L and I were headed to Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park this Friday night to watch Lift Festival’s Depart – an interactive circus performance through the underworld. Not knowing what to expect, we decided to hedge our bets and satisfy our stomachs with a good meal first. And so we kicked off the weekend at nearby Verdi’s Italian restaurant (as it turned out, Depart was brilliant and utterly mesmerising – it’s returning in 2017 so do see it if you can).
I don't know East London well, but Verdi's was well worth the trip. Spoilt for choice by the mains menu. I had grilled swordfish in a tomato sauce for mine. Delicious & the largest swordfish I've ever had - tasted very fresh. For starters I went for their small portion of tagliatelle bolognese - I was worried it might be too filling for a starter, but exactly right. The pasta was fresh, if a touch on the al dente side, but a really great dish. My friends also enjoyed scallops with samphire to start and another had calamari and courgette frite - an enormous deep fried dish. For main courses they had specials of fillet beef with mushroom sauce and spring onion and another had oven baked sea bass. The roast potatoes side is worth ordering and sharing between two - they are more baked little potatoes with skin on rather than traditional British roasties. For wine we enjoyed the Pinot Grigio, which slipped down nicely. We also tried their Rose special of the day, but I found this a bit corky/oaky. We would have liked more choice for desserts I.e some less creamy things too, as one of my friends had to pass on dessert for this reason. But I had a perfectly good chocolate mouse served in a glass ice cream type dish with raspberry coulis on top and another friend the classic tiramisu served in the same type of dish as the mousse. The service was very friendly and attentive, although there was one comedy moment when they tried to give me my friend's beef (covered in sauce) twice and said it was my swordfish! But no problem. Free limoncellos were also served to us at the end of the meal. Those living nearby are so lucky to have this as a local restaurant - where you can either go all out as we did with three courses and the more expensive fish and meat dishes, or go for some very reasonably priced and satisfying pizza and pasta meals for less than £20 with wine, depending on your mood or budget. I would certainly be popping in for their tagliatelle bolognese on a regular basis at less than £10 as a main course if I were local.
Stepney is not exactly over-endowed with restaurants, so Verdi's is a great find, although it would be a welcome addition to any neighbourhood! The food is regional Italian, and offers a relatively small menu of imaginative dishes, excellently cooked. On recent visits braised rabbit, pappardelle with lamb shank ragu, chicken in sage and white wine sauce, and fritto misto have all gone down well, and there are good pizzas as well. The atmosphere is pleasantly informal, with quiet jazz in the background. Friendly service too. Well worth a visit.
Amongst a myriad of Fried Chicken Restaurants, Fast Food Joints and numerous Bangladeshi restaurants sits a quaint Italian restaurant with a distinguished setting. Walking in on a Wednesday afternoon for Lunch I was surprised to see a style that resembles that of a high class restaurant. The restaurant was relatively full for a Wednesday afternoon in Mile end.
The menu consisted of a few dishes in different categories that one would see in any Italian restaurants however with a higher complication. The waiter arrived to explain the daily specials which included Burrata with black truffles shavings on top and spaghetti with truffles both for reasonable prices. My friend ordered a margherita Pizza that arrived with basil and parmesan cheese on the side. The Pizza was thin crispy crust with a tasty tomato sauce, a simple dish but prepared to a very high standard. I ordered the Rabbit Ragout which was also very tasty and the pasta came al dente, I also ordered burrata with black truffles, both were very delicious.
There was a generally formal setting with a dedicated wine menu. The waiter explained to me that the restaurant had only been open for two months.
This restaurant can be seen as a hidden gem in Mile end and is definitely recommended to anyone who appreciates good hearty Italian food. The prices may be slightly high compared to the surrounding restaurants but for the quality of the food and the ingredients it is definitely worth a trip and the money.
it's a great little neighbourhood Italian full of tasty food. went there several times, for pizza and for main dishes. I have to say, while the pizza is quite good, the star are the dishes, in particular the specials. the arancini is great, the pasta is cooked beautifully and with great sauces. definitely recommend the trip here
Took my mother for an evening meal. According to her the following are excellent (I agree): ambience, furniture, service, food, wine, choice of background music, the peace, folded toilet paper, proximity to her house!
An Italian gem with amazing authentic food, great service, prices and friendly staff. Been a favourite spot since the first visit.
First time I have eaten here and I was delighted with the surroundings the service........and the food was superb......it's all prepared and cooked on the premises.....I will be going again soon.
Thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at this restaurant. I devoured the delicious and freshly cooked pasta with potatoes on the side followed by a scrumptious yet light dessert tart. The waiters were very attentive and polite. I would definitely come here again and highly recommend to anyone interested in an authentic Italian dining exeperience!!
My partner and I have been going here since it opened. Classic Italian restaurant, serving traditional food, with a family run feel, great ambience. Owner and her sister are both lovely and very welcoming. Food is consistently good. Wine menu is good, with something for every pocket, Barolo very reasonably priced. An oasis amongst the fried chicken take aways that litter this pocket of East London. This place could be put anywhere in London and it would deserve the rating.
Love, love, love this place! We visit Italy at least twice a year and Verdi's provides truly authentic Italian food. The pasta is especially delicious but everything is worth a try. Wine reasonable for the quality and service super friendly. Best restaurant in the area and deserves to be full every night.
I do live in Rome most of the year and am accustomed to proper Naples pizza, I'd say. Definitely can recommend this place if you want to get close to the taste of the original. Staff is very friendly, atmosphere is nice, very clean set-up.
Great restaurant - looks quite fancy but actual prices are very reasonable and the food is to die for. Service was very very fast and good and the drinks were cheap and strong. Only thing to note - the bread and olives cost you a £1 a person and don't get filled up so if you do get them I would ask for a top up off them. Definitely going back and already know what I am ordering!
This was our third visit to Verdi's in the last month and each and every time we have a fantastic evening. Food is excellent and authentic Italian and the staff and service is great. Highly recommended and I will be going again next week! The rabbit and pancetta papardelle is some of the best pasta I've ever had.
One of the best options for eating out in Mile End - usually well executed, although somewhat inconsistent Italian fare - hence only the 4 stars. It’s probably safest to stick to their main menu items (their seafood pasta special was one of the worst Italian dishes I have ever been served in London). Pizzas don’t disappoint and the burrata starter and the rabbit tagliatelle are good.
Superb little restaurant gem in Stepney Green that I frequent with my partner on a regular basis.
Was gutted that the torta fritta and wild boar parpadelle weren't on the menu last time I went, but to the restaurant's credit, their menu has never disappointed. The recent addition of a proper pizza oven has meant I've consumed my own body weight in a particularly brilliant calzone which is somewhat bigger than my head, and a delicious spicy number, I believe is Diavola. Highly recommend the burrata and the organic white wine as well. If you skip over the tiramisu, you'll regret it.
Shame we didn't get to catch up with Anne last time, but still the service was attentive and as good as always. Pay it a visit, it's awesome
Authentic and delicious Italian food - some of the best I’ve had in London. Would especially recommend the pasta dishes, really good quality fresh pasta! Very friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices. Can’t wait to go back!
Absolutely amazing! Comfy environment, friendly staff and the best pizza in London! We went to speak with the pizzaiolo Andrea, the man behind this amazing pizza, and he was so welcoming and really humble about his work that bacame one of the reasons we go there every week :) Very recommend!
A very nice traditional Italian restaurant that feels modern without being trendy. Food is good, and service polite and understated. Nice mix of customers, some locals, some from the University, some tourists and passers-by.
Great place, really nice people working there. They apologized for being late with my take away pizzas and gave me free drinks...and I only had to wait 15 minutes!! Pizza was very good, also. Vegan and vegetarian options, gluten free...
