All the dishes were so good and perfectly executed. We also loved that each dish was quite unique and stylistically different from other (french) fine dining places we are used to. Our favorite dishes were oxtopus starter and pigeon main dish as well as the pineapple dessert!

The service was friendly and attentive. Would love to come again.

It’s been a month and I still can’t stop thinking of our lunch here .
It’s a must must try!!
Having seen Heston on masterchef AU , it was our dream to go and get a bite at his restaurant while we were in London.
The restaurant is located right opposite Hyde Park and you get the view of the gorgeous green park while ur dining. We were for lunch and decided to order some of the favorites .
The meat fruit - now I have never have chicken liver parfait before but after trying this I’m such a huge fan. Delicious , smooth , full of flavour and I just couldn’t stop eating it.
Tomato salamagundy - if your a cheese : burrata lover you will totally fall in love with this fish. It’s fresh , it’s full of summer and it was flawless.
Lamb and mint cucumber - beautiful melt in your mouth lamb and the fresh mint - a match made in heaven.
Coconut panacotta with coffee parfait- just order it, don’t even think twice. The presentation just gorgeous and the silky smooth pannacotta inside just takes you to another planet for a few moments .
Also ordered the vanilla cake with goats milk ice cream which was wonderful.
The ice cream trolley at the end was an extremely sweet gesture by the team.
It’s great value for money and it an experience you’ll never forget.
So glad we could get a booking and try this place out.

Wow, what can I say that hasn't already been said. Everything was impeccable. The food was incredible, service was flawless, ambience was warm and cozy. Even though it's a posh restaurant in a really fancy hotel they made us feel very welcome and relaxed. Can't recommend highly enough.

Great ambiance, delicious food and lovely service!

Tried their famous meat fruit and I can now say it rightly deserves the attention it gets. Porridge was a great blend with red wine. I was there with a friend who loved their chopped pork. Ambiance is classy but not overly fancied for the good. They deserve appreciation for Nitro ice cream for the best innovation😄

Really recommend this place! We did not get reservation at The Fat Duck so we decided to give this place  a try. Booked it almost a month in advanced but we still got the reservation at 9PM. My parents almost wanted me to cancel the reservation since they were still jet lagged. Anyway, foods were soo tasty! Love the pate, pork chop and the turbot! For dessert, we opted for tipsy cake, it was amazing! Brown bread ice cream was so good too! MUST TRY

A few months ago, during my European travels in December and January, I was fortunate enough to visit Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in London. This two Michelin Star restaurant, situated in Knightsbridge, is any foodie’s dream to visit. My benedict and I arrived at The Mandarin Oriental. It’s large double doors, exquisite entrance hall and enchanting spiral staircase definitely set the tone for one of the top fine dining experiences. We were directed to the restaurant and greeted by the front host who offered to hang up our heavy winter coats. We were then seated at a table across from the open plan kitchen before being offered some wine by the sommelier. Having eyed out the restaurant’s Instagram page, my benedict had already decided on the “Meat Fruit” starter. This was a spiced red wine, chicken liver parfait served with grilled bread. The smooth red appearance of the chicken liver parfait gives rise to its name, giving it a fresh, juicy, fruit like look. It’s quite uncanny actually. The starter tasted great too. I opted for the “Sherried Scallop” starter. This was scallop tartare served with grilled shiitake in a sherry mushroom broth. It was delicious! The broth was rich in flavour and ever so tasty. Really enjoyed this starter. For my main meal I had the Fillet of Hereford Beef. This was served with a side of the most interesting and unusual mushroom ketchup and Heston’s famous triple cooked chips. My meal was absolute perfection! The fillet was tender, perfectly cooked (obviously), juicy and delicious. The potato chips were amazing; well-seasoned, cooked throughout and had that perfect exterior crunchiness. I loved the mushroom ketchup too. It was so unique, yet tasted great! My benedict chose the Powdered Duck for his main. This was braised duck breast served with grilled red cabbage and pickled cherries. Just another fantastic dish from Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. For dessert I selected the Gingerbread Ice Cream. This was mulled wine poached pear with salted caramel and smoked walnut mousse. It was a rather bitter dessert and while it was really good, it was perhaps not something quite suited to my sweet tooth.

What it's like to have Dinner's famous Meat Fruit... We were there over Christmas Eve and the colour of the meat fruit is different! Red wine jelly instead of the usual mandarin orange jelly!. Frumenty (£21.50). The overly huge piece of ribeye. Braised Celery (£32). Tipsy Cake (£16). This is the perfect ending - very balanced amount of alcohol and sugar to keep you sane. Have it with the roasted pineapple and the sourness will overrule the sugar.

Where do I start?! The ambience was mind blowing.. the fragrant aroma of food in the hallway.. thinking about it makes you hungry. The service, the food, the taste and the right texture.,the list keeps going on and on and on..No wonder this place has 3 Michelin stars to its name. If you are a foodie this has to be in your to-do-list when in London..can’t wait for a round 2. 🍽 😋

It is amazing to watch a busy kitchen in a Saturday dinner. Better when we where at Heston Blumenthal restaurant, Dinner, in the center of London, a one star michelin star awarded. Although the gourmet courses do not have all the crazy side of Heston, it is possible to have a taste of it and watch at the end the preparation at the table of an ice cream with liquid nitrogen. Must have the pineapple pudding at the end, a one hour preparation dessert.

The meat fruit and the tipsy cake are the highlights of Dinner by Heston. We were actually filled after the meat fruit as it was quite heavy and a massive portion for an entree. The mains were okay but nothing too special and a bit too rich in flavour. Tipsy cake was quite heavy as well so came out in a food coma but satisfied!

I went to Dinner last month with four colleagues and our expectations were high, we all work in a kitchen as well so we were quite excited about this experience.

The service was really good. Fast and efficient with the waiters and sommelier always giving us the attention we needed and giving good recommendations about the wine . We all had a glass of Bolllinger rose that was really good.

Everyone on the table liked their food .
I had the meat fruit for starter then the pork chop and the sambocade for dessert. The chicken liver parfait flavour and consistency mixed with the grilled bread on the meat fruit was amazing . The pork chop was perfectly cooked and I don’t think you can much better quality on pork meat than that . The garnish was also really good. The sambocade was a good dessert without being to sweet .

It was quite an experience to have dinner at my favourite chef's restaurant.
Elegant but not overpowering ambience.
It is a 100 seater restaurant and they do about 170 for dinner and about same for lunch.
Initially the start of service albeit slow but picked up as the evening went on.
The meat fruit was the star of the show.
The steak perfectly done
The cucumber hearts very tangy and played tango in mouth with the acidity .
Oh the lamb saddle had pink meat and was succulent and juicy .
The nitro ice cream gimmicky was the only thing that was modern and brought out the children in us adults
The slow service at the outset actually disturbed couple of members of our party .

Back when I first started writing about food, I do remember that many a quizzical eyebrow were raised.
There was perceived to be something rather paradoxical about the notion of a vegetarian epicure. Spot on for noticing my use of the past tense. Critics might have only marginally softened their patronising or unforgiving stance against my lot, but more importantly, there is now much more than meats the eye at even the restaurants renowned for championing an abundance of flesh.

Case in point: Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, the two Michelin-starred restaurant synonymous with iconic dishes such as Meat Fruit and Rice and Flesh. Yet as our party of six recently experienced, it caters more than adequately for veggies too – especially if you let them know of your disposition in advance (as we did)…

Next, we shared the Meat Fruit (c.1500). Chicken liver parfait was enrobed in a jelly and shaped to look like a mandarin, and served grilled bread. This artful presentation was so elegant and paired expertly with the red wine we chose - a French Bordeaux. This was probably the best version of chicken liver mousse that we've ever had. The only criticism is that the stem was not edible.

If ever there was a contrast between the old culinary world and the new, this was it.  Lunch was at a brash up and coming restaurant in a cool part of town; dinner was at a 5 star hotel in the heart of London.  More so, it was at a restaurant credited with reinventing historical British dishes and giving them the Heston Blumenthal treatment.

Booked a table through OpenTable and was able to be seated 10min earlier than expected. The menu set lunch was chosen for two, with a sharing experience in mind. That being, both starters and main dishes were eaten along with the best two looking desserts out of three. In a few words, this was the best meal of my life, starting with the anchovies, the pork belly or the rare salmon, ending in a peach flavoured ice cream with amazing things on the side.

My growing fascination with medieval history lead me to explore medieval cuisine. Food has always been a defining element of any culture and our culinary culture reflects our history and identity.  What fascinates me even more is learning what people ate at that time and that gives us a deeper understanding on how they lived.  Heston Blumenthal, one of the rock stars of the culinary world explores the medieval era for recipes and magically transforms them into something different and mind-boggling. Like his most famous dish the "Meat fruit", a surprise chicken liver parfait coated in orange fruit jelly. It is velvety light but rich and exquisitely good. Definitely the highlight of our meal.  So here it is, the magnificent medieval dishes we had during our visit.  Eat your history.

I was looking forward to eat at Dinner for over a month. I put this on my London itinerary then. I'll dive straight into my experience:
The staff:
Everyone at the Mandarin Oriental, from the red jacket bellhop, the black suit concierge to the restaurant staff were courteous and delightful to have my sister and me there.
The staff at the restaurant were helpful, polite and patient explaining every dish. The sommelier helped me pair my wine and food.
The food:
I had ordered dishes from the a la carte, whereas my sister went with the set lunch menu. The starter- meat fruit, was my favourite. A chicken liver parfait disguised as a mandarin (gotta love Heston).
The staff let us into the pass and in the kitchen, showed us around, explained how the dishes were made and promptly answered all the questions I had about the food or about Heston.
Thanks guys! Was an amazing experience.

It was our Son's 16th birthday and he exclaimed "lets go for Molecular Gastronomy" which certainly got me quizzed. How did he know so much....! The Fat Duck wasn't open and we decided another creation from the famous chef Heston Blumenthal. Set within the Mandarin Oriental, The ambience did not disappoint nor did the service. We all picked our individual favorites of starters and Mains. The experience begins with the Menu (A2 size) neatly folded and held together with paper strap scribed with an interesting fact from the centuries past. The cuisine itself, inspired from the bygone era of circa 14 century to the 18th Century was modern in all respects. Although not exactly a Molecular Gastronomy they were executed to perfection. The Meat Fruit and Rice & Flesh starters stood out, whilst the Brown Bread Ice cream and Tipsy cake were exceptional. For the finale like most 16year old's he insisted on the hand churned ice cream with Liquid nitrogen...!

Nestled within the Mandarin Oriental is Dinner by Heston. The dining room is marvelous, greeted by a display of the wine selection and views of Hyde park.

I had the 3 course menu, consisting of meat fruit as starter, powdered duck breat for main and brown bread ice cream for dessert. When the meat fruit came, I was delighted as it was so perfectly shaped like a mandarin. The exterior is a mandarin jelly and in the interior is chicken liver parfait. I loved every bit of it as it was light and not too overpowering in taste and elevated by the tinge of mandarin. When it arrived, there was small bits of perspiration on the surface, almost like the mandarin had been plucked out of a tree. Incredibly lifelike! My only comment was the accompanying bread was a bit tough.

For mains, the powdered duck breast came with a layer of perfectly seared skin and was cooked to perfection with a pink tinge. Loved the pairing with beetroot sauce as there was a slight sweetness to this. I was unable to really taste the umbles and thought this could be done away with.

Dessert was brown bread ice-cream. I imagine this is Hestons twist on bread and butter pudding. This was a salted caramel ice cream with a biscuit base and pear. Salted caramel can never go wrong and pears brilliantly with the warm pear chunks. I think I would have liked this to be more crumbly in texture but no other complaints. I also stole a slice of my friends other desserts, taffety tart and tipsy cake. The taffety tart had a great crunch to it and classic flavours. The tipsy cake appeared to be soaked in rum down the bottom and was warm and comforting.

Just before we left, we were given a wafer with chocolate mousse and it was a perfect end to the courses. Definitely one of my highlights dining in London and proof of why Heston is a brilliant chef.

I had promised myself a treat at this place on my last visit to London. It is said that too much expectation disappoints and with many of the recommendations turning out to be less than satisfying, did not know how this would turn out to be.

But this is Heston's place and my instinct told me that whatever the experience, my wallet would certainly pay a price. Well, convincing myself that even if it meant going C&C post this meal then so be it. I had to get a taste of what the Grand Master of Chefs had to offer. After all, much of my own cooking style has been inspired by him.

It looks and feels elegant. Fine dining be it lunch or dinner. Selected the GBP 40pp 3 course lunch menu. I asked for regular water and was not looked down upon as a misfit. Filtered and not tap water was served with a smile.

The waiting staff handles you like it would royalty. Made me feel comfortable and offered information on any item on the menu. There are even stories on what is the inspiration behind each of the creations for they cannot be classified as mere preparations.

The lemon salad; roasted artichokes with baby radish, goat cheese, greens with a lemon dressing was divine. The Meat Fruit, the culinary equivalent of nirvana. I was told it takes 3 days to prepare and 19,000 were served last year alone. The Crispy Pork Belly, art on plate and magic on the tongue. This restaurant was on its way to hit my first 5.

Spoke too soon. The dessert - the chocolate cake looked great but failed to excite. It was good but not great. It did not leave me speechless like the others. Thankfully the chocolate ganache served as a "thank you" to all guests at the time of paying the bill pulled it up for dream dessert.

I want to award DINNER with a 4.9 but the rating system does not allow it.

I left the place thinking that for a mere 10 quid pp more than the average check I was getting used to forking out, I got one of the best culinary experiences. My salute to Heston's team for it.

4 friends turning age at the similar time so we decided to lash it out by going to Dinner by Heston. I made the booking a good 3 months in advance and made them aware of the occasion and the got a little extra biscuit chocolates thing for each, which was sweet and a trip to the kitchen!

We didn't go for the tasting menu but ordered from a la carte.

For starter I had the scallop which was cooked to perfection, refreshing and light, laying the way for the duck course, which was cooked slightly rare for my liking, but the combination of flavour was still on point.

The tipsy cake cooked in 5 types of alcohol and a pit roasted pineapple is my favourite thanks to my love of alcohol and pineapple! What a way to end the meal, oh wait I actually spent another 3 (or 6) quid on ice cream, which they made using liquid nitrogen at the table with popping candy. Very fun.

We also got taken round the kitchen to see where all the actions happening. I personally think this is better than having the chefs table as I like quiet and relaxing dining!!

Ambience and atmos are nice, good for special occasion.

We paid around 140 each with service, 3 courses meals, 1 cocktails, 2 glasses of wine, coffee and ice cream. Bargain I said or London has skewed my sense of prices 😬??

I can’t believe it has taken me this long to visit Dinner. Part of the problem is that obtaining a reservation (on short notice) is tricky, in no part due to the restaurant being listed on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. The other reason is that it is easier for me to get to Bray (also known as Heston land) where I have the choice of dining at the Crown, the Hind’s Head or the Fat Duck. If I wanted the whole Heston experience, the Fat Duck was the only option while if I wanted something casual I could just as easily go to the Hind’s Head. Dinner sits somewhere in between casual and fine dining. After all it was opened with the concept of what it would be like if Heston would open a Bistro. You have formal, fine-dining service but at the same time you are still able to order a ‘simple’ plate of steak and chips. However, after many years of ‘not bothering’, we decided to pop in one Sunday afternoon for a lazy lunch.

Lunch at "Dinner by Heston Blumenthal”

We decide to experience the brilliant Heston food in London at ‘Dinner by Heston Blumenthal’, Mandarin Oriental. Just overlooking Hype Park it’s a great place to have a meal. With the sun shining in London, it couldn't have been a better day.

Heston Blumenthal is the mad scientist of the culinary world, coming up with out of the world ideas. He always comes up with weird food dishes that will really amuse you, confuse you and at the same time are freaking delicious! He is a magician and an artist with food. He makes you believe what you see is not what you taste.

To book a table at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal you can use their Open table widget on their website. Though keep in mind you need a debit/credit card as you have to provide them with the details of your card incase you cancel at the last minute.

We had our reservation on Saturday and thus couldn't go with the set course as that is only offered from Mon - Fri. So we went with the Ala Carte menu. The menu is filled with a variety of different dishes and some unusual things, just the way Heston would have wanted it to be. The menu is inspired by historic British gastronomy with a futuristic touch.

We guess we should start telling you what we ate now, before you stop reading!

So for the starters we had :

Salamagundy (c.1720) made of Chicken oysters, salsify, marrow bone & horseradish cream.

Earl Grey Tea cured Salmon (c.1730) made of Lemon salad, gentleman’s relish, wood sorrel & smoked roe.

Frumenty (c.1390) made of Grilled octopus, smoked sea broth, pickled dulse & lovage.

All the dishes looked stunning and had some kind of symmetry going on. They tasted so delicious that we wish we could have licked the plates clean. Oysters were our favourite but just by a tad and we would have been happy with any of them without a thought.

For the mains we decided to share a Powdered Duck Breast (c.1670) made of Smoked confit fennel, spiced beetroot & umbles.

Though we ordered only 1 main it was great for the restaurant to divide it into 2 plates so we didn't have to fight for the last bite. The beetroot puree was so rich and tasty it went perfectly with the duck, just like a match made in heaven!

It finally was time for dessert and we ordered a Spring Tart made of Gariguette strawberries, rose, lovage and basil yoghurt and goats milk ice cream.

The basil yogurt was something we had never tried before and was quite good. The dessert looked immaculate and we managed to scrape ever last bit and some more.

Though the portions look small, they pack quite a punch. A 3 course meal is filling though you may still have some space left, however, the beauty of the experience is absolutely satisfying. But keep in mind it will make a significant hole in your pocket at the end ( Totally worth it! )

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal is officially the best food we have eaten till now and we hope to visit them again soon to try out their set course menu.

An amazing dinner experience - highlighted by the fantastic food and service. My partner and I got the cow's tail and pate fruit. They were a good start to the meal. Next was pork chop and steak. The pork chop was melt in your mouth. However my partner has had better steaks for less. This is not to say that the steak wasn't fantastic. The dessert made up for it though. Word of advice, do not skip the dessert. I repeat, do not skip the dessert. It was the highlight of not only this meal, but of my culinary journey. Overall, this is an experience that cannot be missed.

One of the most impressive (and expensive) meals in London so far. The menu is inspired by historical British recipes, but cooked with the latest food tools & techniques. Everything has amazing flavour, texture, and presented beautifully.

MUST TRY: meat fruit (liver pâté disguised as a fruit, so clever) for starter. Tipsy cake (fluffy rich brioche soaked in boozy custard. OMG) for dessert.

Bearing in mind the price tag, it's definitely an experience. The venue is gorgeous, the service is faultless, and the food amazing.

As we normally only visit London once a year on a restaurant trip, it takes me some time to decide on which of the hundreds of fine places we should eat. Sunday lunch was proving a tough choice, especially after the previous epic day of eating at both Hedone and Aulis. It may seem a 'safe' decision but whilst Dinner may not be the latest place to go, I chose it simply because I thought the sheer quality of the dishes would shine through. They truly did, it was a wonderful lunch, excellent service in  a beautiful room overlooking Hyde Park, and completely faultless food. The signature dishes of Meat Fruit (which I've always wanted to try) and the Tipsy Cake were real highlights.

I decided to try dinner by heston for a join birthday celebration with my best friends and it didn't disappoint! Food was excellent, everything cooked to perfection and a lot of thought has gone into preparing each dish. My favourite has to be the salamagundy starter with quail meat (special for that night), bone marrow and salad leaves. Service was excellent, all the food recommended was great and we even got a chance to see the kitchen up close and personal! Definitely a place to try when you have special occasion as it does come with a heavier price tag.

Also the nitro ice cream is something beyond real, not for the taste exactly but for all the environment created around the table, the history that the waitress tells while serving you and the fact that everyone looks at you and to your table...

For our special meal out in London in December 2014, we had the 3-course lunch special with matching wines, and an extra order of the meat fruit. The meat fruit was a standout as was the millionaire's slice, which looked so simple but was a perfect combination of chocolate and caramel and an olive oil base.

Other than those, we thought the food was great, but somewhat understated, it didn't blow us away, like the service did (superb, combining warmth with efficiency) and the setting (stunning). As you'd see from my reviews, I'm rather generous in them, but even if retrospect, this meal didn't sing like I expected it too, considering the reputation, the price and the many positive reviews.

London is pretty expensive at the moment for travellers, so it also seemed rather expensive, considering we had the cheapest option on the menu. Still, as the one special meal we treated ourselves to this trip, we were happy enough with the experience.

There’s little else that can be said about Heston Blumenthal, other than he’s the man who in one lifetime has created snail porridge, the hidden orange Waitrose Christmas Pudding, and reconstructed Hansel and Gretel’s sweet house. With this place in food history, he can forgiven for rarely turning up to actually cook in his kitchen and for swanning off to Australia along with his fat duck for the last 6 months. Everyone is familiar with his brand of cooking and with his beaming bald head plastered on an increasing number of goods in our shopping aisles, which is probably why getting a seat in one of his restaurants is like trying to recreate one of his dishes at home. But, now that Dinner has been open for 4 years and there are hotter seats in town, the long waiting lists have eased off and you can get your arse on a seat within a month.

He immediately got us veggie versions of their signature dishes 'Rice & Flesh' (sans flesh) and 'Snail Porridge' (sans snail). Rightly so, the meal itself (delicious as it was), was sans Soul. Yes, we're vegetarians, we're used to being given the poor-cousin treatment. But Iggy's (Singapore) brought out the Oliver Twist in us a few years ago (not only do they have vegetarian options, they have a spectacular vegetarian set lunch/dinner menu, which they've put together with as much love and seriousness as the regular one), and we kind of won't settle for sloppy seconds now. Hence, the 3.5. We love you to death Heston, but...

Being an ardent fan of Masterchef, this was high on my priority list on my visit to London. The fact that there are separate servers for wine, other alcohol and food only goes on to prove the attention to details. Ordered the Meat Fruit to begin with - an absolute clever dish. For the main course, we ordered the Fillet of Aberdeen Angus and the Duck Breast - by far, the best protein we have  had. Given the reviews around Tipsy cake, had to relish that. An interesting feature in the restaurant is the way the history behind every dish is explained in details. @Gaurav Anand

I'll have to admit the meat fruit drew me in, but after eating all the courses, it was the least impressive dish on the menu. Not because it wasn't up to the mark, but that's how amazing the rest of the food was.

The Salmagundi (chicken oysters) were the highlight of the meal and the dish is a must-order for any red meat eater who thinks chicken isn't for them. The Cod in Cider sits on the most beautiful broth with onions caramelised to perfection and is so flaky good!

The meat fruit deserves a mention only because it's most obviously the best liver parfait I've eaten in my entire life. I thought the orange flavour would be quite annoyingly overpowering, not this subtle and smooth. It was a beautiful sight, that looked even more spectacular once eaten.

What I regret is, skipping dessert and not getting to sample the Tipsy Cake. The Nitrogen ice-cream cart however, made up for this!

Loved the connectivity and ease with which we found the restaurant, and the service was impeccable. Special mention to the sommelier who suggested the Sauvignon of the day. Made my meal a tad bit sweeter x

Classic, contemporary food yet so creatively produced and executed. The processes are surprising and flavours so exciting. The wine list is classic yet in true Heston style boasts some delicious but more quirky wines. The service was brilliant.

Came here with high expectations but was let down. Food didn't live up to the number 5 restaurant in the world title - just regular modern cuisine. Meat fruit was creative but at best it was just a pate. The other memorable dish was the brown bread ice-cream, which tasted interesting but I wouldn't order again. There are certainly better restaurants out there offereing the same quality of food for much less money. Service on the other hand was great, but we were served by at least four different people, which was a little too much and confusing.

Missed! My stand out was my delicious litchi martini cocktail along with the starter of fois gras! Almost too beautiful to eat! Works of art. The ice cream dessert, served at your table is quite the show!

I’m writing this while eating a Chinese buffet in Rotherhithe, a complete contrast, but the thrill of occasionally eating unnatural and detrimental comfort food is too good.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal opened in 2011 and is an investigation into 600 years of Britain’s culinary heritage. It is also a restaurant I’d wanted to try since moving to London two years ago, partly because of it’s accreditation in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, but also because of the glamourous hype of its unique signature dishes. The iconic culinary meat fruit had been regularly appearing on my Twitter and Instagram feeds, and always slightly annoyed me because I hadn’t tried it. Dinner’s menu apparently took immense research, with Blumenthal and Head Chef Ashley Palmer-Watts spending hours in the British Library reading up on 20th Century cook books and manuscripts to find lost recipes and bring them back to 21st Century life.

My visit to Dinner followed the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards at the Guildhall (S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna are the sponsors and are a client of my work). The most perfect choice in London. Why? Because Dinner had that night achieved seventh spot – the highest of any British restaurant. Warmly greeted by Palmer-Watts: two colleagues, four journalists and I embarked on a splendid evening of gastronomic triumph. The journalists were all food writers so their understanding of good food was the perfect match for Dinner. Journalists included: Tony Turnbull, Food Editor at The Times, Barney Desmazery, Food Editor at BBC Good Food, Natalie Hardwick, Senior Writer at BBC Good Food and Anucyia Victor, writer for Mail Online.

Dinner is obviously still pulling the crowds – it was packed out restaurant on a Monday night. The magnificent restaurant, overlooking Hyde Park is built into the Mandarin Oriental, 66 Knightsbridge. Our expert sommelier and S.Pellegrino colleague Neil Philips began the meal by pairing wines with S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, something that none of us had experienced before, but something that everyone felt worthwhile. A rather interesting tasting: water, wine and food.

And to dinner….

A lot of ‘umming and ahing’ was going on at the table because of the marvelous options such as lobster & cucumber soup and meat fruit. I went for meat fruit (c.1500) – THE signature dish of Dinner. A remarkable choice that is a play on an old English technique of making one food look like another. I was served a very sexy and glossy mandarin on a wooden board, complete with indented peel. But when sliced into, it was a charmingly soft chicken liver parfait. The softest and tastiest I’ve eaten. The orange peel was a thin layer of a zingy citrus gel, complimenting the parfait perfectly. Wow and yum!

For main, on the waiter’s guidance, I opted for Spiced Pigeon (c.1780). I nearly ordered steak, but he recommended finding good steak in London was easy, “try something different” was the advice. I agreed and thanked the kind man. The pigeon was outstanding: perfectly pink, velvety and melted away in my mouth. The spice was a traditional English spicing of star anise, cinnamon and so forth, something similar to what you’d find in mulled wine. Accompanied by artichoke and one fantastic rich ale sauce, the dish was faultless.

For dessert I had to choose THE signature pudding: Tipsy Cake (c.1810). Charred on a £70,000 roasting spit for up to four hours while smothered in smoking syrup every ten minutes, this was a pud like no other. It was served with syrup-infused brioche, cooking cream and pineapple caramel. Jealous fellow dinners wouldn’t stop dipping their spoons into my tipsy cake, I was silently angered by this, but completely understood, it was a beaut!

Everyone left very full and delighted by the imaginative and inspirational food provided by Dinner. You can expect to pay around £100 per head if sharing a bottle of cheaper wine. My final note is, save up and book!

There's dinner and then there's Dinner by Heston Blumenthal - the two Michelin star restaurant nestled in the Mandarin at the Hyde. A chef par excellence, awarded with the Order of the British Empire, Blumenthal uses British history in his dishes with some recipes dating back to as far as the 14th century - cooking of the past that is playful, audacious and tantalisingly creative. If you thought British cuisine was only about fish and chips, roast and mash, then read on ! Where does one begin.....

The highly recommend Meat Fruit, consisting of the most delicious chicken liver parfait.
The subtle and succulent spiced pigeon with ale and artichokes. The pièce de résistance. A culinary masterpiece from the 18th century, 1780 to be precise. A legend.
The Cod in Cider (c.1940) with Chard, onions & smoked artichokes.

For dessert, go for the Sambocade (circa 1390) Cheese cake created from the milk of goat elegantly complimented by elderflower & apple, roast figs & smoked candied walnuts. A combination that was quite simply bursting with flavours.
And the oh so dramatic liquid nitrogen ice cream trolley that creates the most delectable 'melt in your mouth' dessert, with a tingle that teases you with it's naughtiness and urges you on to sin, yet again.

Wasn't as wowed as I thought I would be! No extras apart from bread and although food was nice it wasn't wow as some other Michelin restaurants have been! We had the lunch menu so maybe the main is better! The starter we had was nice but felt a little wintry for a spring menu! The service was ok but again could have been better! Not sure I would return to be honest

When you go in to a two-star michelin restaurant, with the kind of ratings Dinner by Heston has, you really want to come giving it a 5/5.

But for a vegetarian, i was really underwhelmed by the options we had. Only one main course was available, the rest were starters that could be adapted to vegetarian and then converted to main.

That said, most of the dishes were really good for what they were (ie. starters). The dessert was exceptional, especially the tipsy cake. And so was the service.

Would definitely recommend to non-veg friends not to veg ones though.

What an experience. Started with the famous meat fruit along with the lobster/cucumber soup which lived up to every expectation. Next came the celery, chicken in lettuce and turbot. The chicken was succulent and the turbot literally tasted like heaven. We ended the meal with the tipsy cake and liquid nitrogen ice cream. Couldn't have asked for a better end. This place isn't just a restaurant it's an experience. On a side note, amazing service the waiters were friendly, polite and so helpful!

16th March 2015 · by Chris · in eating , England , London I had lunch at dinner.  I can already feel the virtual eye rolling that my readers are engaging in right now. Let me explain why I made such an eye catching statement.  Dinner generally is the biggest meal of the day.  In antiquity it used to be eaten at lunch.  How fitting that we were to be doing our testing at the traditional time.  Dinner comes with an interesting twist.  The dishes are old.  Not old like the food your old codger used to eat but old like Robin Hood and his band of merry men in tights.  All dishes on the menu are marked with their appropriate era of invention as part of their description. See this for an example.  Date of origin helpfully located next to source of inspiration. First up, to whet the appetite a bit. Some white and brown bread.  Nothing too special.  Not like the lovely bread I had had at other places, like the Ledbury .  I am looking at you with your bacon bread.  Not bad.  But just a bit ordinary. Roasted scallops with cucumber ketchup.  The scallops were cooked just right and the cucumber ketchup (pureed cucumber) added an interesting dimension.  The sea with a light dusting of the land. Next up, the meat fruit.  The item I have heard so much about.  On the left is just normal bread.  On the right, something that looks like sort of a fruit complete with leaf right?  Why is it called a meat fruit? Cut it open to see.  This fruit has hidden inside it chicken liver parfait.  A very unusual combination.  The sweet skin contrasting with the savory liver.  When eaten with the crispy bread to add a crunchy contrast to the soft texture of the meat fruit, this was an eye opening dish! Having devoured the starters, we expected great things

I’ve lived in London all my life and eaten in a vast amount of restaurants, but in the last couple of years one has been picking at my intrigue for a while and I finally took the time to visit – Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental hotel. Dinner by Heston currently holds a whopping two prestigious Michelin stars and has been voted No.5 in The Worlds 50 Best Restaurants list.

The restaurant is headed up by the talented Ashley Palmer-Watts, who is the former head chef of Heston’s other restaurant, The Fat Duck. Interestingly enough if you search for Ashley’s name on Google the first result coming up is people enquiring to his salary – weirdly. The idea and ethos behind the menu here is about recreating British culinary history. Recipes (according to the website) date back as far as the 1300’s but have been given a thoroughly modern makeover. It’s a very interesting concept which I can see the idea behind, but when we dined here dishes felt too familiar already – either that or everyone else is copying them?

I came to this restaurant with completely no idea of what to expect. I’d ignored reviews and shied away from photos as I didn’t want anyone elses experience to get in the way of mine, but from the moment we arrived everything seemed a little relaxed and a bit clumsy. With two Michelin stars and commanding high prices such as here – they need to create an experience. The bar for example, where you enter lacked atmosphere and felt as cold as an airport waiting lounge with garish hotel lobby tables and a bleak 90’s styled bar. When time to dine arrived we also had to prompt someone we were still here. The dining room did have some nice features such as the centre kitchen area with chefs cooking away and some sublime views over Hyde Park, the rest of the room however was nothing spectacular. We chose to eat from the set-menu, something I’m told was a mistake (NOT by staff of course). A starter of hay smoked salmon c.1730 with smoked beetroot, pickled lemon salad, parsley and sorrel was a perfectly lovely dish to start, although perhaps a little small in portion size (I should reveal I’m actually quite small). Hay smoked salmon seems to be the in trend across London right now – maybe Dinner by Heston Blumenthal kicked it off, who knows? Either way it felt too familiar and I was expecting to come here and eat more of history.

A ragu of pigs ear on toast with anchovy, onions and parsley was finally something which got me excited – it sounded unusual. Not unusual in its flavours, but more its textures, the mixture of them and cooking techniques. Pigs ears were I’m sure cooked slowly as they had a very soft, glutinous jelly like texture which melted in the mouth upon entry (that sounds wrong). The flavours were very rich, deep and concentrated and seasoning could not be faulted, the balance was simply perfect. However – the bread was a little soggy. Intentional or not – I didn’t enjoy it this way. The temperature of the food was tepid at best, something no food should be. Hot or cold – no excuses.

Now you may think I’m going in to too much detail or you love this restaurant more than I do – so hate me already but this was my experience from my personal meal and no one else’s. We moved on to the mains and dishes such as this roast quail c.1590 was yet another tasty dish which failed to get us excited. Again the temperature was lukewarm (I hate that word) at best and the portion size was abysmally small – they could have at least told me I’d be needing a side.

The most accomplished and definitely the best dish we ate here at Dinner was this c.1954 roast pollock with a buttery parsnip puree. Again it was by no means breaking any boundaries or providing a different dish experience which I’d struggle to find elsewhere but I will say this – the cooking of the pristine white fleshed fish, the seasoning and the puree were faultless. I think my main concern was simply expecting too much. With two Michelin stars behind its name – I thought there’d have been more originality to the dishes here. Were these rather ordinary dishes because I ate from the set-menu? Personally it shouldn’t be the reason and one restaurant can not rely simply on its two signature dishes – meat fruit and tipsy cake – both of which I did not try.

A silky smooth chocolate pre-dessert later our second best dish of our meal ended up being this millionaire shortbread c.1730 – finished off with crystalized chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Stunning ice cream too. The dish had just about everything going for it from its picture perfect presentation, right through to its rich and glossy well-tempered chocolate, all the way thorough to its crumbly biscuit base. This is how you do dessert and make every bite a joy to the palate. The tamarind prune tart was also a faultless beauty in terms of its cooking but for me the prune element too discreet – I really wanted to taste it.

It was almost time to finish up here, but not without sampling the theatrics of liquid nitrogen instant made ice cream right before your eyes. Again a little eye watering with its pricing you can’t forget the time and effort which goes into creating this small experience, which actually still sticks in your mind days after. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal was certainly an experience I’m glad I had, but for now I’ve not been left with any longing to return anytime soon. If Dinner by Heston Blumenthal want to serve a set-menu that’s fine – but if you’ve got two Michelin stars and ranked the 5th best restaurant in the world then perhaps a sub standard menu like this one, shouldn’t be served.

I went there with my friends we had very really good time. It was a very good restaurant which has good ambiance and delicious food to serve. They also have nice wine list and prestigious champagnes. The Service was superb from the staff members with a brief explanation of the menu. We were provided by young French who was very friendly and always smiling. The dessert was my favorite. About the price I would say it was reasonable for such a menu in London.

We were lucky to have the perfect waiter who gave us an even more personalized attention. I had the best 'foie gras' of my life, and ate in London! Oh, the account was consistent with the two hours of impeccable service, much cheaper than in good restaurants in Brazil. It has a perfect view of facing Hyde Park, where we saw a wonderful sunset

Amazing, unforgettable and just overall perfect dining experience! Went in March for a birthday dinner as a group of 6. One of our friends has been countless times and had been insisting for the past two years that we go and finally we did. I didn't really know quite what to expect but whatever it was didn't disappoint. The cocktails come from the mandarin bar and are pricey but so worth it. Our cocktail tab easily outweighed our food, oops! The staff are so friendly, they explain the history and evolution behind each dish, give honest recommendations and there's no pretentious behaviour. They were happy to accommodate when we said we wanted a selection and helped with our order. The chicken in lettuce although maybe sound like the least inspired dish, was amazing. There were some popular dishes that had unfortunately ran out and Id be lying if I said I remembered everything we ate but I can guarantee whatever you decide to try you won't regret your choice.

I went to eat at this place with my wife and it was a good experience. We had great time and delicious food with perfect presentation and taste. The service was first class and dining experience predominantly unparalleled as for me. Where can I start?? Every dish and every mouth was bursting with flavours.

For starters, we had chicken liver (shaped like a mandarin) and also the octopus. Presentation of the chicken liver was matched by the smoothness of the chicken liver mousse. Pieces of toasted bread kept coming and we had to make sure we didn't stuff ourselves with too much bread. The octopus: definitely the most succulent and tender piece of octopus that I've ever eaten.

Main dish: pork chop and spiced pigeon.. Both very juicy, flavorful and nice colour.

For dessert, ordered the goat cheesecake.. As we were eating it, pleasantly surprise to find an "apple sauce" centre which balances the goat cheese taste.

All in all a wonderful eating experience

Loved dining here. We had the Hay Smoked Mackerel and the Roast Scallops for entrees, the Hereford Ribeye to share for the main and the Taffety Tart for dessert - all amazing dishes. The Hay Smoked Mackerel was unbelievable - the 'Gentleman's Dressing' was like nothing I've ever tasted - absolutely amazing. Priced well for a 2 Michelin Star restaurant. Ambience was great, tables well spaced apart and decor was modern but not over the top fancy - no white table cloths and the waiter actually had a chat with us about Australia and mentioned Heston will be coming to Melbourne in 2015!

Came here when travelling. It was worth it- they had some adventurous menu items (which i love). Hubby had the meat fruit and I had snail porridge. For mains I had the pigeon and I liked that the waiter explained that because of the way they cook it the pigeon would be pink inside and if I was comfortable with that (rather than cutting it open and wondering if they had cooked it through). All the food was delicious. I also liked that on the menu it explains from what period in history the food was inspired by. Great atmosphere and fabulous night. Only problem was that we were a party of 8 and the only way they could accommodate us was on two tables of 4.we were right next to each other but would have been nice to be together.

Best food in London. My partner and I are on holiday in London.

We wanted to go to the Fat Duck but unfortunately, we can't get a reservation there. Hence, we got an alternative of going to another Heston's restaurant. We got the information from TimeOut London, and booked Dinner by Heston.
The service is very good, the waitress is very helpful and she explained the menu in depth and also recommended wine to go along with our meal.

The food is just fabulous. The explosion of flavours just when the food is in your mouth, it’s just a whole new dimension. This is a different level of culinary trade.
For starters, we order the Meat Fruit (Mandarin, chicken liver and foie gars parfait, grilled bread) and Lobster & cucumber soup (Lobster salad, onion and samphire. The Meat Fruit was just fabulous.
For mains, we ordered the Fillet of Aberdeen Angus (mushroom ketchup and triple cooked chips) and Spiced pigeon (Ale and artichokes).
As for deserts, we order the Tipsy cake and the Quaking pudding. We both love the food so much that we will strongly recommend it to friends who are heading to London to book at least 1 month ahead to get the preferred time.

Lives up to the hype. I'm a big fan of Hestons Feasts, and was fully expecting to be let down by the recreation of this at Dinner. I could not have been more wrong. The food is reasonably priced (by Australian standards) and packed full of flavour and theatre which is what makes this really special. I also had my first taste of Krug which was the icing on the cake!

Good English food with a Heston twist. Had a fantastic night out at Dinner by Heston. Waiting staff were all excellent, and the sommelier was extremely knowledgeable. This is definitely worth a visit as it caters to all palate types with wild a wacky dishes (Meat Fruit) or more stable traditional serves (steaks).

Whilst expensive, I did not think this was excessive for the experience, and would happily return for a round two - if only to keep on trying the different specials that are served

Queenie, eat your heart out. Well, lumminy, that was good! On the cocktail front - they have 14 choices of gin so you WILL be happy. We had Hendricks with a cucumber twist.

Then onto the meal. Completely pigged out so shared a meat fruit to start, I had the savoury porridge with cod cheeks and beetroot, satisfyingly reminscent of snail porridge, the others had the salamgundy with chicken oysters, marrow and horseradish, and the hay smoked mackerel. All lush. Then sirloin with marrow and the lengendary triple cooked chips, spiced pigeon with ale and artichokes (the pigeon was so tender, it's ridiculous, I always manage to dry it out) and scallops with cucumber and borage, pretty as a picture. Puds were tipsy cake with spit roast pineapple (like others, I actually preferred the cake having been prepared to be wowed by the pineapple, soft, moist, lovely) a very generous cheese selection including perfectly stored Whigmore, and a new menu addition of Summer Tart (strawberries, chamomile, violet and biscuit ice cream).

A lovely Chablis and a fine Gigondas, Orange Muscat to go with the pudding, and then bubbly when they brought out a spcial mango sorbet for my brother as it was his birthday (I am SUCH a good sister). And then caramel ganache with earl grey tea.

When service had calmed down we were taken into the kitchen to meet Ashley. He is such a good bloke, despite my jealousy that, having run all 3 of Heston's Bray gaffs and now this he's ONLY 33!!! But he was very sweet. Naive point, but I had no idea how HOT it is standing by the pass, how they do it I have no idea.

So all in all, a wonderful experience. We had a great table by the window and given the trooping of the colours had happened that morning, saw all the Royals driving past. Tbh, I think they would have been jealous of us; quite one of the best meals of my life.

Except the £410 price tag for three. And the service is not quite up to the food. But hey. He had a lovely birthday :)

Oh what fun!. One thing bound to put me off a hyped-up restaurant in a glamorous location with a celebrity chef hugging the the celebrity restaurant reviewer at the next table, would be the service. Or lack of. But not here - the service is absolutely charming, knowledgeable, and (gasp) comprehensible.

The food was delicious... but then I expected it to be so, both from rave reviews and from the price you pay. Absolutely delicious if not sock-knocking-off. I love the basis for the menu - this adds interest to what would otherwise be "just" lovely food. Highlights for us were the tipsy cake and the meatfruit.

Wines by the glass were of a sufficient range and I was very happy with the recommendations made by the sommelier.

In summary: great food; not the best meal I've ever had, but a hugely enjoyable experience. Was this partly the influence of hype? Absolutely - but who doesn't want to be at the coolest party in town?

Oh my lordy ...... I had been looking forward to this lunch since we booked before Christmas and it delivered on all fronts. Three courses with Heston and Ashley will take you to foodie heaven, put a big smile on your face and oh so gently take a couple of hundred pounds from your wallet.

Given the acres of coverage online and in the press I don't think that there is much for me to add. If you want to keep it cheapish tap water is available and the set menu of 3 courses for £28 is a bargain. If you look hard there are a few bottles of wine under £40 and there is a decent selection by the glass.

The meat fruit starter is just divine; a picture on the plate, it melted in the mouth and was like a lighter version of foie gras. B went for the roast scallops which came with a cucumber ketchup and borage; quite different and very tasty.

We washed this down with a bottle of the white Il Cantante, Etna which was crisp, fragrant and complex - not a great fan of Simply Red but Mr Hucknall is turning out some great wine. I also had a glass of a rich robust red; the Tributo, Tejo 2008 which I would recommend very highly.

Main courses and desserts were all top notch; not many people have mentioned the fish but B's roast turbot with cockle ketchup and leaf chicory was damn fine. If all cockles tasted like this I would be giving up the clam tomorrow.

More bread, not made in the kitchen but bought in, was offered when we had scoffed our initial offering. Service was attentive but not over-bearing; if you enquired about a dish or a wine the staff knew their stuff and could talk at length and with insight.

The room is well thought out; the tables are nicely presented and well-spaced. Wherever you are seated you will have a good view of the room, the kitchen or the park; if you are lucky you will have a combination of all three. It reminded me of one of my all time favourites: Jean Georges next to Central Park.

Just one strange thing caught my eye during our lunch which I mentioned to B and she concurred with my observation. The trousers worn by the lovely lady waiting staff are just not cut right; I have never seen so much VPL in one sitting. Heston himself was buzzing about during the few hours we were there but I would think he is much too focused on the food at the moment to have given much attention to the look of his ladies front of house. Hopefully he will soon be turning his attention to these small details.

We left around 5pm slightly heavy around the middle but light of heart and with a happy disposition as we made our way through the crowds down to Green Park and the short hop home.

Having got this fine dining malarkey out of the way for the year looking forward to getting back down to earth in New Cross tomorrow night at Meateasy …….

If you've seen Heston's TV shows, he probably blew your mind with food and science. But seeing how the name of his restaurant literally implies dinner by the man himself, will Heston's mad scientist flair still remain the star of the show?

Starters: Salamugundy and Meat Fruit You probably can’t come to Dinner without getting the Meat Fruit. It’s the house’s signature dish and one which comes with a great deal of hype. M got it because he’s a bigger fan of liver parfait than I but we stole bits off each other’s plates anyway. In this case, I was so glad he let me steal as much as I wanted because it was even more delicious than I had imagined.

I’d spent some time thinking about what I was going to eat and decided that I was just going to go with the top recommended food, the signature dishes for starter and dessert. So first up was the Meat Fruit – a liver parfait in a mandarin jelly skin, with toast. I’ve read that they get through so many of these that there is a form of assembly line to prepare them, so there could be a chance that care gets reduced. I have no idea if that was the case, it tasted great. Rich and smooth with the orange providing the citrus cut through.

I am a big fan of kitchen wizardry. I can’t get enough of food frozen by liquid nitrogen. It’s just so unnecessary, and thus, great. So you won’t be surprised when I tell you of my love for Heston Blumenthal. The man is fantastic. He makes dinnertime more exciting than playtime. He makes food that looks like other food that it isn’t. Wow. I’ve wanted to eat at the Fat Duck since the dawn of time (or since I heard of its existence) but unfortunately until I sell a kidney I’m unlikely to do so. I settled for Dinner by Heston at the Mandarin Oriental instead. A worthy compromise. Restaurant The restaurant is beautiful, as to be expected. Dim lighting, polished everything, loads of that ambience all swirling about the place. There’s some rather interesting design features too, notably the lampshades which aren’t even lampshades at all – they’re jelly moulds. Mental. Dinner Menu The menu is pretty, isn’t it? Every dish is inspired by cookery books of times gone by, all of which are listed o

To be fair, it was very apparent that the staff were all well trained, professional and polite, but they all lacked the love, passion and knowledge of their own food and wine as if they were unemotional robots. Is it so bad that it has an impact on whether or not we liked The Dinner and whether or not we will come back? No, not at all, because the food were truly good. But it certainly did not hit any of our expectation from a michelin restaurant.

Not many people in the US have heard of Heston Blumenthal. He is considered an avant-garde Chef who helped bring Molecular Gastronomy to the forefront before it became such a clichéd phrase. His next restaurant, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, was much more convenient for tourists like me since I didn’t need to figure out how to drive on the left side of the road or in the right side of the car.

Headed up by Dorset chef Ashley Palmer-Watts, Dinner by Heston is quite an unique take on historic British gastronomy. Heston has tried to recreate British culinary history at Dinner with recipes dating back all the way to the 1300’s, given an 21st century makeover. Brought to life with contemporary ingredients and Heston’s signature cooking techniques, this menu is all about taking diners on a journey through the rich culinary history that exists in Britain. This carefully orchestrated ‘angle’ is evident through out the dining experience. The menu being a good case in point – it lists the decade that the inspiration for the dish comes from along with a list of the cookbooks that have been used to populate the menu. The menu also had tid bits of insightful information on the sleeve! I really like the concept and the execution – it makes you think about the food in front of you. I wasn’t however the biggest fan of the interiors – I understand that it’s been conceived to be subtle and contemporary but it lacked ambience for me. You walk through the crowded bar before you hit the massive dining room which although was packed when Seb and I visited, just lacked atmosphere. The fact that Dinner is situated in a hotel becomes obvious when you see the dining room – it’s very plain. The only thing that stood out to me in that room was the wall decorations in the shape of antique jelly moulds and the view of the buzzing kitchen through the glass walls. With a great view of the kitchen, we started off with some bread and some wine.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal was a highly anticipated restaurant when it opened in January 2011, probably the hottest restaurant opening in London that year. For those not familiar with the name Heston Blumenthal he is one of the handful of British chefs behind a three Michelin star restaurant, Fat Duck in Brey. He is a self-taught chef playing in the field of molecular gastronomy. However, molecular gastronomy is not what defines Dinner. It is rather the history of the dishes that stands out, along with meticulous execution. The menu is filled with reinvented old British recipes, some dating back a few centuries. The style leans towards rich and earthy flavours. Heading the kitchen of Dinner is Ashley Palmer-Watts, ex-head chef and veteran of Fat Duck. Behind the wines and keeping the sommelier team in shape is the very knowledgeable Master Sommelier João Pires. The dining room is large and spacious which makes you forget that you’re in a room with over one hundred diners. The well gro

I’ve wanted to visit Dinner ever since it opened so it was great to finally get around to it. The restaurant is situated in the luxurious Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge. We were, from what I could see, the only normal people in there. By normal I mean not filthy rich, not having an aperitif and drinking tap water.  Bernie Ecclestone was on one of the diners on the next table if that makes things clearer. Meat Fruit – Great idea, well executed The service was very friendly and not snooty at all. When we were seated, we studied the tome of a wine list but there was nothing below £35 so we opted to just have two glasses instead. This is a really good tactic to help limit the amount you spend in these kind of places. We’d done a lot of menu research before coming so we swiftly chose the ‘meat fruit’ and ‘rice and flesh’. Dinner is an amazing restaurant. It IS expensive, I'm afraid. Particularly when you start to add drinks to the bill. It is the kind of place you go to for a special occasion, as we did. It is not an every day place. But we all need things to look forward to and to which we aspire. That is where this kind of 'uber-restaurant' fits the bill perfectly. If you love your food, you'll know of great local restaurants, pop-ups, street food and market stalls for ordinary treats. Save up for a trip to Dinner and it won't disappoint. Just don't expect to make it a habit. Unless you win the lottery.

The hype around Mr Blumenthal’s Dinner meant that it was impossible to secure a reservation for the night-time meal, so I settled for a Sunday lunch.  One advantage of arriving in daylight hours is the view out over Hyde Park – necessary as the room is a little corporate for a romantic meal a deux.  But we are seated by a large window and romance is saved. It wouldn’t be a Heston restaurant with some quirks thrown in, no normal eating here, no sirreee, our waiter explains a little about the concept of Dinner – it’s based on Monsieur Blumenthal’s interest in the styles & techniques of cooking over the past 500 years.

A three course dinner, round of cocktails and two shared bottles of wine ended costing each of us just under £100 each, which, as far as Michelin star experiences go is incredible value. The food is innovative and very British, with Heston's unique stamp all over it. Dinner deserves all the accolade it's got and if you love food, this should definitely be on your bucket list.

The taste of food has always been my top priority when it comes to judging a restaurant. I mean, obviously that is the main duty of a restaurant: to provide me with food. I always fully disapprove of restaurant that offer “experiences”, basically highly over-priced food simply because they give you a small show or they make it in a really strange environment. I do, however, believe that a restaurant, once it reaches a certain culinary stage, needs to think about the mood and service as well. That is what will differentiate a great restaurant from an amazing restaurant. There are no complaints on those aspects h

Like the rest of Kensington, the setting of Dinner by Heston Blumenthal is over-the-top grand and opulent. In terms of grandiosity it is not quite on par with dining rooms of for instance Apsley’s in London and Martin Berasategui in San Sebastian, but it’s still grand.

we had a great time again at Dinner by Heston. The standard of cooking, fish dishes aside, was pretty exemplary across the board. It's a lot more accessible than the Fat Duck, but less mysterious and theatrical for that. That's not always a bad thing of course; the service is unintrusive, the dining room is airy, light and comfortable. It's certainly still one of our favourite dining experiences in Central London and wouldn't hesitate in visiting again.

Weighing up the slim chance of getting into the Fat Duck in Melbourne and passing the 2 month mark to book in the UK, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal was the way to go. Holding 2 Michelin stars and ranked number 5 in  The Worlds 50 Best Restaurant this year (surprisingly The Fat Duck came in 47) it didn’t feel like I had settled :) Dinner by Heston is inspired by historic British recipes where Dinner recreates and puts a modern spin.  We came during lunchtime and there were two options: the set lunch (£38 each for 3 courses) or a la carte. None of the set lunch dishes really tickled our fancy so it was a la carte all the way! Earl Grey Tea cured Salmon (£16) I’ve seen too many pictures of the meat fruit which has left me drooling and lusting over it for too long. Just look at this deceptive beauty with the intentions of the citrus skin looking so real. Meat Fruit (£17.50) Cutting into the mandarin jelly revealed the creamy, velvet smooth chicken liver and foie gras parfait that was the most flavour filled pate I have ever tasted. It is a bit heavy and rich but that didn’t stop me polishing it all off. The waiter offered to bring another toasted sourdough bread when he saw me getting low. Yay! Duck, just get in my belly. Tender, juicy duck that was cooked to perfection with a layer of fat on top that created that melt in your mouth texture. I gobbled this baby up as fast as I could – not a second to waste. Drizzled with an amazing sauce with a hint of wine brought everything together. Served with giant soft onions and a side of umbles (offals) that tasted like mushrooms – umbles weren’t too weird because I had no idea what they were. Powdered Duck Breast (£34) Chicken cooked with Lettuces (£32) You had to order the tipsy cake at the start of your meal as it takes 45 minutes to prepare. Fluffy, soft and super fresh cake soaked in a sweet, apple-like syrup and is one for the peeps that like subtle, not too sweet desserts. A slice of spit roasted pineapple was juicy and swe

Heston Blumenthal’s relatively new London restaurant, Dinner is so named to reflect its menu – an innovative tribute to Britain’s extensive gastronomic history. A dining experience such as this, set in the home of the 2012 Olympics, perfectly complements The Gourmet Belle’s current British motif; so it is jolly fortunate that I recently enjoyed dinner at Dinner. A real sense of occasion was firmly established the moment we rolled up to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel ; the grandiose, old-worldy building that houses Heston’s swish noshery. We were warmly greeted at the door by immaculately attired staff who swiftly relayed us through the opulent lobby and up richly, carpeted stairs to the lively Mandarin Bar . I beseechingly glanced over at my dining companion to plead for a little aperitif, only to discover she was already across the room in animated conversation with the restaurant’s hostess, and eagerly waving me over; her voraciousness palpable. There were a couple of things that fell slightly below my expectations at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, but then again given how high I’d held my hopes, some misses were inevitable; most of the dishes lived up to it. Last December after a particularly boring but expensive meal at L'Autre Pied I got searching for my next culinary indulgence and discovered that Heston Blumenthal was going to be opening a London based restaurant. Having dreamt of a visit to The Fat Duck for years I immediately booked. Despite the fact Dinner by Heston wouldn't open until January, the first date I could find available was April. So after a four month wait, on a beautiful sunny Sunday in April, I headed to Dinner by Heston with food photographer Paul Winch-Furness . His photos of the evening are included here. We were both a little starstruck and thought we would struggle to make a accurate critique as even the bread tasted amazing...and we weren't sure if it did or if it was because Heston had been there. We began the meal with the infamous meatfruit. Everything was edible except the leaves...we wondered, surely Heston could have made the leave edible as well? But it was delicious. Smooth and rich... Dinner by Heston Blumenthal is Heston's first London restaurant, and opened on 31st January 2011. Most restaurant critics have not published their reviews yet, so we decided to have our Chinese New Year Eve's meal there solely based on Blumenthal's reputation (as the chef of Fat Duck , the 3 Michelin starred restaurant, one of the top 3 restaurants in the world), and that of the Mandarin Oriental. It will be interesting to see what our views are compared to those of the professionals. Meat Fruit (c.13th to 15th century) was my favourite starter as it was fun and playful. We were happy to see the mandarin as in Chinese, it has the same pronunciation as 'gold' which is what we like having for Chinese New Year! What looked like a perfect mandarin was actually a chicken liver parfait enclosed in a thin layer of mandarin 'gel'. The parfait was smooth and it was perfect with the subtle mandarin gel. What you see is not what you eat is also the signature of Fat Duck. Does that mean Dinner is

The tangy, sharp flavours of the lemon complimented the creamy goats curd wonderfully but the raisins were a little overpoweringly sweet. Ragoo of Pigs Ears (c.1750) Anchovy, onions & parsley was a hearty, meaty reduction of rich and gelatinous meat that had a texture that’s pretty hard to explain – it was a little like pulled pork but more cloying and sticky, almost like a thick gravy, but filled with melt in the mouth morsels of meat and onion. Choosing Dinner as the place to celebrate our first wedding anniversary was a slight gamble. Back in December when I booked, there was eager anticipation but it was too early for hype: Giles Coren had yet to call it the best restaurant in the world, it wasn't particularly hard to get a table and no one, including me, had ever heard of meat fruit. Jump forward two months and the opposite is true. If anything, however, this made the choice of Dinner for a special occasion all the more precarious: massive expectations were raised, divorce was threatened if I tried to discuss the menu with Mr F for the fiftieth time and the chances of us getting away with my original plan of the affordable set lunch dwindled to nothing. As the first London venture of Heston Blumenthal, Dinner caused not so much a stir as a whirlwind in the press. Ashley Palmer-Watts has long been Heston’s right-hand man at the Fat Duck, and here in what used to be the premises of Foliage he gets to spread his wings. The room itself is a big improvement on Foliage, as in particular the level of the room has been raised to provide a decent view over Hyde Park. The dining room seats 110 at full capacity, and has an open kitchen. A centre-piece of the room is a rotisserie being turned by an elaborate clockwork mechanism, a flight of fancy but one that seems to reflect Heston Blumenthal’s considerable imagination and evident fascination with gadgets.

The follow up restaurant is never fun. It's the difficult second album. As you try to build on the glory of your early triumphs you can only two ways - up or down. You end up with a Terminator 2 or a Jaws 2 , a 'Morning Glory' or a 'Second Coming' (although, incidentally I'm part of the .01% of the population that prefers the latter to Stone Roses' debut). Heston Blumental's first restaurant used to be the Best Restaurant In The Universe, until El Bulli and then Noma swiped his crown. The Fat Duck is still currently on the podium though, swinging the bronze. So to say expectations are high is to say Muburak is a little short on mates right now. The menu has been the same for quite some time now so I think it will be interesting to see how long they can keep up a full diary of advance bookings without having to make some changes as many of the dishes seem to have more novelty value than longevity of repeat appeal.

I actually went to Dinner , Heston Blumenthal's restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in Knighstbridge, over a month ago and haven't had a chance to write about it so my memory is a little blurry. Plus we could only get a 9.30pm sitting and the Other Half and I had both been working hard and sleeping little, so by the end of the meal we were in a total daze - but importantly in a happy, full-of-good-food daze so it was actually kinda nice. In fact if they had said we could curl up under the table and sleep I would have felt quite comfortable doing just that. Anyway I digress - basically Dinner is ace. The service was really fantastic and the food was even better - of course I had to have the Meat Fruit (pictured) to start. I love chicken liver pate and this creamy parfait version was cleverly disguised as a mandarin. I don't need to write too much - others much more qualified than me have done so but let me just say that everything they say is true, this is a joy of a starter a

There's quite the black market in trade for reservations at Dinner, Heston Blumenthal's latest restaurant in London. Diners have to book in advance 2 months to the day before their reservation (it was formerly 3) and seats are, to put it mildly, like hen's teeth. I had a reservation when the restaurant first opened, then had to give it away due to some travel plans so BIG thanks to my friend Sarah who passed on a reservation to me when her friend Mark couldn't make it. Yes, I will happily play Mr Hummington for the night if it gets me a slice of meat fruit. Meat fruit? Yes, meat fruit. A fantabulous, creative ball of lusciously creamy chicken liver parfait, wrapped in a mildly citrussy mandarin jelly which looks just like a mandarin. Pigeon, artichokes & ale The menu is not your everyday experience, although it's not as out there as Heston's The Fat Duck so might also appeal to those like to keep their forks planted more firmly in the steak and veg

Few restaurant openings have had the buzz that Dinner has had in the past year. Foodies have been collectively freaking out ever since it was announced that Heston, *the* Heston, would be opening up his first restaurant in 16 years right smack dab in the middle of London, and with good reason - it is pretty damn exciting. But was it worth it? In a word, yes. Though not the dining experience I would imagine his three Michelin star The Fat Duck to be, Dinner is excellent. I wouldn't call it earth-shattering, but from beginning to end, there were a lot of ooh's and ahh's at our table. I dined there with my pal, Gary , for what was I thought going to be a posh, but competitively priced 3-course lunch for £28. It turned out, however, that deal is only available Monday through Friday, which meant while we got to choose from the whole menu, we also had to pay quite a bit more than we thought. Starters were in the £10-£15 range, mains around the £30 mark and desserts about £8-10. Expensiv

Heston Blumenthal’s first London restaurant has set the UK’s food media into a frenzy. And with some good reason – the food is pretty good. In a similar vein to the Fat Duck, there is a lot of work that goes into the creation of each dish – both intellectually and in terms of the technical skill required to consistently replicate each deceivingly simple dish on a much grander scale than any of his Bray outposts. The kitchen generally pulls it off, and the service seemed to be pretty spot-on when we dined there (though we were at the chef’s table, so you would expect nothing less). Don’t come expecting the dramatic culinary theatre that Heston is famous for at the Fat Duck – and on many of his TV programs – as the dishes here are far more straightforward in their presentation, with a few exceptions. With a windowful view of Hyde Park – thanks to the newly installed floor-to-ceiling windows – and its very own Swiss watchmaker-fashioned rotating gas-fired rotisserie for pineapples, it’s d

The most hotly anticipated London restaurant opening to date has finally opened for business. A quick trawl through the interwebs returns dozens of reviews, blog posts, photographs and genial hype. Expectedly, there is just no shortage of media (virtually and in print) coverage centred around Heston Blumenthal's first foray into the queasy world of London fine dining. Blumenwho you say? Only one of (if not) the most highly regarded chefs in the universe, famous for his three michelin starred restaurant - The Fat Duck - in Bray, for his obsessively scientific approach in constructing recipes, for the TV show that plotted the reinvention of a road-side diner and for another TV show that had him recreate medieval feasts from myth, legend and history books. Even in post-meal, I have only read one complete review about Dinner (Gill's), so as to keep my expectations as undiluted as possible. Besides, it was always either gonna win rave reviews or suffer major criticism; In this case, it is t

If there existed a movie that all your best friends loved, had received rave reviews from every movie critic on the planet, and had smashed all box-office records, would you be interested in seeing it? The answer seems obvious - of course you would, even out of sheer curiosity, and although there would be a risk your inflated expectations didn't quite match up to the reality, you wouldn't blame anyone but yourself, you'd probably still have a good time, and anyway what do you have to lose? And yet for some reason, when a restaurant receives similarly universal praise, there are certain parties who, instead of wanting to see what all the fuss is about, instinctively brace to the opposite position, desperate to not debase themselves by accidentally having anything so trivial as a popular opinion. I find the psychology of this quite hard to fathom - why would you deny yourself the pleasure of a fantastic meal just to mark yourself as separate from the herd? There's no shame in liking some

When I secured a booking a few months ago (for early June!) for a lunch at Dinner, Heston Blumenthal's restaurant in London, I knew we'd probably be dining off his set lunch menu: it's the most affordable option at £28 for three courses and is only available on weekdays. There were four of us dining that day (me, Blai and his parents) and this would help us not rack up a very big bill. But first, first impressions. Well, it's in the Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge and yes, it's certainly as plush inside as the exterior leads you to imagine. I honestly don't remember the last time I ate in a restaurant situated in hotel but I'm sure I haven't eaten in one like this. The restaurant's decor reflected the theme of modernised historic British gastronomy, with its views to the large kitchen and the jelly mould lamps on the walls. All very modern and all very comfortable. As we arrived early, we were first led to the bar where we ordered pre-lunch drinks . And here we tarried until I, of

World's 9th Best Restaurant. 2 Michelin Star.

Well today my life was turnt upside down. I had the absolutely privilege to have lunch at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal for my boyfriend's twenty-first. I have to say straight away that when you watch things like Heston's Fantastic Feasts or Heston's Mission Impossible it is so easy to turn your nose up at the diner's who burst in to floods of tears at the meal they've had. However, I very nearly had a complete emotional break down in this meal. Never have I experienced, culinary speaking, anything quite like this. For my review, read on....

Starters of Hay Smoked Mackerel & Meat Fruit

I had the Hay Smoked Mackerel with Gentleman's Relish and Pickled Lemon. It was so sublime and well balanced. The lemon was an under-running flavour and washed the pallet for the next bite really well. The mackerel was so tasty! The texture was so buttery and cut easily. The skin was so shiny and the relish- which I have never eaten before- was a perfect off set.

Alex had the Meat Fruit. The parfait encased in the clever mandarin gel was super smooth and the mandarin jelly gave it a slight crunch. The bread was warm and toasted which complimented the parfait really well. Next step; making the stalk edible.

Mains: Spiced Pigeon & Sea Bass

Alex had the Spiced Pigeon with Ale and Artichokes. The pigeon was cooked pink and juicy, and cut really easily. The meat just melted in the mouth. The artichoke hearts were new to him and they tasted sweet and matched the ale sauce which balanced the spice from the pigeon.

I had the Sea Bass with Cockle Ketchup and Leaf Chicory. The cockle ketchup actually tasted like tomato sauce, which was a real surprise and actually worked really well with the bass and the leaves. I wasn't as much of a fan of the cockles themselves as the texture was rather mushy once you had gone through the initial exterior. The fish was cooked beautifully, despite having one mouthful that was a bit chewy. The skin was crisp but easily the cut through, and the leaves really brought the dish together as their bitter salty taste was the perfect offset to the sweet ketchup.

Dessert: Chocolate Bar & Brown Bread Ice Cream

Any chocolate fanatic, such as myself, will find themselves frothing at the mouth for this dessert. A slab of pure chocolate ganache coated in a dark chocolate glaze is the perfect sweet finish to dinner. But hold on one moment there, ginger ice cream? With chocolate. Well yes, the bitterness of the ginger actually works excellently with the pure sweet heaven of the chocolate. The blend of textures in this pudding are also excellent.

Brown bread ice cream. Now unfortunately Heston this is something we have eaten before. Although, by comparison in this ice cream you actually got the brown bread taste. The caramel sauce perfectly complimented the ice cream and the oat biscuit base below to create a sweet pudding that suits people who prefer savoury dishes.

Overall Review: The atmosphere, setting, welcoming and friendly staff are simply a compliment to this incredible food. I have been a Heston fan for several years, and have all his cook books and biographies. It was a true honour to eat at Dinner and I would recommend it to anyone who really loves gastronomy and trying something genuinely incredible.

Heston Blumenthal. These words sound like poetry to our ears, especially as Blumenthal means flower valley in German. His restaurants always seemed a tad out of reach for our wallets, but we came across his set lunch menu for £38 at Dinner. It might not be Dinner by Heston but Lunch by Heston will do the trick.

The first thing we noticed walking into the restaurant was the glass wall displaying the very active kitchen full of testosterone. The absence of women chefs only meant one thing: we’ll be served some very manly dishes today.

While going through the A la Carte Menu (we had to take a sneak peek), the waiter explained that recipes that went as far back as the 16th century inspired some dishes. Already feeling like queens, we thought that feasting without wine would be inappropriate, so we ordered a bottle.

Additionally to the set menu, we couldn’t help but order the famous meat fruit (c.1500). A chicken liver pate –wrapped in a layer of citrus jelly– that looked like a mandarin. There is nothing less feminine than disguising pate into fruit. The whole spread was extremely light and slightly sharp. It felt like magic.

The entire set menu was delicate, yet bursting with flavours. The Lemon Salad, with smoked artichoke, goat’s curd and pickled lemon (c.1730), the Roast cured Salmon with beetroot purée (c.1847) and the Prune and Tamarind Tart (c.1730) made us travel through time and were exquisite. The bill not so much, but expected.

This place is generally buzzing with people, but we managed to reserve a table in time and reached there a couple of days ago. We ordered for the set menu which served a variety of dishes culled from the British history and were prepared brilliantly. Surprisingly, each and every dish that we tried was superbly flavored and tasted absolutely delicious. We also called for some wine which tasted amazing, and made that day a truly great one.

Meat fruit and spiced pigeon are the historic revivals of none other than Heston Blumenthal, a chef who has adopted science into his kitchen and advocates multi-sensory cooking.

The restaurant presents you with the bizarre and confuses your taste buds, you take a bite from a tangerine and are confronted with chicken liver. The pigeon was incredible like a rich gamey chicken and even the sourdough bread they bring to your table is something to rave about. For afters I went for the taffety tart which looked so good it was a shame to cut into. They also have a machine that instantly makes ice cream by mixing custard with liquid nitrogen.

Dinner by Heston lands #5 in The World's 50 Best Restaurants this year (two spots up from last year) and I have to commend staff for making it the experience that it is. The food, albeit less of a display of Heston's famed edible trickery at The Fat Duck (#47 on the list), fares really well and the service is really and truly outstanding.

Plaid Boy and I went for lunch before his evening flight. We took advantage of the set lunch (at £38 per head) and ordered a few bits in between so we can try more than our fare share of meals.

You get complimentary bread, but I suggest you keep your belly space for the meal proper.

We ordered Heston's signature meat fruit (£17) separately as it does not appear on the set menu (and rightly so, as it is too exquisite and deserves its own spotlight). It's essentially chicken liver and foie gras parfait encased in a mandarin jelly peel, shaped and made to look like a clementine and served with grilled sourdough bread.

I saw Plaid Boy's eyes twinkle with amusement as this came to our table. It's definitely snapshot-worthy, and pretty darn good. The parfait is light, creamy in texture and full on with flavour. It's rich, but the mandarin jelly perfectly cuts out any over. Perfect on grilled sourdough.

Plaid Boy ordered another signature dish, Rice and Flesh (£17). It's a decadent plate of risotto flecked generously with saffron and topped with red wine braised calf tail pieces. The vibrant colours is a feast for the eyes and the aromatics are strong enough to whet your appetite. All elements were cooked nicely, but I do think it's slightly too rich for my liking.

Palates teased with pretty darn good flavours, we were ready to embark on our set lunch.

We both started with the pressed octopus salad. Served with a small fennel and pea shoot salad, it was fairly refreshing. I'm quite partial to fennel but the little drops of vinaigrette jelly cut through the aniseed flavour I often dislike. The octopus itself had good texture. Refreshing.

For mains, I went for the roast cured salmon and you can just about see how perfectly cooked it is from the outside. Served with pickled candy beetroot, which I thought worked harmoniously with the fish and sea vegetables, this was a nice light dish.

Plaid Boy took the meat route and went for the pork belly with minted peas. Slow-cooked for hours, it was delicately tender and melted off in my mouth. Think of it as the royalty of Sunday roasts.

Surprised myself by choosing the prune and tamarind tart over the chocolatey millionaire tart. It was really good. The brulee was firm and had good flavour but the prune and tamarind filling was quite a revelation. There was just enough of it to boost the tart's flavour profile and it worked with the thin pastry base.

Unsurprisingly, I ate most of the millionaire tart too. I was in awe of how glossy the crystallised chocolate was. It was rich, dark, and very appealing to every chocolate fiend. The vanilla ice cream was okay, but I'd happily do without.

What really impressed me is the service which is impeccable. The servers seemed genuinely passionate for you to have a grand time. The maître d' and his army of servers have been generous and attentive from explaining the years and concepts on the menu to asking if they could organise more toast when I've finished the sourdough bread halfway through my meat fruit (#noshame); from offering more wine and asking if we were comfortable to even accompanying us to the powder rooms. I've had experienced dining at restaurants who look amazing on the surface but a let down on food and service. I definitely think they could learn a lot from Dinner - there's greatness in humility and putting the customers first.

Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I can't wait to take people here again. I would've wanted a bit more variety/excitement on the set menus but what's good is that it's been priced reasonably for you to order a few extra bits. It was definitely pleasant.

Signature dish was the meat fruit. Looks like a mandarin orange, smells like a mandarin orange but is in fact foie gras and goose liver. The complexity of the cooking is what is striking, a relatively simple dish comes out looking WOW and tasting even better. Main course was the "powdered duck" again an awesome dish. Lost for words. Have an opportunity in your life take it to dine in one of heston's restaurants and you will never regret spending so much money on one meal.

Alright, alright. I’ll tell you about Dinner.
If you follow me on Instagram @Alessandra_LDN, you’ll know I promised a post from my fabulously romantic, surprise date at Dinner.

Now the title of this post doesn’t suggest I’ve been to a fake dinner by Chef Blumenthal. It refers to my lovely lunchtime visit with Ireland’s sweetest, Miss Katie Larmour. Both desperate to dine in the restaurant, but not able to plump for the full menu, we savoured every morsel of the meat fruit & tipsy cake on our visit last year.

This, however, was the real deal.
I put on my favourite lacy black dress and black heels before being whisked away to an unknown destination.
Now, I absolutely love surprises. Giving a surprise is one of my favourite things to do. Receiving them is equally enjoyable, but I always figure them out. I either convince (bully) the surpriser into telling me, or work like a detective to put together the clues. My date, however, threw so many curveballs to bury the tracks that I was left completely in the dark with a nervous excitement in my stomach. (Or was that hunger?)

You may know from my Fat Duck post that I am completely inspired and maybe even a little obsessed with Chef Heston Blumenthal’s food. The reinvention of Britain’s historic gastronomic past by Blumenthal and Ashley Palmer-Watts has been something I’ve longed to experience since before the doors opened.
As I was lead towards the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, I blurted out ‘are going to Dinner!?’ To which I received a smirk and the sarcastic response, ‘of course we’re going to dinner.’
The rest was a blur of giggling excitement until the bread arrived.

Warm sourdough and brown bread with a salty, creamy slab of butter brought me back to earth as I rambled on about the restaurant, the guests in the dining room and the impeccable service.

For our first course, he ordered the savoury porridge of frogs legs with smoked beetroot, garlic and fennel.

The meat was tender and paired beautifully with the savoury porridge, flavoured with parsley and cumin. The beetroot, one smoked and one pickled, each had such strong, uniquely different flavours it was hard to believe they were both the same vegetable. It was a stunning dish, both in presentation and execution, but nothing compares to my mandatory order.
Meat Fruit.
This plump little sphere of charade makes me very, very happy.

I won’t go on too much, as I know I’ve detailed it in the previous post, but the mandarin mocking meat fruit is an absolute must! (say that three times fast)
The mandarin gel encapsulates a decadently smooth chicken liver & foie gras parfait which is to be slathered on warm, crunchy grilled bread. I can safely say I would happily eat this for any meal of the day.

For our main courses, he ordered powdered duck breast with smoked confit fennel & umbles.
The meat had been sous vide and was rendered perfectly tender. Duck is rarely my first choice, but this was a great dish and fennel was an excellent accompaniment.
My roast Ibérico pork chop with spelt, ham hock & Robert sauce was… massive.

The flavours were deep and rich and although the meat was a little tough, it was still an excellent dish. I managed to get through most of the pork, even with an accompanying order of triple cooked chips and mashed potatoes as sides.

The charming server convinced me that mashed potato dipped fries were delicious. As I didn’t enjoy the much talked about chips on my previous visit, I hesitantly gave them another chance. I’m still not a triple cooked convert, but these were decidedly better than their chewy predecessors and mash dipped chips could become a ‘thing’.
(a very weird ‘thing’)

Enough about spuds, it’s time to get tipsy.
Another of Dinner’s signature dishes, tipsy cake arrives in a darling little cast iron pot. The rum soaked, cream filled brioche is a heavenly mouthful when paired with spit roasted pineapple.
There are only five segments in the cake. This is either a very cruel game or a very crucial way to sum up your dinner date. Good luck with that one.

As our final dessert (don’t give me that look, we shared the tipsy cake), we ordered ice cream. Like most things involved with Mr. Blumenthal, ice cream is not just ice cream.
Instead, it is table side, liquid nitrogen ice cream!
As the custom-made liquid nitrogen ice cream trolley rolled its way towards us, I wiggled with the excitement of a small child upon hearing the ice cream van enter the neighbourhood.

Our lovely, very knowledgeable server talked us through the process. The creamy, vanilla bean ice cream is then scooped into sugared filo dough cones before we were asked to choose our toppings.

The toppings to choose from were chocolate coated anise seeds, freeze dried raspberries, chocolate hazelnut crunch and popping candy.

My date chose freeze dried raspberries & popping candy, which I sampled and posed with whilst mine was being churned.

As it turned out to be an extremely difficult decision, when I finally settled on chocolate hazelnut & popping candy, the lovely server filled my plate with freeze dried raspberries and chocolate anise seeds for me to dip my ice cream into as I went. Another incredible touch of service leaving me grinning ear to ear as I dipped and licked my greedy way through the rest of my cone.

As if we hadn’t indulged enough, an earl grey infused chocolate ganache with a delicate caraway biscuit arrived as a chocolatey kiss goodbye. The perfect end to such an amazing evening.

I left happy, sugar high and a little food drunk.

I cannot recommend Dinner by Heston Blumenthal enough. It is the perfect venue for a special occasion with very special food.
Oh, and a safe bet for a very impressive date!

Say Heston one more time. Just hearing his name makes my stomach rumble and sets my brain into gastronomical overdrive. Food and history together is my passion and Dinner satisfies me every time. The menu notifies you that what you're eating is a true historic treasure which makes all the flavours bow down to the dish and chant its name.

The meat fruit. My favourite story. Trickery and tastiness.

Nettle porridge. Confusing and satisfying.

Earl grey smoked salmon. Earthy and simple.

Scallops with cucumber ketchup. Tangy and tantalising.

I can go on forever and I probably will. But let's stop. #nitrogenicecreambrownbreadicecreamtipsycake okay I'll stop.

Luxury from start to finish. Yet luxury in a fun, imaginative, slightly bonkers style. The meal reminded me of a sophisticated and expensive history lesson, but with less gum under the table.

The experience is a must (and generally must be saved up for and booked far in advance!). The service was totally unflawed, and any requests or queries were met with a smile and speedy service.

The menu was fun and historically inspired, with each dish influenced by a recipe from as far back as 14th century. The signature dish, the meat fruit, was a delight, even for a girl who is not a huge fois fras fan. Inside this faux clementine with speckled skin and adorned with leaf and stalk, is the creamiest, richest fois gras I've ever had. I enjoyed the contrast of rich meat appearing as small, fresh fruit. It worked impeccably.

Other dishes were also delicious; the crab cake was quite spongy and a subtle combination of differing flavours that worked well together. For mains, the powdered duck was a juicy, flavoursome breast with all the flavour sealed in nicely. My cod in cider (possibly a boring choice anywhere else) was surprisingly flavoursome; the wonderful, rich and creamy sauce in which it was served did not overpower the delicate flavour of the fish. Despite being in a Michelin starred restaurant, I definitley felt the need to dunk triple cooked chips in this cider creme sauce, and DAMN it was good!

For dessert, we ordered tipsy cake, which we ordered with our starters as it takes 40 minutes to make! It was the kind of cake that Granny would make and reminded me of a sticky toffee pudding with its caramelised glaze and moist sponge. We also ordered the nitrogen ice cream, mainly for the dramatic spectacle. The mobile ice cream cart was driven to our table and a waiter creates the ice cream in front of you whilst smoke cascades from his whisking hands. The unbelievably creamy ice cream is served in a sugared cone (there is no delicate way to eat something so delicious) and smothered in sprinkles of your choice.

All in all, the service was impeccable, food fun and to the highest quality, and an ambience that was high quality without being pretentious. Although I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it, I do not intend on going back; it was an experience rather than just dinner, and one you don't need again to appreciate.

The well groomed staff leaves nothing to chance when it comes to creating an unforgettable dining experience.

Broth of lamb is one of my favourites among the starters. It’s a fun mix of flavours and textures. The lamb consommé has nice intense flavours. The egg, cooked for 1.5 hours in 61°C, achieves this semi-solid yolk that I don’t have patience or equipment to do at home. It mixes well in with the broth together with the herbs that gives some kick to the dish.

We shared a second starter, the Meat Fruit. This is the signature dish at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal and most likely the best selling one. While being a very good dish in all aspects I think it’s the playfulness that makes it so successful. Hidden beneath the orange mandarin jelly skin is a smooth and rich parfait made of a wonderful blend of foie gras, chicken livers, white port, brandy, ruby port and Madiera. As hinted by the ingredients it is quite a rich dish. The parfait is very smooth and doesn’t feel too heavy. Crispy smoky char-grilled sour dough bread was served on the side.

The Spiced Pigeon with Ale and Artichokes was another nice dish. The sous-vide prepared pigeon was perfectly cooked pink. Went very well with artichokes and the ale sauce.

Tipsy Cake is a quite straight forward dessert. Baked Brioche is baked together with brandy and Sauternes. The result? A boozy soft cake soaked in sweetness. With it comes spit roasted pineapple. It’s a guilty treat if you like rich and more heavy desserts.

The Tipsy Cake used to be my favourite favourite dessert at Dinner but now I prefer the finesse of the Taffety Tart. It’s a beautifully assembled dessert with fennel, candied lemon, crystallised rose petals, apple and caramel jelly.

The hype around Mr Blumenthal's Dinner meant that it was impossible to secure a reservation for the night-time meal, so I settled for a Sunday lunch. One advantage of arriving in daylight hours is the view out over Hyde Park - necessary as the room is a little corporate for a romantic meal a deux. But we are seated by a large window and romance is saved.

It wouldn't be a Heston restaurant with some quirks thrown in, no normal eating here, no sirreee, our waiter explains a little about the concept of Dinner - it's based on Monsieur Blumenthal's interest in the styles & techniques of cooking over the past 500 years. Well it's less strange than an obsession with Alice in Wonderland, so off we go.

The Meat Fruit had to be done and it lived up to every piece of hype I've ever read about it. Technically, it is pate served shaped into an orange with some crunchy sourdough toast. It's so silky and so smooth you could quite easily I think drink it through a straw. If in old age, I lose my teeth, I want a steady supply of this stuff to see me through.

Husband has opted for the scallops with cucumber ketchup (Whatever that is) and while it is very nice, it just can't compete with the fruity meatiness. Where is the scallop coral though?

Choosing mains was a little bit of a struggle, I like my mains to actually sound tasty and not just have to rely on a hefty dose of Heston-faith. There's just no way that Powdered Duck Breast sounds appetising, but I'm a little contrary and order it anyway. Thankfully when it arrives, it's not the freeze-dried jerky style duck I had expected although in hindsight, it's probably unlikely that freeze-drying had been invented c. 1670 when this dish first came to light. It seems Powdering was the old Brining. Whatever they've done to it, it is goood. Moist and rich and just very well cooked. No funny business here.

Husband has opted for Slow Cooked Pork belly (Now that's a sensible dish name, say it as it is peeps) and he's won in the ordering lottery I think, the pork is so well cooked it just falls apart at the hint of knife pressure and again there's no trickery, just well cooked hearty food. Am I a little disappointed there isn't aren't any little fun quirks so far? Truthfully, yes. It's one of the reasons I'm here, the food is great but I'm missing the spice of Heston.

If you want Tipsy cake for dessert, you must order it with your mains as it takes some time to cook and talk like that is just a excuse for me to be greedy, so of course it's added to the order. It's a sort of cross between custard and bread and butter pudding with a crunch sugary coating and a side of roasted pineapple. It clearly meets with Husband's approval as it's demolished in a few swift mouthfuls with scant regard to my protests of only managing one bite before it disappeared.

I've opted for the chocolate bar, a hunk of chocolate under a fine layer of passionfruit jam (a little too subtle) and some fabulous ginger ice cream to clear that palate. As we are feasting on our desserts, a little touch of Heston's molecular passion comes out in the form of an old fashioned ice cream cart churning out ice creams on cones. It's a bit of fun in a very serious room, but I'm glad we've stuck to our desserts.

A lovely little touch at the end - a nod to our celebrating, we are offered a shot of molten Earl Grey chocolate and rich crumbly biscuit to dunk. Deeelightful. We'll definitely need to walk off the excesses now.

A great meal - which was expected after my experience years ago at The Fat Duck. Love the ambience and food. Certainly not as uppity as some of the restaurants in the area, given its location at the Mandarin Oriental!

There's been a lot of anticipation around the table we had reserved at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal - a one star Michelin restaurant located in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel adjacent to Knightsbridge tube station.
I think a lot of this stemmed from the contestants from Masterchef: The Professionals having the kitchen doors of The Fat Duck welcome them in to both witness and replicate the wonders that take place in its vicinity - this is another of Heston's restaurants located in Bray, Berkshire and opened in 1995 (that long ago? I know). Its three Michelin stars has also seen it voted the best restaurant in the world in 2005. I was transfixed to the box and social media was rife with both gushing adoration over the molecular gastronomy on display, and outright disdain at what many view as a pretentious concept with science having no place in the kitchen. And I'll admit, a few moons ago I used to think along similar lines. However, his ever increasing TV presence and feedback from friends of colleagues who have met the man himself, he actually seems like a nice guy - not pretentious at all. And this Masterchef episode got me very excited about the experience that both he and his establishments are looking to give their clients.

Contrary to its name, Dinner serves both dinner and lunch and is viewed as the larger, more accessible, centrally located little sister of The Fat Duck. The menu is inspired by historic British gastronomy and this is represented by every item on it being accompanied by the year that the dish first came to be. I was fortunate enough to have the week off work and my two lovely acquaintances, Mel and Lea, were able to wangle a free afternoon, so we decided to opt for a slightly boozy and extended girlie lunch on Thursday.

There is an a la carte available but the set menu is a good deal - three courses at £36. Set lunch menus at high-end restaurants are a fantastic way to sample the delights the establishment has on offer, without having to fork out for the higher prices that come with an evening meal. However, quite often the lunch will only be available during weekdays as is the case at Dinner. If you happen to work centrally then it's something that is well worth making a regular treat - as EatLikeaGirl does very well in her Posh Lunch Club.

The restaurant is spacious and in fact quite larger than I expected, able to accommodate 126 covers at any one time. There are floor to ceiling glass walls with one side providing a wonderful view into Hyde Park and another providing full view of the kitchen and the unique pulley system they have in place which serves to rotate the spit on an open fire. We were seated next to the kitchen allowing us to periodically glance at the numerous chefs during their stages of preparation and cooking.

Our very warm and approachable waiter explained the concept of the restaurant, talked us through the menus and with the most minimal of arm twisting enticed us to begin with an aperitif in the form of a glass of sparkling wine which came recommended and was in fact delicious - a first for me as I usually don't care for liqueur from white grapes. We placed our orders from the two options for each course from the set lunch menu, and between the three of us covered everything on it. Always a great excuse to dip the fork into the plate of your companions.

Our sourdough bread was delivered with some lightly salted butter - this was in our opinion far too hard and crunchy to eat without having to hide the mess your mouth was making in an attempt to masticate it. A passable situation to be in when with good friends, but I can't imagine this to be the case if your visit is part of a business lunch, which many were clearly there for.
Regardless, our starters soon arrived and mine was the Lemon Salad (c. 1730) - smoked artichoke, goats curd and candy beetroot. Beautiful on the plate and the freshness from the citrus hit the nose before even bringing the fork to my mouth. The sharp complimented the creamy cool goats curd wonderfully, with regular interjections of bitterness from the leaves on the plate. For any that know me, citrus and sourness in general is one of my most favourite flavours so my starter went down a treat, even if it didn't quite have a 'wow' factor.

Mel and Lea opted for the Dressed Snails (c. 1884) as their starter - a notably beautiful and autumnal looking dish quite arresting in the quality of natural colours presented on the plate. Both burgandy and golden yellow beetroot against the vibrant greens from the parsley sauce and samphire, it was quite the picture.

There is only one flavour in the world that I find very hard to embrace and I actively avoid - it is that of aniseed. Liquorice, fennel, fennel seeds, sambuka, Ouzo, Raki and anything else along those lines is a glaring and flashing no no. It's a huge shame though as fennel looks so incredibly appetising - I just cannot stomach the flavour of aniseed. The mains on offer were duck and fish. When eating out, I will more often than not opt for the option I am least likely to cook at home and this is usually red meat - I try to regard it as more of a treat than a regular consumable. So in any other situation, I would have immediately opted for the duck. However, it was delivered with smoked confit fennel and so I swiftly avoided and instead opted for the Roast Ray Wing. As soon as our mains arrived and I sampled some of the duck that both Lea and Mel ordered, I realised this was a mistake. Out of the list of aniseed flavour bearing goods mentioned above, fennel is probably the least offensive and I really should have given it a go in such a reputable establishment - it was subtle and crunchy and the duck meat was beautifully sweet. Immediate bout of food envy at the table - dammit. Served with a silky potato mash, rich jus and complete with duck heart (umbles), I'm still kicking myself.

The fish dish was - ok. Whilst looking very attractive on the plate, I feel most of the flesh was slightly over cooked - more chewy rather than flaky. Working my way across from one side of the fillet to the other, the last forkful was undercooked - while the flesh was opaque there were strings of red blood in it which I'm almost certain shouldn't have been there. I pointed it out to the waiter who apologised and said he didn't know why that was there - to be honest I did expect him to return after showing it to the kitchen with a further apology or gesture of good will, but it wasn't mentioned again. For a Michelin star restaurant, I don't think this was acceptable. Despite this, the parsnip and butter milk purée was almost unrecognisable, it was that smooth. My brain was tasting parsnip but I was still trying to understand the journey it took to end up as this texture - very pleasing. The voluptuous brown butter sauce dotted with fat and juicy capers was also well received and did not over-power the fish.

My first dessert (yes first) was much more of a success. Once again, I am immediately drawn to the promise of fresh citrus on a menu and this did not disappoint. A fantastic combination of textures - crunchy sugar crystals topped with a quinelle (I learnt that from Masterchef) of mandarin and thyme sorbet - oh I can still smell it as I type. This was alongside a type of sticky and soft orange flavoured bread, with wafer thin crispy segments of mandarin perching on top. It was very good indeed, looked wonderful and a fantastic way to clean the palette

Mel chose the prune and tamarind tart of which I of course sampled. Whilst a simple looking dish, the skill in obtaining perfection and elegance in a tart is no mean feat and was executed very well, with perfect pastry, smooth set custard and a caramelised top. And again proving to me that whilst flavour combinations may not immediately entice in print, they can and often do pleasantly surprise as was the case here - prune and tamarind not being something I would immediately opt for but it was in fact delightful.

The same waiter that persuaded us to treat ourselves to sparkling wine as well as the usual bottle of red, also enticed us to opt for a second dessert and final course of ice cream made at the table. We had spotted the spectacle taking place at other tables and I think had already made up our minds that we wanted it at ours. This is the sort of molecular gastronomy you expect from a Heston restaurant so it was difficult to turn away. It consisted of a manual hand-turned mixer being wheeled up to the table with liquid nitrogen being poured into some vanilla custard and churned by the machine. After a few seconds and evaporated nitrogen bellowing out from the mixing bowl, the ice cream was complete. We had a scoop in an ice cream cone with freeze dried raspberries and popping candy as our toppings. At £12 each it was probably a bit pricey for what it was, but you of course also pay for the theatre.

All in, the lunch was a very pleasant experience and I would recommend it. This was down to a combination of the service which was excellent, my companionship which was of its usual very high standard, and the dishes that were good. I feel I was a little unlucky with my main choice in that I missed out on the better dish, and the issue with my fish fillet. It's also worth noting that the options available for vegetarians are decidedly mediocre according to a colleague who visited for an evening meal with his vegetarian wife. But that aside, it was a very good lunch. Very good, but certainly not mind-blowing (and still not as good as Lima which is my most favourite restaurant I've eaten at of recent months), but that's something I certainly would expect from somewhere like The Fat Duck. I just need to find the funds and try to secure a table there first - both easier said than done.

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and it was wonderful - however I sent my patents here for their anniversary and they had a fabulous time! They gave them a hand-written card of congratulations, a beautifully iced dessert with "happy anniversary" written in chocolate and they were treated like royalty - obviously the food was amazing but it was a true experience. But I was so full I couldn't finish the yummy chocolate ganache with earl grey and lavender biscuit which was brought over with our coffees :-(

I would recommend this to everyone who loves food and wants to treat themselves! And have a Ginny Hendricks cocktail at the bar beforehand - they aren't on the new menu but they will still make them. Really yummy!!

There’s only a few times a year I would willingly go all out and splurge on food, my birthday or a special occasion. Since it was my good friend birthday coming up I booked us a table 2 months in advance.

Dinner by Heston is hidden inside the Mandarin hotel in London, minutes away from Knightsbridge underground.

We were seated on a spacious round table, which could easily fit 8 diners. The waitress on hand was clearly knowledgeable and passionate about the food. She explained the dishes we question in such detail she could have been a spokeswomen for the restaurant.

For starters I just had to try the meat fruit, for mains I went for the chicken cooked for lettuce and desserts well it had to be the highly raved tipsy cake. When I ordered the tipsy cake she joked, “So you want to get tipsy?”

Dinner by Heston revolves around the historic British gastronomy menus. Each dish has the circa in brackets. (c1xxx).

The bread and butter given to us before our feast, was fantastic the only criticism I had for this one, was that the crust was super tough to chew it actually ripped some of the skin of my lips.

Meat Fruit (c.1500)

Mandarin, chicken liver & foie gras parfait, grilled bread
£16.00

When the meat fruit arrived, I was very excited examined every angle of the perfectly shaped dimpled skin sphere, intimidating a mandarin with a gem stem sticking out.

In a skilfully fashion, I carefully cut into the gel mandarin and spread it on the grill toast. The super smooth chicken liver melted in the mouth, bursting with flavour with an orange kick. My only compliant here, there should have been two slices of grilled bread, as I finished the bread within two quarters of the meat fruit.

Tipsy Cake (c.1810)Spit roast pineapple

The headliner of the meal was the tipsy cake, mini boozy custard brioche bread in an iron cast pot, accompanied with a slice of spit-roasted pineapple. It was pure indulgence; the hot creamy rum filled brioche assaulted my nose. The bread was so fresh out of the oven piping hot, like a fluffy pillow with a crispy top melted into my mouth. The caramelised pineapple slice was insane; I just wanted more and more of the tipsy cake.

This was the second of our visits to Heston Blumenthal's London outpost (the first was 2 years ago).

Unusually for a restaurant of this standard, the kitchen is entirely open plan, with the entire hard working crew exposed for everyone to see. The menu is based entirely on extensive research of British dinner dishes throughout history (the oldest dating back to 14th Century), updated using the kind of technical wizardry you'd expect from the man who came up with nitro-poached green tea and whiskey wine gums.

The first of the starters was the Rice and Flesh (c. 1390), the oldest dish on the menu. Flavour-wise I think it was the better of the two starters we tried. The tender risotto rice was bathed in a rich golden yellow colour, perfumed with that wonderful exotic floral aroma. It by no means dominated over the 'flesh' part however. The meat used was calf tail cooked in red wine. The meat was beautifully cooked, its full bodied flavour boosted by the red wine.

The other starter was the famous Meat Fruit. It's a great dish, theatrical in the way that wouldn't look out of place at the Fat Duck. It does stand out somewhat from the other dishes, which are slightly more orthodox (whilst still beautiful of course) in their presentation.

It wouldn't mean much if it didn't taste any good but it really does. It's not too heavy, the chicken liver parfait and foie gras that make up the filling are incredibly airy and light (volume-wise) whilst still having that rich, satisfyingly fatty flavour. The subtle mandarin flavour worked really well in adding a very light acidity to cut through the fattiness. The dish was served with grilled bread to spread the parfait over.

My main was the spiced pigeon with ale and artichokes (c.1780). I have to say this was by some distance the best pigeon dish I've had. Clearly sous vide cooked, the benefits are immediately obvious here as the flesh managed to hold an astonishing amount of moisture, whilst still having a full, but not overly-gamey flavour.

The second meat main we ordered was the Black Foot Pork Chop (c.1860) with Hispi cabbage, lardo, ham hock and Robert sauce. I didn't try it myself, but I was very reliably told that it was also excellent, juicy but lean whilst full of typically Heston-esque Maillard-caramelised flavours. It's a very evocatively English dish, something you'd more likely find at a proper old school country pub rather than a flashy 5 star London hotel.

The last main we ordered was a fish course - the roast halibut (c.1830) with leaf chicory and cockle ketchup. Compared to the level of cooking in the meat dishes, I didn't find it to be quite as spectacular. Don't get me wrong it was well cooked enough and nicely seasoned but it didn't quite reach the same heights as the meat courses.

For desserts we ordered the brown bread ice cream (c.1830, pictured at the top of the page), a favourite from our previous visit and the taffety tart. The brown bread ice cream was as lovely as ever, a proper English style dessert with its heavy, toffee/caramel flavours. I could see why it would be a bit much for some though, as it is quite overwhelming in many ways. The taffety tart (c.1660) was much more adventurous in its use of flavours, covering every range of taste with its apple, rose, fennel and vanilla ice cream. The individual components were all great, but it was the flavour combination of all the toppings and ingredients that made this dish shine.

The last of the desserts was the nitro ice creams trolley. The ice cream was ice crystal-free and super smooth. The toppings are great too, I went for the sugar coated fennel seeds (very Indian flavours, reminiscent of desserts in Delhi as a kid) but the crackling candy topping that Nathalie had was delightfully fun too.

Overall, we had a great time again at Dinner by Heston.

"Dinner" (hate the name) has gathered an incredible amount of publicity and accolades. The kitchen is headed by Ashley Palmer-Watts, he worked with Heston Bluementhal at The Fat Duck for nine years in the capacity of Group Executive Chef. The restaurant located in the Mandarin Orient Hotel was given a £4 million make over prior to its launch - it looks good, but not stunning. With that sort of money I expected this flag ship restaurant to have a bit more glamour, I found it to be strangly out of sync with the rest of the Hotel.

One of the more famous dishes designed especially for "Dinner" is the Meat Fruit, so we had to have that, it was a perfectly fine chicken liver parfait cleverly shaped like a Mandarin Orange in homage to the hotel. I then ordered the Hay Smoked Mackerel starter with lemon salad, Gentlemen's Relish and olive oil. I found it to be a tasty and refreshing dish. For main course I chose the Pigeon, which was delicious, but in retrospect did not really justify the price which was actually more than the cost of the entire set menu. The standout dish for me was my dessert choice - no not the famous Tipsy cake with pineapple. I was a bit more adventurous. I went for the Brown Bread Ice-Cream, even though I had been warned and perhaps a little put off by it being described as having savoury elements. It was unusual, but for me it really worked with the yeasty Ice-Cream contrasting well with the caramel sauce and oats. I found it really quite moreish.

My companion was less successful with his choices. He started with the Rice and Flesh which combined flavours that he did not particularly enjoy. He also ordered the Powdered duck. The meat was moist with subtle flavours but he did not like the contrasting hard fennel. He then had what he described as the "Krispy Kreme" doughnut like Tipsy cake with spit roasted pineapple. The Tipsy cake was OK but the smoky after taste from the pineapple chunks was less successful.

We finished the meal on a "high" note though with a small cup of Earl Grey ganache and some caraway biscuits. This was rather playful in that it conjured up the taste of accidentally picking up and drinking a long discarded cup of cold tea - until the sugar rush kicked in! This sweet treat seemed to be closer in concept to the type of food served at The Fat Duck than to Dinners historically inspired menu.

One the whole the meal was fine, but we did come away a bit disappointed. It just did not live up to the hype. So in conclusion I have to say unfortunately Dinner is not somewhere that I would rush to return too. Indeed if in Knightsbridge, I would be more likely to make a return visit to Koffmans or perhaps even Bar Boulud.

Shared an amazing Chefs table tasting (with wine accompaniment) experience with our fabulous friends. I have to say I was a little dubious about the value of this tasting / Dinner experience before the day and was apprehensive about the day hitting my expectations as a result of the price tag. I needn't have worried. 3 hours 40 spent at the table. Regular introductions to the courses and wines and interaction with the team their. Got to see and hear about the creation of each course. The food itself was sublime. An amazing experience. If you get the opportunity then you should jump at it!

Couldn't of asked for a greater final meal on my first international trip. Was extremely excited to try this place and it did not disappoint which was awesome. Really great tasting menu and wine paring and maybe one day I will be back in London and go here again!

Absolutely loved this place. The new concept of choosing one's dining experience by placing the corresponding cards on the table was a fantastic idea. We chose "the maverick" and heard some intreguing stories about the history of our dishes. Our food was delicious too. For starters we had the meat fruit and the truffle which came with some delicious bread. The meat fruit is an absolute must try here. The bread one receives in the beginning could do with a little more thought. Our roast cod and roast turbot were fantastic too, however we felt the side dishes were lacking in flavour and the carrots were on the overcooked side. Ironically we were really craving some ketchup with the fries. When we asked for some ketchup, we were surprised just how quickly it was brought to us. The green sauce on the Turbot was delicious however I felt that the sauces on my cod dish were definitely on the salty side. Our tipsy cake was the perfect end to our meal.

Was excited to try this out and booked far in advance. The bread they gave us was cold which was quite off putting. The food got better as we ate through the meal. The meat fruit which I was anticipating was alright. The stars of the meal were the desserts.

Dinner by Heston is not just a dining experience; it's an enlightening journey for the senses. The service was exemplary, and the staff's genuine passion for food shone through in their detailed explanations of each dish. The signature Meat Fruit dish lived up to its reputation, transcending my usual reservations about chicken liver with its delightful natural sweetness. The salmon and scallops were flawlessly cooked, and the beef fillet left an indelible memory with its caramelized perfection. The desserts were a visual feast, presented with impeccable artistry. The only drawback was the choice of furniture, as the seat and table design fell short of expectations. It reminded me of my initial visit to the restaurant for breakfast several years ago. Nonetheless, the culinary brilliance overshadowed this minor flaw. Dinner by Heston is an experience that broadens horizons and delights the palate.

Definitely worth going to try at least once. Service was exceptional, although have had better elsewhere. We had the tasting menu it was filling and very well executed although a few dishes we more salty than we'd personally have liked. Decor has some nice touches too. Some love bits I haven't shared so they are a suprise. Would love to go again in the future.

This restaurant has 2 Michelin Stars and it certainly met the expectations. This was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. They start by letting you pick the type of experience that you want to have. The options are: The Adventurer, The Guide, and The Maverick. We went with The Maverick, which provided us a description of the food and the story behind it. This option is great if you want the history of the ingredients and meals that you are eating. We let the server pick our wine and it was a great option. We had several meals, my favorites were the Rice and Flesh and The Tipsy Cake. (Note: The tipsy cake takes an hour to prepare, so you have to order it right away). Everything was cooked to perfection, flavorful, and the presentation was spectacular. The service was great and we never had an empty glass. I plan on coming back if I ever visit London again.

Excellent coronation tasting menu with full explanation on the history of the menu. The chicken pot pie was small, but particularly very tasty. The wine pairing was superb and enjoyable. Waiters and waitresses were attentive and gave full attention.

Based in the charming Mandarin Orient Hotel, Dinner offers excellent dining in a spacious setting with some interesting touches on the service...I won't ruin any surprises but it was whimsical and enjoyable. I had had my eye on Dinner for a while but was always more interested in the meat fruit and tipsy cake dishes than in any of the mains. When I saw the £59 three course lunch menu, I had to give it a try. I paid the £5 supplements for the meat fruit and cheese and crackers, plus an extra £22 for the tipsy cake (had to be done). The total bill for three courses plus the tipsy cake, a glass of Krug, and coffee came to around £130 with service. Key points: - the meat fruit is excellent and is an absolute must try for anyone coming here. For pâté/parfait lovers, this is as good as it gets. - the lamb was tender, the sauce and cucumber ketchup were excellent but the lamb had a little too much fat for my liking...this had been nicely rendered but still too much of it. I'd prefer a leaner cut, but still lovely overall. - The cheese and crackers were very good, though the sesame ones were too thin for my liking (I ended up putting them on top of the cheese), but the apricot and pistachio ones were perfect. - The service was mostly friendly and very knowledgeable, though slightly rough around the edges at times. I noticed at other tables that one or two waiters would place something on the table without speaking or even looking at the customers. - The tipsy cake was sweeter than I would have guessed but was balanced perfectly with the pineapple on the side. - Wine prices were pretty dear, with the cheapest glass (125ml) priced at £17 and then rising quickly from there. For the record, this is a higher starting line than I have seen at several triple starred Michelin restaurants in London, but the special, limited time deal on the Krug made up for it (£20 a glass).

Love the meat fruit and pineapple tipsy cake! Always enjoyed visiting this restaurant for these 2 dishes. As usual, the food was delicious and staff was polite (could have been warmer). This visit was interesting because additional fun facts/introduction were shared when the dishes were served. Came this time for my husband’s birthday, and it was nice that they gifted chocolate. However I did not know they couldn’t provide a candle along with the tipsy cake. Instead one would have to preorder their cake which would come with a candle. It was a small issue but I thought that could have been made clearer at booking. Overall, still a lovely dinner and would visit again.

I came to Dinner by Heston Blumenthal for my birthday. It was a very special experience. The meat fruit starter does an amazing job of fooling the eye. The chicken liver parfait dipped in mandarin flavored coating paired perfectly with the grilled bread. Rice & Flesh was next. It is amazing how much flavor there was in the beef cheek cooked in red wine. Floating in a sea of saffron risotto, it was for me, the most satisfying dish of the entire meal. The main course was salmon in champaign sauce with caviar. Although beautify presented, it was my least favorite dish. I suspect I'm more used to the taste of farmed salmon, so the much more pronounced and strong fish flavor of the wild version was off-putting and I also did not like the flavor of the champaign sauce. I finished the meal with a complimentary (surprise!) ganache tart. Overall, the restaurant is top notch. The atmosphere, the waiters, even the "card experience" are aimed at delivering the best dining experience.

Excellent dinner! We went for the Royal Cooking menu, celebrating my partner’s birthday. The food really takes you back in time, tastes authentic and everything was delicious. Highlight: the chicken coronation tart (photo attached). Amazing cocktails, we are definitely coming back.

Really worthwhile trip coming with my sister and after watching Heston on various tv shoes growing up, this was a fun little lunch! Was quite surprised how left alone you are service wise but we weren’t too bothered as we were too excited for the food!

When in London, making a reservation for dinner by Heston Blumenthal is a must. Take the notion of stuffy fine dining out of your mind and get ready for a fun, entertaining, educational & delicious experience. You can choose from 3 ways to be served, with playful cards. And server will share interesting facts about the food and Heston’s inspiration. The presentation is wonderful and so instagram worthy.. but honestly, every bite is delicious. This is not a picky eater kind of restaurant or if you have a child/children who only want fries , not for them. Make sure to ask for a seat near facing Hyde Park. And the ice cream, which is not on the menu, is a must and made to order. Overall it’s worth the expense to treat yourself here!
