Amazing view, great steak, best wines..... ask for the owner Neleen! Wines from South Africa and many others. A must when you visit London for great food and a view of the Thames
I love it when I discover somewhere new to eat in The City. I recently went to High Timber for lunch and although not a new restaurant, I had never made the short walk from my office to this riverside spot. I’ve worked in this part of London for over 6 years now and it’s a strange place when it comes to dining. There are very few individual restaurants and not many great meals on offer, oh and a lot of steak! Spoiler: there is steak on this menu but firstly its good and secondly there is a lot of other choice too!
An invitation to review High Timber coincided with spotting my friend Jeanne from Cooksister instagramming from there. What better endorsement – I was super-keen to accept based on her obvious enthusiasm. I didn’t realise was that she’s something of a regular and a personal friend of Neleen, the very charming, convivial manger there. But, that wouldn’t have discouraged me a jot. Just along the river from the ‘Wobbly Bridge’, High Timber enjoys some spectacular views yet is set away from the hubbub of the City and offers the opportunity to enjoy some of the finest wines from South Africa with an excellent and well priced food offering.
Peter Morrell enjoys a wealth of warm South African hospitality in one of London’s best located restaurants. High Timber Terrace View. High Timber Interior. PausePlayPlayPrev|Next. Walk north across the Millennium Bridge, turn right and after about five minutes the Thames path is diverted around the now disused Queenhithe Dock. Ignore the diversion and after a few steps you arrive at the South African restaurant, High Timber.
I do love it when a good plan comes together. A last-minute restaurant booking, sun, outdoor seating, river views, terrific service, delicious wines and serious steak. It’s not easy to have all of those boxes ticked under one roof either, but someones got to have them and that someone is High Timber. A tempting South African restaurant in the City of London, looking over the River Thames and Millennium Bridge, with standing room for drinks in the sun and a few seats with views across the London skyline. It’s very hidden too, which makes this place even more of a hidden gem.
Best steak in London. Relaxed atmosphere and excellent service. The view is incredible and very reasonable priced for the quality of food. Don't forget to visit the winecellar for a wide variety of international wines.
Good Addition to London City Dining Scene. Wonderful new addition to the City's restaurant scene. Simple, modern & elegant menu; superbly executed dishes with lots of flavour & lovely presentation. The service achieves just the right balance between informality and professionalism. The location affords wonderful views of the South Bank & Millennium Bridge. The nearly 40,000 wine cellar is particularly strong in South Africa & has some good international choices. Great balance all around!
The restaurant is the result of a partnership between South African wine producer Jordan Wine Estate and Neleen Strauss of renowned City restaurant Vivat Bacchus. Situated overlooking the Thames, the restaurant provides a suitably light and relaxed enviro
Everything was 5 star. The ambiance, service and food were outstanding. The manager let my wife try a few wines before she decided what to order. The place is expensive (£70 each) but worth it. I included a pic of our Pancetta desert.
Simply superior service and hospitality! Recently visited HT while on work in London with some friends and clients. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like family and the food only made things better. The owner personally showed us to the wine cellar and assisted with some great recommendations. As for the steaks, I would put them on par with any world class steak house! The dessert was also excellent. We will return!
I love this place! My family and I ate there 3-4 times while on holiday in London. We tried the ribeye, burger, corn ribs, malva pudding - everything was delicious. I was touched by the warm hospitality too. The owner genuinely cares about her customers and each time we visited High Timber, she made a sincere effort to make sure our meal was special. Once in particular she kindly accommodated us at great inconvenience to her team. We will never forget our experiences at High Timber! When in London we will definitely make a point to return. I recommend you try this place for delicious South African cuisine, excellent wine, and friendly hospitality.
I usually don’t go to steak restaurants in London as they usually disappoint me. This one however, I really liked. Prime steak was so soft and juicy. Service was excellent. Would go back again!
A lovely meal at High Timer where the food is excellent. Personally I had the cod which was very tasty but most in our party had steak which I was told was delicious. We dined outside on a glorious summers evening and watched the full moon pass the Shard. Starters was smoked salmon and the desert was a superb malva pudding. There is a wide choice of food to suit your taste but if you prefer the taste of South Africa you will not be disappointed. The wine cellar has a large selection of wines and the ambience of the restaurant is subtle African. A very nice night out in the heart of the city with superb views along the Thames.
The atmosphere and the team were amazing. The food was delicious except boys weren't impressed with their steaks. Overall, it was nice. The razor class and grilled asparagus were great.
I went with a friend. We both had steak and loved it, cooked to perfection. The service was excellent, friendly and efficient but not intrusive. Great view from the restaurant. I will go again
A slightly limited (covid time) menu, but everything we ordered was great. The Biltong croquettes were lovely and the steak (in this picture a 250g rib eye) meat was tender and juicy and has a lot of flavour.
Could do better on the dessert options though, and not sure how I feel about paying £6.90 for a sorbet.
In the whole the experience and food was very good, staff were friendly and professional, and I would definitely recommend and go again myself.
Stunning food with stunning wine and stunning views! One of my favourite restaurants and can't recommend highly enough. Try a wine tasting dinner if you can, always fun and excellent value for money.
Fabolous late lunch great flavours, Lovely staff and great views !!! We really enjoyed our time here and will definitely come back!
Had several superb meals at High Timber over the last two weeks. Wonderfully looked after by Neleen and the team. Great steaks, great wine and a great view across to the Globe and Tate Modern!
Really nice South African restaurant - the wine selection was good and the steak was cooked perfectly - I didn’t like the way the chips were cooked but it is just my opinion - Friendly and helpful staff
Really great food with decent portions. Really good atmosphere with helpful staff ensuring your visit is good.
Definitely on the more expensive side, a starter, mains, a glass of wine and a double rum voting me £100 but totally worth the cost.
Nice view on the skyline, friendly and extremely polite staff, good Illy espresso (really, a surprise). Prices bit expensive, but ingredients quality is indisputable and the chef knows how to season properly, even in case of simple-but-risky dishes like asparagus with bacon and smoked cheese or the grilled octopus with slices of sausage. Interesting choice of South African wines, ça va sans dire.
Awesome steaks and lovely staff. The chef had gone home and the restaurant staff went into the kitchen and made dessert for us.
A great meal with a welcoming staff.
