Notting Hill, once upon a time rural and home to potteries and pig farms, was developed in the early 19th century to offer smart housing, in stucco fronted villas around garden squares, to London’s well-to-do middle class. 100 years later, when WW1 changed the social structure and residents employed fewer servants, the area slid increasingly further down the social scale. The large houses were divided up into bedsits which offered cheap housing to immigrants from Ireland and the West Indies and, in time, it became a run down and even dodgy area. Around the 1980s, the heyday of the yuppies, it gradually metamorphosed into a place for those who enjoyed the edgy, colourful vibe, mainly artists and young people on the up, to buy then still affordable property. They refurbished the houses, opened cafes and shops, and the rest, as they say, is history. These days it is the home to the Camerons, the Beckhams, to models and celebrities, and the area has decidedly gone up in the world, now sporting the reputation of being super cool with real estate prices to match.
I heard that Clarke’s was an outpost of the gentrified, so I couldn’t resist a visit after my trip to Paris to check if cultured people in white table cloth restaurants in England acted the same. Hence, my visit to this institution. Clarke’s, apparently known for its agreeable food, and smooth and sublime service. No expectations there of course. I try to enter restaurants without too much baggage. It generally gets too heavy to carry, or stuck in the door or is otherwise hard to fit under the table. As I learnt through unfortunate experience, you should only go through life with carry on sized luggage.
No telling what you will get on the night as the menu changes by the day, though the menu online will give you a general idea what to expect.
We came here based on an article in the paper when Sally Clarkes new book came out late last year. Reading the description in the article we thought it sounded to good to pass up.
We had a very enjoyable evening here. The decor and setup is a relaxed, cosy front room feel to it. The service is attentive without being too much.
The meal start off okay and definitely got better . The crab ravioli was nice but initially left us wondering if it had been more hype about the place.
That was put to rest with the main. Excellent mains, no hype here , all substance. Both the turbot and the calf's liver were filling, full of flavour and left us saying we d have more.
Desert and the cheese selection continued with holding the standard.
I'd happily go back again and again. You can see why there were so many regulars there.
£160 for two, 3 courses each, glass of white, half bottle of red and a port.
...a great little restaurant that fully deserves all the plaudits it regularly receives.
Clarke's makes for an ideal last night in London. This cozy nook of elegant flavors, nestled in the streets of South Kensington just across from Kensington Place, surprises you with tastes and ingredients you neve
Fantastic quality, seasonal British dishes. For example, Cornish monkfish tail grilled with Nicoise olive tapenade, Swiss chard, heritage beetroot and grilled purple artichoke. Lovely dining room - great for family occasions. Deli next door also sells delicious pork pies, cakes, olive oils and jams
It has been a few years, but I fondly think back to when my husband and I ate here. We received a warm welcome as soon as we walked in and the food was absolutely delicious. We would both gladly come back when we find ourselves in London again.
Fantastic spot near Kensington Palace. A British friend took us and the food was spectacular as was the service. Also loved the fact that there were only a few tables in the room where we dined which made it easy to hear each other. And because we were the only Americans there, we were probably the loudest table. Anyway, loved it!
I organised a dinner in their private room for 21 people. The whole experience was first rate. Planning straightforward, food was exceptional, service immaculate and friendly. The whole team made it a memorable occasion and whilst not cheap very good value all around. Totally recommend
Busy restaurant working as dinning for the wealthy and rich in London, the service was slow but good on the end. Dinner well above £100 per person so considering the plates is not great value however the quality of food was not bad, cheese selection bit disappointing for the postcode also have better coffee as luck of crema and lukewarm once on table.
Beautiful restaurant, amazing food and wonderful staff. We were very late, but never rushed once. Highly recommend!
I recently dined at Clarke's and it was quite the treat! The food was excellent, well portioned, and bursting with flavour. They have a daily changing menu which adds a touch of excitement to each visit. The service was impeccable and the staff were a real highlight - warm, welcoming, and with a good sense of humour.
You'd expect a 'white-tablecloth' restaurant to be stiff, outdated, and dull, but Clarke's is quite the opposite. It has a lively atmosphere and I left feeling satisfied in every sense. This restaurant is definitely one of my new favourites.
Fantastic! Amazing ingredients, lively atmosphere, great wines, staff totally professional, it's everything dining out should be.
At long last we've returned to one of our favourite London spots. Although Sally is no longer in the kitchen, the standard of cooking remains at the highest level. We were greeted warmly by her and had a chuckle about Lago Blue. There was something on the menu for everyone. Freshest ingredients available. Sally's lunch menu was a super bargain (but one we resisted in favour of an a la carte selection). Impeccable service.
My partner and I left London in 2006. We were used to going to dinner at Clark's very often. So after more than 15 years we went back, and what a pleasure to see that everything was perfect as before, the cuisine, the decoration and the staff. And cherry on the cake, one of the managers was still there, i was so happy to see him again.
I really recommend !
Fantastic duck leg, so crispy and juicy
Take the Lemon tart, so tasty
Sally's kindness makes you feel at home
