The barbecue cheese burger with smoked cheddar in between with caramelised onion and bacon is the only desire of my mouth shouting to me and here i get it all.

Free State Kitchen is the newcomer of the year to the Liverpool dining scene according to Liverpool Food & Drink awards.  Serving American classics it has gone down a treat in the city with many rave reviews. Our first visit however was a little disappointing, on arrival we were told that they had sold out of burgers which was my first choice so we settled on The Clam Sam and The Scooch.  The Clam Sam is billed as seasoned fried clams and seafood in a soft white roll with a kicking Tiger Sauce, crisp lettuce, tomato and fresh onion.  The Scooch featured Italian deli meats, Prima Donna cheese, hot sweet peppers, roasted red pepper, olive oil and balsamic on a griddled ciabbata roll.  However the Clam Sam was lacking clams with very few for the price charged and the Scooch was rather dry and lacking flavour which was surprising given the ingredients. Maybe we had caught them on a bad night after a busy afternoon we thought but first impressions were not good.  Since the first visit we sa

The menu is clear, concise and straight to the point. Starters include delights such as Buffalo Hot Wings and Sweetcorn Chowder. We went for the Sweetcorn Fritters – juicy corn niblets bound in a light, spicy batter and Maryland Crab Cakes – white crab meat, mixed peppers and onion with Maryland Old Bay Seasoning and citrus wedges.

There I was, enjoying the early evening sun in the oasis of calm that is the Free State Kitchen garden, and it made me wonder why there are so few al fresco dining options in Liverpool. There a couple of tables outside Ego on Hope Street, and there's a terrace attached to the disastrous collection of what can only loosely be called restaurants in Liverpool One (Café Rouge, Wagamama, Zizzi's and so on and so forth until you just want to kill everyone in the world), but for a city that boasts so many green spaces, not to mention a multitude of handsome old buildings with gardens in that area between the cathedrals, outside seating is a rarity. And the weather isn't that much worse than London, surely? Anyway, the scarcity of open-air eating in the city only makes you appreciate that much more anywhere where it is an option, and even if Free State Kitchen had just put some deck chairs in a carpark it would have been a pleasant novelty. But the striking space behind this unassuming Georgia

Have been here just for drinks before but had food for the first time last night, I had the burger on special with a gluten free bun (Quite a lot of the menu is suitable for gluten intolerance or adaptable) The burger was really tasty and juicy and the bun was really good quality and texture, not too stodgy. The staff are lovely here too, really friendly and genuine. Will definitely be back for food again!

The way I discovered this place was quite unusual, I was in the Arts bar in Hope St next and they had a small outside area you can sit in. When I looked over the balcony I saw people drinking in this lovely garden opposite. So I went looking for it. Found the entrance in Maryland St. You would never know it was there from the outside. I believe it used to be a convent previously. Anyway it's a great place to have a pint and get a suntan at the same time in the summer. They even have a handy bar in the garden. Well worth a visit as there's not a lot of bars in Liverpool with a large garden like this place.

Called in here on the off chance with the other half a couple of weeks ago and from the minute we entered we were made to feel welcome. I personally felt like we were family and not just another customer. This is definitely my new favourite place 😍 The food was amazing and the Coca-Cola is served in glass bottles 😁 Please never change the way you treat your customers. You and your team have it spot on! Absolutely phenomenal x

Updating my review as it's been a while. Free State Kitchen is still hands down my favourite place for a burger in Liverpool. I've been coming here since it opened. It was amazing then and it's only got better with time. It's got a great menu from the starters right through to the puddings. The chicken wings with blue cheese sauce (optional celery) are divine and I can, and have, happily eat a whole large bowl to myself. All of the burgers are fantastic and that's before you see what great special of the week is. They don't overload their burgers with too many toppings like some places do and they're all the better for it. The fries are done to perfection as well, soft with a little crunch and some rosemary over them Its a great place to eat and even better when it's warm and you can enjoy their garden. Decent range of drinks too. Can't recommend it enough.

Had the classic burger, and it was good. Feel like the burger could do with a bit more seasoning. It came with rosemary chips, which were nice. Paid £12 for the burger, which I feel maybe it's slightly expensive as it wasn't too filling, but I left comfortable. Staff were nice and welcoming though.

Came here as part of a stag doo and have to say the service was excellent! Food was served quickly and tasted unreal👌🏻 drinks were also served timely while we sat in the beer garden at the back. Would definitely recommend for larger parties 🎉

Absolutely awesome place, food was delicious, staff were fantastic, and so helpful. Plenty of gluten free options and the staff took the time to tell me what was available. Delicious chocolate brownie and ice cream! Can't rate this place highly enough.
