This pub has had a huge and well overdue refurbishment since I last visited quite a few years ago.
Although the layout is very much the same, there is adequate space for pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters between tables too. Gone are the grimey tacky furniture and bar surfaces that were once the norm.
Customers can enjoy meals and drinks outdoors too, which is adequately lit up at night.
There is also a big screen for watching popular sporting events ideally situated in the lower level at the rear of the pub where you'll find a pool table and a further addition of tables and seating. This area leads out to the garden where blankets and throws are provided at the door for your warmth and comfort.
I didn't have anything to eat on this visit but did notice the extensive choice displayed on the menu boards.
Dog bowls and treats are also available too.
The clientele fully represents the residents, workers and senior citizens of the local area.
I look forward to visiting again soon!

The pub was almost empty.
The service was OK but the steak and Ale pie was pretty awful as clearly evident from the picture.
Good pub didn't eat in there just had drinks and watched football they have one pool table and a beer garden and white a few Teles
Absolutely amazing curry burger, the best burger i have ever tasted!
Good to see both Old Speckled Hen and Abbott on tap last Friday evening, which hadn't always been the case in past recent visits.
The Old Speckled Hen was in excellent condition.
Would also like to mention the barstaff that evening, Tasha and Sharon, who were hardworking, friendly and helpful. Well done 👍
Visited to meet family and friends for food and to play pool. Lovely staff, extra helpful and polite. Good atmosphere. Good food and great service. Took a dog with us and she was treated exceptionally well with treats and a water bowl. A little gem in Headington.

Very welcoming bar staff with very good quality great value pub food, and a selection of interest Green King ales. Music was playing but quiet enough to chat normally. I definitely recommend as a local pub with traditional ambiance as a venue in Headington.
Whilst staying in Headington for a few days , We came across The Royal Standard. A great pub with nice friendly staff and very good food . It was so good we came back again for another meal the following day . Cheers guys 👍🍺

Great pub with a great atmosphere, I come in most days after work to enjoy a few chilled out drinks with friends. Tasha and James are working most days and definitely have good customer service skills. Would 100% recommend :)
Best meat free burger in Oxford. Again please don't pay stupid money at a gourmet burger restaurant. The staff are amazing and I'm writing this review during Covid-19 when we are all still learning the new rules but this place has nailed it. Hand sanitizers everywhere and a real strict policy about using the toilets (again this is a Covid-19 review) the saff are so well trained they explain the new rules like a friend not like an angry traffic warden. Food Televisions. Pool table.Outside dining. What's not to love. Next door to Oxford's most famous monument The Headington Shark (named after Cecilia Shark Rhodes) who knitted the most famous tapestry in the world. Sorry I'm just waiting to run out of my 140 characters like Twitter. Truly a lovely pub.
Lovely pub with great staff and excellent food. It’s also dog friendly which is a plus and my pug loved the fire place and the staff as they were so friendly with her. We will definitely be back again soon.
Lovely high street pub.
Open fire & lit candles on a cold night makes the atmosphere more soothing.
