Such a nice, quiet inn with rooms. Beautifully clean and comfortable my only comment would be to mind your head and watch your step at times as it is an old building.
Food was super with a great use of locally sourced produce. Breakfast substantial with lots of choice plus good value.
Very convenient location, just on the edge of the main town area, so you can access shops and Hay castle very easily plus there is dedicated parking. Well worth a stop over.
Stayed one night at the Old Black Lion. Everything was lovely, I thought the service was particularly excellent especially from Rebecca. Very cozy room and hot shower with comfortable bed. Food was really excellent and the breakfast was very nice and I think excellent value. Lovely atmosphere staying in an old inn and the staff could not have been friendlier. I hope they continue to thrive.
We called in without a reservation for an evening meal. Although the restaurant was full the very nice manager said we could come back in an hour and a half. We tried to find an alternative venue but everywhere was closed or full. So we returned, and they welcomed us with open arms. The manager was careful to set expectation levels, he told us how long it would be before we could order/eat and he was spot on. The food was FABULOUS! My husband had the lamb and is still talking about it 2 weeks later. On the way out we found a hedgehog in the doorway and the manager helped us to relocate it nearby. Highly recommend :)
We made a last minute booking and we’re so glad that we did! We managed to get a table for 2 a few hours before due to a cancellation. A very kind lady informed us that we wouldn’t be able to order food until 8.15pm but we were welcome to come earlier for a drink, which we did. From start to finish the attentive staff managed our expectations and also accommodated some special requests from my wife. The gentleman behind the bar was very polite on arrival, throughout the meal and when we were leaving. In terms of food, we had the Ham Hock and Tomato Salad to start and the Mushroom Gnocchi and Lamb for main. The food in general was lovely. The lamb was cooked perfectly! Overall, a very enjoyable experience and I’d highly recommend.
We've stayed in the Old Black Lion several times, eaten there often, and enjoyed an occasional beverage at the bar. The building is old, and the rooms reflect that. Nevertheless, our stays have been comfortable, and the rooms well appointed. The restaurant, however, is great. Nice wine list, well-kept beer and a tasty menu that is proper restaurant quality but not too expensive. There are options for a lighter meal, if that is your want. It is the food that takes us back to the Old Black Lion. Even if you are not staying, it is worth a detour and booking a table.
Have just had supper at The Old Black Lion and what a treat. The ambience and welcome took the chill off a cold October evening, the food was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious, the service was friendly and efficient, just as it should be. My dairy and gluten free needs were not a problem and I can't wait to come back on our next visit to Hay.
Stayed in Hay on Wye for two days. Ate at the Old Black Lion each evening. Food was exceptional. But even better was the service. Becca and Ruby in front of house are some of the best I've come across in forty years. And the kitchen brigade are just exceptional.
Go there. It's a fabulous experience.
The staff couldn't have been more welcoming when we arrived for lunch on a sunny day with our dog. Food was delicious and a good selection of drinks available. The owners clearly care about the quality of the produce and the service they provide. Looking forward to a return visit.
This is our third visit and the ownership has changed now, what lovely people, the man even waved us off from the car park. The location is perfect, rooms equipped perfectly but retaining the original features and the restaurant exceptional. Will definitely be returning.
Fantastic service and food, very warm and friendly. Incredible breakfast. In almost all instances I would jump at a full English breakfast (which I'm sure is great, my partner had the veggie alternative which looked very nice.) I decided to go out on a limb and try the locally smoked kippers instead. Quite easily the best breakfast I've ever had.
James and the rest of staff and wonderfully accommodating, the rooms were very nicely decorated, very simple and a thoroughly enjoyable stay.
