Great pub, great food, reasonably priced and a great selection of real ales. Very friendly, welcoming place. Black pudding and haggis medley starter was delicious, sautéed duck in Cointreau and orange. Cooked perfectly and very flavoursome. Lamb shank, the meat just fell of the bone and melted in your mouth. Will definitely be returning.
Great pub great food lovely people who run it all food home-made it's Top of the pops food is lovely don't forget to try the haggis and Black pudding for your starter it is very nice we went here for my sons 21st birthday meal and for a 65th birthday meal for my mother-in-law and it was Mother's Day as well we had a great day but for special occasions you're better off booking as it gets really full lovely little pub as well for just for a drink.
We had a delicious Saturday lunch and the owners were amazingly hospitable! Sheila is a wonderful chef. Don't hesitate to try all the specials. The portions are hearty and flavorful. Great fish and vegetable dishes as well as traditional meat choices. Unfortunately we had no room for pudding. Will have to return for dessert. Great place!
We are regular visitors to this cosy friendly Inn. You walk in to a warming open fire, spotlessly clean pub with a good atmosphere. The food is excellent & you have a great menu to choose from with some unusual dishes on offer, bar meals & al a carte is available in the restaurant. All food is home made with fresh local produce. The authentic Indian curry is divine the best you will get anywhere locally. The bar is well known for its selection of real ales too. Peter & Sheila keep a fine place and always give a warm welcome to all.
Merry Christmas to you all. Lovely place staff very friendly and wonderful food love the place xx

Couldn't recommend this place enough, not been in for 20+ years so wasn't sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised, food was amazing, cracking IPA and excellent service. Will be back soon to try something else of the special board.
Magnificent food and service!!!!! We need more pubs and restaurants like this in the world
We’d read some reviews and we are staying nearby.
An amazing meal. My boy has just ordered a sausage for his pudding as he enjoyed it so much in his main.
Home made curry for me. Chicken and chorizo for D and sausage and Yorkshire’s for K. Pudding arrived and looks fab.
Love this place went for food last night was beautiful and the owners are really nice people
Couldn't fault anything. The food was amazing and the portions get a two thumbs up aswel
Always consistent!
Fabulous Sunday lunch perfectly cooked, including lovely vegetables and gravey.
Friendly and helpful staff. Loved our meal, and French merlot.
First visit but won't be last. There is a good selection of food-something for everyone. I had the duck which was very well cooked and flavoursome as was the accompanying vegetables. Dessert was just as nice. The landlord, chef and staff were very friendly. I would certainly recommend this venue for good quality food and value for money.
Surprisingly good Sunday lunch. Good service, reasonably priced. Well cooked and plentiful vegetables, though I'm not sure about including mushy peas, nice meat and enough gravy to sink a ship!!! Best bit though...finding somewhere that does a very good Yorkshire pudding. Well done!
We found a gem in High Hesledon today! What a lovely place. Such friendly staff! Peter and Shelley blatantly enjoy what they do. Our food was absolutely delicious! The restaurant menu was interesting and exciting. Cooked to order and to perfection! Peter knows his ales and my recommended went a treat. Nothing was too much trouble and the service was excellent and with a smile! Having commended Shelley on her home-made mint sauce, I suggested she sell it separately to customers as it was so good! The friendly atmosphere made the entire experience a treat and we shall definitely return soon and highly recommend to all!
We were looking for a dog friendly pub. Came across the ship inn by chance. It has a doggy bar at the back of the pub. It's not a warm feel in there but a lovely idea so that your dog can still be part of the family. The pub itself is very oldy worldy. The food is home made and was really delicious. The portions are right depending on how greedy you are. If you like a big portion and to be stuffed full when you leave you may find them a bit small. The landlord is friendly and welcoming and does like a chat. The other staff were very polite and gave good service. Thumbs up!!
The food was unbelievable, everyone at our table loved everything. Even the grumpy owner couldn't make this less than a 5. I think this is the best pub food in the region and its always quiet for some reason. Definitely swing by before it closes!
We have been going to the ship in for over 7yeats years. I have had fabulous meals every time. Sheila and Peter are the perfect hosts x we went tonight 6.00 for the early bird left 9.15 our meals were amazing never tasted food like it and we have ate all over the world x
Fantastic authentic beef curry. Friendly welcome. Currently dogs not allowed so we sat outside but apparently installing a 'dog friendly bar' soon. Very clean. Accommodation units at rear.
It was lovely. A warm welcome from staff and the food was amazing!! Everything was freshly made and the portions were huge. Will definitely be returning for Sunday lunch.
Landlord is a very good host, food is freshly cooked, prices are reasonable, your typical country pub. Will definitely go back again whilst up north, loads of parking around the back
If you're a fan of fantastic cooked food then this is the place shena is the head chef and her cooking is to die for heavenly I had the pleasure of having the smoked haddock there are not enough words to describe how delicious this was all produce is sourced locally and fresh the fish fresh everything is just awesome
Absolutely beautiful. Food was amazing and the atmosphere was lovely. Only downfall there was no fruitshoots or drinks for toddlers. But would definitely recommend
I would recommend this pub as a must to try out for food and hospitality, combined with excellent bar and table service, good ales and a reasonably priced selection of wines. Catering for all foody tastes it's definitely a revisit for me and family in the near future.
The food was excellent. Large meal and very tasty. Brews their ow lager which was nice and reasonably priced. Will go back
Highly recommend it, beautiful tasty Sunday lunch and great real ale and a dog friendly room at the back of the pub, what more could you want
