Asakusa is by far the most authentic japanese restaurant I've been to. The restaurant has little space but, so it's always best to make a reservation. Besides, the sushi, always fresh is made at the moment you order it, so the sushi man gets very busy and the waiting time for sushi gets long. In my opinion it is worth it because the food ir actually very good and the environment is cosy and makes you feel like you are, actually, not in the UK, but in Japan.
Fantastic service and authentic food. Decor is a bit rough around the edges but it only adds to the charm. Couldn't recommend more. Sashimi was incredible.
Good Japanese food - place very small and crowded. So make sure to come early or book.
Following dishes were good:
- Gyoza; Tofu with egg; Vegetable tempura; Cod
Slightly of a miss:
- aubergine - sauce was too salty
- Sushi roll - rice a bit soft and mushy
My fav Japanese hole in the wall place - super fresh sushi and tempura. The agedashi tofu and the eggplant were also superb!! Highly recommended !!
Zomato hordes, please cast your hungry gaze elsewhere. Don't come to Asakusa, it's hard enough for us regulars to get a table as it is! Move along now, nothing to see here.
8/10 The Authentic Japanese with reasonable price in London!!. I has been passing the restaurant by bus all the time for 8years. Finally I went Asakusa with my friend last night (thursday evening) for first time. Asakusa has been running by Japanese family for 20+years. The chefs and staffs are Japanese. Please make sure to reserve a table before hand! It's very very popular restaurant!!
We ordered several differet dishes including sashimi, salad, two typle of maki(rolls) sushi etc... Overall ,The food was tasty and Authentic . (Btw,Both of us are Japanese) The price of food is not too bad for what it is. Around £17-£20 per head for food. Very reasonable !!! Sake is quite expensive, Bottle of Beer is £3.50-£4.50.
Their Serivice is very simple and comfortably stright forward but sadly bit slower for Japanese restaurant in London. Inside of the restaurant is quite tatty. It's a typical old Japanese restaurant in London.
Anyway, This restaurant is good for go with friends and family. Very casual. Highly recommend! I'll go there soon.
Family run real Japanese restaurant. Sensational food, always fully booked, excellent value for money. Real urban legend!
Just had an amazing meal here this evening, service was brilliant and not too expensive either. Enjoyed it!
Best Japanese restaurant in London. I've been going here for 3 years and the food is sublime without fail every time. Yes, the decor's "unique" - but you get used to it very quickly and it's part of its charm for me. The main thing is that you won't find better value for money in a Japanese restaurant in London. You'll also find dishes here that I haven't come across anywhere else. But most of all, the produce is absolutely top notch and very fresh - I'm not generally a big fan of sashimi as it usually tastes bland, but it's truly stunning at this place, enough to make me a convert (but only when I dine here). The maguro nuta is perfect and as for the fish cakes - well, you'll just have to try them yourself. And the sushi is fantastic too, with wasabi in the maki rolls, just how it should be.
Even the house wine is great (though the Muscadet's the one to go for), the people there are really friendly - it's faultless as far as I'm concerned. Also good to see a lot of Japanese people eating here; it may be a cliche but it's always a good indicator of the restaurant being authentic and of a high standard. With Bento down the road having gone downhill markedly over the last few months (don't mention the fatty sushi), this really is the only one to bother with in this part of town.
10/10
Gem of a place. Very homecooked style Japanese food. Not crazy about the sushi here but the cooked food really hits the spot. Very good value for money and the service was pleasant and cheerful when I went. Top marks!
Slow service, Delicious food. Over the years I have heard many rave reviews about Asakusa, the almost legendary Japanese restaurant in the unlikely setting of Mornington Crescent.
I finally managed to get a reservation (you read that right) and headed down on a tuesday evening. Surprisingly for a midweek outing the restaurant was packed and I was glad to see some Japanese businessmen sitting merrily in the restaurant. It may sound like a cliche but to their decision to dine here reassured me.
The menu is extensive including several specialities plus the obligatory sushi menu and best of all the food is very well priced. I made sure i picked my favorite speciality una-don (eel over a bed of rice) and was extremely impressed.
The sushi was fresh as where the other ingredients making for a fantastic culinary treat. We even ordered a few "surprises" like stuffed aubergines which proved delicious
Asakusa's slightly dated decor adds character and authenticity to the small restaurant and the staff were extremely friendly. Sadly the restaurant loses a few points because the service was particularly sluggish. Though I had been warned this would be the case some sort of drink and/or snack to placate our hunger at the start would have been appreciated.
Having said that, considering the price and freshness of the food I will definitely be back
Fantastic, genuine Japanese food, and I know my Japanese;) the best Japanese I've eaten in London excellent value non pretentious fully Japanese on all aspects 5 stars!!!!
Possibly the best Japanese restaurant in London. Excellent, authentic dishes all reasonably priced.
Special sauce is not good enough a description for this amazing, out of this world, best sauce there is, sauce.
Just north of Euston but a few streets shy of Camden, Asakusa has the qualities of a hidden gem, although in reality it has a well-established and loyal following.
A place I wanted to go for a long long time was Asakusa. I found excellent reviews about the food , the price was reasonable, actually quite cheap, and every time I tried to go without a reservation was impossible to get a table, add to that a couple cancelled reservations as my friends changed their mind at the last moment or got busy. The Place Inside The place is quite small and intimate. Two levels and just a handful of tables in each of them. Simple decoration but nothing simple about the food and the vast menu offering Japanese classics including a Sake tasting which caught my eye and couldnât resist. I got to the place with my lovely friend Sarah, and we went with a mission trying as much as we could. Decor and Menu on the white board We went for sushi, sashimi, tempura, scallops, octopus, salmon, octopus, tofu, eel, seaweed, and of course the Sake sampler. The sampler brings three different Sakes, Akitabare (Northern Skies), Masumi (Mirror of Truth), and Dewazakura (Tenth
This small restaurant in Camden is quite a haunt for Japanese people, as well as those trying to have some authentic Japanese food. I've heard mostly good words about this place, bad words being: don't get caught in the basement! (Apparently if you don't
Asakusa, where have you been all my life? Three and a half years, 235 blog posts and over 200000 words; why has it taken this long? A few reasons. Firstly, and most importantly, I'd never heard of it. Secondly, it's in Camden, and as any Londoner knows, t
Good value for money! It is very difficult to find in London sushis places where you can try different things without spending all of your money. This place is really affordable which is quite nice because you can experiment different dishes on the menu. I tried the salmon teriyaki which was quite big and very tasteful. I also went for some gyoza, maki and sushis. I did not have to wait a lot to see my dishes come in the table and the waitress was very attentive to our table.
The only thing that I will say and I was a little bit disappointed of, was the fact that after 40 minutes of diner, I asked the waitress to have another salmon teriyaki and she replied to me that the next fish dishes would be only ready in 1 hour, so I will suggest you to order everything you can otherwise you might be confronted to the same issue. Concerning the atmosphere, the restaurant was quite busy for a Monday night and the decor of the place was quite poor.
It's very difficult to find foreign authentic cuisine in London, but Asakusa I'm pleased to say ticks that box for Japan. Located in Mornington Crescent, Asakusa serves delightful Japanese food ranging from sushi & sashimi, to terriyanki and teppanyaki all in a small, homey outlet. There isn't a lot of space, and every time I've booked I've had to arrive early (6pm) or late (9pm). The service is efficient, menu very reasonably priced (around 15-20 a head for a full meal with drinks), and food very tasty.
Asakusa is a huge step above the generic sushi and bento box chains around the city, and despite Camden not located within the City square mile, it attracts a certain clientele - locals and foodies. Definitely worth a visit (s), and I have not been disappointed once!
Casual dining and reasonable prices
Extensive menus and it was hard to choose what to eat as I wanted to try everything.
Love deep fried oysters and soft shell crabs! So tasty!
Great for family although the place is not that big.
This delightful and authentic Japanese sushi restaurant can become bustling, so be sure to reserve your seats in advance. Had the good fortune to have a few walk-in spots at the sushi bar on a Wednesday night.
The grilled salmon head, unagi (eel), and saba (mackerel) were standout delights on the menu. While everything was top-notch, these dishes are particularly memorable and worth a revisit. Unfortunately, they were out of uni and aji (horse mackerel) on this occasion, but there's always next time.
The sushi chef, a true artisan, remarkably handled the busy service solo, ensuring all patrons were satisfied.
With its laid-back ambiance and an unstuffy approach to excellent food, the restaurant promises a relaxed dining experience. All this coupled with generally reasonable pricing makes it a destination worth trying.
Pricey but tasty. Asakusa Udon is for someone who struggles to make choice like me. Unagi and mochi and chicken and ebi tempura all in a bowl. The strange combination coexist harmoniously.
Came in after afternoon nibbles so I gave up more solid dishes. Looking forward to try some sashimi or kaisendon next time. (And unfortunately, one of the sashimi order on our table is forgotten.)
What a gem! A little slice of Japan in Camden. Delicious authentic food, good service, cosy and atmospheric decor. Serves food late too
Super tasty food, and the owner really knows his sake! Really authentic food and atmosphere here, one of the best in london. The service can be a little slow when it's busy but never disappointed and always leave satisfied and full of sake. Be careful of the bill, this place can be very expensive.
Solid Japanese izakaya-type place. I prefer the hot foods here over sushi and sashimi. The top items were the buta kakuni and salmon head! Will be back to try more of their expensive menu..
Sushi is very tasty and fresh.
I had a frilled salmon as a main course, and same, fresh fish and tasty. Atmosphere is very nice and relaxing. I will definitely come back.
Made a reservation before coming here on a Thursday night after work and was happy that we did because 15 minutes after we sat down the restaurant was already half-filled!
Last time I came here was 4 years ago and this time round I ordered the exact same dish - Kaisen don, and its safe to say that this place managed to keep it's high standard! I was very happy with the food as the sashimi was extremely fresh, came in a big portion with a layer of rice at the bottom. Thoroughly enjoyed every single bite of it and even though it's now £15 more expensive than 4 years ago I thought it was a nice treat since I don't come here often.
Service was friendly, only downside was that the waiters didn't seem to be attentive enough as we had to wait and eventually ask them to come over and take our order.
Other than that we had a very enjoyable experience overall. The interior is very authentic, homely, Japanese style which made me feel like I was back in Japan. Definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic Japanese food and I will for sure come back here soon to try other things on the menu!
COME HERE FOR THE ASAKUSA UDON. Our favorite dish as we really enjoy the broth. Despite this, we still feel that the cost is a little expensive for what it is, considering portion size and added ingredients
Ownership has changed since I use to go years ago. Chef still there so that’s great. But sadly not 5 stars anymore because the size of their slightly expensive, very fresh fish is now small. £55 for this plate!!! Notice the huge piece of yellowtail in foreground of these photos? Notice the thin other pieces? How about those two top tuna roll pieces with hardly any fish? I expect at these prices that every £5+ individual piece of nigiri would be as big. Also the variety of fish and rolls has dwindled. Not many futomaki and no medium fat toro? Crabstick instead of real crab?!? Fatty toro behind yellowtail was tiny and £7 for one piece! Very strange considering yellowtail is usually expensive. If the fish wasn’t so fresh and tasty I’d give 3 stars.
Loved the interior. Friendly staff. Got a seat by the wall as I was eating alone.
Price was a little bit expensive and came to £39 just for the Kaisen don. It did come with some fish that's more uncommon. The tamagoyaki was huge but a bit too sweet.
Will come again to try the skewers!
Lovely little place with a great atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and attentive and were happy to accommodate us as walk-ins on a busy Tuesday. The food we chose was delicious and reasonably priced. I will definitely be going back to try some other things on their menu.
I love this place and have been coming here for years but not been for a while since turning veggie. Was nicely surprised by the great choice of noodles, tofu stake etc plus of course vegetarian sushi.
The battered round the edges old fashioned decor really works for me as the food is the real star here.
For a second, I though I was back in Japan! Sitting in the sushi bar, watching the chef prepping the dishes, and hearing the staff talking to each other in Japanese. Authentic izakaya experience just some minutes away from Camden Town Station. Food was delicious, menu is really extense, and staff was lovely. Will come back.
