Amazing place in London. I love the food. can’t wait to come back here again. Congratulations to the staff.
This fine dine is extremely expensive but worth its exclusivity. The pancakes and the cocktails did all the justice for me.
I finally had the chance to go to London's oldest restaurant, and also sit in the exact same table that M sat at in Spectre!
The dining room is absolutely sumptuous and the gilding is eye watering. Service was warm and friendly. I had oysters, my sister had the cauliflower and mussel soup which was AMAZING, my mouth waters thinking about it. It was rich and creamy and studded with massive mussels, so delicious.
We shared the rib eye for 2, the beef was perfectly cooked and deliciously fatty, accompanied with salted cabbage, gravy and light and crispy Yorkshire puddings. We also had dauphonoise potatoes on the side which was very good.
We were so full but couldn't leave without trying at least one dessert from the tempting menu! The sticky toffee pudding was excellent, a light spongy and moist texture which came with creme fraiche which didn't make it overly sweet.
Highly recommended for a fancy Sunday lunch and experiencing a slice of old London!
My wife an I had dinner before going to the theatre and I can say it was amazing the food, service and ambiance was second to none. Rule's is a must go to restaurant when in London. I would recommend this restaurant for all occasions.
Hand down one of the best meals I have eaten, there is a reason this establishment has lasted since the late 1700s, we ordered the Lamb Shoulder, Chicken and Venison and was not one single person disappointed with their meal, the young French girl serving us was great and the meals were well worth the price we paid.
May seem expensive but the old adage, you get what you pay for fits here.
Excellent service...
Heavenly desserts...
Very generous portions..
Must try if you get the reservations 😋 and wish to have a slice of history along with traditional British food... The restaurant is more than 200 users old
For an experience with traditional English fare like Steak and Kidney Pie to fresh game like Squib Pigeon or Rabbit, this place is great. The meals are reasonable for the price and quality and the service is outstanding. The portions are double most higher end restaurants.
You always hear about Rules. It’s the oldest restaurant in London, and it’s the place that the tourists always seem to want to go to. They film scenes for Downton Abbey there. But it’s not really one of those places that I ever really thought about going. I’m not sure why. But lately everyone I know has been talking about it, so one night we took the plunge with some friends and decided to give it a try.
Sometimes special occasions deserve the right treatment. Not sure if a ‘something’ birthday is such an occasion but I was treated to a fantastic dinner nevertheless at London’s oldest restaurant, Rules. I had never been there in my 19 years in the city but I knew of it and was pleasantly surprised by a great meal and experience

Service was excellent, it was formally with a touch of humour without the stuffiness. And I was in love with the classy and glamour decor, for a slice of old school British charm, I can't think of a better place than Rules in London.
I've been meaning to go to this restaurant for years and finally managed to get there a couple of Sunday's ago. It's very British, especially the host who greeted us. The place is welcoming and we were shown to a lovely red leather booth. We had already decided to share the Roast Rib of Beef beforehand. For starters though we had the venison carpaccio and the game terrine. Both dishes were very good, I think the terrine would have been great with a piccalilli or similar rather than a few cornichons though. The service was a little hit and miss. The waiter kind of dropped our starters in front of us without stopping as he went past. Very abrupt service by some of the waiters, although a couple of them were better. You are also only given two hours for a reservation, I know this is often practiced but it doesn't make me like it any more. Anyway, the rib of beef was absolutely superb as were the massive Yorkshire puddings it came with. We ordered some dauphinois potatoes and some vegetables to accompany. For dessert we had the crumble and custard and the steamed treacle pudding both were very nice too. It's not a cheap restaurant but then again what is in London these days? The rib of beef is £35 ish per person, but it was fantastic. I also have to mention the generous amount of homemade horseradish sauce, again this was excellent. Was very surprised to see the restaurant featured in the new James Bond film last night, had no idea, we were sat a couple of tables away, different day though!
I had lunch at Rules over Christmas with a couple of friends. Starting from the entrance with the man on the door dressed in an ye olde world uniform (see the website homepage) then the fantastically designed interior, a very old traditional setting and then the service, which is impeccable, you know you are in for a meal of a lifetime.
The menu is mostly centred around game, with some incredible pies and side dishes. The wine list is pretty good but pricey as is the norm in London. It is an absolute must for a long boozy lunch or a family meal. It is a must in any case

Rules in Covent Garden is London’s oldest restaurant and after many months of thinking that I needed to check out their Gluten Free Dining options, I made a super last minute Sunday lunch reservation to see what was on offer. G and I both have a sweet tooth so we always check what’s on offer in the dessert section first before deciding if we want to order starters – on this occasion there were some fabulous desserts on offer so we avoided the starters in favour of something sweet later on.
One of the best. Rules could trade on its reputation for years and still be full every night with just competent food, but the game here is second to none. We had a £500 meal for 4 of us in the autumn and it was stunning - grouse and a couple of decent bottles soon took us to that total and none of us resented paying the bill.
We also often eat here for a lot less.
Rules rules. Just been for a second visit, this time with wine. Albariño on the list. What can I say, always a good sign. Excellent food and service. Just noticed there's a secluded cocktail bar upstairs... Pity the maitre d' failed to direct us towards it instead of first leading us on a complete circuit looking for a table and then bringing us back to reception while a table was laid for us. Would have loved a pre-lunch martini.
Just as I envisioned British fare. I found Rules online and wasn't sure if it would live up to my expectations, but it was wonderful! The history of the restaurant was enough to pull me in, but the food is amazing. They had grouse, although I didn't know what it was to order it and had venison instead, but regretted not getting the grouse once someone next to us got it. If you are looking for a traditional, British experience with rich history, this is the place!
A Taste of England. This is expensive, its also lovely.
If I was to recommend one restaurant that summed up all thats great about British Dining, Rules would be it.
Fantastic Pies, Game, did I mention they Roast things? The Wine list rocks aswell.
Bring your checkbook.
My favourite restaurant. Fantastic for every special occasion and never had a bad experience there. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
It's more of a parody of back in the day London cuisine, but still the food is very good and service exceptional. I would bring my American friends here as a must but would not be my choice for a romanic date with my wife or a meal with local friends. Ott, but that's what it's supposed to be.
Proudly presenting itself as London’s Oldest Restaurant I generally knew that venerable Rules Restaurant on Maiden Lane was unlikely to wow after lunch at The Fat Duck but with modest expectations of British classics served in a storied environment I booked a table for one at 7:00pm, several hundred World C
A great place, although definitely in the "treat" category as you couldn't afford to go regularly.
I firmly believe that many "foodies" out there discount the oldest restaurant in London, Rules . This was a second visit for me and a destination restaurant that I was looking forward to returning to. See, the last time I ate there, I was only a budding f
The impressive reputation of "London's Oldest Restaurant" brings with it a certain level of expectation and cachet...The menu is understandably very traditional and very British. You're never going to come here looking for culinary wizardry or foams, savoury snows and anything sous vide. A starter of smoked duck salad with stilton was good but largely down to the quality of the ingredients rather than any level of culinary expertise.
So, back in May when we still thought 23 degrees was "hot", Mama and Papa Diva came to visit me in London. Having moved to the other side of the world, forcing them to fly wedged in a plane for 24 hours all the way from Australia to visit me now and then,
But first, Rules. Trying to move with the times while reflecting is weighty history, Rules , the oldest restaurant in London, is still rife with a charming English atmosphere reminiscent of a fine Parisian bistro; waiters dressed in bow ties and armed wit
If my dad cannot get a table at Rules when he plans to visit me, he will postpone his visit. FACT. But who's complaining?! - this restaurant really has learnt from its 200+ years of experience.
I did however read one review stating that they was glad that the waitress left the jug of water on the table because they never offered to refill once during their two hour stay. Well that reviewer must have had a massive tattoo branded across their forehead saying 'DO NOT POUR MY WATER' because during my visit on Sunday I must have been offered 10 gallons worth of refills, and accompanied by a jug of lime cordial as well (which they had remembered from my previous visit... over a year ago!). Anyway the roast is sheer perfection - I only wish I would one day have the opportunity to try one of the other meats, without any of my family threatening to disown me (you share your beef portion, so you have to comply with your buddy if dining in even numbers). The sticky toffee pud may look teeny tiny but trust me, after all that beef (and water refills) you will not have space for even a morsel more of food (apart from the chocolate limes at the reception!)
Very classy establishment. One of London's finest restaurants with plenty of history. Perfect for a special occasion or a one off treat. Mainly because dinner for two came to around £85 which is not something i'd like to make a regular occurrence. For the main course I had rabbit with some deliciously creamy mash. Simple, but effective. Very enjoyable meal, classy atmosphere which inspires a feel good attitude, so overall would recommend this for special occasions.
I must admit I didn't know what to expect when we initially booked this iconic bastion of Great British food but have no worries Rules is fab. The decor is an intriguing mix of classical, radical and downright bizarre but the staff are welcoming and the atmosphere relaxed and informal. The menu is extremely well balanced from fresh salads and fish starters through weighty meat main-courses to a mixture of classic desserts and puddings. I had the pea and ham salad whilst my partner went for cured duck breast with a Stilton dressing. Nice portion size and very very tasty. My fillet of beef main course was similarly well seasoned and perfectly cooked as was the loin of lamb. We shared a salad and a portion of minted new potatoes and definitely felt like we'd had a proper main course by the end. The lemon polenta cake and my golden syrup pudding with custard finished off what was a very enjoyable, relaxing and not overly fussy couple of hours. The really friendly staff who didn't hang on your every word but always seemed to be around when a glass needed filling were great and the wine, from their extensive selection fit the bill perfectly. Expensive? Well... Maybe, but worth every penny as a great experience of proven, beyond and above what might be seen as fashionable, great British dining. Their forte is surely their game - but everything I saw coming out of their kitchen from the fish, to the pies to their Yorkshire puddings looked like they have been there for over 200 years because they know a thing or two about what works and what value for money means. Will certainly go back.
Fantastic Rib of Beef, and the followed by awesome Stilton!
Location: Rules location is ideal, situated near Covent Garden, making it a convenient choice for those exploring the area.
Food: If you're looking for traditional English dishes, this place is a must-visit. I highly recommend trying the roast rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding.
Ambiance: Dining at this restaurant feels like stepping back in time. It holds the distinction of being the oldest restaurant in London, and the rich history is palpable in its ambiance. The decor and atmosphere are steeped in tradition, creating a unique and cozy setting for a meal.
Overall, this restaurant is a perfect choice for guests who appreciate historic dining establishments. It offers a taste of traditional English cuisine in a venue that exudes history and charm.
Had a wonderful lunch here and had the Chicken Pie with a side of mash and also the Rules cocktail, maybe the best pie I've had in London. Service and attention was amazing, everyone was very friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend for a special occasion or a spoil yourself outing.
Simply the best London can offer. Staff are ever so accommodating and professional. Never be afraid this place is too fancy, the staff will put you at ease. And yes, you step back in time, in a sumptuous setting. I choose something different to eat each visit and have always been delighted. Oh! Also, the cocktail bar upstairs is a very nice way to begin your sitting. You are never rushed, but I wish time would slow upon entry. Somewhere I'd really recommend as a must visit! And the bill is comparatively reasonably priced, if you keep to one bottle of wine :)
Over the years the charm still exists and the staff still top notch.
My first game season visit and I'd recommend a visit.
Love the corridors filled with the restaurants history and the decor of old English. London's oldest restaurant and still going strong .

If you want to know what is traditional English food you are welcome to come in for the dinner or lunch. Delicious food, outstanding service, staff attentive to all small details, exquisite table setting and endless wine list. All these you can find in The Rules, which was established in 1798. In October they serve game and we will
definitely get back to you to try it. Definitely place to be when you are in London.
The oldest restaurant in London. Beautiful atmosphere. Excellent food and if you are lucky you have the Hungarian lady for your service…which makes everything perfect.
It truly is an enchanting English experience. The staff were friendly, food was served in the perfect timing, prepared with great ingredients making it heavenly! I could definitely feel like this is the oldest restaurant in London through the ambience.
Our favorite restaurant in the world. Food is always stellar and the service is second to none. Tried and true for both. The menu changes frequently enough to always be exciting.
The staff are so nice. Highly recommend arriving early to your reservation to get some drinks in the conversatory. Wouldn't recommend the sticky toffee pudding (it wasn't mad but for a one time expensive meal I'd say go for something else). Overall, well worth a meal there
At least once in your lire you have to try here.
Tradizionale british food in a traditional atmosphere. The 《 steak and kidney pie》tastes perfect to a foreign.
Beer is served very well. Do not forget potatoes 《dauphinois》.
Come and try.
The vibe, staff, and atmosphere are great. The food is tricky to select a good one. I got a stake and kidney pie. It was like a smoked brisket you may have in Texas. However, it was not smoked. It had some mushrooms and kidney slices. It was delicious.
Had a very friendly drink at the bar while I waited for my table to be ready. The Gin & That cocktail was delicious.
Dinner on the ground floor was much more structured, but the service and advice was impeccable.
Decor is very busy, and distracting from the elegance of the experience.
Very yummy! Caesar took care of us and was a delight. They were very accommodating with my husband's food allergies. Highly recommend stopping by, especially if you are from the US!
Stunning service, delicious food. So much flavour. We were in heaven.
Yes, it’s pricey but it is totally worth it.
One not to miss.
A must-experience in my book, I loved it, service was impeccable as was the food. Excellent cocktail selection, bartender was very helpful in adjusting/selecting my cocktail as well.
Sat down at 16.00 hrs as had a show booked for 19.30. I had the place, and it was amazing. The wife had the scallops, and again, fantastic the staff were there when needed think we might have to go back and work our way through the menu, many thanks to all at Rules.
A very lovely, unique restaurant. Not as stuffy as you might imagine for such a smart place. The service was beautifully old-fashioned.
I went for a solo lunch because I fancied a steak and kidney pudding. They squeezed me despite being fully booked online and from that moment I was very well looked after.
Cocktails are pricey but impeccably made. House Red was very nice and reasonably priced. The S&K pudding was exactly what I wanted - it was gorgeous and plentiful and hard to finish. It’s well-priced at £22.50 but doesn’t come with veg so that’ll set you back an extra £5.50.
Do visit. Don’t be put off by the grand look or the prices. You can luncheon here without breaking the bank (if you avoid the cocktails). Do visit the bar and ‘winter garden’ upstairs - both wonderful.
Put your phone away and allow yourself to be pampered for a couple of hours. You won’t be disappointed.
