Small and personal with good choice of tasty dishes for group with Vegan, 2 meat eaters and a food snob!!
Atmospheric little bistro. Tried this out last night. Numidie specialises in French/North African cooking. Pretty room with large terracotta tiles, dark wood, turquoise walls and old chandeliers. One waitress very competently working the room which had about 10 tables. Snuggly bar downstairs with reportedly skilled and genial barman.
From the £12.50 set menu we had smoked fish bourek and duck with wasabi salad to start. The bourek was generous on the fish, the pastry was competent, but the sauce was a little sickly and the advertised 'pickles' consisted of two mini cornichons...the salad was pleasant enough, and plenty of duck, but no hint of wasabi whatsoever.
Mains were much more successful - truffled beef with pommes de terre dauphinoise (£2 supplement) and lamb shank with couscous. Both dishes were gorgeous and very deftly cooked. The beef was a generous and well trimmed portion, cooked as requested, the truffles coming through loud and clear. The lamb really did fall off the bone with a nudge of the fork, there was a lovely harissa-based sauce, and fluffy couscous studded with chickpeas and beans.
So, it wasn't brilliant, but gosh how refreshing to find a neighbourhood bistro that is friendly, welcoming, and gives you all that for £12.50!!
Oh, and a bottle of very warming Moroccan Merlot for £19.50.
We shall be back, possibly to try out the more tapas style menu in the basement snug.
The warm, atmospheric feel of Algeria is all wrapped up in this beautiful little building with perfectly attentive staff and knock out delicious food.
I have been a few times with various people and it's equally nice for bigger groups and a romantic meal. The meals are SO scrumptious and the menu offers a great selection to satisfy the taste-buds with intriguing flavours and combinations.
Veggies and carnivores can both be satisfied and one of the best things I had there was a ratatouille crepe... or the cous cous djej.... or one of the tagines... OH I DON'T KNOW, IT'S ALL DELICIOUS!
I've yet to check out some of the live music that features in the basement but I have been in the bar down there and it's a lovely setting too.
Would highly recommend you go here at least once, and really think you'll keep going back!
