Matt The Fact - "The Jerusalem Tavern is both fabulously historic and a complete fabrication. Although the premises date from the early 18th century, the current shopfront wasn’t added until 1810 and the place didn't open as a pub until the 1990s."
But who cares how old it is? It's still a London institution, with St.Peter's Brewery beers from Suffolk the main attraction, and ludicrously cheap whiskies on the back bar. After some IPA and Red Ale, we switched over to Ardbeg 10 and Auchentoshan 12 (both around £3.50 per dram). You can also buy mini-kegs and gift packs of St.Peter's beer to take home - I bet they make a killing on Christmas Eve when all their punters realise they forget to get any presents...
And that's pretty much all you need to know. They've got hot food, cosy corners, friendly bar staff, affordable booze, and a great atmosphere. A true London gem.
N.B. The Jerusalem Tavern is open 11am-11pm on weekdays - it is closed at the weekends.
I am confident to say Jerusalem Tavern is my favourite pub in London. It is the cosiest, coolest, quirkiest and most authentic pub I have ever been to. The staff are also nice and very helpful. The place has so much history, you can just see it in every chair, every table and in every corner of the pub.
There is a small seating area at the top of the stairs that would seat up to three people, that is my favourite spot. Although I love the place for what it is, I find it frustrating how small it is. You have to be lucky to find a seat, that's why if I fancy going there, I try my best to get there before the nearby offices close, so I can at least find a seat.
Had been meaning to go to this place when it was called Jerusalem Tavern. Finally went and it has a new name. Fabulous ambience, old decor has been retained. We had the burger and fries which was surprisingly good - excellent in fact!
You can almost taste the history of the place (and I don't mean that the beer was off)..
They have St Peters Beer on Tap which was great to see..
They also have a good range of other beers, Largers etc etc.
We didn't try the food, but other people were saying that it was great.
Super cool ancient pub, nice and hidden with a small mezzanine. For fans of buildings in a distressed state. Good chips too
I don't know what they put in the burgers but whatever it is, mine was genuinely the best burger I've had in years.
Nice, cosy atmosphere with the fireplace and unique decor. Beers rather expensive, but that's Central London for you.
Amazing place, steeped in history, like stepping back in time. Delicious fresh tasting beer, and the steak frites was excellent, as was the fish and chips. A really lovely atmosphere, stemming from the warm welcome the team behind the bar give everyone. I absolutely loved it and will be back soon. Thanks guys, I really appreciate your hard work to make sure everyone has a great time. :)
What a delight! Found this place unexpectedly late Sunday evening and they made us a free sandwich after the kitchen was closed, gave us information about the area, made us feel welcome, laughed so hard, enjoyed great drinks, beautiful old pub, we talked fondly about the Queen. This building is absolutely gorgeous and dripping with history. The owner and manager were so welcoming. Five stars all the way, we will be back on purpose!
🚇 Farringdon
🍺 £6.30 The Lager
❤️ One of most intimate pubs in London.
.
The Holy Tavern (formerly The Jerusalem Tavern) is just a short walk from Farringdon Station and is located In quiet side street at the southern end of Clerkenwell.
.
This Georgian building dates back to 1720 and has seen many uses over the years. The beautiful ground floor frontage dates back to 1810 but this pub actually started life as a pub in the mid 90’s.
.
This has to be one of the most intimate pubs in London with its snug and cosy seating arrangements. As mentioned earlier this pub was created in the mid 90’s and the thought and attention to detail to the design means you would think that your surroundings were hundreds of years old not twenty five. The floor is stripped wood and the walls are panelled and painted green, at the front of the pub there are tiles on the wall depicting the seasons of the year. The seating is a mixture of rustic pews, tables and chairs with some additional seating outside dotted around large old barrels. The bar area is compact and petite and has beer taps on and behind it.
.
The beer choice here was all new to me, the very helpful member of staff helped me navigate through the options and I ended up have a lager called - yes, you’ve guessed it “The Lager”. Its brewed by Anspach & Hobday who are based in Croydon, it was a really nice pint and little over six quid. This pub was previously run by Suffolk based St Peter’s Brewery who ended their twenty five year lease back in February, the brewery still supplies the pub and the beers are well celebrated. There is no food available at present.
.
I visited on a Friday afternoon, there was a tube strike on that day and this must have impacted the pub because it was fairly quiet. This is a popular haunt of locals, office workers and tourists alike, so choose a good time to visit. To enhance your experience here why not pop along for candlelit Tuesdays or the occasional visit from Morris Dancers. This pub isn’t open on weekends.

The @theholytavern has long been on the radar and it didn’t disappoint. The building is beautiful and very inviting, the layout of this pub makes for a engaging pub experience and the beer is great and diverse. A quality Clerkenwell boozer this, which definitely gets my blessing.

There is nothing bad to say about this pub. An old place full of history with a very friendly staff and a live fireplace.
Definitely, not the last time I stepped inside this pub.
Until very recently this was the Jerusalem Tavern. Historic building and lovely interior.
Had a great chat with the owner, Hendrik - lovely guy, doing an amazing job with this beautiful, small pub. Some different beers for the area, including St Peter’s Brewery (who leased the pub previously) and Anspach & Hobday.
Ales are very well kept. The wheat beer was excellent and refreshing on a humid day.
What a charming little pub. I've been wanting to visit for a number of years now after being told by a man at Manchester Beer Festival that they sold St Peter's plum porter and other ales on tap. I was not disappointed. Very friendly and chatty staff, great ale and atmosphere. I would recommend to anybody visiting London who enjoys their ale. Also, it's only a short walk from Farringdon station too which is another plus. I hope it isn't too long before I visit again.
