Reviews The Portrait Restaurant

While I adore dining out in London and trying new spots, there are also a fair few places which I will try to frequent whenever I can. One such place is Portrait, the restaurant on the top floor in the National Portrait Gallery. High above the crowds and chaos of Trafalgar and Leicester Squares, this sweet little restaurant is an oasis of calm and deliciousness. So when Hannah, a friend of my friend Emily H, asked to meet in the centre of town for a lunch, I knew just the place!

Great Views Good Break. We spent the morning (and an hour after lunch) at the National Portrait Gallery. We booked lunch here in advance and had one of the nicest lunches of our stay in London. Pricey but well worth it for quality of food and for the view. Atmosphere very light and pleasant.

The place is normally busy and buzzing, so best to book. It also has a good view of Nelson's Column. We went for afternoon tea, taking up a special January

For staggeringly great views over the city's skyline with some equally staggeringly scrumptious food - head to Portrait at The National Portrait Gallery. I love the National Portrait Gallery and have been on many an occasion when I’ve time to kill in London. But even I was shocked to find out that there’s a restaurant on the top floor. They’ve kept it well hidden, which is confusing; especially when you emerge upstairs and find that the view is phenomenal. How can they be so quiet about it?   To find this true hidden gem you have to go to the top floor of the gallery, wander through where the paintings are taking in a few sights on the way, then up a little stair case and low and behold, there it is. We were lucky enough to get a table by the window for lunch, which meant that we could see out over Nelson’s Column, Trafalgar Square and off over the river into the distance; definitely a Kodak moment.   Although it was a bit of a grey day, the food cer

Portrait Gallery is consummate location to show off the city with a amazing view down Whitehall, with glass panelling surrounding the entire restaurant you are blown away by the view as soon as you vacate the lift on to restaurant floor. The Portrait restaurant affords you the relaxed setting to have not only a great view but welcomed conversation with your guests, unlike other restaurants here the environment is mellow rather then usual loud atmosphere of diners either clambering to talk to each other or the waiter. The staff are attentive and yet not over bearing, getting that balance of service and eloquence……..the location is another plus not only do you have one of London’s famous galleries downstairs but not a four minute walk are you from Trafalgar Square, were something is always happening.I decided to visit for breakfast having booked through opentable, where my request for a window table was honoured. We was sat down in a kindly manner with water severed as customary and once our orders were placed the food arrived no later than 8 minutes to our glee. The food was just as good as the view that captured us as we entered the room, satisfying does not begin to incapsulate the combination of service, view and food. It’s your choice as always but you must visit the portrait gallery restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner…..notice I didn’t say ‘or’.Cost of meal £20 -£40 Group size ~ 2 – 6 Location ~ National Portrait Gallery St Martins Place, London, WC2H 0HE.Carlstimeout rating~ 8.5/10Writer ~ C.Y

We have been to the Portrait Restaurant, in the National Portrait Gallery quite a few times now (for breakfast, brunch and lunch). It is on the top floor of the Gallery on the left hand side, going up the main escalator and taking the lift to the 3rd floor will get you there.

The place is normally busy and buzzing, so best to book. It also has a good view of Nelson's Column.

My husband and I stumbled on this restaurant late in the evening after a long day. We were tired and hungry. I thought this might be a simple place to pick up a sandwich. It was much fancier than I expected, but my meal ended up being my favorite in London. I got the gazpacho to start. It was amazing. We also had a table by the window with a great view.

Really enjoyed treating myself to lunch here. As a solo diner, I was pleased with the great table I was given with full view over Nelson’s column & Big Ben. Food was excellent value for the set lunch, and I especially enjoyed the whipped feta, peach and fennel starter and the Syrian rice pudding dessert. Service excellent and friendly throughout and I liked the buzzy but unpretentious atmosphere. Will definitely return!

Recently discovered a gem in the National Portrait Gallery: a new restaurant and bar with stunning London views. The drinks didn't disappoint – expertly crafted and flavorful. Next time, I'll delve into their food menu. A promising addition to London's dining scene, it’s a spot not to be missed for culture, cuisine, and city vistas.

I am generally wary of 'tourist' restaurants, but I feel compelled to write a few words for this gem. I visited with my wife last Saturday. The ladies at reception took it upon themselves to free up a wonderful table for us. They did this without being asked, an endearing gesture that was not lost on me. The setting and table service was impeccable. Most importantly, the dishes were thoughtfully conceived and perfectly executed... a delightful combination of flavour and texture. Meals rarely leave a lasting impression on me but the team at The Portrait have managed to where most Michelin star restaurants have not. A memorable and enjoyable first visit. One of many I hope.

Fabulous from start to finish. And Me Corrigan was very much present. We had a long late lunch. Every dish was sublime. Completely unhurried. And delighted to see all the staff eat at the end of service. And unrivalled views of London.. so do you want to watch the kitchen in action or look out over the skyline? Tough choice!

Everything was very good except for one major shortcoming and flaw… there’s an add on of 20% vat to the bill before the mandatory (always labeled as gratuity))!!!) service charge of 12.5 % which inflates the bill tremendously. So while you think you’re getting a bargain, you’re in fact not! The menu may inform you of this vat charge but it is not apparent and I did not see it or notice it. So be warned!

Great and unpretentious spot with friendly staff, amazing views, great cocktails and tasty food. The artichoke is probably the best I’ve ever had in my life.

The starters was really nice, the main we had didn't feel extra special. The view is unbeatable and also they serve the food very quickly.
