The burger reviews are back! I may be a little late to the party on this one, and not even graciously so, not to mention it’s not exactly your independent burger joint. But, I was enticed by the “best burger in London” tag line.
Considering I’m pretty much becoming renowned for my love of burgers, this restaurant was actually a suggestion – read on to see what I thought.
Considering the late dinner, around 21:30, which was during the week, this place was absolutely buzzing. It is a small intimate venue, but for this time and day it was surprising – there were some people even braving the cold eating outside. We however opted to wait for around 10 minutes to get all cosied up inside.
When we were led to the main seating area you were literally transported to a cottage, beautiful aged wood, exposed ceiling beams, and even the ceiling was gable shaped. It had a sort of country-esque essence to it, and the room was beautifully decorated with trinkets and even a huge wall definition of what the word haché means and where it derives from. Considering the back story of this restaurant is that at it’s a heart family brand, with the true essence coming from France, it’s good to see this message throughout.
If the heading on the menu reads ‘Scotch beef steak burgers’ you know shit is about to get real, and it did. I stared at this menu for a good 10 minutes before I decided to go for the Steak Blue Cheese; topped with the finest melted mature Stilton cheese. You do get the option for either a ciabatta or brioche bun – obviously, I went for the brioche.
Unfortunately they didn’t toast the brioche bun, so it was literally a disaster waiting to happen. The bun was literally flaking away, so I ended up with the dreaded meat with no bun. It wasn’t that big a deal though to be fair, as the burger was absolutely delicious. The actual beef patty was pretty thick, but not too obscene, and the cheese – oh wow that cheese. I’ve had a fair few cheese options, some have cooked the cheese in to the patty, some pop the cheese on after it’s been cooked so it’s semi melted and still semi solid, but Haché opted for the melted oozed in to all the gaps luxuriousness. The Stilton brought earthy tones which complimented the meat perfectly, not overpowering at all. I did actually break this up with sweet caramelised onions in the burger – which were meh.
Now, as I said before, the word haché means minced, and derives from the French action to chop. It’s of course no surprise that the patty still retains it’s minced texture, it’s not too condensed and packed together, which allows the seasoning and flavours to filter through the entire meat, but also allows this almost melting texture in the mouth. Pretty delightful, the only other place that could rival this sort of texture is Soho’s BRGR.CO.
Alongside the burger I decided to go in with the sides; sweet potato fries, onion rings and normal fries. It was a huge portion, and to be honest with you, the sweet potato fries were the absolute bomb. The onion rings had way too much batter on them, which was hardly seasoned – I genuinely felt like I was just eating cardboard. The fries, were well fries, but those sweet sweet potato fries. That’s all I’ll be ordering next time.
The presentation was amazing, they come in this tiny little metal basket, a miniature version of what you would use to deep fry chips. I have to be honest, we did get some absolutely crazed, confused, and even impressed looks when we ordered the amount of food we did. It’s actually decently priced with your burgers being huge and less than £10 and the sides costing no more than £3 – pretty good going considering the central location of where we were eating.
The staff were super attentive, the service is quick, the location is amazing, the food is wonderful – definite burger crush. It’s hard to resist when their burgers are essentially foodie gold; I really don’t know why it took me so long to visit this place. Well until next time!
