The White Onion has that perfect mix of high quality food, while in a relaxed and informal setting. My friend and I visited recently for dinner and were so pleased we did. It is designed with class and refinement in mind and felt just great.

We spoke to the excellent waiter about our first dining experience there, and he was more than happy to help us through the options on the menu. To start, we chose the oven baked Brixham scallops with celeriac and truffle purée, lardo, Herefordshire apple jelly and the roasted Norfolk quail with sesame fig relish, crispy tapioca. Each was cooked to perfection and we both loved every mouthful.

On to the main course, and the Scottish venison saddle with glazed beetroots and herbs, apple purée, girolles, venison sauce as well as the rump of English veal with carrot and apricot purée, hay baked heritage carrots, tamarind jus both sounded too good to miss. We both love our meat and it was a pleasure to see such options on the menu. The venison in particular was cooked with skill, care and attention. This was matched by the continuing quality attention shown by the waiting staff.

There was still room for dessert, and after much deliberation we went for the quince tarte tatin and the pistachio ice cream, as a pair of sweet toothed people! They were the ideal way to finish of a great meal and we have both vowed to come back and try something different next time. It all sounded so good!

Onions, when you chop them, make you cry. This is, apparently, down to the chemical irritant known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide. It stimulates the eyes’ tear glands. The internet is full of good advice on how to avoid this:  – Cut onion  under running water. Yeah right, you won’t cry from the onion fumes but you will from the cut to your finger after the knife pings off the slippery onion! – Use a very sharp knife so you cut rather than crush, thereby releasing less of the bitey chemical. Ditto, as above.  – stand by a draught to blow the fumes away. Ergo, onion tears avoided in favour of wind burn tears! For goodness sake, you’re going to cry anyway, so (wo)man up and just get on with it!

The White Onion is a love at first sight. Authentic french dishes which are all very tasty and nice looking. Small but cozy place, staff are all very friendly. Even the bread before ordering are impressively good! Highly recommended.

Delicious French food with good service. We loved the interior design too. Friendly atmosphere. It was really busy on Saturday lunchtime. Their bread is delicious. The lunchtime menu offered great price per quality ratio. We were pleasantly surprised. Bare in mind the portions are small. The ravioli with mushrooms was incredible. It is quite difficult to park around there though. Highly recommend to try this restaurant. Maybe a bit more vegan options please.

New menu and some fabulous new plates! As ever, the fish is stunning. Scallops with champagne foam as a starter and sea bass for main were spot on. Perfectly cooked and stunning flavours. Service fabulous, no change there!

The service and food was amazing. We had a predinner cocktail which was delicious and beautifully presented. The waiters really took care of us, topping up both our water and our wine whenever needed. The speciality bread was fabulous. The portions were just right and every course was pretty as a picture before tasting divine. It was my husband's birthday and they put a birthday wish on the personalised menu and gave him a small lemony dessert with the words Happy Birthday written on the plate in chocolate. He was suitably chuffed. The little touches really topped it off.

Superb in every respect. I loved the light and tasty beetroot and goat’s cheese starter and the black cod main dish was done perfectly. Good wine list. All at a very reasonable price for this quality of food. Excellent service even on a busy Sunday lunchtime.

We were not sure what to expect after checking the reviews of the restaurant in Wimbledon village on Google map. The White Onion reviews look great compared to many on the Wimbledon village, so we went in for our 40th birthday dinner. It was almost great, the wine flavour and aroma (Chablis) does not match the price we paid for compared to the foods we had. We went for Quail on the special card and Rabbit & Guinea Fowl terrine, for our starters, both were very good. My Duck breast with prune sauce was too sweet, lacking the balance of other flavours, which could mellow down the sharp edges of the sweet prune. Beef fillet was great in both the look and flavour. Our sides were potatoes and caramelised carrots, all good. But sweet carrot did not go well with Sweet Duck either. We were full by the half way of our main courses. Initially, we thought we could have the cheese board to finish off the meal but we decided to share an orange chocolate tartlet with whisky ice cream instead, and it was good. Our waiter Emmanuel was great too. Very polite and always smile. Over all, the evening was pleasant. Fresh flower would be a nicer touch. Nevertheless, thank you very much for a lovely birthday dinner. All the best for many years ahead.

Exceptional dining experience. The Duck egg starter was stand out and the coffee for a restaurant was on point. Contender for best lunch / dinner spot in the village...

Forget the usual rinse and repeat chains, this is the best restaurant on the High Street in Wimbldon by far! Been eating here on and off for around 3yrs now and it just gets better!

Delicious authentic French food served by friendly welcoming and considerate hosts. The three course menu is £25 and really offers a great choice at great value. The ox cheek dish is sublime. Will return again, Highly recommended.

Second visit to this restaurant. Was pleasantly surprised by substantial improvement in the overall experience. Food was very good and service was attentive and solid. As an example, no effort was spared to meet my requirement for sugar-free and gluten-free food (a medical requirement). The sea trout was delicious and so was the cod. Really recommend this restaurant. Probably one of the bests in Wimbledon.
