South Woodford is hardly a shimmy away from my Walthamstow home. And as pleasant as it is, this edge of east London community is hardly known as a hub of gourmet destination. So when I heard word of Michelin star restaurateur Rajesh Suri (ex Tamarind Collection) and acclaimed Head Chef Dayashankar Sharma having opened a modern Indian restaurant there at the end of last year, I was excited to give it a go.

The starters were tasty! The lamb was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The biriani was slightly underwhelming taste wise for the price point. The restaurant has a nice interior that is suitable for nice meals out with family and colleagues. The staff were attentive helpful.

Been twice, once many years ago and yesterday. Yesterday's meal was utterly scrumptious, packed with flavour. The set menu is excellent value although would forgo the dessert next time as it wasn't so good. Chicken 2 way was excellent as was the lamb ghost. Ordered an extra peshawari naan as it doesn't come with many peices per person with the set menu. This too was high end naan. If I'm being critical the poppadom portion is very small. Overall a great dining experience. Service is attentive and friendly.

Finally, clean, good quality Indian food! So many times I’ve come back from a local Indian restaurants that put so much oil and butter in their food that afterwards I feel lethargic and my insides don’t feel right. With this place, I felt great, even after 2 hours of badminton! The food was authentic, the service was brilliant and the room was buzzing. You’ve got to try the rogan josh and butter chicken. I was also made the most amazing cocktail by their mixologist Victor. It’s so hard to get a variation on an Old Fashioned right but he really delivered - it was so tasty and the sweetness cut through the spiciness of the starters to make the perfect pairing.

If you're walking by, you would never imagine how beautiful, classy, welcoming and elegant the location is on the inside. The staff is extra-kind, friendly, chic, and attentive. I appreciated they offered to take our coats and the cleanness of our table, wiping it a couple of times in between our courses. The toilets are easy to access and clean. As a starter, they offer you water and poppadoms baskets (they keep bringing sauces). The cocktails were well-made. Five stars to the bartender. We had the Afghani Silk and the Spiced Old Fashioned. The food was of excellent quality and perfectly cooked. Scallops and crab opened our appetite; I had the Amristari butter chicken with naan bread (the bread was surprisingly sweet, and I noticed it had coconut inside, delicious!). The others had Bengali Pepper Fish, Tiger prawns and Lamb Curry. I also ordered a salad, and they brought me the GRT salad, but I couldn't eat it because it was too hot for my taste; however, my friends loved it! Anything you'll pick will amuse your palate! We ended our culinary experience with a mango Brulee and Gulab Jaman accompanied by a ball of vanilla ice cream, too good to be described! We paid 260£ for 4. I think it is high-priced, but the overall experience will satisfy you.

The food here is excellent. The chicken is very tender - you can tell it’s good quality meat. An excellent combination of flavours. Beautifully decorated with a wonderful atmosphere. I’d say it’s perfect for a birthday party, catch up with friends or a romantic date. Very attentive service and staff.

A real mixed bag ranging from sensational deserts to an awful pseudo biryani. We went for a birthday celebration and this was a convenient location, saving us the trek into town. Ambience and decor were conducive to fine dining. The tables were full but it was not noisy and no awful music. One of our party has a serious shellfish allergy and they were very considerate about that. The starters were very good. We got about 6 I think. Grilled chickens and fish. All the fish dishes were perfectly cooked. We ordered truffle and mushroom naan which had no taste of truffle or mushroom. Very disappointing. The major disappointment was the lamb biryani. This was not a biryani by any stretch, it was more like a pilaf. The lamb pieces contained inedible grissly bits which is unforgivable bearing in mind what they were charging for it. The aubergine dish was right up my street. The deserts were sensational. We ordered mango brulee and a weird sounding avocado and rose icecream, which is worth going back for again and again. I also ordered a coffee which was surprisingly excellent. This is a pricey place so they cannot serve substandard food if they want customers to return.

Grand Trunk Road is a fine dining experience, which means that the portion sizes are healthier and the food is freshly made. Because of this, the food is slightly more expensive and takes slightly longer than other local restaurants. With that said, there truly isn't another restaurant quite like it nearby. The menu is slim, but each option offers different flavours so to suit everyone's needs. As a vegetarian, there were plenty of options to choose, and those options were delicious. Perhaps the most unusual part of my meal was the Truffle & Mushroom Naan. I've never seen it anywhere else, but it's a clear winner in my books. When it came to dessert, I went with Mango & Basil Sorbet. Initially put off by the idea of basil, I placed my trust that the kitchen knew what they were doing. For the most part, it was mostly just mango flavoured and the basil was barely detectable. Which is fine by me. On this occasion I did not feel so adventurous as to try the Rose Petal & Avocado ice cream, but next time I hope to try it. It's also worth mentioning that the service was as excellent as the food itself. The staff were professional, welcoming, and attentive to us. It's a really special restaurant and is much more enjoyable than nearby competitors.

We had several dishes ordered for our group. They catered to my sensitivity to spicy food by cooking special dishes that I can eat & enjoy. Great atmosphere, attentive staff and of course, wonderful food. Highly recommended.

We had a very enjoyable experience at Grand Trunk Road. Excellent food that was not the "clone" menu of your typical Indian restaurant. My favourite was the Punjabi Murgh Masala, though it must be noted that the Coastal prawn curry was the best prawn curry I've ever had. The service was excellent and all the staff were very accommodating. I would recommend this restaurant unreservedly!

We had the tasting menu. The food is nothing short of amazing! The service is friendly and the boss seems to be on top of everything. I don't think there's better food in the South Woodford area. Would recommend!

This is not your average Indian curry restaurant! Limited menu of special and delicious dishes. Best popadums ever. Great service in classy decor but be prepared to pay more for this.
