Reviews Les 110 De Taillevent

When I lived in Baku, Azerbaijan from 2013 to 2015, I came across a young British Chef, Reuben Gould. So talented was he, that, like the Lovely Husband in the medical field, he had been especially commissioned by the president of the country to run several of Baku’s top eateries. Every meal I ate at any one of these restaurants during my time there was exquisite, and he has remained one of my favourite chefs of all times. We’ve peripherally stayed in touch via Facebook, so I was very interested to read one of his recent posts, extolling the virtues of iconic twice Michelin starred Les 110 de Taillevent on the smart Rue Faubourg Saint Honoré in Paris, which, he says, provided him with some of the best food he has ever eaten with wine to match. Coming from him, a culinary master par excellence, this is high praise indeed.

Fine dining, Champagne to start, a magnificent dining room and even better wines. Just some of my favourite things. I used to work in Marylebone for years until recently and never did I ever expect a restaurant to actually open on Cavendish Square. A place (with the exception of a members bar) which is normally only associated by corporate business’s and John Lewis. Now it’s home a wonderful restaurant named Les 110 de Taillevent.

It will come as no surprise to regular readers of London-Unattached that I was keen to visit Les 110 de Taillevent in Cavendish Square.  The London outpost of the iconic two Michelin-starred Le Taillevent sits along one side of Cavendish Square, just behind Oxford Street.  Inside, a contemporary take on the bistro with green leather banquettes and seating with the wines neatly stored behind a bar.  It felt like a classic; comfortable and yet elegant.  And, I was pretty sure, even before I looked at the menu, that  I would want to go back.

Sometimes I surprise even myself.  I am not talking here of my witty eloquence.  Nor of my transcendent photo taking skills.  Nor of the almost implausible manner in which I weave these two together.  Instead, it was a visit of a teetotaller to a restaurant known for its rather diverse and far reaching wine cellar.  Guess my companion will have to make up for my lack.

Fun place for wine enthusiasts especially, but if you're someone who just enjoys a glass here and there, you'll be able to have a nice meal while still having the option of nerding out on wine if you'd like.

The structure of the menu is quite ingenious while being incredibly approachable. The dishes are listed with their recommended wines listed from left to right in order of price. The wines are offered in full or half glasses, giving those who wish to try a wider spectrum of wines of the 110 wines listed the option without breaking having to bank the bank or fall over. Each glass of wine also comes with a little label with it's name on it so you can tuck it away for notekeeping if you wish.

The restaurant is spacious with high ceilings and wooden floors (but remains at a very tolerable noise level due to a lack of music being played. Surely a welcome change of pace for some wishing to breakaway from the hustle and bustle of central.)

The food itself is adequately prepared across the board. For a starter, I opted for a main of Le vol au vent (25gbp). Essentially a pastry encasing crayfish and sweetbreads, a modernized take on surf and turf. Everything here was adequately prepared. The pastry was cooked through while being extremely flaky and buttery. It fully absorbed the surrounding veal/shellfish reduction as you break into it (which you want to do as the sauce is delicious.) I do find the pairing of crayfish and sweetbreads to be quite odd in itself, as these are two things which are quite similar texturally, but everything tasted spot on.

My second choice for my main, (my main main...main) were the veal kidneys (19gbp). These were served simply with a balsamic vinegar and port sauce. A very sensible pairing of ingredients, as veal kidneys tend to have a bit of a metallic taste to them. I have to say though, that this was almost not present in these at all. Some of the cleanest kidneys I've ever had. They were cooked perfectly pink in the middle and had an incredibly milky taste to them. Milky is the perfect word for these. Imagine chewing on meaty milk while having a penny lodged underneath your tongue. That would be pretty in line with a typical veal kidney experience. It's more pleasant than it sounds.

Adequate, well priced food. Wide selection of wine that I can order without feeling like a dolt, and they serve food all day. Great, versatile place.

I’d done a double take when I’d seen the hoardings around the old Coutts building with the word Taillevent plastered over them. It couldn’t be something to do with the legendary Taillevent restaurant in Paris, I thought, not here,  opposite the back entrance of John Lewis. But I was wrong. Brand Taillevent was never going to venture into in the grungy gastropub arena, so you will not be surprised to learn that this is a formal brasserie, the twist being the one hundred and ten wines (the “110” in the name) served by the glass.

A couple of weeks ago I went to an event held to publicise the launch of a range of new flavours of Kettle Chips. Ordinarily, I would not be that interested in a new flavour of Kettle Chips, and I suspect Kettle Chips know this as well because to ensure a very healthy attendance from London's gathered foodie people they paid Simon Rogan to cook us a three course dinner. So we started with Wensleydale cheese dumplings with butternut squash (a light, herby dish that brought to mind a Westcombe Cheddar course from a life-changing meal at l'Enclume a few years back), then had Gressingham Duck breast and leg with creamed kale and Wiltshire truffle (all kinds of wonderful, nuanced and rich with the flavours of late autumn) and finally Maldon salted chocolate and jasmine with sorrel (soft/crisp textures and chocolate/citrus balanced to world-class effect). It was, in short, a masterclass by what I'm going to go ahead and call the UK's best chef, whether he likes it or not. Oh, and the chips weren't bad either (my fav was the Wensleydale cheese).

Great Décor and although you would expect this restaurant in Mayfair it is still easy to get to. Great food and good acoustics so easy to talk. Reasonable prices which came in at £50 per head although we did not all have starters or dessert and only glass of wine. One thing to bear in mind is that they don't give you coke cola when you ask for it you get a different brand called curiosity cola which tastes more like a brewed ginger beer so something to bear in mind. One guest had the set menu and I had the Sirloin Steak with Chips and peppercorn sauce with mashed potatoes and mushrooms and all perfect. We also shared a desert called "Childhood Memories" which is great actually to share as you get a selection of desserts in small separate portions.  Staff speak English and French so really know the food.I would highly recommend and hope to go again soon, treated very well by all the staff.

Dinner for two at 110 Taillevent, their wine selection is amazing and not overpriced, and their food was very well executed and paired with the wine very well. Great service as well and we were well taken care off in an unfussy manner throughout the night. What is particularly great is that the wine by glass selection is wide and caters to most tastes. Will definitely be back!

The staff was great and professional, especially the sommelier who you cold tell so loves what he does. Even got to meet the chef who is very nice and talented. I highly recommend. 👌💟

Wonderful value for money, and an amazing winelist (by the glass at that!) Service was welcoming and warm, yet professional. Food was super tasty, with little points of difference to make it interesting and not too heavy.

Dined here this evening and felt compelled to write a review. The Lithuanian waiter was so friendly and sweet. The wine sommelier knew everything about his extensive wine list and gave great information surrounding the wines we chose. Portions are decent - not too big, or small. Just right. We had scallops, beef tartare, turbot & sirloin. Plus the sides. All delicious and cooked/prepared with detail, care and love. Delicious from start to finish.

A stunning venue with superb food, expertly paired with wine, exceptional customer service. We had a taster menu, and each course was just incredible! If we were to choose one course that stood out - it would be an impossible task.. but...cured scallops with foie gras, truffle and sourdough croutons were our favourite! If you would like a special night out, this is the place to go. Highly recommended!

This is a wonderful place for a gastronomic experience. They have an extensive wine selection. We had the two tasting menu options. My son & wife had the. Four course Summer menu & I had the six course tasting menu paired with wine. It was absolutely amazing. Definitely on the pricey side.
