Excellent cafe where you can satisfy your cravings for reasonable prices, optimal hygienic conditions and with a really friendly and professional staff as well. Very cute cafe.
Quality cafe with fine and detail-oriented interiors. Service staff were warm and attentive. Coffee was really good, iced mocha hit the spot. Cakes we tried here were amazing too. Take note that they are now fully cashless so only cards or contactless payments are accepted. Recommended!

The thought of being in public toilets, being surrounded by filth and grim may make you run miles away. But, there’s a particular spot in central London where the former public toilet has turned into the flagship store for The Attendant. It’s the place to go for Australian brunches, healthy salads, sandwiches and delicious coffee. In Australia people are big coffee drinkers the Attendant coffee doesn’t mess around it is simply top notch. Every sip you can smell the roasted beans aroma and strong delicious taste of the green beans.

We absolutely loved this cafe when we visited in August 2016.
Such a quirky space! Adds to the charm.
Super impressed with the food and coffee. Food was fresh, generous and really tasty and the coffee was fab.
My god has London coffee improved since I lived in the UK in 2005/6! This spot is fantastic and would put up a good fight to a lot of Sydney’s cafes.
Definitely worth stopping by, or sourcing out as we did on our travels.
Delish!
Was intrigued by the toilet turned coffee shop set up that they have. Pretty quirky place. Their coffee is nice and strong and a treat for coffee fans. The place is a bit small. Expect to order, click a few pictures for the gram and leave.
A very funky cafe located underground with a cozy and relaxed vibe, perfect for a spot of lunch or a coffee away from the hustle and bustle.
We only stopped for coffee but the lunch display and menu looked very appealing with colourful salads, quiches and sandwiches on offer.
The coffee menu featured all the classics plus a few unique options such as the gingerbread latte which looked too good to pass on. It was so good in fact that we got an iced one to take away !
Would definitely recommend this little cafe for a cozy, relaxing lunch spot with its friendly staff and interesting menu.
My partner and I were in London for 5 nights in April. It was our first time there and being from Melbourne, we are both unavoidably fussy about our coffee.
This place is wonderfully quirky and interesting while serving the best coffee (from what we tried) in the area.
Given the size of the cafe, there isn't a huge range of food options. That being said, what we did try (the brownie was a favourite of my partners) was really really good. On our second last day we had breakfast there and I had the porridge that I had been craving since leaving home. Now I know porridge is porridge, but oh my goodness, it has been over a month and I would do many things for another bowl!
Love yourself and give this place a go if you are ever in the area.
A Victorian toilet converted into a cafe. What a cool idea. Just went to catch up for a coffee, flat white is good. A small warm place I must say. Loved the overall feel of it. Must try for all coffee lovers 😊☕️💚
Really quirky place in Fitzrovia. Built inside what used to be urinals. Sounds disgusting yes. But the aero press was one of the best I have ever had. A bit tight on space but the coffee and service are top notch.

I feel paradoxes, due the fact of organic use of raw material preparing coffee or sandwich es great cookies, more higher is the brownie, my request is once in lifetime meal at ATTENDANT, feel cozy with their ambience.. personal touch, envy people lucky who can visit every breakfast and lunch.. blessed, great way of creating an entrance
Love the location which is exquisite. Boutique coffee shop serving cold brew and filter. Cappuccino is wonderful. Definitely the milk chosen for coffee is one of the best.
Walk down Foley Street in Fitzroy and you’ll stumble across what was once a Victorian era gentleman’s toilet but today houses The Attendant. For 50 years the space lay dormant until it was resurrected and repurposed as a cafe by owners Bosh McKeown and Ryan De Oliveira in 2013.
The Attendant is situated downstairs of what used to be the toilets for gentlemen back in the Victorian times. It took two years to plan, restore and clean the old toilets of course, and transformed it to an unique underground coffee shop. You might have walked passed it thinking the entrance is like any other underground station, however upon walking down, you will find the original urinals used as the coffee tables. A well known unique coffee shop in London.
One of the top coffee spots in Fitzrovia for sure. Beautifully made by their barista, the almond latte will not disappoint those who are into coffee. Awesome snacks on display (only one or two healthy/vegan ones though), and yummy simple food for lunch. Good wifi and chilled vibe, highly recommended for coffee lovers.
When you are told you are going to a toilet to eat on Valentine’s Day- you cannot help but be a little skeptical! We accidentally walked past the Attendant café because we were too busy nattering away.. But in my head I was thinking how this looks like a unique little café. I was delighted when my boyfriend turned me around and said oops- this is the place! The instagramming quickly began!
A cute cafe at a previous toilet. The food was nothing special, the museli-like yoghurt thing tasted quite terrible. I like the fresh orange juice there though.
Last weekend I had a coffee at The Attendant in Fitzrovia. Nothing blogworthy, if it wasn't for the fact that the Attendant is housed in a former underground urinal. Since the loo is more likely to be the place where I find myself after having a few drinks to many, I never ever thought I'd be having a cuppa coffee straddling a gents' urinal bowl.
Love the Attendant. Nice team of people running a cafe in a former Victorian loo. Brilliant idea and their flat whites are memorable just as much as the location! Thumbs up definitely!
Have they removed the piss stains? Have they scrubbed the place down well? Can you really, truly remove all the loo bacteria? These are thoughts that will enter your mind as you descend the steps to Attendant. Yes, it is a former public toilet, but it's also an excellent cafe. The flat white is a tad too strong, the brownies a bit too sweet, but overall it's a unique place worth a visit.
Such a great idea. The Attendant is housed in an old Victorian public convenience. It's tiny, and you may think sitting over an 'upcycled' urinal is a little bizarre, but hey, why not?
You'll spot the awnings from down the street, 'The Attendant' sign as you near. The only giveaway bring a blackboard sign making a witty joke about how much you really need coffee.
Take a short flight of steps down and you're instantly transported to another, different world. It reminds me of the toilets into the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter, except there's steps and no flushing yourself.
The Attendant has been laying dormant in Fitzrovia since it was mothballed in the 60s. But now, it has been completely renovated, keeping original features, and provides a great brew.
Pop in, even if for a few photos. Or take a seat at a urinal and enjoy!
How curious that we are so happy to sip lattes and munch pastries in a former den of bodily functions and knee-tremblers. London after all does reinvention better than that desperate bag of bones Madonna, perhaps why she persists in darkening our door...
Would you have a coffee in a public toilet? The answer for Londoners is yes. The Attendant is an irreverent berlin style 1899 Victorian conversion men loo into a coffee house
When I first started this blog back in 2009 one of the main reasons was to highlight the growing London coffee scene - I would faithfully visit every new cafe and write it up. Then as the cafes started opening thick and fast, I realised that I was falling behind - my Central London Coffee Survival Guide Map was actually looking a bit out of date. Eek! Anyway - I am determined to set that right, fill in the gaps over the coming months but also make sure to alert all my fellow caffeine-addicts to new openings. Attendant in Foley St is a great example of the latter. Cleverly taking an abandoned old Victorian public lav (I am a big fan of old fashioned public loos - not in a cottaging/Joe Orton sort of way but because they are often really beautiful, with amazing tiling and huge old porcelain fittings. For fellow toilet enthusiasts, check out this blog and pay a visit to the loos at RIBA .) the Attendant crew have turned this space into a really lovely cafe. There is a dinky littl
One of my almond milk latte stops for the piece I recently wrote for About Time Magazine, Attendant definitely made my top 5, with its awesome interiors (it used to be an underground men's toilet!), fabulous service, damn good coffee, and excellent sandwiches and cakes. Yeah, it's virtually perfect, but you'll have to get there early to get a stall. I mean, a seat.
I went there with a couple of friends to enjoy one rainy afternoon, and the place screams two words.. Originality and Coziness. I liked my experience there, which was quite unique. Coffee was perfectly made and well filtered. Enough strong. I tried also a few sips of their teas from my friends, which had one flavored of peppermint, and I have to say it was very refreshing. This place is definitely worth a try.
Also, their originality comes from the fact that the location used was before one of the oldest public toilets in London, which seems weird to think about... but gives the place a fun atmosphere. Prices are fine and completely affordable.
What: The Attendent
Where: Goodge St
Value: £6pp
Food Review: The coffee is simply yet perfrectly made and tge perfext rrmedy for a cold dreary afternoon. To add the personal touch, it is topped with a pretty pattern and also a substitution for almond milk. The gooey chocolatly brownie has just been baked so its breakable texture is hard to pick up but it was emtremly indulgent and boardaline sickly, so proberbly recommended for sharing.
Settings Review: Upon entrance from the street is a gated area around a staircase, leading into a dark pit. Once entering you see the dark pit is actually lit up and is a charming but rustic cellar. The first thing you see is a quirky bar with various knink knacs surrounding the walls such as a graffitti board. Originally a toilet, it has kept some of its original features such as handriers and cubicle style seating.
Positives: nice coffee, indulgent chocolate brownie
Negatives: small, not a lot of space
3 words: unusual, quirky, independent
Really weird location for a coffee ( old street public loo) , but really nice and different.
Is a place for a good caffe but without choose the usual chain and where you can have a good choose of sweets from cake to cookies...
You should try
Whilst nattering over a cup of coffee with Brian of Brian's Coffee Spot back in the autumn, he kindly came to share some of his favourite gaffs within the city of London and so it is that I have slowly been ticking them off my list.
Possibly the capital's quirkiest caffeine-hit, Attendant is located below street level in what used to be a Victorian Public Toilet.
Yes, I know. How curious indeed but how very unique - you'd be hard pressed to find another place quite like it.
Suitably combining its awesome ornate charm with modern touches, it makes the perfect subterranean hideaway from the busy surrounding area of Central London (if you can get past the fact that it used to be a gent's bog).
It's small, intimate and beautifully lit, making a great backdrop to a coffee (or cold brew) with a friend.
My pal Myles and I were thrilled with all the finer details, as music played softly in the background blending with the natter of conversations - this place seats only a handful of people and looking around, I could envisage it being ideal for a small meeting.
Such underworld exclusivity is well worth a visit next time you're central, especially if you're looking for something a little more clandestine than your local Starbucks.
So just who will you be taking to Attendant, and why?
The Vibe
Dating in public toilets is on the rise. If wanting to avoid any ‘lewd conduct’ allegations, there are a handful of London joints (from Cellar Door to Ginglik) that retain some of their previous toilet charm but now serve booze, food and/or coffee. The Attendant is one of the newer, and smaller, ex-urinals on the scene. Open during the day till 6pm, this is a minimalist coffee shop that serves the usual lunch sandwiches and cold cuts, sweet treats and quality doses of caffeine in lovely porcelain cups. It’s good for dates for a number of reasons. One, it’s a novelty. Two, it’s in Soho and therefore perfect for a 45 minute power date with someone you met on Tinder. Three, unlike other coffee joints the staff are unpretentious and warm. And four, it’s a tiny room so they can’t walk in, spot you and turn around – clocked.
The Order
There’s no decaf served here, punchy. Go for a cup of Caravan-made coffee, strong, yummy and sustainable (thank God). Pair with some milk from a fancy Somerset farm where the cows have been treated like kings. If starving, go for a goat’s cheese and veg sandwich. But it’s much more continental to just stick to liquids on this date.
The Game
Don’t bother perching at the urinals; they’re cool to look at but better for a pit stop or speedy wifi session. Instead move to the back of the room to the communal table, ask politely to join whoever is there and offer your date the seat that borders on you and air, take the random neighbour for yourself. Talk purely about substantial things – a recent play, a short story you just read. Keep it under an hour and once you’ve both proven yourselves to be intelligent beings, leave as it closes and head to the nearest bar for the silly fun.
The Faults
Some might consider dating by a urinal a tad off-putting.
Sex Factor
1. It’s coffee, it’s quick and it’s too intimate a place to flirt outrageously in.
Overall is good. Salt beef bagel is pretty good! It’s so tender and meaty! Latte is also good, it is more roasting scent with stronger flavour.
There are not many seats so it may need to queue a little bit.
Friendly service as well, if you wanna have special experience, you can visit here.
This coffee shop has its appeal and charm, that's for sure. Food was good and the service, excellent. Loved it. I'm definitely coming back. Best times: right after opening or before closing time. Otherwise you'll have to wait in line.
Great quirky little coffee shop!
Definitely geeked out on how they managed to restore and convert this Victorian public restroom into a coffee bar.
They offered a wide array of food and drink choices. Always going to be a lover of their fresh mint tea! Definitely going to frequent this café if I am around the neighbourhood.
The staff were so lovely and the premises were kept tidy and clean. Great location and easy to spot too!
My friends and I went right after open in order to snag some seating for breakfast. I had a bacon roll with brown sauce and a mocha that was excellent. Having breakfast and coffee in a victorian toilet was pretty interesting and something I don't think I will soon forget. The staff was great and the service was speedy.
I love this place. The setting is unique, but it's not a gimmick. The quality of the coffee is truly excellent. And the staff is lovely. Roman will explain all kinds of things to you about their coffee if you listen. Well worth a visit!
What fantastic, quirky hidden gem in Central London. You have to go, for the experience and the coffee. We didn't eat, but did see the food other customers received and it looks amazing. The coffee was one if the best cups of coffee I have drunk in a while and the prices won't break the bank. It's definitely somewhere we will visit again and again when in London.
Definitely Recommend.
It’s an experience - the interior is so cool, the coffee is super tasty and the croissants are a must.
We got the croissant with tomatoes and cheese and added avocado (for me) and bacon (my friend) - see the pics.
Such a great place and so unusual too.
A must-see.
Really cool spot (small so you might wait to sit) and the staff are incredibly kind and love their work. Coffee and food are good too! The pistachio latte is awesome and the sandwiches are so yummy. I’ll be back.

Small but very unique touristy spot to check out. The halloumi and avocado roll was to die for! Salty, spicy, sweet, and creamy. The cold brew was also on point. I highly recommend this stop on your way to the John Snow water pump.
An amazing cafe in a repurposed public toilet. The coffee and food are wonderful. Staff are friendly. It is a very love and quirky cafe. In Hong Kong, there is similar 100 year old public toilet but I can never image a public toilet becomes a cafe.
