I was absolutely blown away at the multi level sexy spooky atmosphere. Bring pals and a date you want to impress with dim lighting in the city of London.
Lovely spot to catch up with a bit of history or grab some food. The place is quite ancient and one shouldn’t be surprised to spot cobwebs lurking around. But the atmosphere is lively with locals and tourist alike. The food had been good in the past but I am not too sure if I can say the same anymore. Friendly service would get through the other crosses.
Fairly busy with visitors to London. The pub is very old and as such has 3 levels. For some reason the ground level bar and the one on the lowest floor were open when the middle was closed. It would have been more logical to have the middle open to save so many steps. Great atmosphere and good beer.
The one thing this pub has in spades is history. The atmosphere is seductively gloomy while surprisingly inviting. Loved it.
Very quaint pub. Lots of different rooms that are quite small. The lower you go, the smellier it gets. If you are tall, watch your head!
One of the oldest pubs in London built in 1667 with dark wood and fireplaces. Very authentic atmosphere! IMO the must-visit place.
Visited on a Wednesday evening and sat downstairs - loved the underground vibes and twisty turns and hallways. Ordered a couple beers and hung out for a while. Before the kitchen closed, we ordered some fries (they said they were out of fish & chips). However, the kitchen forgot we ordered and closed down. So we waited 45+ minutes for fries - and they were also apparently out of ketchup.
Servers weren't always available and hid behind a door - didn't answer or come out even when we knocked for them.
Would visit again and recommend based on atmosphere, but the service could've been better.
Really cool old pub that has been open for a couple hundred years. It still had that old feel to it, the basement is especially cool, with its low ceilings and old timey vibes. Great little tourist destination. An average selection of beers but not a great selection of cider or wines.
We loved this spot! Recommended to me by a coworker for its true English pub fill! And it did just that. You can feel centuries of history in there as you go to their creepy but awesome dungeon or overlook the city from the big windows on the top floor. There's a bar in each location so you don't have to move much. Food stops at 4pm which was a bummer but the liquid bread definitely filled us.
