What we went for: Dinner date ..to celebrate 11 years since we first met this week that year

Ambience: the decor is classy, fine and minimal.
Many different sections to this place.. the bar, the lounge, the dessert bar, the restaurant, the kitchen ofcourse.
the servers are all friendly, with a smile and very little affectation.

What we ordered: starters-duck and quail liver for myself, sea scallops for the mister,
Lamb loin with hot pot for my entree and the sea turbot for the hubby
Apple Tatin with minus 8 vinegar ice cream for the hubby and the brogsdale pear with goat’s milk ice cream and honey and bee pollen for myself

Cocktails- monkey business for the mister, ten pollen for me

A glass of Sangiovese and a glass of Riesling

And a bottle of still water!

Price : Gbp 230

Verdict: every dish was carefully and beautifully constructed but the highlights were probably the turbot and the brogsdale pear aaand the mushroom tea that appeared as an in between course.. it was simply magical with its aroma and mellow taste! The tea of gods indeed!

The service was faultless, the place got busy and I couldn’t help but notice the steady stream of the restaurant staff who seemed to be going about their work with such efficiency! It was smooth sailing traffic on the busy floor and I guess perhaps only one dropped glass in the 2 hours we were there!

Would I return? Why not ? The restaurant made such a big deal of our anniversary I love it! With Anil

This place missed a fiver by a whisker; though i have never given 5 and this restaurant was close to get one my list, but from heart i still can rate them as one of the best

A restaurant is known by its service decor and above all food and on all three this stands apart as the team was quick to understand your need, service was impeccable, food great, presentation one of the best then what else you can ask for

For me this will be always one to go in every time I am in London.

A Must visit

We were having the chefs menu and till last everyone was over the moon with the food and we ordered desserts, though i had two Japanese and Korean with hard core Indian who loves his whisky; since the ice cream was accompanied by whisky sauce anticipation were high but when it was poured over the ice cream we all looked at each other and asked isn't whisky two empowering and we all said yes in unanimous ........chef this was only thing which was out of place but full respect to chef maybe our taste buds were not up to the mark.....anyway Indian can never say to no to Whisky.

A truly value for money 3 course set lunch at £37 and so many more courses than 3! Half a bottle of wine with the lunch brings it up to £55.

Every course was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. We tried the ox cheek and the partridge as main courses and both were excellent.

The desserts are mouth-watering including the extra petit fours that were served.

Service was attentive, friendly and warm. Highly recommended! One of the best restaurants in London.

Great dining experience. I ate here a few weeks ago so I've forgotten the exact name of the dish.

We came in for lunch. I opted for the lunch menu which I recommend because you get 3 courses and lots of extra complementary dishes. It was so worth it for a michelin restaurant.

My brother on the other hand opted for their ala carte menu. All of our meals are great!! I especially liked my brother's lobster appetizer and my crab appetizer.

The waiters seem to know all the dishes very well.

Jason Atherton has done very well for himself. The last time I ate his food was way back at the original Maze, when he was still working for Ramsay and when the restaurant had a Michelin star. I still remember two things with that meal – the excellent ‘BLT’ dish that he got to the banquet of Great British Menu Season 2 and a horrible, overly acidic beetroot dish which still gives me beetroot nightmares. Since parting ways, Atherton has expanded his empire at a rapid rate, with his Social branded restaurants mushrooming up all over the globe almost as quick as Ramsay’s restaurant brand. He even has had time to launch his own brand of tableware with John Lewis! Somewhere along the way, he has also picked up his mentor’s knack of collecting Michelin stars. In total, Atherton now owns three restaurants with a solitary star each although a second star is proving elusive.

The other day I was shocked as a good friend started cooking bolognese, then got out some frozen diced onions. I had no idea such a thing existed, and even more so that someone would use it. I expressed my shock and was quickly told (more like asked) to re-evaluate my position. Shortly after, I did. As a mother of two children aged 4 and 1, time was important as well as cooking a good meal for her children. What was so bad about having onions which had been preserved by freezing and saved someone time and energy? After an hour with the food eaten, I was a happy foodie. The onions had been cooked perfectly, and if I had not seen them in their packaging I would have had no idea they were frozen. So now I am a convert. I haven't bought any yet, but they're available in all supermarkets, not just the one you would expect

I tend to base my expectations of a restaurant on 1. the plate setting and 2. the bread.  I find that if a restaurant is willing to pay attention to the small things then it is usually a good sign.  Just like shoes (and especially their condition) when on a professional really seem to tell a story. At least, before you get to know them better. After all, would you trust a lawyer whose shoes looked like he got them from a dumpster?  Or for that matter, a cook whose attire was filthy.

23rd March 2015 · by Chris · in eating , England , London I have a bit of a thing for crockery as you might have figured out. So I couldn’t help but admire the plate setting at the table.  Simply exquisite! I have to give the restaurant 5 stars for presentation.  These are the amuse bouches.  Nicely arranged like it was a tea service. A mushroom steamed custard (I think?) with mushroom soup.  The soup is in that teapot you see above.  Not bad but we all found it a bit too salty.  Not enough to detract from the total experience significnatly. Churros.  I love churros.  What’s not to like about deep fried dough?  But instead of the usual chocolate dipping sauce, you had a truffle paste you could elect to add to these which lent a very strong pleasant truffle taste. Madeleines with some type of seafood cream on top.  Sorry, I wasn’t (as usual) paying attention when the waiter explained what these were.  I was later to regret this as my fellow diners and myself racked our brains and tongues trying to figure out what these were as they were just so good. Egg with pig’s ears and black pudding.  I usually avoid black pudding like it has some infectious element because of its often cloying and overpowering aftertaste.  However, the blood pudding, when combined with the delightful crispiness of the pig’s ears, went well.

This restaurant has everything going for it. Sensational food, great service, great wine (and champagne) list and best of all great value for money. We had the tasting menu - swapping a course of deer tartare for the turbot was not an issue and was jaw droppingly good. Too many great dishes to name - but the 'oyster' starter and the scallop are not to be missed.

My boyfriend surprised me for our anniversary by taking me to Pollen Street Social. It was amazing, I felt like a princess. We had the seven course tasting menu, with many little free tasters along the way (pork crackle, olives, bread, mini desserts etc). The food and atmosphere was absolutely perfect, the staff were quite charming and knew about each item on the menu, and suggested a selection of wines to go with the meal. I was quite impressed, with both the quality and style. When we received our bill, our waiter brought me over a little white box, tied with a ribbon, with the words 'happy anniversary from Pollen Street Social'.. It had some delicious mini desserts inside. Best dinner ever!

Incredible. From start to finish this restaurant is wonderful. I had a table reserved for 9.30 in the evening and when I walked in with my girlfriend the staff at the front desk were very friendly and took our coats. We sat at the bar as our table was prepared and took in the surroundings, the atmosphere was unpretentious and warm, you can see lots of thought has gone into the feel of the place.

The waiting staff weren't frantic and took time for each of the tables, which was a nice change.

Once we were seated we both chose the 7 course taster menu as we both wanted to try as many things as possible.
Over the next hour each course that arrived was better than the last, in particular the twist on patatas bravas was amazing.

At the end of the meal the kitchen was closing and Jason Atherton himself came to our table and said hello. Having worked as a pastry chef myself in the past I wanted to pass on to him that the food was excellent and that the restaurant was really well laid out.

All in all this is a restaurant run by a man who knows exactly what he wants to achieve and is doing it to incredible standards.

Good food!. Went there for Lunch to celebrate a friends birthday. The reception team could be more welcoming. Also, their outfits (and shoes!) were not really in keeping with the whole decor and feel of the room. Food was very good. I love the bread and the little salt cod dip that was served with it. Service was a bit of a hit and miss. Again, like the reception team, not much smile from waiters. The headwaiter warmed to us afterwards though. Dessert menu was offered even before the side plates and knives were cleared...No petit fours with coffees! good end to the meal were the little bag of goodies that you get as a surprise!

Fancy-pants and tasty too. I'm almost always prejudiced against fancy restaurants, full of beautiful people with main courses >£20. The main course of pork arrived, the dish looked extremely elegant with each element placed with immaculate precision. If you’ve read my blog before you should know by now how much I love pork belly!!! This was amongst the best I’ve ever eaten, just the slightest amount of pressure and the meat just fell apart. The pork was so tender and moist it really did melt in the mouth and there wasn’t even much need to chew. The pig cheek was also very delicious, lightly spiced so it didn’t overpower the flavour of the meat. For pig cheek to be cooked well, it must be slowly cooked so the gelatinous nature of it melts away leaving a wonderful texture behind. The accompaniments were also superbly cooked and all added to the overall dish. Such as the apple, which everyone knows is a perfect partner with pork, its tartness cutting through the richness of the meat. The black pudding was really tasty, I’m not usually a huge fan of the stuff when the flavour is too concentrated, but this was very tast

Pollen Street Social is the flagship of the Jason Atherton restaurant empire. Holding one Michelin star and ranked number 6 in the 2015 Good Food Guide with a score of 9 it can be safe to say the food here is pretty good. We visited one recent Saturday afternoon and sampled the following: Amuse bouche - mushroom consommé, goats cheese churros with truffle honey, black pudding croquette and black garlic cookie Colchester crab salad, apple & coriander, black garlic, lemon puree, brown crab foam, sourdough crisps – a very fresh dish with simple flavours to complement the crab. Buccleuch Estate steak tartare, smoked beetroot, wild leaves, berry pearls – sharp flavours which the beef stood up well to. Hay smoked quail “brunch”, cereals, toast & tea. The quail arrived in a box and continued to smoke whilst the rest of the components were delivered, the toast and tea turned out to be brioche toast with liver mousse and quail Broth, the cereals were a crispy quail egg and crispy grains. The full english is served up in a bowl – a rich tomato puree topped with crispy streaky bacon, croutons and a soft boiled egg. It’s the little differences that make the big differences.  In April 2011, former Gordon Ramsay stable-mate and protégé, Jason Atherton launched his first solo venture in a little alleyway in Mayfair.  Now well over a year into its life-cycle, Pollen Street Social has gone from a promising teenager still shedding the last remnants of acne to a fully fledged, hairy chested adult. A restaurant of juxtapositions and contradictions with few trade-offs:  Just as Burger & Lobster broke Mayfair etiquette by providing a hospitable venue for sub-six-figure plebs like me to eat and drink, Pollen Street Social offers a fully realised Michelin dining experience without the overtones of exclusivity or undertones of arrogance that typically go with the area. It’s a relatively large space that includes a long wooden bar laden with elegant green table lamps near the entrance.  The main dining room is more brightly lit with white linen tables and a dessert bar that sees into the kitchen.  Downstairs li

But it’s the sort of place we can rarely get into without planning months in advance, so that when I saw that there was a table free at lunchtime on Monday, I jumped at it. It was the end of the summer holidays, it was a Monday, it was inexplicably quiet. Oh and it was our wedding anniversary. Although I got the day wrong. The vibe is modern and expensive. It is just had a refurb, according to the maitre d’, but I wasn’t able to tell what had changed. My memory doesn’t go back two years. I’ve had rather a long standing love affair with Jason Atherton’s cookery. I first heard about him through seeing him on the Great British Menu and thought that his cooking looked good enough for my yearly birthday meal (2008) to warrant a trip to Maze. 2 starters, 4 mains, a cheese course and a dessert later and I was hooked. BLT in a glass, beef ‘tongue n cheek and peanut butter and jelly ice-cream sandwich still remain some of my best food memories, thankfully not dampened by the memory of the appallingly boring and uninspiring meal at Maze Cape Town. Knowing he was back in business therefore made me extremely excited.

Of course the word “social” conjures thoughts of companionship and conviviality (not to mention drunken hours at The Social’s yacht rock nights) but the “pollen” to me comes across bright, yellow, springlike and promising. A good name also implies thought, care and attention, and Jason Atherton’s first solo venture displays those qualities in droves.

Whenever I plan the eating itinerary for city re-visits I get a sense of déjà vu as I find myself considering a list of venues very similar to that of the last trip. It's easy to forget how spoilt we are here in London, with new openings almost weekly, and as a blogger it takes real dedication (not to mention an iron stomach) to keep up. I've long since given up - evident in my tardy arrival at the sleek floor-to-ceiling glass-panelled facade of Jason Atherton's Pollen Street Social , a good month after its launch. I was greeted with a smile and bestowed with a mysterious numbered key (more on that later) before being led to a table for two, just a little further down from the mile-long bar. Upon taking my seat I immediately asked for the cocktail menu; B was running late and I wasn't about to wait empty-handed. Wanting to choose wisely I sought help from the waiter who suggested the Marmalade Martini. I looked doubtful and waited for more recommendations but after a long pause it en

Their menu online showed a set lunch menu, certainly a more affordable way that I generally use to experience many of the capital's more expensive restaurants. Booking for lunches is also easier than booking for dinners. I was hoping to have some of the exciting dishes from the a la carte menu too; this was, of course, holiday eating! Last Thursday, we made our way to the restaurant for our lunch booking. We were led through the bar (gotta try those tapas one day) and brought to a generously-sized table in the middle of the dining room, close to the much hyped dessert bar (we never got to sit at it) and with a great view of the kitchen. Lots of sourdough bread and butter arrived soon after we ordered and not long after that, we also received a little dish of brandade de morue, a delicious salt

I'd been to the Social once previously for a cocktail - the barman asked me what flavours I liked and whipped me up an autumnal take on a mojito to die for - and had actually met the main man himself, Jason Atherton, very briefly. However, it couldn't have prepared me for the culinary expertise we went on to indulge in.

We kicked off with a Bloody Mary each before choosing a bottle of Pomerol to share over lunch. Whilst we were poring over the incredible menu, we were brought appetisers of homemade bread with a salted cod cheek dip, salted gorda olives and pork scratching 'crisps' served with an apple and mustard relish.

To start, I chose 'A very English smoked salmon' - more than just a dish, it's an experience as the maitre d' brings out your lightly smoked fish in its own smoking box, and serves it onto your plate of bib lettuce and beetroot onions. Along with innumerable ingredients, there's also an accompanying tin of a lemon creme fraiche topped with caviar.

Then, I chose the Cornish seabass which was served with a cuttlefish, parsley and cockle chowder with squid ink potatoes. The vibrant colour and flavour of the veloute against the perfectly-cooked white fish was absolutely perfect. Dad, who had a similar dish from the lunch menu, whole-heartedly agreed.

We were then given a palate cleanser of passionfruit granita with a mango and lime foam, before I couldn't resist ordering a lemon verbena sorbet with bergamot meringue and olive oil gel. Yes, really. It was a day of indulgence, evidently. Further proven by the white chocolate coated freeze-dried raspberries and mini macarons (we chose green tea, peach and chocolate) that came served with our coffees.

The service, as expected, was impeccable and the experience out of this world. Whilst it may be easy to scoff at the prices of expensive restaurants, the proof of the pudding really is in the eating. With the most inspired combinations of ingredients and the most impeccable attention to detail in all areas, that's taken absolute years to accomplish, the price at Pollen Street Social really is worth every penny.

It's the kind of place that I'd make weekly return trips to if I could (I can't), and it's now top of my recommendations if anyone ever asks me. An incredibly indulgent meal, for all the right reasons, that left the most amazing taste in my mouth. Which was still there two days later when I polished off the incredible bitter chocolate pave that the maitre d' had given me as a birthday present. Perfect.

My favourite restaurant at the moment. The food is amazing (get the turbot!) and comes with so many little extras, so creative. I loved my first visit which was perfect, staff wasn't quite as attentive the second time I went. I don't recommend the tasting menu which wasn't quite as convincing. Get the English breakfast and the Turbot and some excellent cheese from the trolley and you're much better off!

Having been before a couple of years ago I was keen to refresh my memory after being invited by a friend to join him there for dinner. Since that first visit I had grown to love the food and ambience on offer at Atherton's Social Eating House in Soho. With this new perspective on his portfolio I went with great anticipation.

As you would expect the front of house and waiting staff were friendly, energetic and attentive. I was pleased to be offered a drink by a fellow sherry lover, who recommended the Amontillado Seco Napoleon Hidalgo to ponder as I perused the very imaginative menu. Choosing was by no means easy and despite seeing the locally sourced cuts of meat hanging up in a glass case en route to the subterranean toilets, I was drawn to the seafood offerings, opting for the crab salad to begin followed by Monkfish with curry source. Both dishes delighted in taste and texture, most notably for the way that the imaginative constituent elements of each dish came together so beautifully to create something far great than the sum of its parts. Regrettably the desert menu didn't quite offer anything that appealed to our tastes, so we called for the bill and enjoyed the sweet treats that came therewith, the highlight being the deep frozen mashed banana and chocolate. So simple, yet like nothing I've experience before. The texture, as it went from crunchy, through chewy, to mushy was like something Willy Wonka could only have dreamed of.

Despite still being slightly hungry on the walk home, it was a delightful experience that captured the best of fine dining but without the pretension. All that said, I think I'd opt for the Social Eating House next time around. I recall the portions being bigger.

Next it was on to dinner and the venue was Pollen Street Social, a restaurant we'd both been keen to try for ages.

Jason Atherton is the man of the moment! He already has five incredibly popular restaurants in London, including Berners Tavern, and the newly opened City Social. He has achieved worldwide acclaim with several restaurants in Asia and a plan for a new one in Dubai.

Pollen Street Social is the jewel in Atherton's crown. It opened in 2011 and was awarded a Michelin star after only six months.

I find some Michelin restaurants can be a bit staid and stuffy, but Pollen Street Social is the opposite. It was lively and buzzing!

Then we amused our bouches.
At an amazing restaurant like this I must alway mention the bread, it is my favourite thing after all...

Though a simple sourdough or white baguette, the bread was cooked freshly and perfectly crisp on the outside.

As best friends always do, we chose to share everything

Line caught Devon squid cooked in cauliflower with roasted squid juices, ink rice and sea herbs. Everything on the plate was perfectly cooked with each ingredient marrying together in harmony.

Orkney sea scallop carpaccio, kohlrabi, frozen pink grapefruit, lemon skin puree and samphire. The dish was so light, fresh and zesty! We were in heaven!

We waited in eager anticipation of the main course...

Breast and confit leg of guinea fowl with a gorgeous little guinea fowl bolognese. I had worried that this would be too heavy but as it was so perfectly portioned it was ideal!

Sea bass with parsley mousseline, cockles, winkles and broccoli was another star. Just check out those gorgeous emerald greens!

A gorgeous little palette cleanser.

And the who doesn't love best friend bonding over chocolate.

And this was comfort food at its best!

But this strawberry sensation was the real show stopper! Much more light and refreshing.

But it didn't end there with the sweet treats.

The meal ended with three delicious kinds of petit fours. I love all the little extras that Pollen Street Social gave us and the birthday girl definitely felt very spoiled!

For no better reason than indulging ourselves on a day off, sister-in-law & I have decided to splurge on a decadent lunch at Michelin starred Pollen Street Social. It's not quite as extravagant as you may think - 2 courses at lunch set you back £28 with three courses coming in at £35.There's a relaxed and open atmosphere pervading the restaurant but on a Monday lunchtime, it is largely full of business lunchers, no doubt taking advantage of a good deal.

While we peruse the menu (it's short but really difficult to decide), amuse bouches arrive, attractively presented in a box made to look like a book. Not sure about why it's in a book, but there's a pork crackling piece, caraway wafer and Parmesan crisp. The caraway wafer & pork crackling are both a little dry and therefore a bit gloopy when chewed but loved the rich crumbly Parmesan cheese crisp. It tasted a bit like what I imagine Cheese flavoured shortbread to taste like - gooood.

All the starter options look great but after much pondering, I opt for the full English breakfast with soft cooked egg. It's beautifully assembled, with thin crisp slices of bacon, crouton, tomato puree (a little too much of this I thought) with the aforementioned soft cooked egg oozing rich orangey yolk into my plate. The tomato was a little overpowering & I personally felt the dish was a little over-salted.

Sister-in-law has opted for the gamey mosaic terrine and it's another beautifully presented plate. The terrine is rich and chunky and I feel she may have the ordering edge here.

We had a similar problem choosing our mains - but I've settled on the Pork Belly, served with Potato Hash, Sauerkraut, smoked sausage & sprout tops. Once again, very attractively presented and in a way quite unusual for Pork Belly. It was tender and fell apart at the slightest hint of my knife slicing into it. The potato hash with smoked sausage wasn't really to my taste, it was too lumpy and a little too salty again for me. The sauerkraut, although nice, didn't add an awful lot to the overall experience, the pork being the star of the show.

The other main at the table was the Roast red-legged partridge with spiced orange & fennel & coffee-pickled dates & walnuts. Again, this is a beautiful plate (Do you sense a bit of a pattern here?) and the partridge is well cooked and nicely flavoured.

So far, so good. The mains are good. But it's been a few weeks since our visit & now that I'm writing this, my memory is a little hazy on details. I had to revisit the photos to remember what I had and sister-in-law confessed she felt the same.

Before we arrive at dessert, we're offered a palate cleanser of mandarin sorbet with yoghurt foam and kaffir lime. I'm not a fan of this, as it's just a little too bitter, although it does what is says on the tin, and refreshes the tastebuds.

The desserts are a far more memorable course - we're faced with the option of continuing with our set menu or going off piste to check out the dessert bar menu (PSS has its very own dessert bar spanning one side of the room & I regret not decamping there to watch the dessert making in action) but nevertheless we've taken them up on the offer to order from the other menu.

This too requires a long length of time to make our decisions and we've finally agreed on our options - I go for 'Thai flavours', its a concoction of Peanut cream, green apple & yuzu purée with compressed celery and frozen praline. There isn't enough 'Thai' in it for me, I'd have preferred a Lemongrass hit to give it that Thai flavour, its more of what I'd consider to be a apple pie with a mild peanut flavour. The peanut cream I feel should be a little colder as it's a little anti climatic at room temperature, but overall, this is a very refreshing and zingy dessert.

Sister-in-law has won the dessert lottery though, she's gone for a 'PBJ', peanut parfait with cherry yuzu sorbet and a peanut wafer crunch. This is all my childhood memories of a peanut butter and jam sandwich rolled into a dessert and I wished I'd gone for this one.

While finishing off our desserts, we're intrigued by a herb trolley we've been watching do the rounds of the restaurant - naturally we can't resist and decide to try for ourselves its offerings. We can choose our own herb combo to make our own fresh teas and while this is a great idea in theory, the results are a little weak. We both for basil, lemongrass and mint but the flavour is overwhelmingly mint, the basil & lemongrass making very little impact. This answers the question on why more restaurants don't offer such a trolley themselves.

We had a great time at Pollen Street social, the staff were friendly and polite, the room has a buzz about it that seamlessly marries the fun with the formality required for occasion dining but the details of the meal simply don't spring to mind so quickly, which in itself is quite telling. Try it out for yourself, it won't break the bank and you'll certainly have a nice time.

Went for set lunch for birthday. Extra touches and attention to detail were fantastic. Canapés, extra dessert and mini jam scones supplemented an already great lunch. Styled as "de-formalised dining" which I don't think is wholly accurate, however, that's not an issue when food is so good. Can't wait to try Atherton's other restaurants!

With head chef Jason Atherton's attentions torn between the startling number of new places he's overseen in the last couple of years here and abroad (Little Social, Social Eating House, and the upcoming Berners Tavern in London, and a good handful of others in Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai) it's all the more impressive he's found time to refurbish and revamp the menu at the Mayfair flagship. This was my first visit, so I can't tell you if the dining room(s) - pleasant and clean if only slightly lacking in character - were an improvement on before or not. Still, it's not a bad place to be for a couple of hours.

Amuses came in a great big box, which was a fun idea, and were largely good. Some powerfully herb-encrusted crackers were our favourite, followed by a cheesy biscuit topped with a kind of tomato-anchovy paste ("it's like a Mini Cheddar" my friend sagely observed). But I'm afraid a lump of pork crackling was so heavily grease-sodden it was like eating an old sponge soaked in cooking oil - not the kind of thing you'd want (or indeed expect) to kick off a meal in such a place.

Starters were, fortunately, much harder to fault. "Pea velouté, pea sorbet, cirtrus crème fraîche" was a beautiful display of summer colour and flavour, and with that irresistable command of contrasting texture that made my dish of the year so far (the pea and celery at Dairy) special. My own quail "brunch" (Atherton has also been known for his playful take on the "Full English Breakfast" in the past) came in a box of hay smoke, with a little brioche topped with a perfect chicken liver parfait and a glorious rich game consommé in a little teacup. It was, all of it, fun and flavoursome, exactly the kind of thing I'd hoped to be eating.

What a shame, then, that two 'extra' courses sent out next served only to demonstrate that not everything from the menu is as successful. I deliberately didn't order the crab salad with pineapple as a starter because it sounded weird, and weird it most definitely turned out to be, sweet and soggy and difficult to enjoy despite a nice presentation. And scallop carpaccio with tiny frozen nuggets of sour pink grapefruit didn't do much for me either, serving only to remind of a similarly underwhelming raw scallop and pomelo starter from Hutong at the Shard a few weeks earlier.

And then, bewilderingly, both main courses were superb. A bright white slab of perfectly-tooked turbot, skin crisped-up just so, resting on earth bulgur wheat and cardamom purée, was nigh-on irreproachable. And my own curried monkfish, moist and meaty and exact, won similar praise. Steer away from crustaceans and towards the fish is my advice - these guys know what to do with the stuff.

"Nuances of red" was attractive alright (you'll have to take my word on that) but there was too much bitterness from a rather unripe pear, and not enough of interest elsewhere. That'll teach me mainly for ordering based on a silly name and not the list of ingredients; I would say I've only got myself to blame but then I don't see why I shouldn't blame Pollen Street Social as well for serving bitter raw pear. Much, much better was "70% chocolate ganache, banana ice cream", a name which goes no way to describe the simply extraordinary 'coral' of banana and chocolate ice cream which formed the bulk of my friend's dessert. As well as tasting incredible, it dissolved in the mouth like cold candyfloss, and was quite unlike anything either of us had ever tried before. And surely they deserve extra marks for that.

So there are, undoubtedly, many reasons to visit Pollen Street Social and many ways of ordering yourself a fantastic meal. But there are also enough duds lurking around that ordering yourself a fantastic meal is by no means a given. And when you factor in the very Mayfair prices (£15-£20 starters, £30-£40 mains), I'm afraid it pushes the overall score to just below what I would consider high praise.

But that said, we did enjoy ourselves. And for every misstep to linger on there was always that pea starter, the hay-smoked quail, the fish main courses and that incredible banana and chocolate ice cream dessert to rest happily in our memories. So I'll have to leave it up to you to decide whether you think Pollen Street Social is worth your own hard-earned. As the evenings rapidly close in, to warn they're likely to get much worse before they get better.

This is Jason Atherton’s first solo venture after many years in the Gordon Ramsay stable, for example at Verre in Dubai and most recently Maze in Grosvenor Square. In addition to the main dining room there was a bar area serving tapas (Jason spent some time cooking in Spain) and included a couple of tables that are not reserved and set aside for walk-in guests. There is also a separate dessert bar in the main dining room. The tapas were mostly in the £6 - £9 range and included pata negra from Joselito, but I was here for the main menu today.

The décor is clean and modern, with wooden floor, plain white walls with some original art, low-backed chairs, hanging filament lighting and a view into the kitchen. There was also a prep kitchen downstairs, and there was a large brigade of 22 chefs working in the two kitchens, for a restaurant serving around 70 covers at lunch and 90 in the evening. Starters were priced at £8.50 - £11.50, mains at £19.50 - £30 and desserts £7 - £8. You can construct a tasting menu of your choosing from a mix of these (with cut-down versions of the main courses) or just go with a conventional three course approach. There was also a lunch menu available at £23.50 for three courses.

The wine list stretched to 500 wines, and had selections such as Chevrot Pinot Noir 2009 at £43 for a wine that costs £14 retail, Trimbach Cuvee Frederich Emile 2004 at £99 for a wine that you can pick up in the shops for £31 and Chateau Talbot 1988 at £210 compared to a retail price of £65. The prestige wines were hardly bargains: Chateau Mouton Rothschile 1985 was £1,150 for a wine that can be bought for £303, and Romanee Conti Eschezaux 1986 was £1,550 for a wine you can pick up for £397, but perhaps if you can afford wines like this then price is not the main issue. We drank the refreshing Bott Geyl Metiss 2007 at £36 for a wine that retails at around £11 – an excellent suggestion from the sommelier, who directed us away from my initial choice given our selection dishes to a cheaper wine; how often does that happen? Bread was a choice of white or brown sourdough and was (hurrah) made from scratch in the kitchen; it had excellent texture and flavour, in particular the brown sourdough (17/20).

Smoked foie gras had smooth texture, the smoking giving a less rich effect than with a conventional terrine, while the black sesame puree on the side had enough depth to easily stand up to the foie gras, the dish garnished with smoked golden raisins (16/20). Barbecued mackerel was served with cucumber chutney, frozen ajo blanco (white gazpacho made with almonds) and scallops. I found this the least good dish of the meal; the cucumber chutney worked well, but while the scallops correctly cooked but rather lukewarm by the time they were plate, and the mackerel lacked the distinct flavour you get with the very best, freshest specimens (14/20).

Lightly cured loch Duart salmon was prettily presented, with avocado and smoked herring roe cream; the salmon itself had good flavour and worked well with the little blobs of avocado cream and the stronger taste of the herring roe (16/20). Full English breakfast consisted of a slow cooked egg resting on a base of small pieces of fried bread mixed with puree of tomato and slivers of bacon, with some lovely morel mushrooms to add an earthy note: this was a hearty, comforting and thorough enjoyable dish (16/20).

My favourite dish was the halibut, garnished with sprouting broccoli, pork ham fat and served with mussel stock; on the side paella was served in a copper pot. The star for me here was the halibut itself, having very good flavour and being beautifully cooked, the other elements adding some richness and complexity without detracting from the main dish component (17/20). Cotswold lamb sirloin was served with braised belly, pea salad and sheep’s milk curd, the lamb carefully cooked and working nicely with the pea salad and the restrained milk curd, which mainly left the lamb to speak for itself (16/20).

We did not try the cheese today, but it is supplied from Fromagerie. A pre-dessert of Eton mess had a few wild strawberries as well as the usual variety, and it was the wild ones that really put some flavour into the dish, whose meringue was skilfully made, light and airy: a refreshing dish (17/20). PBJ parfait was a series of rice puffs, dots of cherry jam and some fresh summer fruit; the fruit was of good quality and the cherry jam had nice depth of flavour, the intensity contrasting well with the light rice puffs (16/20). Vanilla cheescake had an excellent base, decorated with rhubarb that had been carefully prepared so as not to be too acidic, flavoured with ginger and offered with rhubarb sorbet and nut crumble (16/20).

Service was extremely good throughout the meal, with a knowledgeable sommelier who used to work at Maze. This was a very enjoyable meal, with a lot of skill having gone into the dishes but done in such a way as not to feel over-worked with too many elements. While the restaurant is still in its early days it is already operating very smoothly, with virtually no technical issues. It was completely full on this weekday lunch. The bill came to £88 a head, and prices here which seem to me reasonable given the quality of the cooking.

Whether you’re a lover or a hater, you cannot deny that Gordon Ramsay has influenced some of the finest British chefs around. Without Ramsay there’d be no Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley, neither Angela Hartnett’s Murano, nor Jason Atherton’s Pollen Street Social. Now, however, each chef has left the Ramsay nest, and seems much the better for it. They’ve realised that the old dog has given up on the new tricks, and it’s time for them to shine. And indeed they do. This week there are no quips, no jibes, and no cynicism. Pollen Street Social is my favourite restaurant in London. Well, probably.

Don’t be fooled. It’s not a working men’s club. But it might just be the modern equivalent. Five years after Atherton successfully took the helm at Maze, he packed everything up (including most of his staff, it seems) and opened his own restaurant barely a stone’s throw from Regent Street. It’s not a hush-hush Ramsay Mayfair spin-off, as it could so easily be. In fact, Gordon could learn a thing or two. It’s glamorous, but at the same time relaxed. The restaurant revolves around two spacious rooms. The first, a reception area and bar. The second, a more formal dining room. An enormous glass panel fronts the whole side of the building, etched on it the restaurant’s name and logo. Everything is as highly polished as the restaurant’s exterior. Particular kudos to bar manager, Gareth Evans, not only for an excellent Eastside Julep (£12.50) (Bombay Sapphire, vermouth, lemon, elderflower, mint), but also friendly conversation and very personal attention to detail*.

Atherton’s stint at El Bulli in 1998 means that you can expect playful, but precisely executed cooking (as well as high, but not unreasonable prices). Indeed, each of the starters has a creative bent: roasted quail “brunch”, cereals, toast and tea (£13.50) saw the bird atop pearl barley with a mini scotch egg, as well as beautifully smooth duck liver parfait and brioche. ‘Tea’ came in the form of a duck and mint consommé. Slow cooked egg, full English breakfast (£12.50) was simpler, but no less brilliant. A runny egg nestled under wafer-thin bacon strips, girolles, croutons and (an overly-sweet – we’ll forgive him) tomato purée. The mains read more conventionally. We chose rack of salt marsh lamb, braised shoulder, creamed spiced aubergine, savoury & black olive reduction (£27.50) and West Country ox cheek with tongue and sirloin, carrots, caper & raisin puree, horseradish (£25.50). Nothing fancy, no deconstruction, but accurately presented, flavoursome dishes. I could have eaten any. Unfortunately, we had no room for desserts at their famous dessert bar, but that’s what next time’s for.

Wines by the glass start at £7.50, with bottles coming in at £24 and sharply rising. I enjoyed Head Sommelier Laure Patry’s recommendation of two very different glasses of red: Spätburgunder, Friedrich Becker, Pfalz, 2010 (£10.50) and Moss Wood Pinot Noir, Mornington Peninsula, 2009 (£12.50). One ever so slight criticism: the French staff need to speak up in order for diners to have any chance hearing what they’ve said. Aside from this, service was attentive, friendly and precise.

Since giving-up the initial tasting-menu-come-tapas approach, the restaurant seems to have fared a lot better. The press has been kinder, and reservations don’t come easy. We’re not talking Dabbous madness, but you’ll certainly have to wait a few months to eat on a Saturday evening. Instead, you might fare better trying your luck on a weekday lunchtime. The three course lunch menu for £27.50 is a godsend, especially considering the cheapest of the carte mains will set you back just under this. All in all, Pollen Street Social will be special, whether you go for a drink, a business lunch, a romantic evening, or even if you dine alone. I hope you’ve been listening, Gordon…

(*Gareth had overheard we were celebrating a birthday, and ensured the kitchen had made an extra little surprise for us to take home.)

Pollen Street is a foodies joint. Started by Jason Atherton, a super chef and former Gordon Ramsay protege, I was unsurprisingly very impressed with his creativity and passion to think outside the culinary box. He likes to break tradition, mix new flavours and impress the palate - I'm all for that but I also like a certain type of restaurant to match with it. The atmosphere was very simple and sophisticated, but lacking a little spark. Definitely worth going for a special occasion or culinary delight, but I didn't love the whole experience. Very good though!

Choosing a meal for a special occasion is always precarious one, and one that is tinged with a lot of responsibility. Recently for my Mum's birthday I wanted somewhere that was classy, great food, while still being reasonable value. After spending ages looking at set menus for different places and looking up reviews I chose Pollen Street Social and their set menu at only £29.50 for 3 courses.
Pollen Street Social is on a small side road just off busy Regent's street that you otherwise would never have known about. The attention to detail and service here is phenomenal, they even have a little stool to put next to your table for your bags to go on.
Sometimes having the set menu isn't that great, but the meal was still exceptional. I went for a porc de tete terrine with black pudding and crispy pig ears, a wonderful start the terrine which could have been very heavy was broken up by regions of pate and figs.
For mains I had the roast hake with pistachio powder, the rest of the group went for the deer and beetroot. My only bad choice, the fish was slightly dry with the red wine sauce not bringing together the dish very well. The deer that I tried was outstanding, I so wished I ahd got this.
For dessert I had a 'Tiramisu with mascapone, basically a deconstructed tiramisu with indulgent hot chocolate sauce. This was fantastic.
Overall, a truly brilliant meal, service was great without being too over attentive and everyone left happy, and rather full.

In my experience vegetarian options (even at high end restaurants) are often bland and boring. However this was not the case at Pollen street social. I ordered from the 3 course vegetarian menu and my food was delicious, full of flavour and beautifully presented. I will definitely return as I would like to try the vegetarian tasting menu next.

It’s a Michelin restaurant , and it did not disappoint . The sommelier Johnason so deserving his gold grape pin on his lapel, I gave him a price range and our food choices for recommendation of a white wine , without hesitation he came up with 4 different grape types from different continents, and gave each wine a brief and precise descriptions of their characteristics , we are very pleased with the Pinot blanc from Alsace . But don’t go look for Johnason on your next visit , you can find him at London Four seasons. The highlight of the amazing set lunch is the desert , it’s so heavenly ,I thought I’m in heaven , I had to thank the patissier in person , shame I did not get the name of the desert , dear PSS Admin , if you’re reading this , can you pls give me the name of the desert. Thank you in advance .

This is our 5th time visiting Pollen Street Social, it never fails to deliver, starting with cocktails made by the very fabulous Spike , he has such knowledge and passion about cocktail making its contagious. Our food was sublime and service impeccable, we asked for recommendations on the wine to go with each dish, each was on point! Even finding a red to go with my bream. Highly recommend and will be going again.

I visited as a solo diner on a busy Saturday afternoon for the three-course lunch (note: if you want amuse bouche and petit fours, you'll need to opt for the extended lunch menu, otherwise bread is the only extra). I paid the supplement fee for the shellfish raviolo, which is absolutely worth doing. The bisque was intensely flavoured, while the mushrooms, lobster, parmesan foam, and caviar provided extra texture and dimensions. One small critique: it was a little overseasoned (lots of salty elements on one plate), but otherwise, this was brilliant. The lamb for the main was beautifully tender, the sauce rich, the basil puree fragrant and complimenting the protein nicely. The pomme puree was also silky, smooth, and had just the right amount to go with the meat on the plate. The dessert was not as good as the savoury courses but still very nice: a pink peppercorn Panna cotta, with perfect texture and strawberries. The pink peppercorn was an interesting touch and it really came through with each mouthful, just the right amount. The strawberries themselves were so-so and were a bit of a bland addition to an otherwise very enjoyable dessert. £49.50 for three courses is very reasonable (pre-supplement) for the level of cooking here. Service was friendly and professional, while the setting is smart but casual. Based on the quality of the starter and main, I wouldn't be surprised if they get a second star before long.

This was a great experience. The service from all staff was something special. We did the £75 Chef Experience and it was well worth it. You get to try some pretty special food.

Knock out food and great drinks with absolutely brilliant service, friendly and professional. And the big man himself was at the pass! Absolutely loved it. Actually forgot to take pictures of our mains as we dove straight in! 😂

Really great place and throughly enjoyed the extended set lunch menu. Service was exceptional until after our desserts. The table was not cleared for 30 minutes after dessert, the coffee didn’t arrive with the petit fours, but 10 minutes after and no one came to our table to check on us. It did feel like once the set menu was over, there was no need for the staff to attend our table. Our ask for the bill took over 25 minutes (despite requesting it multiple times) and resulted in it arriving with someone thrusting a card machine in my face. The ending really was a disappointment and our ask to share the above feedback with manager was met with an “ok”.

We were lucky enough to eat in the private dining room. The whole service was very well choreographed and the food was absolutely delicious. Very delicate but undeniable flavours. Hoping to return one day to see how well this restaurant has developed. If you get the chance to experience this place grab it with both hands!

Amazing food! Brilliant service, we were treated like royalty. I went there for my best friend’s birthday and I had the vegetarian tasting menu with the wine pairing. You don’t often get fine dining restaurants that cater to veggies but this one did and exceeded my expectations, well deserves its Michelin star. Will be visiting again. Thank you to the chef and the whole team for giving us an unforgettable day and making everything so special for my closest friend’s 25th birthday celebration.

I had a fantastic lunch at the Pollen Street Social restaurant recently. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and the service was excellent. The food was simply delicious and each dish was artistically presented. The staff were very knowledgeable about the ingredients and flavors used in the food, and were able to accommodate my dietary preferences. I appreciate how they go out of their way to make the dining experience enjoyable. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a unique and delicious dining experience.

Lovely restaurant with incredibly delicious food. Jason Atherton has made a stand to make fine dining more affordable to Londoners and the lunch set menu at ~£50 per person for a 3 course meal is very good value for money. We had to wait about 20 mins for our table to be ready on a busy Saturday lunch service but aside from that the whole experience was great. Definitely recommend and we will be visiting again.

While being at lunch I texted my best friend (also a regular patron):“I wouldn’t know how a restaurant could be any better.”PSS checks all the boxes. Every time. I’m from out of town (and country) but make an effort to visit every time, I’m in the UK. Can’t wait to come back. Thanks!

We have nothing but wonderful things to say about Pollen Street Social. The space is elegant, modern, and comfortable. The cocktails were perfectly made. The service was stellar. And the food exceeded expectations. Ingredients, flavors, presentations…all fabulous. I highly recommend Pollen Street Social when you want a lovely dinner out.

Just fantastic. We dined here today for my husband’s 40th birthday and the staff were so incredibly nice and made him feel special and really helped to make his birthday. The food was lush and we were absolutely stuffed by the end of it, which made it feel like great value. Highly recommended.

Best lunch this year. Professional, knowledgeable service but not to formal. We had the set lunch but that came with nibbles, pre desert and petit fours, all excellent. Difficult to pick a favourite dish although the seafood raviolo was amazing. Couldn’t fault this lunch, will return again next year. Great value, high end food
