Proper boozer, only decent 1 left in Penshaw, landlord and staff, all local and cracking people, need more pubs like this instead of snotty nose, snobby restaurants where you can't enjoy yourself anymore. Always a hell of a place and atmosphere day or night, might even meet local legends like Nishy

A proper friendly old pub. Beer choice nothing special but a nice warm fire and friendly enough clientele. Ideal spot to stop off for a pint after a walk up Penshaw monument on a cold day.
A proper village pub with no airs and graces, roaring fires and cold beers. Not as busy as the pub next door but for me that is part of the charm.
Haven't been for a while, partly because it was always so empty, but was pleasantly surprised, quite a few people in, and it was a lovely friendly atmosphere, bar staff friendly and a lovely open fire,
