It’s easily one of the best chippy in town. There’s a long queue when I came in but they served us pretty quickly.
I bought haddock (haddock is in the special board) with regular chips, potato scollops, pea croquettes, mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce.
I understand that fish and chips with mushy peas is the sacred combination for Brits. But after tasting them all, I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart, it needs to be said: fish and chips with homemade tartar sauce is an absolute combo. The rich tangy, a bit sweet and sourness in tartar complement the fish without needing any additional salt. I will recommend to get the tartar sauce (and it’s only 60p for a pot).
The potato scollops is quite good, although Idk why they wrote ‘scollop’ instead of ‘scallops’. The pea croquettes is basically fried mushy peas. Both are really good dipped in the tartar sauce.
This review might sound like an obsession to tartar sauce, but it’s really that good compared to the blander mushy peas and gravy (I’m so sorry).
Best fish and chips in the north of England. Hodgsons Chippy never fails to satisfy my cravings and we order from here most Fridays.
Always service with a smile from the owner and the place is spotlessly clean. A must visit for anyone in the area.
Superb batter. Lightly battered haddock/cod is our favourite. Make sure you asked for it as you go in and don’t until you actually order.
The girls behind the till are efficient and accurate. We’ve been going there for tens years and have never had missing or wrong items. Who can say that about Just Eat or Deliveroo?
