After waiting a long time to go here and hearing so many amazing reviews I was really looking forward to eating here. However, I was a bit disappointed. The atmosphere was very nice and I’m not saying the food was bad, I just had higher expectations. Maybe I made bad choices on the night so I’ll need to go back and try again to see if it was just a one off...

My ex-wife left me in this restaurant, so it was a perfect catharsis to go back there a few years after our divorce with my boyfriend, to toast her death in a skiing accident that spring :)

Went for a lunch on a friend's recommendation after a visit to the tailor.

At first, the old school interior left me a little disappointed, but the food was everything I'd heard about and much more.

The service was very good, not too obtrusive and lots of time to enjoy each course, but attentive when required.

I hope to become a regular and persuade others to share it with me on their first visits.

This restaurant seems to court news almost as well as some politicians.  In these turbulent times, with surprises at every corner and seemingly impossible situations coming to pass, I thought that I might as well live a little.  While the iron is hot, or perhaps before inflation takes hold of this most pricey establishment, it seemed a sensible time to visit before things became even more dear.

I first ate at Le Gavroche almost three years to the day from this meal. It was at a time when this blog was a distant dream and we ate for pleasure only.  Oh, how I miss those days.  It still stands as my favourite ever meal; perhaps not the best food, but certainly the best overall experience.  There was, and still is, something uniquely special about walking underneath the famous signage, through the heavy doors, down the stairs and into that dimly lit basement dining room.  There is ceremony with every nudge of a chair and pouring of wine, and touch of class at every detail with custom made table sculptures, plates, and silverware.  We ate chicken with parmesan risotto, drank our body weight in wine and overindulged Michael Roux Jnr himself in person at our excessive praise of the soufflé suissesse – a long standing stalwart of the menu here so light it threatened to drift back up those stairs and off into the clouds.  I consider myself lucky enough to have eaten at Birmingham’s five Michelin starred restaurants on many occasions but our pursuit outside of my home town has never led us back to the same place.  Now, with Phil Howard departing from The Square there was only ever one option for a celebratory return meal:  Three months back we decide to hammer the phone lines at 9am and secure a table at Le Gavroche.

Lovely lunch at Le Gavroche. On learning of a visit to London l was lucky enough to book a table at LG the day they opened reservations for May - ie three months in advance. Lunch with friends was as spectacular as hoped, albeit with issues on arrival. For this reason l have rated LG 4.5 rather than 5.

LG gets its name from the child street urchin in Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. Under the care first of Michel Roux Snr and now MR Jr, it has obtained three and now maintains two Michelin stars.

Our arrival was not auspicious. The lady at reception was not hospitable. Perhaps groups of street urchins do walk off the street in Mayfair and expect to be seated for lunch. Perhaps she just misunderstood my accent. But the response was cool and distant and dimmed our experience. That kind of 'welcome' is not appropriate in any hospitality business and certainly not in a venue of this calibre. The salon size is also unhelpful for group arrivals. It did not augur well.

Happily, after that little but notable hiccup, everything was spectacular. LG catered for my friends' dietary requirements with skill and grace. The business lunch is excellent value - £56.40 for three amazing courses, a half bottle of selected wines, water, coffee and petit fours. For five of us it came to £400 before tip with a luscious champagne.

Gorgeous amuse bouches arrived - my favourite was the salmon roe tart. I chose the lobster ravioli for entree, sublime and perfect parcels with exquisite flavours. Beautiful breads appeared with salted butter - simple and excellent. My main of panfried dory was equally wonderful. But nothing prepares you for the jolt of pleasure on seeing the elegant and enormous cheese trolley. I almost fainted with delight. With tea arrived a slim platter of petit fours - exceptional with the crystalised physalis my favourite of all.

Service was astoundingly good once we were past Mlle at the frontdoor. The Latvian waiter & twin Austrian maitres d' delighted.

This is the height of luxury in the beautiful dining room and worth saving up for.

There is a saying in football ‘Form is temporary, class is permanent’. I think this saying can also be applied to Le Gavroche. While there are plenty of other trendier, hipper, more fashionable restaurants that pop up every day in London, Le Gavroche has stood the test of time. In fact, the restaurant will be celebrating its 50th birthday next year. While other restaurants embrace modern techniques and try to reinvent the wheel, the philosophy at Le Gavroche is to stick true to their classic roots. I think in this day and age of sous vide cooking (which is a lot easier and leads to less wastage), many chefs have forgotten how good food can be when it is cooked the old-fashioned way – you know, like on the frying pan or in the oven.

Sometimes you really want to splurge and go all out. For this occasion, it was my partner’s birthday. I gave him a voucher for the tasting menu and wine pairings (x2 because I’m coming along too) at Le Gavroche, Michel Roux Jr.’s two-Michelin star restaurant. After seeing him on Masterchef and countless other tv shows, I decided we needed to give the restaurant a try. Plus I had done my cooking course with Monica earlier in the year (although by the time we got to the restaurant, she had moved on and is apparently starting her own venture that should be open sometime in 2016). He finally decided we should go in late January, and we paired it up with seeing a matinee of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.

We friends had dinner at this place few days ago and it was a great experience. Food was delicious and place was no so expensive. You totally get for what you pay. Menu was great because the kitchen really sophisticated, and a sequence of serving dishes is better to leave the opinion of the chef. Great wine list. An ideal place to meet friends in a comfortable atmosphere.

Perfect for a special treat. This restaurant oozes perfection in every way. The service was impeccable; the decor was rich and ornate, especially with the Bouvier sculptures thoughtfully placed throughout the restaurant. We did go for the degustation menu at the time and to be honest, I probably would not go for that again, as I became so full by the end of it. Their foie gras was excellent as was the duck and their desserts are a must, as they are a delight for the eyes, not just the taste buds. A very special restaurant that I hope to return to at some point in the future.

Superb experience. What a great surprise when having driven and not known exactly where I was going, to turn up outside a building covered in scaffolding and seeing the illuminated sign above the door stating that this was indeed one of the finest restaurants in the world. Not only is it one of the finest restaurants in the world, it's also home to one of the finest chefs in the world and one that I have the utmost respect for. What makes Le Gavroche stand out is that every ingredient of what makes an evening great was there in spades. I won't say that the food was the best I have ever had but the combination of the food, Michelle Roux, the service, the wine, the ambiance was, all together, enough to give this restaurant, or rather the experience 10 out of 10.

Like a mini break to Heaven. Had a wonderful treat of a lunch yesterday at Le Gavroche. It's one of those places where the world goes into suspended animation for a while until you emerge blinking into the light...clientele is hilarious, we must have been a third the average age, but twas fun guessing life stories. AND his royal Michelness himself came to talk to us (though we could think of nothing remotely witty or interesting to say to him and just babbled about it being beautiful in classic girlie crush way - which we both have, of course).

Nibbles were foie gras with caviar, and then a celeriac remoulade with mojama. Amuse bouche was a tiger prawn fried in something akin to Panko and a little dice of mango and chilli. I started with steak tartare with quail eggs and a truffle cream. GOD it was velvety goodness. Best thing I've eaten in the past 12 months. The steak just melted and it had exactly the right balance of acidity. The truffling was generous. We added a souffle suisseuse between courses, natch. Like God had perfumed his clouds with cheese. Incidentally, we asked for one to share with two spoons. They brought out two normal sized portions. We both thought, cripes, that'll be another £20 on the bill...but they only charged for one. How good is that?

Then a slightly bland though well cooked rock salmon on a potato/artichoke rosti with sauce choron (like bearnaise, with tomatoes) and lovely braised celery. My friend's duckling was much better, beautiful saucing. Then the cheese. Oh my lord the cheeeeeeese. Best looking and stored trolley I have seen in a long while. My friend's posh take on mint choc chip ice cream was also pronounced ace.

So, strongly recommend it. Service is stunningly competent too. We pigged out by having champagne to start, then the extra course, then a couple more glasses of wine in addition to the half bottle included per person...with service it came to about £80 each. But you could easily get away by sticking to the £48 deal, more than enough a) to eat b) to get the Gavroche experience.

Marvellousness.

The food at Le Gavroche is certainly tasty but I’ve had more inventive dishes elsewhere. With its two Michelin star price tag, it was ever so slightly disappointing. The cooking is undeniably restricted by its past. It’s a London institution that showcases the foundation on which fine dining has been built in this country. It can’t progress too far, it must remain largely the same as it’s always been but that’s its charming attraction. That’s why it’s packed from midday on a Monday. That’s why tables are still buzzing with merry guests at half 4 in the afternoon. That’s why it’s such a treat to spend time there; to escape the stresses of modern life. I could quite happily hibernate there for the whole of winter.

Le Gavroche opened in London in 1967, a famous collaboration between the Roux brothers. It was the first time that high-end, classic French cuisine had been offered in the capital, and it remains an influential establishment to this day. It maintains a classic, traditional French style, both in the surrounds, and it's food. As you would expect with any high end French restaurant, the service is second to none, with an accomodating and attentive staff.

Le Gavroche is an institution, originally opening back in 1967 (hope they've got something special planned for the big 50!) and currently holding 2 Michelin Stars. Despite his TV commitments, Michael Roux Jr currently oversees the kitchen and is often seen roaming the dining room greeting his customers, I'm devastated to say that unfortunately I didn't get to shake his hand or get a snap with him on this occasion but despite that minor blow I am pleased to confirm the entire dining experience was one of the finest I've enjoyed in this country.  The restaurant itself is hidden away on a backstreet in Mayfair, surrounded by residents' parking spaces filled with sports cars that i'm sure would have car nerds drooling into their pre-dinner glass of wine. The doorway to Le Gavroche is framed by a miniature hedgerow packed with flowers and it appears like an oasis to welcome you in and save you hustle and bustle tourist mayhem taking place around Hyde Park and general stench of money on the streets. After a pleasant greeting at the door, I was lead into the waiting room which had the lights turned down and immediately felt very reassuringly classy and traditional with lots of beautiful old furniture and paintings around the room. It was like  enough for 20 people or so, not a traditional bar by any means. Entertainment was provided by a table complete with pompous arseholes spouting off at the top of their voices about how their partner should've had a boob job, numerous lap dancing clubs they'd visited recently and how much money their children had made that year, not a group of men but several couples. All very tasteless and not exactly the sort of entertainment and human beings i'd hoped to be surrounded by to be honest.  We moved into a quiet corner and a couple of quick canapés appeared alongside drinks at the bar area and which appeared appealingly retro. I enjoyed a bottle of Roux Brew, the beer that Michael Roux Jr had recently commissioned for the restaurant. Aft

We both ordered the lamb neck on beans with wild garlic for our mains. Our first bites of the lamb were a little on the dry side but it soon gave way to pink, slightly fatty, tender meat. The bean and puree provided a worthy accompaniment, and there was some token green stuff to make us feel marginally healthier.

You would think that evening with an insurance broker would be a rather staid affair. You would be wrong. By way of illustration, I suspect that the other diners were not treated to pictures of a heavily-pregnant stomach, with a drawing of a face on it, the bellybutton acting as the mouth and the stomach moving, to create different expressions. I am sure that the broker’s partner will be delighted that I have seen this.

I was very fortunate to get a table for six guests at short notice at Le Gavroche last Friday night.

It was an opportunity to celebrate some forthcoming family birthdays and also for me, having recently dined at Parliament Square and at The Landau to experience the flagship Roux restaurant in London. We could not have been more pleased. It was a perfect evening.

First impression is important. The staff who greeted me on arrival and the use of the bar, with its thematic Les Miserables cocktails and reception area upstairs before dinner while waiting for my guests to arrive got me off to the best of starts.

The restaurant is elegant and I appreciated some of the rather old world niceties: there is no background music and only the hostess/host received the priced menus.

All the different dishes our group had were wonderful, great ingredients, beautifully prepared and presented in classic styles often with a characteristic twist.

This is definitely high-end fine dining and some dishes are quite expensive but the overall experience is very much worth it.

The wine list is comprehensive and I benefitted from reading it at the bar before dinner which saved a little time at the table, but the sommeliers were also knowledgeable and helpful.

It was impressive to see the chef patron, Michel Roux, visiting tables and greeting guests at opportune moments during service of multiple seatings.

It is a busy restaurant which runs like clockwork largely no doubt due to the excellent staff who collaborated very well.

I was here with my partner a couple of days back and had one of the most amazing dinners I've ever had. We were completely blown away by the taste of the food and the service by the waiters.
We had the tasting menu, that meant that we could try a couple of dishes before ordering them. We ordered around 5-6 of them and decided to order the Langoustine and snail dish. It was prepared brilliantly and tasted delicious. We ordered a couple of dishes for the main course, all of which were impeccable. This famous French restaurant lives up to its name in terms of both ambiance and food. The place is classy and chic. The rich interiors transport you into the 20th century and influence you. The food is cooked traditionally and is excellent in taste. The restaurant fulfills even the highest of expectations.

La Gavroche is a French/ English Restaurant located in Mayfair area.
The closest tube e station is Marble Arche.
The food in the restautant is more than amazing and venue inside is in acozy atmosphere with excellent services!
I want to recommend to try from the A La Carte Menu as a main the Lobster Mousse with Aquitaine Caviar or the Marinated Var Salmon with Lemon. For dessert would advice you to try the Apricot & Cointreau Souffle or the Strawberry Shortbread and Sorbet with Vanilla Ice cream.

Nowhere better for the fixed price lunch menu, service and food the very best. This is the benchmark for how a restaurant should be run. They have it all including a celebrity chef who takes time out with his customers. Excellent house wines and fantastic wine cellar with the serious bottles!

Apologies in advance for the quantity and quality (or lack thereof) of photos in this post. We were the youngest diners in the restaurant by at least twenty years, and with my fellow patrons not being of the blogging and tweeting generation, I felt conspicuous, in such an esteemed establishment, taking the few photos I did.

Le Gavroche is the opposite of contemporary in decor, but without being staid. You feel comfortable in your surroundings, as if you're sitting in a favourite wealthy uncle's library. There is no background music - Le Gavroche gets booked up months in advance and so can rely on there being a soundtrack of chatter and clinking to distract you from the sound of your companions eating.

We were offered a glass of champagne each on the house (perhaps because it was so close to Valentine's Day?) and soon after our canapes arrived. An egg salad 'tart' adorned with three coral beads of caviar and a finger of chorizo wrapped in pastry. This was my first taste of caviar and I must say I liked it although even such a small amount was so fishy I can't imagine eating it by the scoopful. It made me feel like I was eating sushi. The chorizo pastry was gorgeously salty and meaty. Wouldn't have complained if there had been one or two more of those.

Next up was our amuse bouche - smoked eel with the lightest, subtlest horseradish cream I have ever tasted (because I dine on this kind of stuff all the time don'tchaknow). And the eel was another first for me but this was fine dining and of course it bore no real resemblance to it's natural form. It was just a perfectly shaped piece of fish and quite a delicately flavoured one at that.

At about this time our order was taken. We had decided to treat ourselves for Valentine's Day by coming to Le Gavroche but that doesn't mean we were suddenly flush with cash - we had decided to choose lunch here for a reason. They do a set lunch for only 52.60 which includes three courses and half a bottle of wine. (Bear in mind that a main from the a la carte started at around 30 pounds and you see what an excellent deal this is.)

There was a choice of three for each course. For some reason the set menu was all in French, whereas the a la carte menu gave you the translations. This wasn't really a problem as my French is pretty up to scratch (at least when it comes to food) but there was one item I couldn't puzzle out even with the context. Our waiter was more than happy to help and I ended up ordering this for my starter - the veloute de topinambour, or Jerusalem artichoke. This came with iberico jamon and more artichoke in the bowl and then the velvety veloute is poured over them.

What a deeply rich, buttery and savoury taste this was. If I hadn't know it was artichoke I probably wouldn't have been able to place it, it just tasted delicious and 'rooty'. The mouthfuls where I had some of the ham with it were fabulous - the touch of saltiness it added working perfectly. I think this was actually my favourite dish of the meal!

Stephen chose the pan fried seabass with chive butter and said it was a very fine dish, though he commented that once again, in a high-end establishment, the skin wasn't crispy! We surmised it had been fried only on the one side as you could see the bottom was cooked through and it grew more translucent towards the top.

By this point I had availed myself twice of the bread basket yet still didn't turn down the chance to complete the hat trick - there were three varieties of home baked bread on offer, and therefore three I had. With a choice of salted or unsalted butter that was replenished as soon as a dent was made in it, each kind was moreish; a rustic campagne, a French bread and a light, chewy rye.

I made an unusual choice for dessert for me - I went for the ice cream and sorbets option. They wheel over their cart of ice creams and scoop the flavours you want at the table. Taking the advice from our neighbours who were very friendly and obviously seasoned fine diners, I had a scoop of each - wild berry, pear, blood orange (my favourite), milk chocolate, vanilla and one other I can't remember!

Stephen had the cheese platter, instigating another trolley being wheeled over from which you can make your selection. I was too timid to take a picture while it was at our table, but I took one from afar. Cheese trolley? Cheese 16-wheeler more like!

Cheese was served with yet more butter, and some wholemeal 'melba toast' studded with fruit and nuts. Quince, a chutney and celery were served as relishes. I can't remember exactly which cheeses he chose, but all were, predictably, lovely. (I'm almost never going to say anything different about cheese.)

To finish we had the customary petits fours - a sweet marshmallow, a brandy snap, a candied kumquat and a miniature perfect pistachio brownie. Our kindly neighbours tried to encourage us to order a second serving of these, as we seemed to like them so much, and although I was tempted, if only for that brownie, we had eaten quite enough by then!

Service was polished and attentive, mostly with a smile and a willingness to answer any questions, though for some reason the man devoted to keeping our glasses refreshed was rather stern.

Eating at Le Gavroche is obviously not something I can make a habit of, but it was perfect for a celebratory occasion. I loved Pollen Street Social for its laid-back, accessible feel, but when you really want to spoil yourself, you want a place that feels grand and special. Le Gavroche is definitely that.

Le Gavroche opened as far back as 1967, moving to its current Mayfair location in 1981. It featured in the inaugural UK Michelin guide in 1974, gaining a second star in 1977, and a third in 1982, which under Albert Roux it retained until 1993. At this point Albert’s son Michel Roux Jr took over the kitchens, and it transitioned to the two Michelin stars that it has retained ever since. Its basement dining room has the feel of an old fashioned club, though this may change in January 2014 when the restaurant closes for a refurbishment. There is a bar area on the ground floor, where you can read the menu and enjoy a drink. Le Gavroche is noted for its unashamedly classical French cooking.

A tasting menu was priced at £120, with a la carte dishes varying significantly in price. However with starters from £19.80 to £60.80 for lobster mousse, main courses in the range £28 - £60, and desserts from £14.80 - £26.90, a three course meal will still be a pricey affair. The vast, mostly French wine list includes wines such as Leon Beyer Pinot Gris 2008 at £44 for a wine that you can find in the high street for around £13, Berchet de Vaudieu Blanc Chateauneuf du Pape 2011 at £83 for a wine that retails at £31, and Chave Hermitage Blanc Blanche 2005 at £121 for a wine that will set you back about £36 in a shop. Relative mark-ups are kinder higher up the list, such as Lafon Perrieres 2005 at £435 for a wine that retails at £360.

As an amuse-bouche, a little piece of deep fried crab with mango salad was rather ordinary, though pleasant enough – it seemed a rather unambitious offering for a two star restaurant. It had a bread-crumbed coating but was rather curiously described as tempura (15/20). We were on firmer ground with the next dish. Soufflé suissesse is a signature dish of Le Gavroche, an old fashioned, rich and delicious cheese soufflé cooked on double cream that has been simmered and reduced. The texture was very light indeed, the cheese (Gruyere) flavour wonderful, the cream rich and smooth (18/20).
Snow crab gratin (£24.20) with parsley and espelette pepper in a Hollandaise sauce had good quality crab, the cheese topping enjoyable and the pepper well controlled, but it was quite salty, even to my taste. This also seemed a rather unambitious dish for a kitchen of this calibre (barely 16/20).

Roast suckling pig (£34.10) came with crackling, pepper sauce with golden raisins and confit shallots. The crackling was excellent, with firm texture but not rock hard as some crackling can be, the pork of good quality, the pepper sauce adding some useful balance to the meat, which would have been too dry without it (17/20).

Turbot (£48.60) was served with heritage carrots, radish and chive butter sauce; this generous piece of turbot had lovely flavour and was superbly cooked, the simple chive and butter sauce letting the fish be the star of the dish without too much flavour distraction (18/20).

Caramelised apple (£19.60) with calvados cream was served with Breton shortbread biscuit. This was a pretty and enjoyable dessert, the apple and calvados a classic combination (18/20). Passion fruit soufflé (£26.90) came with white chocolate ice cream. Desserts are a highlight at Le Gavroche, and this soufflé was hard to fault, the texture light, even cooked through with plenty of fruit flavour (19/20).

Service here is always extremely precise, with waiters paying careful attention to every detail of the meal. The bill, with plenty of good wine, came to £180 a head at dinner. Hardly a bargain, but the top dishes here are very good indeed. Ingredients are of high quality and the cooking technique is hard to fault. The set lunch here is a relative bargain but you should not expect the same level of dishes: clearly a whole meal with wine for the price of a main course in the evening is going to involve compromise. I have always found the dessert course at Le Gavroche to be the highlight, really top class. Some of the other details, such as the nibbles, can be less impressive, and the odd dish may be merely pleasant rather than striking. However the best of the cooking here is very fine indeed.

Disclaimer - this review is entirely biased as 1. I LOVE Michel Roux, and I got to meet him 2. Birthday dinner 3. Tasting menu with wine drunkenness. Le Gavroche was made for special occasions, it's warm, and gleaming, with gorgeous flowers and linen, and welcoming service, and the nicest chef who walked the planet. The attention to detail is meticulous, the standards (and the calorie contents) are stratospheric, yet, the experience is overwhelmingly friendly and warm. And unforgettable. I don't need to gush over the food, if ANYTHING, the tasting menu and it's accompanying slew of wines was a bit too much for me...and I ate barely a piece of the most delicious birthday cake that they brought out :(( IF I had the chance to go back, I'd get the cheese souffle, the veal, a bottle of red, all of that incredible cheese tray, and a lighter dessert. But as I said, a special occasion, a special menu, a special experience. Magnifique!

Le gavroche is just wonderful: it doesn't change yet it never is stale. The staff are delightful and welcoming and the atmosphere is calm but not sterile. Special requests are catered for with aplomb. The cheese board is a highlight.

Excellent food although expectations were high and had not been met for all courses, except two of them. Interesting cheese platter and an amazing wine pairing (expensive but good!). Too formal as jacket is needed sitting at the table.

An attractive room "cozy" in the basement. Do not forget a jacket required for men (if they will lend you.).
We dined at the map to around € 150 per head.
The food is excellent, including desserts.
The wines are too expensive.
The service is impeccable.
We spent a very pleasant evening.

I’ve been to a lot of Michelin star restaurants and this one is definitely my most memorable and best experiences. The staff are so polite and attentive. The food it self is just amazing. The ambience is just perfect.. I find with some Michelin restaurants to be abit pretentious- this place was warm and pleasant Without taking away from the food experience. Michel Roux himself came to our table and introduced himself! And when the night was done we were about to purchase the le gavaroche cookbook and we were pleasantly comped! 100% would recommend

This was my second time at Le Gavroche and it was just as special as the first. The service is impeccable, staff are friendly, thoughtful and knowledgeable about the food and drink. Nothing is too much for them. The food is outstanding, flavour bomb after flavour bomb. The portions aren't super huge but every bite is packed with flavour. Plus there are small bites in addition to the main meals, as well as delicious, freshly baked bread. It's quite a cosy atmosphere with dimmed lighting and sufficient space between the tables so that it doesn't feel over-crowded. A couple of differences from the first visit which didn't take away from the overall experience, but we're noticeable were; having the price on all of the menus (last time only the 'host' could see the prices), also, there was an amazing non-alcoholic cocktail called Eponine which they no longer do. They didn't seem to have any set non alcoholic cocktails BUT the sommelier was happy to mix a cocktail based to any key ingredients and also made some lovely recommendations. In addition, a lovely sweet treat was brought out as a surprise for my husband's birthday. Once again an amazing experience from start to finish. Thank you.

The cheese soufflé is heavenly! Would go back again and again just for this dish. Other dishes are also good, the lamb and beef cheek are cooked to perfection. Chocolate cake with Matoro wine paring is sinfully additive. I’m a fan, and like all the fan girls. I got the cookbook, signature and photo with Chef Michel.
