Reviews The Boot And Flogger

The Boot & Flogger was the first Davy Wine Bar, having opened initially on Borough High Street in 1965 before moving to its current location on Redcross Way in 1973. With its old dark wood panelling and pictures of historical scenes on the walls, I felt like I was stepping back in time from the moment I walked in. In a good way.
On our visit - on a Monday evening - I’d reserved a table for three. It turned out to be a table in a semi-private snug in the middle of the pub, which felt pretty special for our celebration. Service was friendly, welcoming and efficient and there was an appealing food menu with a good range of drinks...

Drink but don't eat. Traditional interior with big barrels behind the bar, old padded chairs. Would go astray on a tour of The Jerusalem, Old Cheshire Cheese or Gordons Wine Bar.

Best bit is it closes at 8pm, it only sells wine, doesn't play music and lines up tables with a chair either side in expectation of just pairs of people coming in to chat. This isn't a romantic gesture, more people coming to discuss things. We immediately sat down and start plotting.

Wine was good, but not cheap, £20 for a rather nice Pinot Noir, they also sell a range of sherries.

Menu is sort of traditional English. Game pie was served direct from the fridge and pretty tasteless, served with a miserable salad didn't help it. A side of Quails eggs was the same, out of a jar and onto a plate. Scallops and bacon were a bit better but really nothing you'd go back for.

This place offers an old fashioned kind of decorations and the restaurant is paneled with wood all over the place. The staff is pretty friendly as well and seem to be welcoming. They offer an extensive range of wines to choose from, though the prices might be a little high.
Most of the dishes that we ordered tasted amazing and the food perfectly complemented the wine.

This is one place that you simply cannot miss visiting. It transports you to the beautiful old world London and take my word for it you are going to love it. Be it the menu or the 'cigar' collection or be it just the ambience everything is so English about this place. You can go with your mother or you can take your girlfriend. You are going to love your experience here. Just try the different wines that this place has to offer and sit in awe of the place. A must visit!

I chanced to visit this place because my partner was keen on trying English food and she is a great fan of the Victorian era. There was no better place than this which was a combination of both. The wooden decor just adds to the warmth of the place and makes you feel like you have been transported to some other place. The servers are so pleasant and efficient. You must try the White Port when you are here!

I am the sort of person who enjoys ambience that transports me back in history. This is one of those places. The wine that is being offered is in a number of varieties and I would definitely recommend you to try the White wine. It is a class apart. The staff is courteous and they are more than happy to help you with any little thing.

Make sure you pay close attention to the number of this place as it is easy to miss it. I have only had the biscuits here and not tried anything else. But the quality of those biscuits and other people suggest that everything here is quite delicious. The prices here are quite reasonable a well. Definitely worth a visit.

This place is one of the best bars in the city. I do not see a reason to visit other pubs after having discovered this place which takes you right back to the old times. The drinks here are delicious and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere here is so relaxing and comfortable that it will make you forget everything else. Highly recommended.

I adore this place so much. I used to work in a nearby area and would frequent this place often after being introduce by a colleague from work to the cheese platter here about five years ago. I happened to go here again after a long time and found the decor to be very comfortable. The wine selection is quite extensive and the cheese platter is very amazing. The clientele here is varied and interesting as well.

This is one place that will make you relaxed and forget all your troubles after a long and tiring day. The decor of the place is very reminiscent of old times, especially the Victorian era. The wine selection is very varied and is priced very reasonably. The food is perhaps better than average, though not very delightful. The drinks are great though; go here for those.

If you are looking for a lovely wine bar then you sure should look for this place , yes it might get pretty difficult because of the fact that this place is hidden but your search won't let you down.
This place is opposite to the fascinating Cross-bones Cemetery. This is surely worth visiting.

Chicken breast were okay tender but could have been seasoned better. Portion was good. The squash soup was only average, not a big fan of the sour taste. Love the chocolate brownie, very dense and rich😍 Service was really slow despite everything was pre-ordered (for group booking). But the staff were very nice and friendly. Love the private dining room they provided tho. Overall, the price doesn’t match with the quality of the food.

Ate here as a corporate evening meal out. Was fixed price per head meal but the options were delicious. I chose all the vegan options and they truly did not disappoint.

Only had wine but the place is an absolute gem and huge. Well worth a visit and they have an outside garden area at the back if you need nicotine. Show it some love & pay a visit. Just next to the renovated Redcross Paupers Cemetery (also worth a visit if you want to discover what a Winchester Goose was). 🥲

Really not what I was expecting. First impressions as I walked in was I've definitely booked the wrong place for a work meal, but the servers were amazing, really attentive and super friendly. The food was epic and the drinks selection was brilliant, they dont have beers in tap, but offer bottles and have a large wine selection, they also have only 3 spirits, gin vodka amd whosky. The decor is great, purposefully old school with a posh, but laid back sort of vibe. Had a lovely meal here, I will be coming back.

Couldn’t recommend enough for a work dinner/team social - the private room downstairs is great if you want your own space. The booking process and communication beforehand was excellent, the staff were very attentive and the whole evening well organised. The food also was delicious and tasted very fresh! Thank you to Francesco and team :)

Great place - really interesting and traditional interior. Excellent location but just slightly off the main road. Was here for a formal dinner so can’t comment on price but food was very good and service was excellent. Would go back again.

We only had wine and coffee after having dinner at another place but what a hidden gym this is. The service and atmosphere of this place is superb. Felt like gentlemen’s club in the best sense of that word. Will be exploring further.

A perfect little gem just moments from the busy Borough Market. Perfect quieter place, great service (Spanish waiter was super kind and sweet) and amazing food - highly recommend the Sunday roast. Can’t wait to be back.

Atmospheric and old worldly! This wine bar has retained a lot of its historical charm and feels like you're stepping into history. We were sat in the "cellar" section but didn't feel like we were completely isolated as staff were super friendly and attentive. A small selection of food but a wide selection of wines starting from just ~£26 a bottle of red. Recommend checking it out for the decor, food was great too!

Went for a sponsored event that included the wines, and the experience was excellent, especially the food! The roast beef was perfectly cooked, and everything was of a high standard. Would definitely return!

Great wine bar not far from London Bridge. It's not rammed with office workers either, so quite a peaceful and spacious place. Great wood paneling decor inside, comfy leather chairs and reasonably priced.

TLDR: Sexy, London-old-skool, upper cut establishment where those in the know meet to talk at length over excellently selected wines and quail eggs 🍷🥀 I don't often give five stars... but this place is incredible. Excellent and attentive service... incredible wine selection... quiet, unknown, beautiful, class, quality, clean, comfortable and romantic... I just love this place. It's everything you want an old school London wine den to be without any pretentiousness. I'm a fan. The seafood was incredible. Everything I've ever eaten from here has been top class and quality. It's a date place. Huge outdoor/smoking area also. It looks like it's closed... its open. It's awesome.

We went here last night and had a wonderful time! It's historic; even though this Davy's has been here just over 50 years there's been a food/tavern/inn type of establishment on the sight for almost a thousand years. The interior is really special; looks like it's not been updated since it began, so very authentic, and is extremely clean and cheerful throughout. There are lots of nooks and crannies and private rooms too. Very atmospheric, I was almost expecting Dickens or Dr Johnson and Boswell to arrive. Our waiter for the evening was perfect! Charming, knowledgeable, helpful and fast - he's worth the visit alone. The wines, as you'd expect at Davy's, were delicious and came in a wide price range, so nothing too scary. While the food was standard fish and chips, bangers and mash etc, it was all delicious and fairly priced. Well done Davy's - we can't wait to go back.

Although we arrived towards the end of the day, I couldn’t have asked for any more from those serving us. Professional, friendly and informative. A bar steeped in history, the experience made only more memorable by the staff. My highest recommendation, what a hidden London gem!

A great Davy's wine bar with a changing seasonal menu and specials and an attentive, but not cringingly so staff. On a hot evening it was cool indoors. Very good selection, of course, of wines. Reasonably, for the area, priced.

Solid Sunday lunch, quite hidden away but the restaurant was rather empty! Despite this the food and service was good! Wines quite pricey.
