We went for bottomless brunch at New Street Grill on a Saturday and were overall very pleased. The service was attentive and very polite, and they looked to accommodate anything we needed which was great. They made sure that our glasses were topped up consistently with water and prosecco and gave any advice we needed on the menu too. In terms of the food, it was very good in terms of the quality, but I thought that the quantity was really lacking, especially for the mains. The starters of chorizo scotch egg and asparagus with mozzarella and olive oil tasted delicious but the latter was really tiny in portion. The same went for the mains - a fishcake with poached egg and a piece of grilled chicken with greens were again very small in quantity which is disappointing when you're hungry for a good brunch. I really hope that next time we visit the quantity is a generous as the quality.
I do wonder how restaurants come up with their names. Some seem to make oblique reference to their chef proprietor. Others make innuendo to the type of food that they serve. Yet others make allusion to their location. Some, a combination of these all. Guess which way New Street Grill goes.
As a contributor to this fine blog that is The Boozy Bunch, I often get asked for recommendations for restaurants that do a well-priced, good quality brunch in London. In recent years this meal time has really taken off – it appeals to the trendy, hipster generation, the ladies who lunch club and those of us who frankly can’t be bothered to drag ourselves out of bed in time for breakfast on a weekend. Of course, a slightly later mealtime is now an even better excuse to combine brunch style menus with daytime drinking, so much so that London restaurants have exploded with a plethora of boozy brunch offerings for us cosmopolitan socialites. Especially at the weekend, it’s almost a pre-requisite for a successful restaurant to offer not just a brunch menu but a boozy brunch menu – those that are savvy enough to offer a temporarily unlimited supply of alcoholic sparkle are guaranteed to fill tables every Saturday & Sunday daytime. So since The Boozy Bunch bloggers kindled their friendships over unlimited boozy brunches, I was not surprised when my flatmate asked for me to pick a suitable restaurant to mimic this rather wonderful tradition for her birthday this year. Boozy Birthday Brunches, now that’s some attractive alliteration!
The last restaurant in the D&D group that I reviewed was The Angler in the South Place Hotel complex; it was excellent and went on to gain a Michelin star. So when Fiona and I were invited to review the New St Grill in the Old Bengal Warehouse just off Bishopsgate in an alley throbbing with the energy of young city suits letting off steam, my interest was piqued.
It was with trepidation that I arrived, horribly early, at Old Bengal Bar. There was little sign that anything was going to happen, I perched nervously on a bar stool, checking my phone for the arrival of my dance partner. He was running late. Then, a space was cleared, the music fired up and people started to dance. The class itself turned out to be quite informal – a chance to let your hair down, let off steam and learn a few steps. And, we were glad of the rather excellent cocktails at the Old Bengal Bar afterwards!
New St Grill had been taken over during the Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes of October by Le Bun, and their Le Brunch menu is really great.
There's a set-menu option available or individual dishes, and you can add unlimited prosecco for £10 too.
I opted for 'Le Duck Frites' - pulled duck in a brioche bun with everything else in between. It was perfect.
All washed down with a couple of cocktails from the Old Bengal Bar menu.
With a nod to its name, there is indeed a selection of dishes from the grill - from cuts of Angus and wagyu beef to lobster - but also a 'crustacea' section offering oysters and a shellfish platter, and partridge and grouse for the gamier tastes. Alongside the a la carte, they also offer a Saturday set menu (three courses and an after dinner cocktail for £24.50) which was far too tempting to pass up.
I started with the venison carpaccio - the expertly thin slices of sweet were perfectly sweet, coupled with the tangy parmesan and rocket, and a nice alternative to the standard beef. From there I was tempted by the braised daube of beef with creamed potatoes and red wine jus (which looked amazing) but went for the slightly more predictable pan fried seabass, celeriac puree and braised leeks. I just like seabass, okay?! Perfectly crispy skin, smooth puree and buttery leeks - I just wish there had been more of it. Very small sides of buttery new potatoes and baby carrots were nice accompaniments but the lobster macaroni was (unsuccessfully) calling my name.
Dessert was a mixed bunch - I went for the iced brownie parfait which was a real disappointment. Sizeable chunks of brownie but the accompanying ice cream was practically tasteless and left me hankering for the Colston Basset stilton and spiced pear chutney that the others had chosen.
We'd drank the place out of the Cotes du Rhone at this point so decided to settle up and head next door for our complimentary cocktail. A more industrial but still dark sliver of space, the Old Bengal Bar promised to get busy later but never really delivered. Nonetheless, the cocktail was pretty good - Mount Gay Black Barrel rum, Maraschino liquor, grapefruit juice with lime and sugar syrup. A bit of a knock out after all.
A great eatery. Lovely big and airy feel to the restaurant. With an open kitchen also. So you can be assured your food is being freshly prepared! I would recommend the Black Angus burger with the Montgomery cheddar as a must! and if you can possibly fit it in, the bone marrow.
Came here for my wife's birthday and had a splendid time. The service was amazing and the food was even better. Would definitely recommend for an occasion as the venue is vintage and beautifully decorated.
Quality and taste meet together in this place. A stunning place for a business lunch or dinner. Excellent service, served like in the movies. Warning in advance, prepare a wallet because the place is not cheap.
Chose the restaurant for its proximity to Liverpool Street and recent reviews. First problem was access which involved around a dozen steep stairs and not much to hold on to, an issue for one of my party. We decided we needed a smaller table and we were moved without difficulty although the bench seat coverings had some tears.
Our choice of starters, tiger prawns and beetroot salad were generally approved although I have had softer scallops, maybe a touch overdone. Bread and olives were requested and strangely, for four people, we were given three hot mini-loaves (which worked out at £2 each). Main courses were again generally good, my only complaint about the beef and ale pie was I couldn't eat it all! However, my wife found her roast potato had apparently only been shown a flame and was quite inedible. Her dish was replaced and she was happy with this although it meant she ended up eating well after the rest of us had finished.
To be fair and without our needing to suggest some recompense, the restaurant removed the cost of her dish and offered us free deserts. The mixed berry sorbet was a particular hit.
This is a big restaurant and probably more popular with people on expense accounts. Not sure I would go again, but apart from the rogue potato, the food was well prepared and dishes were served to the right people, always a winner for me.
Amazing experience! The food was delicious!
Fresh, great flavour, great portions! My husband and I enjoyed the night. The wine recommended was great, the starters were delicious, the burger had great size, the Chateubriand was delicious with bone marrow, truffle chips and creamed spinach were amazing.
We also had the prawns, perfectly grilled juicy!
Dessert was really nice balanced! The apple crumble with blackberry was a great idea!
We will definitely go back for more!
Legitimately the best restaurant around Liverpool Street Station! Doesn’t matter what I get I end up liking it. Probably the best Porterhouse Steak I’ve had, just annoyed I've had to share!
This is not just a meal; it's an experience, made all the better by the remarkable service led by Spyros. If you're looking for a steakhouse that delivers on all fronts—food quality, atmosphere, and exceptional service—then look no further. Five stars all the way."
Had a very nice meal here, unfortunately when we went early on a Saturday evening it was full of shouting, overly noisey hen parties, the staff were very nice and moved us to a quieter table away from the noisey prosecco filled females. Best to go during the week as you get the office staff from surrounding area and not so noisey. Staff very friendly and efficient, food was excellent. I would recommend eating here. And sorry to moan about the hens, but they were noisey.
Beautiful space that’s reputation rests in large part on the creatively envisaged and expertly executed food, wine, and service. A hidden gem in the heart of the City.
We enjoyed a wonderful meal in lush surroundings with accommodating staff. Highly recommend.
We had a reeealy delicious meal with absolutely excellent wine.
The waiter were kind and helpfull and very charming.
Definetaly not our last visit!
Thanks very much for a lovely dinner with colleagues, there were 8 of us. All the food was sublime, perfectly cooked and well presented and our evening made very special by the attentive Spyros.
Exquisite experience.
All food and drinks were properly served.
Food was almost perfect. Stake ordered medium but was a bit overcooked - flavor wise was excellent.
I wish I could give a bonus star for the dessert!
The whole experience beginning to end was amazing. Zain was especially attentive and loved the background history John shared of the building. I would definitely being going again.
(+) Good service. Nice selection of food and drinks. Gorgeous presentation.
(-) The place was too noisy so you’d need to shout to have a conversation here.
Although we were in a hurry to get to our boat trip the meal was absolutely wonderful. Staff extremely friendly but compliments to the chef. I will go back without a doubt. Sorry but only took photos of the splendid desserts
New Street Grill is a fantastic steak restaurant near Liverpool Street in the heart of the City. It prides itself by working with trusted suppliers all over the country. All of these ingredients are then showcased by the Head Chef using different techniques, including cooking on the Josper Grill.
The main restaurant is donned with low lighting and plush leather booths as well as larger tables for group dining. If you prefer a few drinks, the accompanying Bengal Bar and outdoor terrace offers a wide selection of wines and spirits.
There is an extensive wine list available at New Street Grill with guidance from award winning sommelier, Tanguy Martin. The restaurant actually showcases a luxury wine list awarded Best of Award of Excellence by Wine Spectator!
We started our evening with a lovely glass of Moet champagne (£12) to celebrate our Friday night. With the steak, we had a glass of California red wine, Bogle Phantom, which had delicious dark fruit flavours.
There are a number of starters on offer including Loch Var Smoked Salmon, Burrata, Oysters and Veal Tenderloin. Whilst tempting, we skipped starters to ensure we had ample room for mains and desserts! However, we did have some rosemary and potato sourdough to warm up our stomach.
There are various cuts of meat straight off the Josper Grill including fillet, ribeye, sirloin, hanger and veal. We opted for the 28 day aged Aberdeen Angus Chateaubriand (£11 per 100g). Served medium, it was tender in the middle and grilled around the edges. Just perfect.
The Chateaubriand was served with bone marrow and we had triple cooked chips, Bearnaise and peppercorn sauce. Our favourite side however was the curried cauliflower, yogurts and almonds (£4.50). It was great to see such a good and unique selection of side dishes.
We were chuffed that we had made room for the desserts as we loved the sound of all of them! Helpfully, the menu also suggests a paired dessert wine.
We could not resist the Cambridge Burnt Cream (£7.50) which was so silky smooth. The Sticky Toffee Pudding with vanilla ice cream (£8) had a great amount of sauce but was a little too dense for us.
Finishing up a fantastic meal we had petit fours and an espresso. What a meal – safe to say we were stuffed!
New Street Grill restaurant near Liverpool street station offers fine dishes in a relaxed and buzzing environment. If you are a meat eater, you must opt for the steak and speak to the sommelier for some fantastic pairing options. An absolute gem for great steak in London.
Bottomless brunch on a Saturday. What isn't there to love. 2 courses for £20 or 3 courses for £25 with the option of bottomless prosecco for £15. Great quality of ingredients, really good service and the added bonus of a cocktail bar next door to retire to. They're very strict on the table time and will chase you off the table after 2 hours but will sort you out with an alternative in the bar.
Such an amazing place with great food and specially drinks! Manuele is such a great host and was really friendly. Would definitely visit again
