Reviews The Black Horse Inn

We chanced upon this gem of a pub last year when I was looking for a pub in Lewes that was showing the West Ham match .... happily it was and 9 months later we decided to move to Lewes and a 3 minute walk from The Black Horse! It has an everchanging selection of fantastically kept Real Ales including the delicious Burning Sky Plateau, which happens to be my favourite beer. The pub also serves superior pub food and has 2 open fires and welcoming staff. 10 out of 10

We had the most delicious roast, beef chicken and a pork! With each fully paying adult You get a child's meal free. One of the best roasts I've had in a long while. I'd highly recommend it.

There were 7 of us and we booked a table for 1pm on Sunday. Every beer I tried was lovely (as always) and we all ordered a roast. It all came in good time and my pork was one of the best I've ever had. The only complaint was too many potatoes. Although I ate all of mine!

I've just been there and I loved it so much! It feels like is a comunity lounge and the music was so nice! There were kids and even one dog around. The food was excellent! The French onion soup was seasoned properly and the roast (pork belly) was probably the best that I had so for. I will definetly go back !

First time visiting here today, we all had a lovely roast diner! My daughter and I had the vegan option, and it was amazing! Thoroughly enjoyed our food and will be back again

One of my favourite pubs in Lewes. A proper freehouse and a really great community feeling. Absolutely excellent ales and an open fire, and dog friendly too. The kind of pub where you can instantly feel welcome, even if you are just passing through. Good for quiz nights, and yes, a big screen for footie as well. Open fire in the winter.

I was just here for one night as I had an early meeting to be at. Wanted a drink locally and something to eat. Lady at the bar was friendly. Food was great and cooked well, plus more chips than I could manage. The chef asked me how my food was which is always nice. I can recommend this local pub. Can't stress enough how important it is to support our local pubs in the UK. Use it or loose it people!! X

Great roast dinners, friendly staff and lovely interior. Shame about the terrible soft rock on Sundays!

Sunday dinner was amazing, only thing we went for so can't really comment on anything else but atmosphere and decor was lovely, had a great seat in the window which was lovely and the footy was on and they allowed dogs 😁

Great pub serving a good choice of real ales. Two screens in front bar area showing sport, so a plus or minus depending on your viewpoint. Note they were both on mute which meant conversation wasn't a problem. Ample seating and a back bar area that I didn't venture to.

Loved it! My friend and I were the first in for an early lunch, we both had amazing fish & chips. I loved the blues/jazz music being played. Staff were friendly and service was quick. All in a lovely, proper pub!

A fabulous, cosy pub with outdoor space if it's sunny. Great food including Sunday Roasts for meat eaters, plus veggies/vegans, loads of great beers, wines & spirits! Also tea, coffee & hot chocolate. A huge TV & a warm welcome from the cheerful staff!

My friends and I came across this pub today after a lovely 10 mile walk around the surrounding countryside. The owner was lovely , really friendly, directed us to a fab sunny , sheltered garden where we had some drinks and great food. All very reasonably priced , nice and fresh , service great , we will definitely return again and would highly recommend

This review is both personal and professional. I've known Declan who runs this Pub for many years. We met when he used to run the Elephant and Castle. He is delightful. I had a poor eatery experience at the Black Horse in the past but on this occasion a friend of mine had a completely different experience. I ordered a chicken caesar salad with a hard boiled egg. Accommodated by the Chef. My friend had the ribs, coleslaw and on recommendation the curly fries. Sounds simple I know but delish. It loses a star poorly on the fact that they don't serve NZ Sauvignon Blanc. Otherwise service with a smile. Thank you.

Think it's one of the nicest pubs in Lewes town full stop. Dec's influence on the place is clearly what makes it so great. Clean, comfortable and a nice vibe. Had food there last night and genuinely one of the best pub meals I've had in an age, by a country mile. Ribs were out of this world, someone else had a steak and not only was the meat cut lovely it was just perfectly cooked. Prices all very reasonable too. I suspect it gets often overlooked/passed by as it's right at the top of town, but those that avoid the walk really are missing a trick!
