Our meal was superb.
We started by sharing some bar snacks of chorizo croquettas with green alioli and artichokes with pickles. Croquettas were smaller than usual, about the size of a man's thumb and fried a deeper brown than normal. Very tasty alioli colored with parsley. Not a pronounced taste of chorizo, though. Light and airy and not too oily. We were impressed by the homemade pickles. Artichokes dressed in olive oil were on a bed of pickled shaved carrot and a tangle of red and white onion. Each of the vegetables had been brined in its own pickling liquor. The carrots tasted of nutmeg and were slightly sweeter than the onions. The white onion had been flavored with cardamon. There was a hint of clove in the red onion.
My main was the rump steak cooked rare from the Butcher's Cut section of the menu. The best steak in recent memory. It had a smokiness that made me wonder if it had been cooked over charcoal. I was assured they use a normal grill that can attain extremely high temperatures. Better than any steak you can make in a domestic kitchen. It came with good chunky chips, a few sauteed green beans, some undressed rocket and watercress as well as a delicious anchovy butter.
I didn't taste all of my companion's hake fillet dish but it looked great. Crispy skin, a lemon and butter emulsion with fresh mint, samphire and pan fried cucumber.
For dessert I had the dark chocolate fondant with a scoop of rum and raisin ice cream. Perfectly executed with a gooey centre. A crumble of nuts and broken pralines sprinkled over the top added a crunchy texture. My companion had creme brulee with fresh berries. Rich custard and some raspberries were scattered over the pudding but under the caramel topping. The brulee had been caramelized to a quite aggressive shade of brown. I do prefer the complexity of a dark caramel that starts to take on a slightly bitter edge.
We drank a bottle of rose grenache that was excellent and fruity. I also ordered a glass of the cheapest red to go with my steak. We attended the discounted soft launch, but at full price, our meal with service would have been £97 and worth every penny. Don't miss the attractive WC with the distressed cork tiles in keeping with the wine theme.
Cosy and pleasant place. Love their Mondays. I can have great wine for less :D Recently staff changed and I think service is much better. Tomi our waitress was fun and full of joy. It was nice to see her happy engaging in the conversation with us.
The new Italian manager is also nice.
We enjoyed the selection of cheeses and meats. Wine recommendation was great too.
I put one star less for atmosphere as the music choice for chilled Monday afternoon was a bit too much, I didn’t enjoy the mix of random pop, commercial songs. It was hard to relax or even to talk :p
I love this Humble grape. The food options were absolutely delicious and of course the wine was fantastic. Great recommendations and service from the waiters.
Ended up spending hours here as it was a buzzing vibe and the wine and food especially were delicious. Our host and the remaining staff were very knowledgeable, charming and attentive. A balanced and accommodating new menu; the financier dessert and short rib croquettes were a highlight for me. The sous chef was very cute as well. This place is definitely a spot to bring and impress your mates with!
Popped in for a cheeky wine (excellent South African recommendation from the chap who served me).
Ended up having 2 glasses and some excellent food (Chilli Fried Chicken).
Service was fantastic as well.
Will definitely be back!!!
Had a wonderful experience arranging and attending a wine tasting for a friend's hen do at the Humble Grape Islington branch. Everything was perfect, from the initial organising to the event itself. Communication was very quick and clear, even making adjustments for the needs of the group. The wine tasting was very interesting thanks to Alessandro's in depth knowledge, along with a great selection of wines! The food was delicious as well. Overall, could not have asked for a better experience - highly highly recommend!
The wine recommendation was very well suited to us as a pair. We notified the sommelier of our preferences and they provided us with four very nice options within our price range. The service was very good and the waiters/waitresses were very attentive. We will definitely be back!
A delightful wine bar tucked away just off the high street in Angel. The food was beyond delicious and even tho we had small plates they were incredibly filling. The wine list is almost endless so having a well educated waitress help us was really appreciated! Thanks so much for your welcoming and friendly prenasce Keisha 🙂 and we will be back!
Hip, buzzing and friendly local wine bar. Perfect for the ‘in’ Islington set - and those lucky enough to hang with them. Perfect for a quick drink or two, a meal or a work event. Food menu great for sharing, beautifully presented, wine selection very diverse and interesting. Above all fabulous, friendly and knowledgable staff who genuinely want their customers to have a good time and return. None more so than the fabulous @Jordan. Highly recommended.
Absolutely without a doubt our favourite place to eat and drink. We try and come here once a week at least if possible. The staff are so knowledgeable about the wines without an ounce of pretentiousness. They are always so welcoming and friendly, with great wine and delicious food. A real credit needs to be given to the team as well as the company culture on a wider level. Also it’s dog friendly!
Whenever I walk pass by I’d sit down for one or two drinks. Good selection for wine by glass, was even surprised by the performance of the Serbian wine. Food just about ok. Very good service team. A place to catch up before dinner in a nearby restaurant.
