We started off with drinks and I ordered a Don Pablo which was very good.
We then started with a Hot & Sour soup which tasted better than most other places.
For starters, I was really impressed with the The spice route ‘Chai’ (Tofu). That was the best amongst the starters.
The wasabi prawns and wasabi tofu were too soggy, sweet and hardly had the zing of wasabi.
The Soft shelled crab was just not worth ordering for the price, for the taste or for the texture. It was just bad.
The layered tofu which is the vegetarian version of mock meat was bad as well. The texture, the taste, the flavour just not up to the mark.
For the mains we ordered Roasted Chilean sea bass which was great, and yet again my favourite was the vegetarian main of Mapo Spicy Aubergines and Homemade Tofu. It came sizzling in a bowl and it stayed hot until the very last bite. We ordered the Ginger flavoured fried rice to go with the mains and it was a great choice. Finally for Desserts we ordered The chocolate delicacy - Chocolate Grows On Trees. The presentation, the taste and the quality was just mind blowing. A must must try for all those who have a sweet tooth and love chocolate.
For a Michelin Star Restaurant I think the quality of the seafood starters can be so much better. Having worked in a Restaurant by a Michelin star chef (ABC V -Jean Georges) I know the quality that needs to be put into every dish that is on the menu.
But nonetheless a good experience. 👍

❤️: Everything was absolutely amazing. But the best highlight dishes of the meal would have to go to the Nanyang Chili Lobster and Peking Duck. Don’t miss the cute dessert plate, Oprah’s Contradiction, combining small bites of the best tasting elements together.

Just down the road from Grosvenor House in the heart of Mayfair is the lovely little restaurant serving wonderful Chinese food. You could bump into a celebrity or two but the food is great. The corn fed chicken and the sea bass with ginger are just done right. The exquisite 6 shades of chocolate is the ultimate dessert to finish off a fine meal
They say they have the best hot and sour soup in the world and indeed they do. You gotta go try it for yourself. The place is very well located in Mayfair London and the ambience is cozy and subtle. Been there twice loved it both times.
For a delicious and out of this world experience for your tastebuds, don’t miss out on this fine dining opportunity! The hot and sour soup is the best you will ever taste, the wasabi prawns are my personal favourite and I have tried quite a few in different places but nobody does it like Kai! And to top it off the Peking duck with the sliced cucumbers and onions in the pancake with plum sauce followed by the second portion which consists of the rest of the duck sautéed in oyster sauce with a pairing of rice of your choice! Definitely a must go! Do not miss out!!
Great restaurant! We loved eating all the food and the manager specially helped resolve a lot of issues with the mains. All in all a great space!
A memorable luxurious and fine dining experience!
The combination of flavors used in the savory and sweet dishes are very unique and well researched that you will never taste anywhere else.
Staff is very friendly and highly knowledgeable about the ingredients and the history behind every dish.
No.1 Chinese restaurant to be recommended in London !
Looking for somewhere for that special occasion? Or just feel like splurging? Well then, welcome to Kai! On South Audley Street, in the heart of Mayfair, this place fits snugly into the ‘fancy’ department. Its awards pretty much speak for themselves: “1 Michelin Star – 2009 to 2017”; “Highest Ranked Chinese Restaurant in the Sunday Time’s Britain’s Top 100 Restaurants 2012 & 2015” etc. etc. So was it worthy? I’d say so… There were two specific things that I loved about the menu:
Excellent food, must try their spiced chai dishes and wasabi infused dishes (veg and non veg). Service was good and the place had a beautiful interior. But their desserts were simple amazing, the chocolate tree, the creme brûlée with Milo powder and the Oprah dessert are must try’s. Definitely recommend this place, great standard.
Hands down, this is one of the best restaurants ive been in London.
Their food is so delicious, flavorful and you will definitly order a second plate. They also have this hot sauce they make homemade, it is so good with the food.
Ive been there more than once throughout the past 2 years. And honestly, i love it.
The waiters are friendly and kind, they will serve you with smile.
Jmd it’s an excellent Chinese restaurant in London I should say all Chinese food lovers in London it’s a must try Resturant and the manager Mr Wynn is so actively involved that he is keeping an eye on each and every server
This has a 5 star service and 5 star skilled staff
For food its best taste in food
A must visit restaurant....
THE best Chinese food I have EVER had.
When one visits London, the usual popular restaurants come into mind- Hakkasan, Nobu, Maroush, etc. But it's Kai Mayfair, which is slightly less known than the above mentioned places, does the trick of leaving a hardcore foodie more than satisfied.
The place itself is very low key (a casual passerby can easily miss the restaurant), but it's this mystery that adds to the legend of Kai Mayfair. When you step into the restaurant (after a week in advance reservation that is recommended), it immediately feels as if you have stepped into one of the classiest dim lit lounges you will ever step into. Luckily for my friend & I, we got the table just opposite the aquarium.
When it comes to the food, I kid you not, my mouth waters every time I get reminded of my dining experience at Kai. Usually, I'm not a soup guy, but I did try out the Hot and Sour Soup (the menu itself says- "Please let us know if you have tasted a better version elsewhere".). The soup consisted of chicken and seafood, and interestingly, the waiter got a small bowl of chilly oil and used an ink blotter to add a few drops to the soup (according to him, it adds to the flavour). As soon as I had the first sip, I could tell that this soup was definitely unlike anything I had every tasted. Whatever soup I have had in other great restaurants, it was usually thin and oily. This one was so rich, it felt like there was no oil at all. Absolutely superb.
The soup was followed by the Wasabi Prawns with mild wasabi mayonnaise, mango & basil seeds. I have had a lot of variants of this dish in many of the top restaurants in India, and the common complain was that too much wasabi was used and this made the dish very pungent. Whereas, at Kai, the wasabi was mixed with the mango and basil seeds so well, that it did not even feel like you were eating wasabi. It felt like a delightful mixture of wasabi with something sweeter, and this combination made the prawns taste absolutely heavenly. The prawns were also very large, and sumptuous.
This was finally followed by the classic Lobster and Lobster. This consisted of succulent and fat lobster pieces with poached noodles that had lobster oil generously sprinkled over it. Since I love my sauces, I had to add some of the chilly sauce to the noodles to make it tangier, and it worked! This dish was the perfect conclusion to the greatest Chinese meal I have ever had.
As far as the budget goes, it is a pretty expensive restaurant. I had to shell out approximately £100. But, hey, it was worth every penny.
A MUST TRY FOR ALL YOU FOODIES OUT THERE.
Its very fine dining and luxuries place ..
Starter
Prawn wasabi 4.5/5 , soft crab shell 4/5 hot and sour soup 4/5 and last shrimp toast 4.5/5
Main dish ...
Chicken cashew 3.5/5 , black pepper beef wagyu 4.6/5
Lobster 4/5 but was removed shell as fine dining was weird to use hand and tools and last was duck 4.8/5
Desert and drinks
Passion fruit mojito 5/5 just perfect , layer of chocolate with ice cream was yummiest taste of sneakers snd chocolate fondue but was a bit bitter
Known for the highest ranked Chinese restaurant in Britain. This restaurant is just perfect , with the Jazz music to the vibes and ambience to the service and food. I would highly recommend this restaurant for Chinese food lovers. The service is absolutely great. Food is served within the right time. Best experience ever!
For appetisers:
Crispy seaweed: crispy, crunchy and everything tasty. The only negative think about this dish is that it's so sweet and oily! I would rate this dish 3/5
Wasabi prawns: probably the best wasabi prawns I had ever tried. It was with avocado sauce. Deeply fried, crunchy and there are so many flavours in this dish. It's a must try dish. I would rate the prawns 5/5
Sesame prawn toast: classic Asian starter. I would rate this dish 4.5/5
Hot and sour soup: with prawns , chicken and noodles. A bit heavy and sour. I didn't complete the soup because it had a little of prawns and the rest was the hot and sour heavy water soup. I would rate this dish 3.5/5
Passion fruit mojito drink: I would rate this 5/5. PERFECTION IN A DRINK!
Smoked chicken: cut into little fingers, fried till golden, crispy from the outside and soft in the inside. Amazingly tasty. Please try this with chilli garlic sauce, they fit perfectly together. It's so not oily, and they are distinctly different from ordinary chicken nuggets. I would rate this dish 3.5/5.
Mains
Chicken cashew nuts: sweet and sour sauce. The chicken was cooked perfectly. The tomatoes were bitter. It comes with cashew nuts , fried till golden. The chicken was so soft. I would rate this dish 4/5
Black pepper beef (wagu beef): sweet, chilli, salty. All the flavours in one dish. The beef is mouthwatering yet pricy as hell. It costs about £95. The beef comes with some sort of biscuit that I didn't like. I would rate this dish 4.25/5
Half duck roll: crispy, delicious. The duck meat neither salty, nor sweet nor spicy. The most renowned duck meat is in Kai. I would rate this dish 4 /5
Kagoshima wagu beef: was so oily and overrated. I personally didn't like it. Four pieces and they cost £95. This is insane. I would rate this dish 2.5/5. Don't try this dish!
I have eaten Chinese food for all my life. I have tried 100s if not 1000s of Chinese restaurants. I have eaten street and fine dining Chinese food. But... Never a restaurant quite like Kai. It was an amazing experience to dine there. The food was amazing. I had the Wasabi Prawns, Soft Shell Crab Salad, Soft Poached Eggs and Caviar, Black Pepper Beef, Rack of Lamb, Sea Bass, Broccolini, Lobster & Lobster, Tiger Prawns for the main. 6 Shades of Choc and nuts and Pineapple sandwich for dessert. Every dish is a work of art. It's delicious and it taste beyond amazing. The flavours flow like music on your tastebuds. It truly deserve the best Chinese restaurant award imo. It is definitely the best Chinese restaurant I have ever tried in my life. Highly recommended.
I went to Kai with my family, the restaurant is located on Mayfair just off audley street close to audley pub. At first I was slightly disappointed because even though we had a reservation they made us wait for a good 15-20 min, the restaurant was very beautiful from inside and was decorated and done up very tastefully.
We were 3 people and we ordered a lot of food for 3 people, our total order consisted of half a portion of the aromatic duck, a portion of the wasabi prawns, spare ribs, special fried rice, cashew nut chicken, a noodle dish that I can't recall properly, cheesecake and chocolate fondant.
The prawns were very good they were full of flavor and very soft, the spare ribs were also very very good thought the ribs had very little meat on them the flavor of the glaze compensated for it. The duck was the best out of all the dishes that we had ordered, it was cooked to perfection and tasted absolutely phenomenal. The rice that we had ordered went very well with chicken and we enjoyed the rice/chicken duo very much, the noodles were a big disappointment they lacked flavor and very quite bland to be honest. I thought that the desserts were not as good as rest of the food but still were pretty darn good, I would choose the cheesecake over the fondant.
All in all I think that Kai provides the best Chinese food in London (according to me), beating all competition like Hakkasan, Yautacha, princess garden etc. If you have not been to Kai you really ought to.
The ambience here is really nice and the waiters definitely take care of you. The food is very nice with the 'wasabi chai' being a stand out dish, however I believe that it is way overpriced for what it is. On a special occasion I would come back or maybe just to try the other desserts because the six shades of chocolate one was very good!
Fab! A complete twist to Chinese cuisine. Don't miss the wasabi prawns and the Chilean sea bass.. The desserts are to die for and the best part is the desserts on the first page of menu! Very thoughtful
Came with a party of six so the meal was served family style. Food was very good. Staff was very accommodating and professional.
Duck Duck and more Duck please ! :) They were amazing I could eat them all day ready with sauce and everything in that piece of crepe or bread although it wasn't the usual pecking duck it was aroma something and I loved it!!!!
Sophisticated Chinese.. We enjoyed an outstanding set lunch at Kai, one of the better ones at Michelin level. Also excellent value at £27, with a pre-starter, sorbet & petit four offered, with some dishes from the a la carte menu. Service is attentive, professional and informed. A starter of Shanghai noodle sheets & jelly fish, sesame & ginger dressing was light, clean with wonderful balance of flavors, and prettily constructed.
Their classic platter of char siu & crispy pork was refined & precise, where one does not overpower the other - the char siu lightly caramelized and the pork belly carefully seasoned. Poached pear & chestnut parfait expressed seasonality, which is good to see at a Chinese restaurant, but not particularly Chinese. Overall, this is impressive & exciting stuff from an assured kitchen.
Kai is a classy Chinese establishment on South Audley Street in Mayfair and it has been rated as one of the best Chinese restaurants in London for some time. As we walked into the restaurant, we were greeted by the scent of fresh apples.
Kai is a Michelin star Chinese restaurant situated in Mayfair in London. Although the dishes were quite pricey the food was very good and both the boy and I enjoyed our dinner here. We started with soft shelled crab (16/20) which was lovely cooked and went really well with the dressing. My boyfriend also had the hot and sour soup (13/20). Which was extremely praised by the restaurant in the menu. Unfortunately neither my boyfriend and I felt that the soup raised to the high standard the restaurant made us expect. The tiger prawns with crispy curry leaves (18/20) was definitely my favourite dish of the evening. The mix of flavours was beautiful and the prawns were very well cooked. For the meat dish we had the soy & honey marinated lamb (14/20) which was good but didn`t feel very Chinese.
The lobster is beautifully cooked and the waitress goes that extra step further, skillfully organising the noodles into stringy testicular clumps, tableside before serving.
So for our 1st anniversary together we treated ourselves to our first Michelin star dining experience at Kai of Mayfair. Back at this year's Taste of London , Kai was our top find of the food festival. Especially those wasabi prawns. Actually that's why we really came here - just to eat them again.
Here are some teasers from KAI: Braised Abalone, Fresh Truffles, Broccolini, Jus Reduction – A modern take on the traditional abalone dish, which works marvellously! There is a real bite, not-too-chewy texture of the abalone intensified by the jus, while
After the dish my tongue tingled almost like it has awakened my taste buds and leaves u wanting more.
Kai is firmly a Mayfair rather than a Chinatown kind of Chinese restaurant. The dining room is split between a ground floor and a basement, and is smartly decorated: a fish tank is on one wall, and there are plenty of mirrors to enhance the sense of space
The whole Michelin Star thing is all rather peculiar to me. A guide that was created by the eponymous tyre manufacture for the travelling man has somehow become the quintessential guide for ostensibly great food. However, despite their claims to the contr
Come to think of it, we almost wanted to cancel our dinner reservation at Kai when we heard what an Cantonese acquaintance's take of the Mayfair restaurant during a meal at Korean Kitchen last Friday. "I don't know what cuisine Kai serves," he lamented, "
Kai Mayfair’s menu tells a compelling story about Chinese cuisine, from simple Chicken in Oyster Sauce, to traditional Shark Fin Soup and the seriously extravagant Buddha Jumps Over the Wall (I’ve had this in Hong Kong, and honest opinion? Meh..) which re
Fine Chinese dining found here. The ambience the food and the service all five star . The desserts and the chinese tea after food are all worth a try. The prices are good for a restaurant in Mayfair london.
Favorite dishes were the hot and sour soup and the garlic asparagus. Great food, long wait but good service. Though expect fat Mayfair prices, you can get the same quality of food from much cheaper Chinese restaurants.
What should i say about this place? My five star rating should say it all. Amazing ambience & food. Wasabi prawns are to die for. From the start to the end was a perfect dining experience. If in london u cannot miss Kai Mayfair. The best Chinese restaurant in the world from my end.
Great place, great people and amazing food. Accommodated for my wife who is vegetarian. They recommend dishes for her and made sure she had an amazing birthday dinner. Definitely will be making another visit to this place.
Absolutely worth a visit, every dish tastes original, the wasabi prawns are sublime and the aubergine and prawns were packed full of flavour and substance. The artwork that surrounds you accentuates the flavours of the dishes. Magnificent. All the staple dishes are done to the highest standard, but when you go to Kai, standard is not want you want. Explore the menu, try new dishes, you will not regret it. Incredible place, well worth the money and well done for the michelin star!
The best wasabi prawns I have ever eaten in my life !! My family and I ordered smoked chicken and beef kago nuts!
My all time favorite Chinese restaurant. Service: perfect
Food: amazing
Kai has the reputation of being one of the best high-end Chinese restaurants in London, and I'd been meaning to visit for some time. It lived up to its reputation, offering some of the highest quality Chinese food I've had anywhere with both strong and delicate flavors, and very comfortable/ plush surroundings, while maintaining a relaxed ambiance. Service was friendly, with the whole experience there being one of luxury without any stuffiness.
It's a Michelin star Chinese restaurant. Definitely not your average Chinese place. The food is amazing and adventurous, but then again you would not expect anything less from it. It's not a place, where you can go too on a every weekend dinner. Save the place for special occasions.
The scallops and the wasabi prawns are my favourite.
The customer service is also very accommodating and helpful!
Must try once if you are in London if nothing just for the experience.
Good food and mood - variety on the menu and prominence in flavours! Didn’t quite like then lobster noodles despite looking very forward to it. It was chewy and not well seasoned.
The beef was impeccable and would definitely order it again!
Atmosphere was very calm, a couple tables with few people around but the rest were empty..
Came here on Sunday for the afternoon tea to celebrate a friends birthday.
The decor is beautiful and the staff are very friendly.
Crazy rich asian themed with menus displayed on the tables inside the crazy rich asian books. Loved the bird cages and birds on the tables where you could tell your wishes to and clip onto the surrounding bird cages in the restaurant. Also loved the wind up chirping birds on the table.
The waiter explained the menu selection, and we received a complimentary cocktail to start. This was a tea cocktail and was really tasty, non alcohol versions can also be served.
We picked our teas and selected our afternoon tea option and were quickly served a beautiful spread, and the waiter explained what each dish was.
I must admit the savoury portions are very small and they don't let you know that you could get a free refill of any of the afternoon tea foods but because it's more of a higher end afternoon tea we asked the waiter and he brought us another serving.
We thoroughly enjoyed every part of the afternoon tea and loved all the details put into it.
The toilets here are also amazingly designed.
I will definitely be back again
We came here for the afternoon tea. Just to note the restaurant on Google comes up as closed but it is open for tea. The ambience and service was so good, amazing even. Decor was wow and the little touches of the experiences were great. The savoury food was great, so was the sweet- everything was amazing! And it was just enough food. Tea was also good. Afternoon tea is £52 per person and I would definitely recommend going, especially on a special occasion!
Kai was my first experience at a high end Michelin star restaurant amd it didn't disapoint. Genuinely the best food I have ever eaten. The pudding in particular was the single best thing I have eaten, ever.
The staff were lovely and very friendly. One gent even offered to teach me how to use chop sticks. Very genuine people that help make you feel at home.
Incredible place. I would highly recommend.
What an experience. Beautiful tent with pitches on 2 levels. The food was excellent. Good advice on the quantity of dishes. Top spot.
The food is great especially the chili lobster. It was one of the best dishes I’ve ever tried. The duck was also very nice but I wouldn’t say it’s that special. Also shrimp wasabi for starters, yummm! It’s honestly quite pricey but it was expected.
The food is so good
Wasabi shrimp is a must, salt& pepper calamari is so good also crispy duck highly recommended
Staff are welcoming
Service is 10/10
We were very excited to try out Kai in Mayfair. This 1 Michelin star spot has had some really good reviews. The atmosphere and interior is really nicely designed and quite unique. The food was decent and the wine selection was good. Highlight of the evening was the chocolate dessert. One of the best things to try.
Great restaurant with amazing food!
The service is great and couldn’t find one thing to improve. I will come again for sure!

It bridges the past with the present, setting new standards for Chinese cuisine in London. A visit to Kai Mayfair is undoubtedly a gastronomic journey that will not easily fade from memory.
Went as a group of 9, very calm and relaxing surroundings allowing you to be at ease throughout your whole time there. From the beginning staff members are super friendly and very attentative. It's very rare to meet people that genuinely remember each specific order per person and bring the food to those who have ordered a specific dish. Fantastic in that regards to avoid confusion.
Chicken, beef and lamb are the halal options here though the chef did mention one of the beef dishes isn't so I would double check before ordering.
The portion sizes for meals was slightly on the smaller side but the food quality was very good.
We ordered a bit of everything and everything we tasted did not fall below expectations. Burst of flavours from a variety of dishes. The menu has a variety of options so choose to your hearts content.
Pricing is reasonable, you will be spending more than you usually would but that is met by quality standards in staff and taste in food.
Would I go here again, yes. Spent roughly 3 hours there and enjoyed the whole occasion.
Celebrated my husband's birthday there. Had an amazing three course meals - Chinese New Year menu. The dessert, " Chocolate does grow on trees" is to die for and must try dessert. Never had a sparkling alcoholic tea before and it was levitating! Definitely recommend it if you want a fine dining experience with authentic flavour food.
Chinese Whispers afternoon tea @ Kai was awesome.
Really fun and cute. Service and welcome was awesome. Lovely downstairs room which is well suited to a relaxing afternoon.
All the food was very tasty and pretty as a picture.
Will definitely have to try dinner next time.
An absolute delight! The food is incredibly delicious, with a unique and special taste that sets it apart. The service is impressively fast, and the waitstaff is kind and attentive. While the atmosphere could be improved, given the restaurant's small size, it's still a great choice for quiet family dinners and peaceful evenings. A culinary experience that's not to be missed.
I have a dream... to walk into Kai on a hot summer day and to take a refreshing, zesty bite of their Cake & Cream dessert, reminding me of the joys of being alive. That is how we felt on our visit to Kai Mayfair.
We walked in and were greeted by professionals who took our coats and seated us within a very contemporary Chinese ambience. The dress code was smart casual. The music was soft and there were various decorative elements that elevated the experience.
We were promptly given the menus and this is what we ordered:
1. Wasabi Prawns
2. Aromatic Crispy Bean
3. 18 Hour Pork Belly
4. Lip Tinglin Mushrooms
5. Long Life Noodles (veg)
6. Nanyang Chicken
7. Broccolini
8. Chocolate Grows on Trees
9. Pandan Creme Brulee
10. Cake & Cream
Wasabi Prawns: these were the first to arrive and this is the best wasabi I've ever had. Often it can be either too strong or too weak but Kai's chef has mastered this dish. The balance of flavours was impeccable and the prawns were extremely fresh. 10/10 for this one.
Aromatic Crispy Bean: this was a veggie take on their popular crispy duck and it was flawlessly executed. I can't fathom how they managed to get the tofu/beancurd so thin and crispy but the texture was spot on. The pancakes were paper thin and the sauce was rich, sweet, and delicate. Another 10/10.
Pork Belly: again another flawless dish with cucumber foam atop a shocking soft piece of meat that literally melted in my mouth. The accompanying sauce was exactly what you'd expect to help balance this dish.
Lip Tinglin Mushrooms: I liked this dish since it came with a spicy broth that went excellently with the steamed rice. There were 3 kinds of mushrooms with it, all with different textures- made for a strong main
Long Life Noodles: the broth was fabulous with depth of flavour. It had an amazing umami that elevated the perfectly cooked noodles. There was a scattering of mushrooms that added a firm texture to the soft noodles. 10/10.
Chocolate Grows on Trees: this dish made me feel like I was a child again, running around in the forest tripping over rocks and falling face first into a pile of dirt. A replica of that memory but with a burst of falvour and texture. The favourite part of this was the exquisite liquid chocolate that oozed out of the brownie.
Creme Brulee: I was apprehensive about trying this, afraid of the eggy taste. I was pleasantly surprised when my suspicions were washed away by the perfect creme brulee. The Pandan flavour perfectly balanced the richness and this was a technical masterpiece.
Cake & Cream: the dream we have was aptly summarized by this dish. It was a sensory masterpiece: our eyes, noses, and tongues were impressed by the freshness of the orange and the delicate ice cream atop a fluffy cake. 11/10.
All in all, the service was excellent, the food was delicate, and the experience was flawless. 5/5.
Nice resturant and friendly staff were there.
The place need in advance booking to visit it.
The food was good (but not wow) Chinese food where I liked the appetizers more than the main course.
We have order different dishes but I like the on toast appetizers, shrimp, beef steak and chicken spicy.
Worth to try and honestly the staff was super kind.
(Note: this place is one of Adele favourite resturant in London :) )
We loved the afternoon tea at Kai Mayfair, and we particularly love to come over spring/ summer time. Good selection of food & drinks, pretty pretty tableware and food. Tastewise I’d give a 7/10 (Asian savoury selection could be more outstanding). Service felt a bit rushed at afternoon tea. Would love to try out their dinner menu soon!
