Amazing place in London. I love the food. can’t wait to come back here again. Congratulations to the staff.
As per, the food was delicious. The Irish oysters are by the far the best, but if you prefer the milder flavour, the French maybe better. The octopus is an absolute must. Though I'd recommend the mixed fish grill also. The wine may be on the expensive side. The vibe is a very relaxed and jazzy. Be prepared to spend if you go out
On that very special day of the year, only somewhere very special will do. For Valentine’s Day this year, my boyfriend chose JSheekey Oyster Bar for a treat. Why? Because I am notorious in my love of oysters and a bit of bubbly. Normally my oysters arrive by the side of the pier in a seaside place like Whitstable or hand-shucked myself, simply because fancy places are too rich for my pay grade. Look how excited I am! Also a great excuse for a little Valentine’s red!
28-32 St. Martin’s Court, London WC2N 4AL Tel.: 020 7240 2565 . Thank Heaven for little Girls!. When I was a tiny tot, much to my delight, my father used to sing Maurice Chevalier’s ‘Thank Heaven for little Girls’ to me. How apt, how true! Daughters, especially when they are all grown up and lead their own interesting lives, can be such a delight to spend time with. I have one of those. She’s got an impressive career, is fairly newly married and expecting a baby literally any minute. Exciting times for us all! But that’s not all. I am also abundantly blessed with a high-flying legal eagle daughter-in-law, two step-daughters, one a successful business woman, the other a clever psychologist, and two step-daughters-in-law of equal competence in their respective fields. All of them are beautiful, charming and fun, and a joy to have in my life. The first two, the blondes, my daughter and my daughter-in-law, live in close proximity to me as well as to each other, so we have plenty of opportunity for girly get togethers and chinwags, and we certainly frequently indulge in those! No café in the SW London area is safe from our giggle and cupcake fests!
This place is like a classic English restaurant with its decor. Very friendly staff and food was not too bad. The cold shrimps were fresh and nicely presented. The sauce was a nice complement. The seared scallops were a little over cooked in my opinion. However, the flavour was not to disappointment at all. It was delicious nevertheless. Just the scallops were a tiny bit rubbery.
Wonderful fruit der mer lunch at the seafood bar accompanied by a little champagne and fine bottle of Voigner. Service impeccable, you really only need the portion for one which is more than adequate. Great atmosphere in lovely old establishment.
First Class. I've seen them at airports and what-have-you, but never been to an oyster bar before, thought that it might be quick and classy for a pre-theatre snack. Very friendly, genuine, prompt service - well you're right there at the bar, durrr... But they weren't in your face all the time, just there for you the instant you needed something. I like. Six fresh, clean mixed oysters, 1 fresh chicory salad, 1 sumptuous rich fish and sea food stew and a smoked mackerel frittata thingie. Carafe of Marsanne/Viognier, a large glass of Albariño [not on the Oyster bar wine list, but was instantly produced from the restaurant when I asked] which was a superb combination. No better wine to go with fish, for me, anyway. 1 Blackberry sponge with custard, 1 coffee and 1 calvados brought the whole meal to a groin-clenching £120 inc tip for two . I used numbers just now because we shared all the dishes and drinks, having two of everything would have inflated the cost, but I have spent far more on a meal and enjoyed it a great deal less. I am really tempted to "favourite" this place, but I fear it would bankrupt me. Maybe if those inept, bonus-quaffing buffoons at RBS would mend their [our] broken bank and push the share price up I could eat here on a regular basis. Until then I shall have fond memories of an exhilarating 90 minutes, like a Champions' League Final. Except we didn't change ends at half-time. And there was no football.
A fabulous restaurant. I went to J Sheeky for a birthday celebration and overall it was a memorable and enjoyable experience. The food was excellent and seafood is their specialty. The gravlax with marinated cucumber and a Swedish mustard dressing was sublime, as were the oysters and the monkfish & tiger prawn curry. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for good quality seafood.
Food: 8 / 10
Service: 7 / 10
Ambience: 8 / 10
Stunning fish. Stunning cod in salt, but mediocre cocktails
Miss Rogers. J Sheekey has an oyster bar which is 3 years old about and I enjoyed my oysters with champagne. My Stone Bass Cerviche with Plantain crisps was fresh and reminding me of when I had it in Peru. The expresso and chocolate truffles were heaven. I liked remembering my time when I was a child going to Sheeky's and know I am an adult to enjoy the special foods of life.
Simply sophistication! Oozes class and glamour and great fish!
Cover Charge Required. Not sure why you pay a cover charge on a 200GBP bill. Brill was excellent but Dover Sole was perfect. Great spot if you're craving good seafood.
My wife and I love the Atlantic Prawns and Crab Pate with a nice bottle of white
Love it. Had a great Meal here the other day. Rather expensive but nice food
Best Fish Restaurant. For me this is still the best Fish restaurant in London despite various changes of ownership of the group it's part of which includes The Ivy and Le Caprice .
The make a fantastic Dover Sole Meniere on request and Oysters (in season) are always a delight.
Good solid deserts and there are also choices for veggies and meat lovers.
I had a great time and I think one of the reasons was is that it's been around for such a long time, no-one's trying to be cool or innovative. It's old-school, traditional and it's been there for yonks. And looking around, it's full of first dates and senior citizens. There was a ridiculously posh table nearby which we observed with glee as they got more sloshed.
The food was perfectly cooked: the bernaise was both unctuous and light, the sole practically melted in the mouth. The Hubby's fish and chips really did look delicious, and he tucked in with gusto.
There are few places that really live up to their reputation and after last night I can see why people really do rave about J Sheekey. It was late, I was tired and the cold night was beginning to make me somewhat irritable. We arrived slightly early for our post theatre table and were greeted on the door by a smiling man with the most fabulous bushy moustache I've ever seen... After the cold night outside the warm and welcoming interior was literally like a hug from a long lost friend that I didn't know I had. The decor screams old school as you walk to your table; from the wood panel walls to traditional table dressing it all fits and feels very considered. There is nothing out of place and nothing that isn't necessary. Just sitting at the table feels like a bit of a treat; so coming here to celebrate a birthday fits perfectly. J Sheekey is essentially a fish and seafood joint, if you are not a fan of either you'll probably be better served goin
My recent trip to J Sheekey restaurant saw me enjoy the food but come away not wanting to return any time soon. The food for the most part is great, a wide variety
When I talk about an Oyster is not about the tube but the J Sheekey Oyster Bar . Sophisticated seafood and oyster bar in opened in 2008 in Leicester Square. Upscale, modern, Jazz atmosphere, and good service
Going to J Sheekeys for their fruits de mer platter is for me the equivalent of walking into a spa. A brief respite of pure unadulterated luxury. It hasn't changed here in years, and I mean that in a very good way.
I had wanted to go to J. Sheekey for ages. Whilst the press focusses on their celeb clientele, I had always heard that the food was amazing. Well today, I realised my long-held ambition to go there and I can confirm the food is amazing. There was a slight
J. Sheekey, the fish and seafood specialist hidden just off St Martin's Lane, is the equally successful but never-quite-as-famous sibling of Scott's in Mayfair; Maggie Gyllenhaal to Scott's' Jake . It's also one of my absolutely favourite restaurants of a
There is money behind J Sheekey. The ultimate owner, Richard Caring bought the Caprice galaxy of restaurants, amongst other things for a cool £30m in 2005 with a view to transform it into a superbrand of luxury eateries. This very group also includes some
The oyster bar at J. Sheekey is empty at 3 p.m. on a Sunday. This isn't a bad thing for us. I feel like I've met our server before--I really should have asked where he used to work. And we settle in for some champagne and some oysters. Only problem is tha
Contrary to my history of reviews, seafood is my favourite kind of food.
In their seafood platter, J Sheekay brings you that wonderful mix of flavours you want from seafood, so different from anything you taste on a regular basis. The food was divine. Best seafood I've ever had in my life, and a wide collection of it so there was a lot of choice too. Great romantic ambience, and perfect service. Don't think you could ask for more.
J Sheekey serves up a complete array of seafood. I love the North Atlantic sea bass and the Scottish salmon. They have also a good range of baked fish if you're tired of the typical fried fish options.
It's a classic old restaurant, with dark wooden panelling and a great ambience. Wonderful place to go if you're a real seafood fan.
Quite famous around London and I have to say, not overrated at all. Impeccable service with a cozy and romantic atmosphere. The starter of fried courgette flower and burrata is to die for - the courgette flower was in the lightest of batters, still warm and crunchy together with the cold, creamy burrata that seemed to have just been delivered from Italy. The fish, too, was incredibly fresh. I had the sole that was accompanied with a delicious bearnaise sauce. Even their desserts were amazing. Sweet caramelized figs with mascarpone ice cream and amaretti.. as good as it sounds.
This must be London's best fish restaurant. Located in the heart of covent garden, it's just so traditional. Quite cozy and tight inside, the walls are beautiful oak panels and covered in photos of famous folk who have visited.
Service is very slick and attentive.
The menu really needs studying and is crammed with fabulous fish dishes of course. My friend had fish and chips and I had roasted cod on a bed of some tasty things, really nice.
Definitely recommend for a touch of class and tradition with amazing fish.
It's a speciality sea food restaurant, so unsurprisingly they have a very extensive menu with a lot of variety. Everything on the menu is fresh and is very well done. We started the meal with a selection of oysters for the table which was pretty cool.
I had the pan fried ray wing for the mains - never had a better one before this or after this in fact. So would highly recommend that.
I love Oysters so couldn't be happier than when I am ensconced at the bar in J Sheekey with dozen Lindisfarne Rock Oysters in front of me. The staff are always incredibly friendly which is good as they are usually about a foot infront of you at all times. There is also a wide selection of seafood and fish on offer for those who don't like the sliminess. The bloody mary's are also brilliant. The decor evokes a lost era of glamour and the atmosphere is serene but bubbly. One of my favorite spots I return to again and again.
Very good restaurant, but also not for everyone - the menu is not very “universal”, as this place focuses on seafood dishes. They were tasty, nicely served and properly prepared. However, it’s not a five star restaurant to me, cause doing everything good is expected these days. And it was rather expensive, so one can expect a bit more.
Simply outstanding food, service, and ambiance. We've eaten our way through the UK top to bottom and hands down, J. Sheekey was the best so far. The scallops were amazing. The Sole and Halibut were prepared perfectly. The sides were spot on, and the mango and passion fruit cheesecake was delicate and brilliantly prepared. It made the 20yr Tawny port shine. It was our pleasure to dine with you.
I had an amazing experience at this restaurant! The food was simply outstanding, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. The restaurant's decor is designed to look like a train, and it's simply beautiful inside. The oysters were some of the best I've ever had, and the seafood platter was absolutely delicious. The desserts were also amazing - not only did they look beautiful, but they tasted incredible.
As a seafood lover, I highly recommend this restaurant. We went there to celebrate Father's Day, and it was the perfect choice. While the prices are on the expensive side, it's definitely worth it for the quality of food and service you receive. I would definitely go back again in the future!
If you like fish, you'll love J Sheekey. Food quality is superb albeit a bit pricey, but where isn't these post pandemic days in London. Restaurant was established in 1896 and its probably only been refitted once or twice since then. It has an old school charm about that would be hard to replicate. You immediately feel cosy and relaxed as 100's of black and white photos of the stars of yesteryear gaze down upon you. It's certainly an experience.
Five stars all the way for J Sheekey! In honesty the venues location initially made me concerned, anticipating another central London hyped restaurant.
Fortunately we were delightfully surprised by both J Sheekey’s ambiance, service and most importantly food!
Dishes sampled were: roasted octopus; oysters; roasted salmon; hake and the Dover sole which was served off the bone with béarnaise sauce 👌🏻
If you’re also a fan of celebs, you can’t go far wrong!
Some restaurants are just class, have always been classy and hopefully will always be classy. J Sheekey is one such establishment and always delivers in terms of food quality and service. On this visit I tried the Galician octopus for starters which was really good and reminded me of dining alfresco on the Mediterranean. For my main I chose the lobster thermidor and fries which had a great sauce and really hit the spot. I finished with a double expresso and as always really enjoyed the experience. Yes this place is a bit expensive but IMHO it is well worth it.
Always on my London hit list while in town. Food is delicious, the service of high standard. I was sat behind the hostess in the small no man’s land and I do much prefer to be in the main dining room action, which was more my fault for not booking on a busy Friday lunch. I’d been at The Ivy day before and I think JS fish and chips is much better! Controversial :) But try them both, both iconic.
It's a great location, the service is exceptional, and the food was mediocre. In general service in London is much slower compared to the US, but this group was fast and highly attentive. The burrata itself was good, the tomato's were well prepared, but it was all accompanied by cheap olives that overpowered the dish. We also had the curried fish and there was nothing good or bad about it.
This was our first time at J Sheekey and we came here for our wedding anniversary lunch. The interior decoration is very modern and the atmosphere very nice. The service and staff were really nice as well. We shared a lovely seafood bisque and the mushroom risotto was very creamy and delicious. We shared a cold and hot seafood platter. Both were good and very filling. Highly recommend.
My wife and I shared a seafood platter which consisted of oysters, dressed crab, cockles, prawns, langostino mussels and more. We enjoyed it very much. The service was very good and price was reasonable. An ideal restaurant for anyone who enjoys seafood.
Enjoyed a delightful dinner with friends. The taste of the starter, which was king prawns and scallops, bore quite a resemblance to authentic Chinese cuisine. Delicious!
Attentive front desk that made sure the meal finished in time to get to our 7:30pm show. Food overall was good but a little too salty for me, in particular the fish stew. Bar service could be improved as our drinks arrived just as we finished our starters.
Best place for seafood and spot on cocktails
In the heart of the theatre district, we found this gem that got us to return (rare for us) for their oysters and cocktails.
The Nutcracker cocktail was the Best Holiday Cocktail creation I had this season in London. Fingers crossed, they turn it into a regular.
Food was melting in your mouth and fresh.
Delicious and varied types of oysters
Soft, tender octopus
Lovely scallops
Tasty crab
Enchanting fusion salmon
Great mix seafood platter
Always too full for desert, which goes to praise their food.
Service was lovely. It would have been 5 starts if not for a 'trying to be funny but inappropriate' waiter.
Atmosphere nice, great decorum, soft background music.
Stopped by for an early dinner with my friend. The venue looks great and impeccable. Menu was simple and food decent, maybe we were expecting something more particular for the price. But the service was great provided by Zain and Paula, who are been helpful and smiling.
Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Came here with my friends, we all love seafood and we were not disappointed. My friend was visiting from the US and she couldn't rave about this place enough. The staff were all amazing and so attentive to our needs. The service was second to none. Cannot wait to return. I had the prawn and monkfish curry which was delicious 😋
What can I say !! What an establishment . Not only was I once a chef de Partie here , some 32 years ago please to attach my reference , the standards are just as good and as high as ever .
We had special of the day Halibut , some extra veggies all cooked to perfection … even the still water tasted good !! Service was exceptional and friendly . Will be back !! For a lunch to remember ..
I love Sheekey’s. The food and service are perfection as is the location- there are so few decent independent places to eat around St. Martin’s Lane now and Sheekey’s is still a beacon for delicious seafood, great wine and utterly charming staff. We shared a dozen Jersey oysters and I had the Cornish Fish Stew while my Companion had the famous fish pie. Wine and champagne were great and we were warmly welcomed without a booking. Yes, it is pricey but 100% worth it if you can afford it as it is the kind of experience you rarely find in the West End these days.
