We thought you might like to know that The Hawkley Inn was awarded 5 stars by gastrohub. Here is the review from the site.
Another Friday, another beautiful day. It was my turn to choose our destination today, and when the sun is out, I am always drawn to the country. We are also working our way through a list of pubs which need to be revisited, and top of that list was The Hawkley Inn in Liss.
We have visited this pub before, and it is no secret that it has a good reputation for both food and drink. So let's be honest with each other. We love this pub. Luckily it is signposted from some way out, otherwise it could prove tricky to find without the aid of sat-nav. Whenever I see this pub, it always puts me in mind of a saloon from a Western, with its lean to and rustic wooden charms. I'm always a little disappointed that it doesn't have a swinging door, ready for trouble makers to be tossed out headfirst. I digress slightly.
Just like you imagine a saloon of old, this pub feels friendly and full of life. It is bright and airy inside, embracing the sunshine outside. There is a garden out back, but we opted for the cowboy veranda out the front. That's the end of the Western references. We sat on our wooden benches and sipped on our iced coke as we perused the menus. The specials board was gametastic, including pigeon, rabbit and venison. The main menu had plenty of options if game isn't your thing. It's one of those menus that has something for everyone. It is our duty to point out that it is on the pricy side for pub food, but as we are increasingly finding with the heightened quality of gastro pubs, sometimes it's worth it. We'll do all the hard work for you. If we pay top end and it's not worth it, we'll be sure to let you know.
I was seduced by the chicken supreme with stilton sauce, sautéed new potatoes and vegetables. Dad found himself drawn to the pork belly. Let's start off by saying it certainly is worth the extra outlay. All the ingredients are of noticeably high quality. Everything is made in house and the execution is without fault. It's also important to point out that the portion sizes are good. For some inexplicable reason, many eateries think that when you charge more, you provide less. As far as we're concerned, if you get a tiny portion of high quality ingredients, it should cost the same as a big old portion of fish and chips. That's enough of that. Safe to say, that when we put our cutlery down, we were well and truly satisfied.
I think you've already noticed that we are very keen on this pub. It oozes charm, it's everything we want in a country pub, and let's not forget, the food is wonderful. It might be a little bit out the way, unless you happen to live in Hawkley, but once you've been there, you will be a fan forever.
Lets keep it simple, great food reasonably priced, great pub and really friendly people, I highly recommend it....
Very friendly staff. Made you feel very welcome. Rooms excellent standard. Food of a very high standard and we'll werethy of the 4 star AA rating 2017. For me to write a comment means it must be very good as I don't normally do things like this. I very much recommend the Hawkley Inn to any one who is looking for a place to get away from it all for a few days.
A lovely traditional pub and B n B in a pretty little village. Cosy room, comfy bed, friendly staff and locals. The meal we had was lovely and well presented. And a Travel Zoo bargain. What more could you ask for?

My husband and I thought we'd try here as I'd never been before. Sat in the garden which was lovely. Friendly staff and a good home cooked choice on the menu. My husband had the beef salad with new potatoes and I had the Chickpea Fritters with Feta on a bed of salad. Absolutely gorgeous food, which was very well presented. Will definitely be coming back
Very nice friendly place with excellent choice of food on the menu.
We enjoyed a really lovely evening out with family here tonight - all 5 starters and mains were delicious with lovely attention to detail on all plates, attentive staff and it was definitely worth the drive.
One of the best pubs in Hampshire both for food and drinks topped with brilliant service and also dog friendly
7 of us had a wonderful lunch on a Saturday. All the food surpassed expectation and the staff were brilliant hosts.
What a lovely place to eat and drink!
Yesterday was the first time I have been here. We met some friends following a walk (they walked we didn't) and had a most enjoyable meal. Good hearty food and a particularly impressive choice of real ales which i understand are changed regularly.
If only the pub was on our doorstep?
We shall definitely go again!
My Goodness! I Had Been Looking Forward To Having A Steak All Day But Never Did I Expect Anything Like This!! The BEST Steak I Have Ever Had!! Cooked To Perfection And The Taste Was Unreal!! All The Staff Were Lovely & Friendly, Proper Pub Grub! Definitely Coming Back & Recommending!
Pubs wax and wane over the years. This one has kept a good standard for a long time. Eight of us had a meal last night…Excellent! Great service too from all staff. Love the older chap with a great, dry sense of humour.
Situated in stunning historic countryside. Wonderful staff, fabulous food! Rooms are spacious, so comfortable and the bathtub was amazingly huge. A truly relaxing Inn. Highly recommend. Thank you to all the staff. A real gem in the South Downs National Park. ❤️
In the middle of absolutely no where, lovely scenery with some lovely walks. The building is absolutely beautiful and the garden is lovely.

Service was stellar, thanks Grace!
Had a delicious Sunday lunch at the Hawkley Inn. Food was fantastic, with generous portion sizes and the selection of ales and lagers was a breath of fresh air. Staff were very friendly. Would happily go again 👍
Called in for a quick drink but ended up staying for a roast, so glad we did excellent service, friendliest staff and the best roasted we’ve had out. Good value for money definitely worth a visit.
A lunchtime visit with friends, on a gloriously sunny afternoon.
A magnificent rack of ribs in a very tasty sauce, followed by an unctious strawberry and raspberry mess.
As is not unknown for us, we were last to leave, and enjoyed a leisurely conversation with the three generations of the owner's family and their cat!
Fully recommend and looking forward to a return meal before long.
Great village pub and a Free House too. The food and drink are wonderful. Very much worth the beautiful drive out. The narrow lanes are not for the faint-hearted who do not wish to dirty their tyres or do not remain aware for passing places. Been here before. Will be back again
Only visited for a meal, not a stay, so can't comment on the rooms.
The food however is excellent. Beware the large portions if you are planning on having a dessert.
The staff are very friendly. Highly recommended.
Great food, atmosphere, dog friendly pub. Garden at the back but we didn’t go there so cannot comment. Large variety in menu, something for everyone. Definitely worth a visit.
Beautiful setting for a lovely, traditional British pub. Beer was great, the food was even better. Sea bass was delicious.
