Just a stone’s throw away from my office popped up Popolo. With new openings on the increase around the City and in particular, expanding into the East, there are no shortage of great places for a bite to eat. Whilst Popolo is not reinventing the art of Italian dining as a whole, what it offers is a quick, informal but wholesome dining experience.
For our quick lunchtime visit we were the first in the door. The team where still polishing off their set-up, Chef’s finishing their mis en place and we reveled in it’s shiny brand newness. The layout, reminds me of Barrafina. Bar top dining with a voyeuristic view of the Chef brigade as they rustle up gorgeous dishes from a small and well thought out menu.
I am a fan of bar top foodie places as it lends itself well to solo dining, a pastime I actively champion. You may not always have a partner or group of friends with you, so it is important to feel comfortable and this is one of those places. I think at some stage I have to do that “Guide to solo dining” which I have been mulling over for ages. Anyway, I digress, back to Popolo. With these things, there is always a background, a curated press release of sorts to wet your appetite. I like to go in cold turkey when I can. That way I have no expectation and am not influenced by others. You will see that in my not so complimentary review of Padella which the whole world and it’s mother seems to dig. Personally, I think Popolo poops all over Padella.
For our express visit mid week, we opted for a starter of pimento padron (a little more Spanish than Italian) as well as some fried coated olives and morita chilli with labne. For our main courses, I had ravioli with ricotta and sage butter, from the specials my companion had pappardelle ragu. Both were great, in particular the gorgeous beef portion of ragu and perfectly al dente pastas.
Popolo is definitely be on my list for when I want an Italian lunch.
What a joy to finally get to eat here. As is mentioned it is great to get seated at the bar and watch the chefs at work (mesmerising) and you can watch you dish being made with such passion. Everything is made to the highest of quality with great ingredients. Such great balances of flavours.
Very nice and cozy place we met for dinner. The concept of the restaurant is to share different dishes to try as many as possible. It is an Italian fusion cuisine specializing in fish and shellfish. We decided to order two pastas and the scallops. The experience and favours were 10/10 and the treatment received by the service was incredible.
Great vibe, nice staff, good food! But I think they change the menu once in a while so there were other dishes we wanted to try but didn't.
Superb! Recommend to sit at the bar top for a front seat to see the magic happen in the kitchen. Was also a palate expanding experience for the kids :-)
Honestly this is one of the best restaurants in London. Amazing food, service and an incredibly creative menu all cooked to perfection. I’ve been here 5 times now and always exceeds my expectations. You have to go.
Great food, fantastic and genuinely friendly service from people who are great at what they do and care about what they do. Everything we ate was fantastic. Our two favourites were the honey pannacotta and the pork agnolotti.
One of our favourite restaurants in London, it’s truly unique. The chefs were, of course, on point, but the gorgeous and most attentive Reem was the star of the night, we felt super looked after.
The food was very good. Friendly waiters. Wait was not too long. We had a booking.
The menu changes regularly. The highlight for me was the agnolotti – pork cheek & porcini butter. The pasta and the meat were cooked perfectly, and the accompanying sauce was amazing as well. The other two I really liked were the octopus with paprika and the calamari with the white sauce - very tasty as well. The crab spaghetti were alright. For dessert, the rosemary, olive oil, almond cake was a very good blend of savoury and sweet tastes (I was excited when I saw it was with olive oil). Overall, strong recommendation for the place!
Service is top. We changed the ordered dishes twice and the staff showed no impatience.
Quite cool to sit at the kitchen bar watching how they cook. Simple and smooth.
Dishes are ok, good but not really top notch I have to be honest. For instance, octopus could be more crispy. Tuna steak and Nduja cod were only cooked to medium rare. I am fine with raw fish, but the taste of well done is still better in my opinion.
Lobster spaghetti is not really Al dente. But risotto is amazing! I would recommend that dish alone. And their focaccia is good.
Pricey but good place to friends catch up.
Our party or 4 men on a weekend trip ate here last weekend and I could not have been more glad that we did; indeed, it was the best meal I've had in long memory. I had been teasing the barman, who I later learned was also the chef and owner, about the menu and he informed me that it was an authentic Italian menu "but with a twist." The only twist that I could determine was that the ingredients are hyper fresh and seasonal and the dishes are created with loving care and hyper ingenuity. Elegant simplicity.
The 4 of us order the entire menu - 13 small plates- and each one was better than the last. If someone pointed a gun to my head and forced my to choose my favorite I could name any one of the dishes, but that would be a lie. It was a lot of food for the 4 of us but just shy of too much. Our meal was then followed by 3 shared desserts. Our volume of food was indulgent but just a hair shy of gratuitous.
Popolo is a treasure and I would dine here again and again, and so should you.
I absolutely loved this little fusion restaurant.
The waitress was really charming! She told us about the background of the chief ( Italian Spanish and English), which is the his aspiration from.
It’s a really lovely bistro vibe😍.
Deep fried cheese is must try!
Burrata was averagely good, the sweet pickles were a bit too savory to hide the milky flavors of the main actor Burrata. Might have be better if the sweetness were more subtle and not so savory.
Bread was really nice.
My favorite was the beef cheek tortellini. Really yummy. The strong flavor of beef cheeks dissolved perfectly in the savory soup sauce. I even finished the sauce.
I expected the octopus to be stronger in the smoky profile, which might denote the flame wasn’t strong enough to achieve the smoky crispy outside Bur juicy tender inside.
Chocolate cake was averagely good.
Absolutely love this place! Delicious food every time, and it’s amazing to watch the chefs cooking at the kitchen bar. The staff were all so friendly, and the atmosphere was lovely and relaxed.
Photos show the nduja scallops, white truffle taglierini, crab tagliatelle & burnt honey pannacotta - all highly recommended!
Food is superb. It’s a great place to come with friends to share a few dishes. For me, the highlights are Crunchy olives, agnolotti with pork cheek and octopus. Some great wine to try as well. We will come back for more.
Amazing food and service - we visited twice in a month. Cauliflower, octopus and pastas were all so great!! We really appreciated the chef's flexibility in altering the menu and accommodating dietary needs of some of us. Cannot recommend enough!!
All the experience is been absolutely perfect, from the warm welcome at the entrance to the chef recommendation and the attentive service and exhaustive explanation of food and wines , all the flavours were extremely well balanced and an explosion of taste!!!
As Italian I can spend a special word for the homemade pasta that took me back to my grandma house without move from my stool on the kitchen bar.
Thank you, will be back soon!
This place was really awesome. The staff were super accommodating and not only did the food taste great, the waiter personally wrote down each item that could be made vegetarian or vegan. If you’ve read my other reviews you’ll know that’s not always the case. My favorites were the house made focaccia bread - super delicious and moist, ravioli - silky thin pasta, tagliatelini - great texture and delicious sauce. I would come back in a heart beat.
One of the best dinners we had this year!Only minus is the limited space. The service was quick and the taste of the food was exceptional!A great selection of wines as well!Staff were very interested in offering us a great experience and also kind.Definitely recommend it!
