Indigo is the absolute best option for the discerning gluten-free eater. We dined here last Thursday to celebrate my partners PhD graduation. His father is gluten intolerant, so we were really struggling to find a restaurant that also fit the occasion. Indigo delivered a truly spectacular menu fit for the celebration.
The service was attentive but not overbearing, the food was delicious and the ambience was really beautiful. Indigo overlooks the main hotel bar from an indoor terrace. You have a gorgeous view of the ground floor, and the spectacular flower arrangements.
I am not gluten free but I will absolutely be coming back here. Perfect for a date or small group.
Ambience : a nice place to spend time with friends.. nice environment. good music...photo booth was the place...
service was quick. staff was nice and humble.
One Aldwych. A beautiful hotel with an addition of a great bar. Staff are courteous and polite.
Service was fantastic but in a hotel of this callibre I would expect nothing else. Have been here several times, prices are as expected but catching up with an old friend at Christmas it was perfect! Cocktails were delicious.
The week before my 25th birthday was full of dinners and celebrating with friends. On the Thursday Jasiminne and I went to One Aldwych to test out their Spring Aperitivos collection cocktails, and the gluten-free and dairy-free menu at their informal restaurant; Indigo. Considering everything on the menu was gluten-free and dairy-free, we were both incredibly impressed with the choices available and the gorgeous surroundings of the hotel...
Chefs these days face an uphill struggle when trying to negotiate the dietary nuances of all their customers. Most people I know have one or more food intolerances and many of us compound that with dietary preferences. Woe betides the chef who can’t produce a decent vegetarian (with vegan option) tasting menu. I suspect I’m a little unsympathetic to the ‘preferences’ category. There are plenty of good vegetarian or flexitarian restaurants around now and my personal take is that those who chose a vegetarian or vegan diet shouldn’t demand things to suit themselves that might not appeal to those of us with a carnivorous bent.
This is not your ordinary afternoon tea. Don’t come if you are just looking for boring sandwiches and cakes that will give you a toothache. This tea set is based on Charlie and Chocolate factory musical. Be ready to be inspired! It is fun and delicious. Charlie & The Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea x 1- £37.50
While enjoying a staycation at One Aldwych, my husband and I had dinner at Indigo. A full review of our entire meal and stay at the hotel is on my blog Sunny in London, however, the dinner was spectacular. I had the most perfectly cooked piece of lamb I have ever eaten in my life. Everything was truly 5 star!
Ate from the pre-theatre fixed menu and was sorely disappointed. Food was very plain indeed and my partner missed dessert as we ran out of time. Service was attentive though and the setting splendid. Would visit again to sample the a la carte menu.
Great Brunch. Very nice brunch... I like a poached egg that doesn't come soaking in water and placed just so on a circle cut of toast just looks kinda cool. You'll see carrot juice on the menu but you can get carrot ginger which is a treat and a good hangover cure. Service is excellent.
The London Restaurant Festival ran from 3rd to 17th October this year. The third year it has run, in my opinion, it was also the best Festival we had to date. It has grown from previous years and is now a real celebration of what British restaurants have to offer. Along with the 'main menu' events involving well-known and established restaurants, the 'side dishes' were an opportunity for new and less well-known restaurants to introduce themselves to a wider audience. In the latter category, there were some great finds and bargains to be had. In addition to this, it was an excellent opportunity to experience the cooking of top Michelin-starred chefs from different parts of the UK in London at affordable prices, including Sat Bains and Nathan Outlaw to name just a couple who cooked at Fortnum & Mason's. If you missed the Festival this year, I urge you to keep your eyes peeled for the 2012 event. Below is a round-up of some of my favourite events this year. Eat Film at The Covent Garden H
A slice of tranquillity in London's West End:
Finding peace and quiet in our great city London can sometimes be quite a challenge.
That was until a couple of years ago I stumbled upon Indigo Restaurant in the heart of the West End at One Aldwych. Ever since visiting it has remained a firm family favourite.
Weekend brunch is wonderful, Two courses cost £21, Three courses £24 and you can add unlimited Prosecco for £14.
I love pancakes and cooked fresh with the addition of chocolate chips these are just divine.
For main I opt for roast cornfed chicken, seasonal vegetables and roast potatoes.
The chicken is cooked perfectly and the bouillon gravy is just wonderful.
For dessert Indigo has loads of choice, buttermilk panna cotta with rhubarb compote, Bellini sorbet and apple upside down cake with apple sorbet.
Indigo restaurant at One Aldwych is a wonderful escape from the craziness of London. All in all a wonderful meal and nothing beats a weekend of good food and catching up with family.
We've been dining out a lot lately (you may have noticed) so it was lovely to have a more informal meal in the comfortable autumn-hued restaurant.
We really enjoyed the Modern European menu and chose a simple smoked salmon platter served with blinis and some crab on toast to start.
Those really are blinis, even though they look like scallops!
For main course, Mr S went seasonal with a perfectly cooked venison and poached pear.
For me, sea bass and seafood is always in fashion so that was my choice.
Desserts were a real highlight...
Apple tarte tartin, Mr S and I loved apple based puddings.
And it was Christmas so we wanted something chocolate-y. Despite the fact I'd already had three chocolate truffles...actually chocolate seems to be something that One Aldwych does very well and I'm keen to return for their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory afternoon tea.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a 1964 children's book by British author Roald Dahl. The novel details the adventures of young Charlie Bucket inside the chocolate factory of eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka. For those of you who haven't read the book I'm sure you would have seen, or at least heard of, Tim Burton's film adaptation of the book in 2005 with Johnny Depp as the quirky Willy Wonka. In spite of the movie being almost a decade ago I still remember it being weird on every level (a good kind of weird). The stunning visual effects and witty scenes, the lovably sweet or humorously rotten characters coupled with dark humour made this dazzling movie an unforgettable one for me. So when I found out that I'll be having an afternoon tea inspired by the classic tale at One Aldwych I was thrilled. Absolutely thrilled.
My friend, Mijune, and I were so excited about tea we didn't even bother going up to our rooms after checking in at One Aldwych (Twitter: @OneAldwych, Facebook: One Aldwych). We had our bags sent up while we made our way to Indigo Restaurant, one of the two restaurants at the hotel.
Our table right by the railing overlooks The Lobby Bar downstairs.
Guests can choose either the standard Afternoon tea (£34.50) or Afternoon tea with a glass of Lallier Grande Réserve Champagne or a smoking Cocktail Charlie (£45.00). Mijune and I opted for the Cocktail Charlie and boy, it was really something else. Brought over to the table with smoking dry ice furiously bubbling from a clear glass teapot, the cocktail is then poured into a tall and skinny martini-shaped glass. I loved the effect and presentation of this whimsical cocktail because it is a spot-on portrayal of the peculiar, bizarre story. Although the concoction resembled something more like a science experiment than a cocktail it was really delicious and easy to drink. What an awesome way to start afternoon tea!
COCKTAIL CHARLIE
Dalmore whisky mixed with Grand Marnier Cherry, chocolate bitters, grapefruit juice and cherry syrup. Topped with Champagne.
For our teas we chose "Jewelled Apple", a black tea with wild strawberry leaves, caramel and real apple pieces, and "Organic Lavender Grey", an organic Earl Grey with lavender from Provence. After a few sips we both preferred the Jewelled Apple over the Lavender Grey.
Cocktails, teas, sandwiches, tarts and quiches to begin the savoury part of our afternoon tea.
SANDWICHES
Roast beef and horseradish on onion bread
Cucumber and chive crème fraîche on wholemeal bread
Cured smoked salmon and lemon mayonnaise on rye bread
SAVOURY
Heritage tomato tart
Leek and Stilton quiche
After our sandwiches and tarts we were served a basket of warm scones with plum jam, apple and meadowsweet compote, and Devonshire clotted cream. The pastry basket was accompanied by a very impressive "podium" of delicious sweets, the highlight of the tea service.
SWEET
Golden egg with vanilla cheesecake and mango purée
Chocolate caramel milk
Eton mess
Homemade candyfloss
Blueberry brioche
Lemon crackle pops
Cocoa bean financier
This blueberry brioche was mind-blowing-ly tasty. I enjoyed it even more than the scones.
A cocktail to start and chocolate caramel milk to end afternoon tea. So clever. The kid in me wanted 10 of these (if not more). Even though the milk sounds insanely sweet it was perfect - think chocolate milk with just a hint of caramel.
From the theatrical Cocktail Charlie, exquisite tarts and quiches, to the decadent golden eggs, blueberry brioche and playful flavoured candy floss, every item on One Aldwych's afternoon tea reflects the wit and wonder of Dahl's whimsical story. It was a beautiful and fantastical feast in a relaxed, casual setting and it is definitely the most memorable afternoon tea I've ever had to date. By the way if you're looking for an ultimate Charlie & The Chocolate Factory day out, One Aldwych offers a Tea & Ticket package where you can combine your afternoon tea with a ticket to see the musical.
We dined at Indigo - we arrived tired and was looking for wanted a good food. We certainly got one! Ordering first a moctail, which was fine, we felt we needed the Rib-eye steak which came perfectly cooked medium rare with french fries and sauce bearnaise. We had been in Rome and had eaten very well, but this steak was outstandingly good in both flavour and texture. A couple of glasses of decent claret helped to wash it down and then we were again blissfully happy! Service by a experienced waitress was nonetheless faultless and we enjoyed the experience in Indigo very much.
This place is absolutely perfect. The food is so good!! There are so many options for gluten-free food. The service is spectacular!! Our waitress was lovely and charming! And the place itself is so nice and comfortable, and when we were there, there was a live single who did covers for great songs. Very recommended!!
This place is hands down the best place I have been for a gluten free dinner …. Ever!
They did a ‘Cornish’ theme, with all food sourced from Devon and Cornwall. It was all absolutely delicious and the quality and presentation amazing. My husband was equally impressed and commented that unlike other GF foods being a little less like the original, this was amazing unconditionally. The chef was outstanding. Wish this was closer to home. But will be a regular when I am back in London!
We went to Indigo for a special birthday breakfast and were not disappointed. It's pricey but worth it. We got rosti and waffles. Both were excellent, balanced with good accompaniments. The real highlight was the service. Incredible from start to finish. A wonderful place for a special date. They even brought us a little birthday cake surprise at the end.
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience here. Everything on the menu is gluten and dairy free. We ordered off the set menu, two courses for £35/person. That said by the time we added sides, a couple of drinks etc the bill was almost twice what we were orignlinally expecting and we weren't lavish. It is quite upmarket too as a restaurant. All that said if I was in London again I would definitely go back!
My wife has recently been diagnosed as Coeliac and we struggle to find a restaurant that can cater for her. It was our wedding anniversary and I wanted to treat her to a fantastic dinner.
This place is amazing! The food was outstanding and the service was super. We will be back.
We absolutely enjoyed our evening at Indigo. The staff was very kind, we felt very comfortable. The food was incredible, ingredients were super fresh and didn’t need any seasoning, that truly says something! The pavlova was a work of art as well! Can’t wait to come back ☺️
Indigo is located on the first floor of the one Aldwych hotel. It’s a mezzanine floor looking out to the bar downstairs, slight lower ceilings with Nice interior, Warm welcome.
Staff were very friendly and accommodating.
We have a show at 7.30 and opted for the theatre menu.
The tomato salad was good as was the chicken terrine.
The pork dish was presented beautifully with a little cup of mushrooms, pancetta and peas.
Sauce was excellent.
An excellent choice for dining around Theaterland.
Lovely setting and excellent service. Half our party eat from the pre-theatre menu and half from the a la carte. The highlights were the fish and chips, where the chips were marvellous and the slow cooked lamb which amazingly was crispy as well as beautifully tender inside. We also had a cocktail in the bar before which was tasty and well presented. Overall service very good as well.
We had an awesome time at Indigo’s.
We booked a table at 5.30 for pre-theatre, which was perfectly handled by the restaurant.
The waiters are kind, polite and they make sure you have everything you need during your dinner.
The restaurant offers a pre-theatre menu with 2/3 courses, it’s affordable and quick.
The food is excellent and the white wine we tasted was very good.
I recommend this restaurant for a special occasion or if you need to go to the theatre (just in front, by the way).
We had breakfast here and enjoyed everything. Gluten free menu that tastes fantastic.
